Evergreen Bow Wreath Bedspread Crochet Pattern

This bedspread is made of deep forest-green lace squares. Each square carries a raised cream wreath with a cream bow on top. The squares are joined into one big grid, and a pointed picot border runs around the outside, so the finished bedspread looks like rows of holiday wreaths on dark evergreen lace.

There are only two colors: forest green for the lace bases, joins, and border, and warm cream for the wreaths and bows. The cream pieces are thick and puffy, made from popcorn berries and pointed leaves, so they stand out against the open green background.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished bedspread measures 67 x 85 in (170.2 x 215.9 cm), which covers the top of a full or queen bed with some drape over the sides.

Here is the construction. You crochet 63 green squares in the round, then make 63 cream wreaths and 63 bows and sew them on. Next you join the squares stitch-to-stitch into a grid 7 squares wide and 9 squares long. Last, you work a 3-round border.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 67 x 85 in (170.2 x 215.9 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Bulky (#5)
  • Hook: 6.0 mm (J-10)

Materials

Yarn: Use a soft bulky acrylic or acrylic-wool blend, about 130 m per 100 g. A plied yarn gives the clearest popcorns and leaves. Buy all of each color from one dye lot.

  • Forest green: 2,400 g (3,120 m) for the squares, joining, and border
  • Cream: 2,000 g (2,600 m) for the wreaths and bows

Both quantities include a margin of about 10% for gauge differences and swatching.

Tools:

  • 6.0 mm (J-10) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle with a large eye
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors and measuring tape
  • Blocking mats, rust-proof pins, spray bottle

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS – right side

Special stitches:

  • Popcorn (pc): Work 5 dc in the same st. Remove the hook from the loop, insert it from front to back into the first dc of the group, pick up the dropped loop, and pull it through. Ch 1 to close.
  • Leaf: Ch 6. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, hdc in the last ch, then sl st into the base st.
  • Leaf trio: Work 3 leaves into the same base st.
  • Picot: Ch 3, sl st in the 3rd ch from the hook.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 12 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), or 3 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm), with a 6.0 mm hook.

Make one full square and one wreath first. Block the square lightly and measure it. Check these sizes as you go:

  • After Round 1: 2 in (5.1 cm) across
  • After Round 3: 5 in (12.7 cm) across
  • After Round 4: 6.5 in (16.5 cm) across
  • After Round 6: 8.25 in (21.0 cm) square
  • After Round 7: 9 in (22.9 cm) square

If the square is 9.5 in (24.1 cm) or larger, go down one hook size. If it is 8.5 in (21.6 cm) or smaller, go up one hook size. Small errors add up: 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per square becomes 2.25 in (5.7 cm) over 9 squares.

Square (Make 63)

Work with forest green and the RS facing on every round. Do not turn.

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc) and work 15 dc in the ring. Join to the top of the ch-3 and pull the ring closed. (16 dc)

Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2). Dc in the next st, ch 2; repeat from * 14 more times. Join to the 3rd ch of the beginning ch-5. (16 dc, 16 ch-2 sps) These form the spokes in the center.

Round 3: Sl st into the next ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1. 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1; repeat from * 14 more times. Join. (48 dc, 16 ch-1 sps)

Round 4: Sl st in the next 2 dc and into the ch-1 sp. Ch 1, sc in the same sp. Ch 5, sc in the next ch-1 sp; repeat from * 14 more times. Ch 2, then dc in the first sc. The ch-2 and dc make the last loop and leave your hook in the middle of it. (16 sc, 16 ch-5 loops)

Round 5 (squaring round): Ch 3 (counts as dc). Work dc, ch 2, and 2 dc in the same loop for the first corner. 5 dc in each of the next 3 loops, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next loop; repeat from * 2 more times. Work 5 dc in each of the last 3 loops and join. (76 dc: 19 per side, plus 4 corner ch-2 sps)

The 16 loops are 4 corner loops and 12 side loops. Each side has 2 + 15 + 2 = 19 dc.

