Violet Lantern Hairpin Lace Curtain Crochet Pattern

These curtain panels are made from long hairpin lace strips. Fanned loops on each strip form stacked oval “lantern” pods, and a small knot pinches the spine between every two pods. Open chain diamonds with tiny ring nodes connect the strips, so light comes through in a steady vertical rhythm.

The sample is worked in one saturated violet-purple cotton. With a single color, the texture does the work: the fanned loops, tight waists, and chain lattice read well against a bright window. The look is boho-classic, airy but structured.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each finished panel measures 30 in wide x 85.5 in long (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm), and the pair hangs from ring clips on a standard rod.

Construction is modular. You make 7 hairpin strips per panel and finish each long edge by gathering the loops into groups of 12. Then you join neighboring strips with a two-pass diamond lattice and work a 3-round single crochet border all the way around.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size (each panel): 30 in x 85.5 in (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: DK / light worsted (weight 3) cotton
  • Hook: US G-6 (4.0 mm), plus a 3 in (7.6 cm) wide hairpin lace loom
  • Number of pieces: 14 strips total, 7 per panel, for 2 panels
  • Layout: 7 strips side by side, with 6 lattice joins, in each panel
  • Strip size: 3 in x 84 in (7.6 cm x 213.4 cm), 28 pods long
  • Lattice join width: 1.25 in (3.2 cm)
  • Panel size before border: 28.5 in x 84 in (72.4 cm x 213.4 cm)
  • Border depth: 0.75 in (1.9 cm) on every side

Materials

Yarn: Use a smooth, mercerized cotton or a cotton blend in DK weight. Cotton holds the loop shapes crisply and hangs straight. Avoid fuzzy or very stretchy fibers, which blur the pods and can make long panels sag.

  • Violet purple: 900 g / about 2,070 m in total, which is 450 g / about 1,035 m per panel (for example, 9 skeins of 100 g / 230 m)

The quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge swatches, tails, and small differences in tension.

Tools:

  • US G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Adjustable hairpin lace loom set to 3 in (7.6 cm)
  • Locking stitch markers (at least 30)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors and measuring tape
  • Blocking space long enough for a 30 in x 85.5 in (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm) panel, plus rust-proof pins
  • 16 curtain ring clips (8 per panel)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sp – space
  • rnd – round

Special stitches

  • Spine sc: On the loom, insert the hook under the front strand of the left loop, yarn over, and draw through. Yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook.
  • Spine knot: Work 3 spine sc into the same front strand instead of 1. This makes a dense bump that pinches the strip between pods.
  • Gather-12 sc: Insert the hook through the next 12 edge loops together (keep every loop twisted the same way), yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook.
  • Ring node: Ch 4, then sl st in the 4th ch from the hook to form a small ring.

Gauge and Checkpoints

  • Hairpin spine: 4 loop pairs = 1 in (2.5 cm), so 12 loop pairs (1 pod) = 3 in (7.6 cm)
  • Chain: 4 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm), measured relaxed
  • Single crochet: 16 sc and 16 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)

Test one piece first. Before starting a full strip, make 2 short strips of 2 pods each (24 loops per side). Edge them and join them with one lattice column, as described below. The swatch should measure 7.25 in wide x 6 in long (18.4 cm x 15.2 cm).

Checkpoints:

  1. Strip on the loom: every 12 loop pairs = 3 in (7.6 cm) along the spine.
  2. Edged strip: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide, with gather points 3 in (7.6 cm) apart.
  3. Joined pair: 7.25 in (18.4 cm) wide.
  4. Full panel before border: 28.5 in x 84 in (72.4 cm x 213.4 cm).

If your swatch is too big, go down one hook size, or tighten the spine sc slightly. If it is too small, go up one hook size. Do not change the loom width, because the 3 in (7.6 cm) loop length sets the pod shape.

Hairpin Strip (Make 14)

Set the loom to 3 in (7.6 cm). Make a slipknot, place it on the left prong, and center the knot between the prongs. Wrap the yarn around the right prong from front to back.

