The Teal Canopy Curtain is a hanging screen of layered crochet leaves that turns a window or glass door into a soft green canopy. Each leaf has tiers of overlapping scallops across its upper half and a ribbed, pointed tip below, so light catches every edge.
The whole curtain is worked in one deep teal cotton. Fifteen beaded cords hang from a lace header band with triangular points, and every cord carries five leaves. Alternate cords start lower, so the leaves sit in a staggered, natural rhythm. The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.
The finished curtain is 45 in (114.3 cm) wide. Odd-numbered strands hang 57.25 in (145.4 cm) from the top edge, and even-numbered strands hang 60.75 in (154.3 cm). Each leaf is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide and 7 in (17.8 cm) long.
The curtain is built in modules. You make ribbed base leaves around a chain spine, crochet small scallop strips and sew them on in four tiers, and make hollow beads. Then you chain each cord with its beads pre-strung. The header band and its points come last, and the cords hang from the point tips.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 45 in (114.3 cm) wide; 57.25 in (145.4 cm) and 60.75 in (154.3 cm) long on alternating strands
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 75 leaves, 300 scallop tiers, 150 beads, 15 cords, 1 header
- Layout: 15 strands x 5 leaves
- Leaf size: 3 in x 7 in (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm)
- Header size before points: 45 in x 1 in (114.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
- Border (point) depth: 3.25 in (8.3 cm)
Materials
Choose a smooth, firmly plied worsted cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds the scallops crisply and stretches very little under the weight of the strands. Avoid fuzzy yarns, which blur the ribbing.
- Deep Teal: 1,100 g, about 1,870 m (2,045 yd), for example 11 balls of 100 g / 170 m (186 yd)
Tools:
- 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
- Large-eye tapestry needle
- Locking stitch markers
- Rust-proof pins and blocking mats
- Tape measure
- Spray bottle
- 15 curtain ring clips, or a slim tension rod up to 0.5 in (1.3 cm) thick
Yarn quantities include a margin of about 10% for swatching, sewing tails and small tension differences.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- dc2tog – double crochet 2 together
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
Special stitch – beginning decrease (beg dec): Ch 2, dc in next st. This counts as one dc2tog at the start of a row.
Special technique – bead lock: Slide one pre-strung bead up against the hook, then ch 1 snugly to trap it in the cord. One bead lock (the bead plus its chain) measures about 0.75 in (1.9 cm).
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 16 rows of BLO sc = 4 in (10.2 cm). Cord gauge: 4 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm), worked firmly.
Before anything else, make one complete leaf with its four tiers. It is your real swatch.
- After leaf Row 1: 5.75 in (14.6 cm) long, 0.5 in (1.3 cm) wide.
- After leaf Row 6: 3 in x 7 in (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm).
- Large tier: about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide and 1.25 in (3.2 cm) deep.
- Small tier: about 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide and 1 in (2.5 cm) deep.
- Bead: about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across.
If your leaf is too big, go down a hook size. If it is too small, go up a hook size. If the length is right but the width is off, the BLO rows are the problem. Adjust your loop height rather than changing the hook.

Part A: Base Leaf (make 75)
The leaf is worked in turned rows of BLO sc around a chain spine. Each row adds 3 sc at the tip and stops 1 st short at the stem. This shapes a narrow stem, a pointed tip and V-shaped ribs.
Row 1: Ch 23. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 20 ch, then 3 sc in last ch (tip). Working along the opposite side of the chain, sc in next 21 ch. Turn. (45 sts: 21 + 3 + 21)
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count). Sc BLO in next 22 sts, 3 sc BLO in next st (center tip st), sc BLO in next 21 sts, leave last st unworked. Turn. (46 sts)
Rows 3–6: Ch 1, sc BLO in each st up to the center st of the 3-sc tip group, 3 sc BLO in center st, sc BLO in each st up to the last st, leave last st unworked. Turn.
Stitch counts: Row 3: 47 sts. Row 4: 48 sts. Row 5: 49 sts. Row 6: 50 sts.
Each row works into all but 1 st of the previous row and adds 2 sts at the tip, so it ends up exactly 1 st longer. Row 6 ends at the stem. Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail for sewing. The original chain stays visible as the center vein.
