The Garden Breeze Door Curtain is made of long, airy lace strips that sway with every breeze. Each strip is a column of open chain diamonds held together by small knot rings, ending in a rounded fan tip. Light passes straight through, so the doorway stays bright while the opening is softly screened.
The colors are soft mint green and soft lavender, alternated across the rod. Five mint strips and four lavender strips give a calm, garden-style look that suits a porch door, sunroom, or closet opening.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain measures 32.25 in (81.9 cm) wide and 71 in (180.3 cm) long. Each strip is 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide.
Construction is simple. You make nine separate strips from the top down: a hanging loop, a top knot, 22 diamonds, and a fan tip. The strips are not sewn together. Each one slides onto the rod by its own loop.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 32.25 in (81.9 cm) wide x 71 in (180.3 cm) long
- Skill level: Easy
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 9 strips (5 mint, 4 lavender)
- Layout: 1 row of 9 strips on a rod, spaced 3.75 in (9.5 cm) center to center
- Piece size: 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide x 71 in (180.3 cm) long
- Size before border: 2.25 in (5.7 cm) x 69 in (175.3 cm) per strip
- Border depth: 2 in (5.1 cm) fan tip at the bottom of each strip
Materials
Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton. Cotton gives crisp chains, clear knots, and enough weight to hang straight. Acrylic also works, but it is lighter, so the strips may drift or twist more.
Quantities below assume about 190 m per 100 g (about 208 yd per 100 g):
- Mint green: 140 g (266 m / 291 yd), for 5 strips
- Lavender: 110 g (209 m / 229 yd), for 4 strips
One strip uses about 45 m (49 yd). All quantities include a margin of about 15% for the test strip, tails, and small differences in tension.
Tools:
- 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Wooden curtain rod at least 34 in (86.4 cm) long and no more than 1.25 in (3.2 cm) in diameter
- Rustproof pins and a spray bottle for blocking
- Optional: 9 stitch markers
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- st(s) – stitch(es)
Special stitch – Knot Ring: Ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook to form a small ring. You finish the ring later by working 6 sc into its center. A finished knot is about 0.6 in (1.5 cm) across.
Strand: A plain length of chains that runs from one knot ring to the next. Each diamond has three strands.
Gauge and Checkpoints
This design uses chain gauge: 5 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm), measured relaxed, not stretched.
Make one test strip before starting the full set. Work the hanging loop, the top knot, and 3 diamonds. Then check:
- Hanging loop: 24 ch measures 4.8 in (12.2 cm) before closing.
- Center strand: 12 ch measures 2.4 in (6.1 cm).
- Outer strand: 16 ch measures 3.2 in (8.1 cm).
- One diamond: 3 in (7.6 cm) from the bottom of one knot to the bottom of the next.
- Three diamonds: 9 in (22.9 cm).
- Width: 2.25 in (5.7 cm) at the widest point of a diamond, hanging under its own weight.
If your diamonds are longer than 3 in (7.6 cm), go down to a 4.5 mm hook. If they are shorter, go up to a 5.5 mm hook. Chain gauge is very sensitive to tension, so keep every chain the same size and don’t pull tight on the long strands.
You can keep the test strip and continue it into your first full strip.

Strip Pattern
Make 9 strips. Work each strip in one continuous piece from top to bottom.
Hanging Loop and Top Knot
Hanging loop: Ch 24, sl st in first ch to form a loop. Do not twist the chain. The loop measures 4.8 in (12.2 cm) around and hangs 2.4 in (6.1 cm) tall when folded over the rod.
Top knot (Knot A): Ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook to form a ring. Work 6 sc in the ring. (6 sc)
Together, the hanging loop and top knot measure 3 in (7.6 cm) from the top of the loop to the bottom of the knot.
Diamond Repeat
Each diamond starts at the bottom of a finished knot (Knot A) and ends with a new finished knot (Knot B). Keep strand 1 on the left and strand 2 on the right. Lay the work flat as you go so the strands do not twist.
- Strand 1 (left, outer): Ch 16.
- New knot ring (Knot B): Ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook. Do not work sc yet.
- Strand 2 (right, outer): Ch 16, sl st into the center of Knot A, working around the existing sc.
- Strand 3 (center): Ch 12, sl st into the center of Knot B.
- Finish Knot B: Work 6 sc in Knot B, working over the strand ends. (6 sc)
Diamond stitch count: 3 strands of 16, 16, and 12 ch, 4 ch for the ring, 3 sl st, and 6 sc. That is 48 ch per diamond.
The outer strands are 4 ch longer than the center strand. That extra 0.8 in (2.0 cm) makes each one bow out about 1 in (2.5 cm) to its side, which gives the diamond its shape.
The finished Knot B becomes Knot A for the next diamond.
Repeat the Diamond Repeat until you have 22 diamonds and 23 knots in total, counting the top knot. Do not fasten off.
Checkpoint: The 22 diamonds measure 66 in (167.6 cm). The whole strip, including the hanging loop and top knot, measures 69 in (175.3 cm). Go straight on to the Fan Tip in the Border section, then fasten off.
Make All Pieces
Make 9 strips in total, each finished with its Fan Tip:
- Mint green: 5 strips
- Lavender: 4 strips
Each strip has 1 hanging loop, 23 knots, 22 diamonds, and 1 fan tip.