Spine:

  1. Insert the hook into the slipknot loop and work 1 sc into the front strand to fix the start.
  2. Raise the hook to vertical, pass it to the back, and turn the loom one half turn to the left, so that the yarn wraps the new right prong. Work 1 spine sc. This makes loop pair 1.
  3. Repeat the turn and spine sc to make loop pairs 2 through 11.
  4. For loop pair 12, turn the loom and work a spine knot.

That completes 1 pod: 12 loops on the left side, 12 loops on the right side, and 1 knot.

Repeat steps 2–4 until you have 28 pods. The finished strip has 336 loops per side (28 x 12), 28 spine knots, and a spine 84 in (213.4 cm) long.

As the loom fills, slide the loops off the bottom, keeping the top 10–15 pairs on the prongs. Thread a spare strand of contrast yarn through each side to hold the loops, and place a marker after every 5th pod. Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.

Checkpoint: 3 pods = 9 in (22.9 cm) along the spine, measured relaxed.

Strip Edging

Work this edging along each long side of every strip. Each gather-12 sc pulls one pod’s 12 loops to a single point on the edge, halfway up the pod. The loops fan from the spine to that point, which makes the oval lantern shape. The spine knots form the waists between pods.

Edging row (each side):

With the strip’s bottom end facing, join the yarn with a sl st at the bottom end of the spine. Then work:

  1. Ch 6.
  2. Gather-12 sc in the 12 loops of pod 1.
  3. Ch 11, gather-12 sc in the 12 loops of the next pod. Repeat from * 26 more times. This edges pods 2 to 28.
  4. Ch 5, then sl st to the top end of the spine. Fasten off.

Count: 6 ch + 27 x (1 sc + 11 ch) + 1 sc + 5 ch = 336 edge sts per side (the sl sts are not counted). That works out to 12 sts per pod, and 12 sts at 4 sts per inch = 3 in (7.6 cm), which matches the pod length.

Keep a marker in each gather-12 sc on the inner edges, because the lattice attaches there.

Checkpoint: The strip measures 3 in (7.6 cm) across at the gather points, and the gather sc on the left and right edges sit level with each other.

Make All Pieces

  • Violet purple: 14 strips (7 per panel), each edged on both long sides
  • Hold back roughly 50 g / 115 m per panel for the joins and border.

Layout (one panel, viewed from the front; S = strip, J = lattice join):

S1 | J | S2 | J | S3 | J | S4 | J | S5 | J | S6 | J | S7
3" 1.25" 3" 1.25" 3" 1.25" 3" 1.25" 3" 1.25" 3" 1.25" 3"

Each panel has 7 strips x 3 in + 6 joins x 1.25 in = 28.5 in (72.4 cm).

Joining: Two-Pass Diamond Lattice

Each join is worked in 2 passes between a left strip (A) and a right strip (B). Lay A and B flat, bottom ends down, about 1.25 in (3.2 cm) apart, with their gather points level.

Pass 1 (up, attaches to A):

  1. Join the yarn at the bottom end of A’s inner edge with a sl st, between the spine end and the first edge chain. Ch 4 and sl st in the 4th ch from the hook to make the bottom ring node.
  2. Ch 8, sc in the next gather-12 sc on A. Ch 8 and work a ring node. Repeat from * 27 more times.

You now have 28 legs up to A and 28 ring nodes, plus the bottom ring. The last ring sits level with the top end of the strips.

Pass 2 (down, attaches to B):

From the top ring, work: ch 8, sc in the next gather-12 sc on B (counting from the top). Ch 8 and sl st into the center of the next ring node below. Repeat from * to the bottom ring, 28 times in all. Fasten off.

Stitch logic: Each ring node sits at a waist level. Every leg runs diagonally 1.5 in (3.8 cm) up or down and 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across, which comes to about 2 in (5.1 cm), and ch 8 at 4 ch per inch gives exactly that. Together, Passes 1 and 2 enclose one open diamond beside each pod.

Tension: Keep the legs relaxed but straight. Legs that are too tight pull the strips together and cup the pods. Legs that are too loose let the panel droop at the joins.