Part B: Scallop Tiers
Each tier is one strip with two rounded scallops that meet at the center. The strips are sewn across the leaf so the scallops hang toward the tip.
Small Tier (make 75)
Row 1: Ch 8. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (7 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, skip next sc, 7 dc in next sc, sc in next sc (center), 7 dc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in last sc. Turn. (17 sts: 3 sc + 14 dc)
Row 3 (trim): Ch 1, sc in first sc, [sc in next 3 dc, 3 sc in next dc, sc in next 3 dc], sc in center sc, repeat [ ] once, sc in last sc. (21 sts: 17 worked 1 per st + 4 extra)
Fasten off, leaving an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail.
Large Tier (make 225)
Row 1: Ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (9 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, skip next sc, 9 dc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in next sc (center), skip next sc, 9 dc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in last sc. Turn. (21 sts: 3 sc + 18 dc)
Row 3 (trim): Ch 1, sc in first sc, [sc in next 4 dc, 3 sc in next dc, sc in next 4 dc], sc in center sc, repeat [ ] once, sc in last sc. (25 sts: 21 worked 1 per st + 4 extra)
Fasten off, leaving an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail.
Attaching Tiers
Lay the leaf RS up with the stem at the top. Sew each tier’s Row 1 edge in a straight horizontal line across the leaf. Keep the center sc on the vein and the scallops hanging down toward the tip.
- Small tier: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the stem end.
- Large tier 1: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) below the stem end.
- Large tier 2: 2.5 in (6.4 cm) below the stem end.
- Large tier 3: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) below the stem end.
Whipstitch through the foundation loops and the front layer of the leaf only, so nothing shows on the back. Each tier covers the seam of the tier below it. The lowest scallops end about 4.75 in (12.1 cm) below the stem, leaving about 2.25 in (5.7 cm) of plain ribbed tip.
Part C: Beads (make 150)
Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. Do not pull the ring fully closed. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Sc in each st. (12 sts)
Rnd 4: Sc2tog 6 times. (6 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the ends without closing the top. The open ring and the open top form a channel about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) wide for threading.
Make All Pieces
Make these totals, all in Deep Teal:
- 75 base leaves (5 per strand)
- 75 small tiers and 225 large tiers (1 small + 3 large per leaf)
- 150 beads (10 per strand)
- 15 cords (8 odd, 7 even)
- 1 header with 15 points
Layout, left to right (O = odd strand, E = even strand):
Strands 1-15: O E O E O E O E O E O E O E O
Odd (O): lead 3 in (7.6 cm) | 5 leaves | end bead
Even (E): lead 6.5 in (16.5 cm) | 5 leaves | end bead
Joining: Cords and Assembly
Cords
Before chaining each cord, use the tapestry needle to thread 10 beads onto the yarn. Leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) starting tail.
Odd strand (make 8):
- Lead: Ch 6, bead lock, ch 3. (3 in / 7.6 cm)
- Leaf section: Ch 28. (7 in / 17.8 cm)
- Connector: Bead lock, ch 4, bead lock, ch 4. (3.5 in / 8.9 cm)
- Repeat steps 2–3 three more times, then work step 2 once more. (5 leaf sections, 4 connectors)
- End: Bead lock, ch 1, fasten off. (1 in / 2.5 cm)
Total: 182 ch plus 10 bead locks, 53 in (134.6 cm).
Even strand (make 7): Work as for the odd strand, but make the lead ch 20, bead lock, ch 3 (6.5 in / 16.5 cm). Total: 196 ch plus 10 bead locks, 56.5 in (143.5 cm).
Leaves to Cords
Place each leaf RS up over a 28-ch leaf section, stem at the top, so the cord runs behind the vein. Using the leaf’s tail, whipstitch the vein to the cord every 2 to 3 ch, going through the back of the leaf only. The leaf tip should sit just above the first bead of the connector below it.
Keep the tension relaxed. If you pull too tight, the cord shortens and the leaf cups. Lay each finished strand flat and check it: odd strands should measure 53 in (134.6 cm) and even strands 56.5 in (143.5 cm).
