This curtain is made of hanging strands of lacy crochet motifs. White six-point snowflakes alternate with dusty blue openwork diamonds. Short chains threaded with natural wooden beads link the motifs together. Each strand ends in a soft tassel, and the tassel colors alternate across the curtain.
The colors are calm and wintry: white, soft blue, and warm wood. Hung in front of a window or glass door, the open motifs let light through and still frame the view.
All instructions use US crochet terms. The finished curtain measures about 49.5 in (125.7 cm) wide and 84 in (213.4 cm) long, from the top of the hanging loops to the tips of the tassels.
The construction is simple and modular. You crochet 65 snowflakes and 65 diamonds and add a picot border to each diamond. Then you link the motifs into 10 vertical strands with beaded chain connectors. Each strand gets a hanging loop at the top and a tassel at the bottom.

Materials
Choose a smooth DK cotton, either mercerized or combed. Cotton holds the lace shape, hangs straight, and stretches less than acrylic over a long drop. The amounts below assume 50 g / 115 m balls.
- White: 250 g (575 m), 5 balls, for the snowflakes, connectors, hanging loops, and white tassels
- Dusty blue: 300 g (690 m), 6 balls, for the diamonds and blue tassels
Both amounts include a margin of about 15% to cover gauge differences, swatching, and tassel trimming.
Tools:
- 3.5 mm (E/4) crochet hook
- 130 wooden beads, 12 mm, with holes at least 4 mm wide
- Tapestry needle
- Cardboard strip 4.5 in (11.4 cm) wide, for wrapping tassels
- Scissors, stitch markers, and a tape measure
- Blocking mat, rustproof pins, and a spray bottle
- Curtain rod or tension rod at least 52 in (132.1 cm) long
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sk = skip
- sp = space
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- rep = repeat
- Rnd = round
Special stitch: picot (p): ch 3, sl st in the 3rd ch from the hook.
Corner stitch: on the diamond, this is the middle sc of each 3-sc corner group.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Before anything else, make and block one snowflake and one diamond. Every measurement in the curtain depends on these two pieces.
Snowflake checkpoints:
- After Rnd 1: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across
- After Rnd 3: 3.25 in (8.3 cm) across, from shell tip to shell tip
- Finished and blocked: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) from one ch-5 tip to the opposite ch-5 tip
Diamond checkpoints:
- After Rnd 1: 1.1 in (2.8 cm) per side
- After Rnd 2: 1.8 in (4.6 cm) per side
- After Rnd 3: 2.4 in (6.1 cm) per side
- After Rnd 4: 2.7 in (6.9 cm) per side
- After the border: 3.2 in (8.1 cm) per side and 4.5 in (11.4 cm) point to point, measured between corner stitches
If your motifs are too big, switch to a 3.25 mm hook. If they are too small, switch to a 3.75 mm hook. An error of 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per motif adds up to 3.25 in (8.3 cm) over a 13-motif strand, so correct your gauge now.

Part 1: Snowflake (make 65 in White)
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 17 dc in the ring, and sl st to the top of the ch-3. Pull the ring closed but leave a small hole in the center. (18 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, sk 2 dc; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc. (6 sc, 6 ch-5 sps)
Rnd 3: Sl st in first ch-5 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2; (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2; rep from * 4 more times. Your last sc goes into the sc you joined into at the end of Rnd 2. Sl st to top of ch-3. (24 dc, 6 sc, 6 ch-3 tips, 12 ch-2 sps)
Each (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) shell forms the V-shaped base of one snowflake arm.
Rnd 4: Sl st in next dc and in ch-3 tip, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 5, sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 tip, ch 2, p, ch 2, sk 2 dc and ch-2 sp, sc in next sc, ch 2, p, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp and 2 dc; rep from * 5 more times, sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (30 sc, 6 ch-5 tips, 12 ch-3 loops, 12 picots)
Each arm now ends in a three-loop trefoil tip and has one picot on each side. Weave in the ends.
Part 2: Diamond (make 65 in Dusty Blue)
The diamond is a square motif that hangs on point.
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 3, 3 dc in ring, ch 3; rep from * 2 more times, sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc, 4 ch-3 corner sps)
Rnd 2: Sl st in next 2 dc and in corner sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 2; rep from * 2 more times, sl st to top of ch-3. (24 dc, 4 corner sps, 4 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc and in corner sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3; rep from * 2 more times, sl st to top of ch-3. (24 dc, 4 sc, 4 corner sps, 8 ch-3 side sps)
The ch-3 side spaces make the lacy windows along each edge.
Rnd 4 (conversion round): Ch 1, sc in same st and next 2 dc, 3 sc in corner sp, sc in next 3 dc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in next sc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in next 3 dc, 3 sc in corner sp, sc in next 3 dc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in next sc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp; rep from * 2 more times, sl st to first sc.
Stitch count: 28 sc worked one per existing st (24 dc + 4 sc), plus 36 sc added (3 in each of the 8 side sps and 4 corner sps), for a total of 64 sc.
Each side has 15 sc between its corner stitches. Including both corner stitches, each side has 17 sc. Because neighboring sides share their corners, 4 x 17 = 68, minus 4 shared corners, gives 64.
Don’t fasten off. Work the border round from the Border section on every diamond before you join anything.
Part 3: Tassels (make 5 in White and 5 in Dusty Blue)
Wrap the yarn 25 times around the 4.5 in (11.4 cm) card. Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) tie strand under the wraps at the top and knot it tightly. Cut through the loops at the bottom. Wrap a second strand 6 times around the bundle, 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top, and knot it. Bury the ends in the center of the tassel. Trim the tassel to 4 in (10.2 cm), but keep the top tie ends long so you can attach it.
Make All Pieces
- White: 65 snowflakes, 5 tassels
- Dusty blue: 65 diamonds, 5 tassels
There are two types of strand:
- Strand A starts and ends with a snowflake (7 snowflakes, 6 diamonds) and gets a blue tassel.
- Strand B starts and ends with a diamond (7 diamonds, 6 snowflakes) and gets a white tassel.
You need five of each type, so 5 x 7 + 5 x 6 = 65 of each motif.