Join S1 to S2, S2 to S3, and so on through S7. Size checkpoint: after every join, add 4.25 in (10.8 cm) to the width. The fully joined panel measures 28.5 in x 84 in (72.4 cm x 213.4 cm).

Border

Border gauge: 16 sc and 16 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm). That is 4 sc per inch, and 3 rnds = 0.75 in (1.9 cm).

Rnd 1: Join the yarn at the top right corner. Work along the top (short) edge:

  • 12 sc across each strip end: 5 sc in the edge chain and loop ends, 2 sc at the spine end, and 5 sc across the other half
  • 5 sc across each join end: 2 sc over the leg pair, 1 sc in the ring, and 2 sc over the next leg pair

That gives 7 x 12 + 6 x 5 = 114 sc. Ch 2 for the corner.

Down the long side, work 1 sc in each of S7’s 336 edge sts, which gives 336 sc. Ch 2.

Work the bottom edge like the top (114 sc), ch 2. Work up S1’s long side (336 sc), ch 2, and sl st to the first sc. Total: 900 sc and 4 corner ch-2 sps.

Rnd 2: Ch 1. Sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner sp. Sl st to join. Each short side has 116 sc and each long side has 338 sc, for a total of 908 sc.

Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 2. Each short side has 118 sc and each long side has 340 sc, for a total of 916 sc. Fasten off.

Why the math works: 114 sc at 4 per inch = 28.5 in (72.4 cm), which matches the joined width. 336 sc = 84 in (213.4 cm), which matches the strip length. Each round adds exactly 2 sc per side (8 per round), and those are the corner sts that keep the corners square. After 3 rnds, the panel is 30 in x 85.5 in (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm). The long-side count comes from 1 strip x 336 edge sts. The short side counts every strip and join end once, with no extra stitches added at the seams.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends along the spines or the border, then trim.
  2. Soak the panel in cool water for 15 minutes. Press the water out gently, without wringing.
  3. Roll the panel in towels to remove the excess water.
  4. Lay it flat and pin the border to 30 in x 85.5 in (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm).
  5. Pin each gather point so the pods open into even ovals and the lattice diamonds sit square.
  6. Leave it to dry completely, then unpin it.
  7. Clip 8 ring clips along the top border: one at each corner and one above each join.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every strip has 28 pods and 336 loops per side.
  • Every gather-12 sc holds exactly 12 loops, all twisted the same way.
  • The gather points on neighboring strips are level.
  • All 6 joins have 28 diamonds per pass.
  • Border Rnd 3 counts are 118 / 340 / 118 / 340.
  • Each panel measures 30 in x 85.5 in (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm).
  • The two panels match in length within 0.5 in (1.3 cm).

Troubleshooting

  • The pods look lopsided. Some loops are twisted differently. Undo that gather sc and re-twist the loops.
  • The strip is too long. Your spine sc are loose. Tighten them, or go down a hook size, and remake the strip.
  • The strips buckle at the joins. The lattice legs are too short. Rework that pass with ch 9 legs, or ease your tension.
  • The edges ripple. The ch-11 spans are too loose. Work them with a slightly tighter tension.
  • The corners curl. You missed a corner (sc, ch 2, sc). Check the counts per side.
  • The panels hang at different lengths. Re-block the longer panel, pinning it to 85.5 in (217.2 cm).

Care

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then dry flat. Do not hang the panels wet, because the weight of the water stretches the lattice.

Final Notes

The measurements build on each other in a chain:

  • 12 loop pairs = 1 pod of 3 in (7.6 cm), and 28 pods = 84 in (213.4 cm).
  • The edging adds 12 sts per pod, for 336 sts per side.
  • Each strip is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide and each join is 1.25 in (3.2 cm), which gives a 28.5 in (72.4 cm) panel.
  • The 3-round border adds 0.75 in (1.9 cm) to each side, for a finished 30 in x 85.5 in (76.2 cm x 217.2 cm).

Check each step, and the panels will hang straight and match each other.

Happy crocheting!