Border: Header Band and Points
The header is this curtain’s border. It uses the same gauge as the leaves: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Row 1: Ch 181. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (180 sc)
Row 2 (mesh): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next sc, *ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next sc; repeat from * across. Turn. (91 dc + 89 ch-1 spaces = 180 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each dc and in each ch-1 space across. Fasten off. (180 sc)
The band now measures 45 in x 1 in (114.3 cm x 2.5 cm).
Points (make 15)
Place a marker every 12 sts along Row 3. With RS facing, work each point separately into its own 12-st section.
Row 1: Join yarn in first st of the section, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 11 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 2: Beg dec, dc in next 8 sts, dc2tog. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 3: Beg dec, dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 4: Beg dec, dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 5: Beg dec, dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: Beg dec, dc2tog. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 7: Ch 1, sc2tog. Fasten off. (1 st)
Each point is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide at the top and 3.25 in (8.3 cm) deep.
Why the Math Works
There are 15 strands, and each hangs from one point. Each point uses 12 sts, so the band needs 15 x 12 = 180 sts. At 4 sc per inch, 180 sts = 45 in (114.3 cm). That puts each strand 3 in (7.6 cm) from its neighbor, which matches the 3 in (7.6 cm) leaf width. Row 2 keeps the count at 180 because each ch-1 space replaces exactly one skipped st, and Row 3 puts back 1 sc per dc and 1 sc per space.
Header depth is 1 in (2.5 cm) for the band plus 3.25 in (8.3 cm) for the points, so 4.25 in (10.8 cm). Adding the cords gives 57.25 in (145.4 cm) for odd strands and 60.75 in (154.3 cm) for even strands.
Hanging the Strands
Sew the starting tail of each cord to the Row 7 sc of its point. Alternate odd and even strands from left to right, starting and ending with an odd strand. Knot securely, because each strand carries real weight.
Final Blocking
- Lay the curtain flat on a clean floor or on several blocking mats.
- Pin the header straight to 45 in (114.3 cm), pinning each point to a sharp tip.
- Pin each leaf to 3 in x 7 in (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm), shaping the tip to a point.
- Ease each scallop into a round shape so it lies flat over the tier below.
- Mist lightly with water until damp, not soaked.
- Let the curtain dry completely, usually about 24 hours.
- Unpin and hang it. Gravity will finish relaxing the cords within a day.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- The header measures 45 in (114.3 cm) and has 15 evenly spaced points.
- Every leaf has 50 sts in Row 6 and measures 3 in x 7 in (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm).
- Each leaf has 1 small tier and 3 large tiers, centered on the vein.
- Every strand has 5 leaves and 10 beads.
- Odd strands measure 53 in (134.6 cm) and even strands 56.5 in (143.5 cm).
- Strands alternate odd and even, starting and ending with odd.
- All ends are woven in and all knots are secure.
Troubleshooting
- Leaf curls sideways: You probably missed BLO on a row or worked into the stem st you should have skipped. Recount; each row should be exactly 1 st longer than the one before.
- Tip is rounded, not pointed: Always put the 3 sc in the center st of the previous tip group.
- Scallops ruffle: Your dc are too loose. Go down one hook size for the tiers only.
- Scallops stand up instead of hanging: Sew only the Row 1 edge, and sew it with the scallops already pointing toward the tip.
- Beads slide along the cord: Work the bead-lock ch more snugly.
- Strands twist: Mist the curtain while it hangs and let it dry straight.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, then dry flat and reshape the scallops. Between washes, dust gently with a soft brush.

Final Notes
Every measurement in this curtain follows from your gauge. At 16 sc to 4 in (10.2 cm), each leaf blocks to 3 in x 7 in (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm), and each 28-ch leaf section matches that 7 in (17.8 cm) length. The cords reach 53 in (134.6 cm) or 56.5 in (143.5 cm). Fifteen 12-st points make a 180-st, 45 in (114.3 cm) header with 3.25 in (8.3 cm) points. That gives total lengths of 57.25 in (145.4 cm) and 60.75 in (154.3 cm).
Check your first leaf, keep your stitch counts accurate, and the curtain will come together evenly. Happy crocheting!