Round 6: Sl st in the next dc and into the corner sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. Dc in each of the next 19 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Dc in each of the last 19 dc and join. (92 dc: 23 per side)

Round 7: Sl st in the next dc and into the corner sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same sp. Sc in each of the next 23 dc, 3 sc in the corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Sc in each of the last 23 dc and join. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (104 sc)

Per-side count: The middle sc of each 3-sc group is the corner st. From corner st to corner st, each side has 1 + 1 + 23 + 1 + 1 = 27 sc, with both corner sts included. Check: 27 x 4 = 108, minus the 4 corner sts that were counted twice, = 104.

Wreath Appliqué (Make 63)

Use cream.

Foundation: Ch 36 and join with a sl st to make a ring. Make sure the chain is not twisted.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around and join. (36 sc) The ring measures about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across.

Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in the next st, pc in the next st, sc in the next st, then work a leaf trio into that same sc; repeat from * 11 more times. Join, fasten off, and leave a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail. (12 popcorns, 12 leaf trios = 36 leaves, 24 sc)

Each repeat uses 3 sts, and 36 ÷ 3 = 12 repeats. Spread out each leaf trio so it fans beside its popcorn. Each leaf is about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long, and the finished wreath is about 6.5 in (16.5 cm) across.

Bow Appliqué (Make 63)

Use cream and leave long tails for sewing.

Loop strip: Ch 26. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (24 hdc) The strip measures about 8 in (20.3 cm). Fold both ends in to the center so they overlap slightly. This makes two loops.

Tails (make 2): Ch 11. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (9 hdc) Each tail measures about 3 in (7.6 cm). Sl st down across the last st at an angle to make a pointed tip.

Center wrap: Ch 7. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (6 sc) It measures about 2 in (5.1 cm).

Assembly: Lay the tails in an inverted V behind the center of the folded loop strip. Wrap the center wrap tightly around all layers and sew it closed at the back. The finished bow is about 4 in (10.2 cm) wide.

Attaching the Appliqués

  1. Center the wreath on the square so its ring sits over Rounds 3–4. The green spokes should show through the middle.
  2. Turn the square so its edges run straight up, down, left, and right. Rotate the wreath until one popcorn is at the top center.
  3. Whipstitch the inner edge of the wreath ring to the square. Then tack down each popcorn. Leave the leaf tips loose so they stay raised.
  4. Sew the bow over the top popcorn. Tack down the tips of the loops and the tails.

Make All Pieces

  • Forest green: 63 squares
  • Cream: 63 wreaths and 63 bows (63 loop strips, 126 tails, 63 center wraps)

Every square is the same (W = wreath square):

ROW 1: W W W W W W W
ROW 2: W W W W W W W
ROW 3: W W W W W W W
ROW 4: W W W W W W W
ROW 5: W W W W W W W
ROW 6: W W W W W W W
ROW 7: W W W W W W W
ROW 8: W W W W W W W
ROW 9: W W W W W W W

Turn every bow to point the same way, toward the head of the bed.

Joining

Method: Flat slip-stitch seam in forest green, worked through the back loops only.

  1. Lay two squares side by side with the RS up and the edges touching.
  2. Start at the corner sts. Work one sl st through the back loops of each matching pair of sts.
  3. Join 27 sts to 27 sts, corner st to corner st. There are no extra chains at the seams.
  4. Join the squares into 9 strips of 7. Then join the strips together the same way, 7 x 27 = 189 sts to 189 sts.

Tension: Keep the sl sts as loose as the sc in Round 7. If a seam puckers, use a hook one size larger for the joins. At each 4-way crossing, sew straight through the corner sts so there is no gap.

Size checkpoint: The joined piece should measure 63 x 81 in (160.0 x 205.7 cm), give or take 1 in (2.5 cm).

Border

Use forest green with the RS facing. Border gauge: 3 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm), the same as Round 7.