Layout grid (left to right on the rod):
ROD: MINT LAVENDER MINT LAVENDER MINT LAVENDER MINT LAVENDER MINT
Before hanging, lay all the strips flat side by side and compare their lengths. They should match within 0.5 in (1.3 cm).
Joining
The strips are not joined to each other. There are no side seams and no stitches connecting one strip to the next. The rod is the only join.
Method: Remove one end cap from the rod. Slide the hanging loops on in layout order, starting with the first mint strip.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Each strip hangs from its own closed 24-ch loop and carries its own weight. No stitches are shared between strips, so each one moves freely.
Spacing: Space the strips 3.75 in (9.5 cm) center to center. This leaves a gap of 1.5 in (3.8 cm) between strips (3.75 in minus 2.25 in). A small piece of tape on the rod at each position helps while you adjust.
Tension advice: Do not pull the loops tight around the rod. Let each strip hang for 24 hours before you take final measurements, because cotton chains relax a little under their own weight.
Size checkpoint: Eight spaces of 3.75 in (9.5 cm) plus one strip width of 2.25 in (5.7 cm) gives 32.25 in (81.9 cm). The hanging length is 71 in (180.3 cm) from the top of the loops.
Border: Fan Tip
On this curtain, the border is the fan tip at the bottom of each strip. Work it right after the last diamond, while your hook is still at Knot B of diamond 22.
Border gauge: The fan holds 12 dc and measures 2.25 in (5.7 cm) across, the same as the strip width.
Tip ring: Ch 5, sl st in 5th ch from hook to form a ring. The ring sits directly below the last knot.
Row 1 (fan): Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 11 dc in the tip ring. (12 dc, counting the ch-3)
Do not join. The 12 dc open into a rounded fan that hangs below the knot.
Row 2 (edging): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, (ch 3, sc in next dc) 11 times, working the last sc in the top of the ch-3. (12 sc and 11 ch-3 loops)
Finish: Ch 1, sl st into the tip ring. Fasten off and weave the tail in through the dc.
Why the math works: Row 2 puts exactly 1 sc on each of the 12 dc from Row 1, with 1 ch-3 loop between each pair. Twelve stitches leave 11 gaps, so there are 11 loops. The loops add length to the outer edge, which lets the fan lie open instead of cupping. The fan is 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide, the same as the diamonds, so the strip ends without flaring or narrowing.
Depth: The tip ring, fan, and edging add 2 in (5.1 cm). That brings each strip from 69 in (175.3 cm) to 71 in (180.3 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all tails before blocking.
- Soak each strip in cool water for 10 minutes. Gently press out the water in a towel. Do not wring.
- Lay the strip flat on a blocking mat or towel.
- Pin the top knot and the bottom fan so the strip measures 71 in (180.3 cm). Do not stretch it past this length.
- Pin each diamond open to 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide, with the outer strands curved evenly.
- Pin the fan into a smooth half circle and open each ch-3 loop.
- Let the strip dry completely before removing the pins.
- Repeat for all 9 strips, then hang them.
If you are short on floor space, hang the damp strips on the rod and clip a clothespin to each fan tip as a light weight.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- 9 strips: 5 mint, 4 lavender
- Each strip has a 24-ch hanging loop
- Each strip has 22 diamonds and 23 knots
- Every knot has 6 sc
- Outer strands are 16 ch, center strands are 12 ch
- Each fan has 12 dc and 11 ch-3 loops
- Each strip is 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide and 71 in (180.3 cm) long
- Strips are spaced 3.75 in (9.5 cm) center to center
- Total width is 32.25 in (81.9 cm)
- All tails are woven in securely
Troubleshooting
Strips are different lengths. Count the diamonds first. If the counts match, re-block the shorter strip and pin it to 71 in (180.3 cm).
Diamonds look like straight lines. The outer strands may be too short or chained too tightly. Check that each outer strand has 16 ch, and loosen your tension.
Strands twist around each other. Lay the work flat after every diamond. Keep strand 1 on the left and strand 2 on the right.
Knots look lumpy. Spread the 6 sc evenly around the ring and over the strand ends instead of stacking them on top of each other.
Fan cups or ruffles. Check for exactly 12 dc and 11 ch-3 loops. If the fan cups, try ch-4 loops. If it ruffles, try ch-2 loops.
Strips drift or tangle. Re-space them on the rod and let them hang for 24 hours. Cotton yarn helps them stay straight.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out the water in a towel, and dry flat or on the rod. Re-pin the diamonds if they lose their shape.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. Chain gauge is 5 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm). One diamond is 3 in (7.6 cm), so 22 diamonds are 66 in (167.6 cm). Add 3 in (7.6 cm) for the hanging loop and top knot to reach 69 in (175.3 cm). Then add 2 in (5.1 cm) for the fan tip to reach 71 in (180.3 cm).
Across the doorway, 9 strips spaced 3.75 in (9.5 cm) apart cover 32.25 in (81.9 cm).
To fit a different door, add or remove one diamond for every 3 in (7.6 cm) of length. Add or remove one strip for every 3.75 in (9.5 cm) of width, and keep the mint and lavender order.
Happy crocheting!