Joining
Motifs are joined vertically with beaded chain connectors in White. The strands are not joined to each other.
Connection points: On a snowflake, use the ch-5 tip of one arm as the top. Use the ch-5 tip of the opposite arm (3 arms away) as the bottom. On a diamond, use two opposite corner ch-3 loops.
Connector (1.5 in / 3.8 cm): Thread one bead onto the White yarn. Sl st into the bottom loop of the upper motif and ch 4. Slide the bead up against the hook and ch 1 around the bead to lock it in place. Ch 4 more, then sl st into the top loop of the next motif. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Each strand needs 12 connectors between its 13 motifs. Add a 13th connector below the last motif, but skip its final sl st. Instead, pull the tassel’s top strands through the last chain and knot them securely.
Hanging loop (2 in / 5.1 cm): Join White in the top loop of the first motif, ch 16, and sl st into the same loop. Fasten off.
Tension: Chain at your normal tension, not tighter. Tight connectors pull the tips into sharp points, and loose ones let the beads slide and twist. Each connector should measure 1.5 in (3.8 cm) when laid flat, including the bead.
Size checkpoint: One motif plus one connector measures 6 in (15.2 cm), so each pair of motifs adds 12 in (30.5 cm). Together, the 13 motifs and 12 connectors measure 76.5 in (194.3 cm). The hanging loop brings that to 78.5 in (199.4 cm). The bottom connector brings it to 80 in (203.2 cm), and the tassel finishes the strand at 84 in (213.4 cm).
Border
The border goes on the diamonds only. Work it as Rnd 5, continuing in Dusty Blue straight from Rnd 4.
Border gauge: 15 sc between corner stitches over 2.7 in (6.9 cm). The border adds 0.25 in (0.6 cm) to each edge, which makes each side 3.2 in (8.1 cm).
Rnd 5: Sl st in next 4 sts to reach the first corner st. Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner st, sc in next 3 sts, [(sc, p) in next st, sc in next 3 sts] 3 times, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner st; rep from * 2 more times, sc in next 3 sts, [(sc, p) in next st, sc in next 3 sts] 3 times, sl st to first sc.
On the last side, work the sc into the Rnd 4 stitches underneath your starting slip stitches. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Counts per side: Each side gets 15 sc and 3 picots, and each corner gets 2 sc. The total is 4 x 15 + 4 x 2 = 68 sc, plus 12 picots and 4 corner ch-3 loops.
Why the math works: Each side has 15 stitches. The side sequence uses 3 + (3 x 4) = 15 stitches, so the picots land on the 4th, 8th, and 12th stitches. One picot sits at the exact center of the side, with one evenly spaced on each side of it. That keeps every side symmetrical, and the corner loops sit on true points.
Final Blocking
- Block all the motifs before joining. Soak each one, then roll it in a towel to remove excess water.
- Snowflakes: pin the center hole into a round shape. Pin each ch-5 tip outward to a 4.5 in (11.4 cm) circle, and pin each trefoil loop and picot open.
- Diamonds: pin into a square with 3.2 in (8.1 cm) sides, and check that they measure 4.5 in (11.4 cm) point to point. Pin the corner loops straight out.
- Let everything dry completely, about 12 hours.
- After joining, hang the curtain and lightly mist any twisted strands. Smooth each tassel straight while it’s damp.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- 65 snowflakes, each 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip
- 65 diamonds, each 3.2 in (8.1 cm) per side, with 68 sc in the border
- 130 connectors, each 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long with one bead
- Snowflakes hang from opposite ch-5 tips, not from picots
- Strand types alternate A, B, A, B across the rod
- Tassel colors alternate blue and white
- Every strand measures 84 in (213.4 cm)
- All ends are woven in for at least 1 in (2.5 cm)
Troubleshooting
The snowflake cups instead of lying flat: the Rnd 2 chains are too tight. Loosen them, or try ch 6 instead of ch 5.
The snowflake ruffles: the chains are too loose, or Rnd 1 has extra dc. Recount to make sure you have 18 dc.
The diamond corners curl: check that each corner sp in Rnd 4 has exactly 3 sc.
The picots are off-center: recount Rnd 4. Each side needs 15 sc between its corner stitches.
A strand twists when hung: make sure the top and bottom loops are directly opposite each other. Mist the strand and let it hang to relax.
The strands are different lengths: measure each connector and redo any that are off by more than 0.25 in (0.6 cm).
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Press out the water in a towel, then lay each strand flat or hang it to dry. Don’t tumble dry, because the strands will tangle.

Final Notes
Here is the full measurement chain. A snowflake measures 4.5 in (11.4 cm). A diamond measures 2.7 in (6.9 cm) per side before the border and 3.2 in (8.1 cm) after it, which gives 4.5 in (11.4 cm) point to point. Each motif plus its connector adds 6 in (15.2 cm). Thirteen motifs, 12 connectors, a hanging loop, a bottom connector, and a tassel make a strand 84 in (213.4 cm) long. Ten strands spaced 5 in (12.7 cm) apart span 49.5 in (125.7 cm).
If your first snowflake and diamond match the gauge, the rest of the curtain will come out the right size.
Happy crocheting!