Starting counts: Each short edge has 7 x 27 = 189 sts. Each long edge has 9 x 27 = 243 sts. At each seam, both squares’ corner sts are still separate sts on the edge, so both are counted. The 4 outer corner sts are included in these counts.

Round 1: Join the yarn anywhere. Sc in each st and work 3 sc in each outer corner st. Join.
– Sts between the corner centers: 189 on each short side and 243 on each long side
– Total: 2 x 189 + 2 x 243 + 4 corner centers = 868 sc

Round 2: Sl st to a corner center and work (sc, ch 3, sc) in it. Ch 2, skip 1, sc in the next st; repeat across the side. Then ch 2, skip 1, and work (sc, ch 3, sc) in the next corner center. Repeat on each side and join.
– Short side: 189 sts = 94 pairs of (skip 1, sc) + 1 skipped st = 95 ch-2 loops
– Long side: 243 sts = 121 pairs + 1 skipped st = 122 ch-2 loops

Round 3: Sl st into the corner loop. Work (3 dc, picot, 3 dc) in each corner loop. Along each side: sc in the next loop, ch 2, sc in the next loop, (2 dc, picot, 2 dc) in the next loop. Repeat, and end with sc, ch 2, sc in the last 2 loops before the corner. Join, fasten off, and weave in the ends.
– Short side: 95 = 31 x 3 + 2 = 31 points
– Long side: 122 = 40 x 3 + 2 = 40 points

Why the math works: Round 2 needs an odd number of sts between the corners. Because 27, 7, and 9 are all odd, both 189 and 243 are odd. Round 3 needs a multiple of 3 plus 2 loops, which 95 and 122 both are, so every side is symmetrical. Rounds 1–2 add about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) and Round 3 adds about 1.25 in (3.2 cm), for a 2 in (5.1 cm) border.

Final Blocking

  1. Lay the bedspread RS up on blocking mats or on towels over a carpet.
  2. Mist the whole piece until it is evenly damp, without soaking it.
  3. Pin the 4 corners so the piece measures 67 x 85 in (170.2 x 215.9 cm).
  4. Pin along each edge and pin out every border point.
  5. Straighten the seams so the rows of squares are straight.
  6. Fluff the leaves and popcorns with your fingers. Do not pin them flat.
  7. Let it dry completely, about 24 hours, before you unpin it.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each square has 27 sts per side, corner sts included
  • All squares are 9 in (22.9 cm), give or take 0.25 in (0.6 cm)
  • Each wreath has 12 popcorns and 36 leaves
  • All bows point the same way
  • The seams are flat, with no gaps at the 4-way corners
  • The short sides have 31 border points and the long sides have 40
  • All ends are woven in securely

Troubleshooting

  • The square cups: Round 5 is too tight. Loosen your dc and check that there are 5 dc in each side loop.
  • The square ruffles: Check for exactly 16 loops in Round 4. If it still ruffles, use ch 4 instead of ch 5.
  • The wreath curls inward: Make the foundation chain with a hook one size larger.
  • The popcorns are flat: Push each one toward the RS as you close it.
  • The border waves: Recount Round 1. Each side should have 189 or 243 sts between the corners.
  • The border pulls in: Use ch-3 loops instead of ch-2 loops in Round 2.

Care

Hand wash in cool water, or machine wash on a gentle cycle in a large laundry bag. Lay flat to dry, and shape the leaves while the bedspread is still damp.

Final Notes

Each measurement leads to the next. At 3 sc per inch, a square with 27 sts per side measures 9 in (22.9 cm). A grid of 7 x 9 squares measures 63 x 81 in (160.0 x 205.7 cm). The border starts with 189 and 243 sts per side and adds 2 in (5.1 cm) all around, for a finished size of 67 x 85 in (170.2 x 215.9 cm). Once your first square measures correctly, the rest of the numbers follow.

Happy crocheting!
