This curtain has lacy fan motifs, tiny flowers and swinging tassels, all in one bright raspberry pink. Six fans hang upside down from a slim band to make a scalloped header. Below them, six strands hang down with flowers and two more fans each, and every strand ends in a full tassel.
The look is light and open, so plenty of sunlight comes through. Because there is only one color, the texture does the work: tall puff stitches, round chain arches and thick single crochet scallops. It works well in a kitchen window, on a small door or as a decorative valance. This pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.
The finished curtain is 29.6 in (75.2 cm) wide across the band and 28.75 in (73.0 cm) long from the band to the tassel tips.
How it’s made:
1. Make 18 identical fans.
2. Six of the fans become the header. The first row of the band joins them together.
3. Crochet the strands top to bottom, attaching the other fans as you go.
4. Add the tassels last.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 29.6 in (75.2 cm) wide x 28.75 in (73.0 cm) long
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: DK / light worsted (#3), cotton
- Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
- Number of pieces: 18 fans, 6 tassels and 6 tassel caps. The strands are worked in place.
- Layout: 6 header fans in a row; 6 strands with 2 fans each, at staggered heights
- Piece size: Each fan is 4.6 in (11.7 cm) wide x 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall.
- Size before border: 6 header fans with 0.4 in (1.0 cm) gaps between them = 29.6 in (75.2 cm)
- Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) for the band, plus 0.75 in (1.9 cm) for the ring loops
Materials
Use a smooth mercerized cotton or cotton blend in DK weight. Cotton holds the shape of the puff stitches, keeps the scallops crisp and hangs straight in a window. Fuzzy or very stretchy yarns blur the lace and let the strands stretch longer over time.
- Raspberry Pink: 200 g, about 460 m (503 yd)
These amounts include a margin of about 20% for the test fan and tassel trimming.
Tools:
– 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stiff card 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall, for the tassels
– Rust-proof pins and a blocking mat
– Spray bottle
– Tape measure
– Curtain rod with 8 clip or slide rings
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sp(s): space(s)
- sk: skip
- st(s): stitch(es)
Puff: *Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch or space, and pull up a loop to 3/4 in (1.9 cm). Repeat from * 3 more times (9 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all 9 loops, then ch 1 to close. The closing ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
Flower: Ch 4, then sl st into the first of those 4 ch to form a ring. Work [ch 2, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, sl st in ring] 5 times. This makes 5 petals, about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across. You finish at the ring, ready to keep chaining.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), and 5 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Make one complete fan before you start anything else. Check it at these points:
- After Round 1, the rosette is 1 in (2.5 cm) across.
- After Row 3, the fan is 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide.
- After Row 4, the fan is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) wide.
- After Row 6, the fan is 4.6 in (11.7 cm) wide and 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall.
If your fan is too big, go down 0.5 mm in hook size. If it is too small, go up 0.5 mm. Puff height also changes the size. Pull every loop up to the same 3/4 in (1.9 cm), or the fan will cup or ripple. Measure the test fan again after blocking. All 18 fans need to match, because the band math depends on them.

Fan Motif (Make 18)
The fan is worked from the rosette at the point out to the scalloped edge.
Round 1: Ch 4 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 11 dc in the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3. (12 dc)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Work [dc in next dc, ch 1] 4 times, then dc in next dc. Turn. (6 dc, 5 ch-1 sps)
This row uses dc 1–6 of Round 1. Dc 7–12 stay unworked and form the rounded top of the rosette.
Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Work [dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 4 times. Dc in the 3rd ch of the turning ch. Turn. (11 dc, 10 ch-1 sps)
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Puff in next ch-1 sp, then work [ch 1, puff in next ch-1 sp] 9 times. Dc in the 3rd ch of the turning ch. Turn. (10 puffs, 9 ch-1 sps, 2 dc)
Row 5: Ch 1. Sc in the first dc, ch 5, then sc in the 2nd ch-1 sp. Work [ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp] 3 times. Ch 5, then sc in the top of the turning ch. Turn. (6 sc, 5 ch-5 arches)
The sc go into ch-1 spaces 2, 4, 6 and 8, so the arches come out even on both sides.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in the first sc. Work [9 sc in next ch-5 arch, sc in next sc] 5 times. (51 sc)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Each arch is now a thick scallop with an open center. Stitch 26 is the middle stitch of scallop 3 and the bottom center of the fan. The strands hang from this stitch.

Joining
The first row of the band joins the header fans together. Lay the fans point-down in a straight line, with the scalloped edges facing up. Leave 0.4 in (1.0 cm) between each fan and the next.
Band Row 1 (joining row): With the right side facing, join the yarn in the 5th st of fan 1. That is the first of the 3 center sts of scallop 1, counting from the right.
- For each fan: Sc in the 3 center sts of scallop 1. Work [ch 2, sc in the 3 center sts of next scallop] 4 times. (15 sc + 8 ch = 23 sts per fan)
- At each seam: Ch 2, then continue into the next fan.
Total: 6 x 23 + 5 x 2 = 148 sts. Turn.
The ch-2 bridges fill the dips between scallops and between fans. Work the chains at the same tension as your sc. Tight bridges make the header pucker, and loose bridges make it sag.
Checkpoint: Lay Row 1 flat without stretching it. It should measure 29.6 in (75.2 cm), because 148 sts ÷ 5 sts per in = 29.6 in.
Strands (Make 6)
Work each strand in segments, from top to bottom. Start the first segment at the point of a header fan, in the space between dc 9 and dc 10 of Round 1. That spot is the center of the unworked rosette top.
Odd strands (1, 3, 5):
– Segment A: Work [ch 5, Flower] 2 times, then ch 5. Sl st between dc 9 and dc 10 of a strand fan. Fasten off. Length: 4.5 in (11.4 cm)
– Segment B: Join the yarn at st 26 of that fan. Work [ch 5, Flower] 3 times, then ch 5. Sl st to the rosette top of the next fan. Fasten off. Length: 6.25 in (15.9 cm)
– Segment C: Join the yarn at st 26 of the lower fan. Ch 10 (2 in / 5.1 cm). Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.
Even strands (2, 4, 6): Work these the same way, but use 3 flowers in Segment A and 2 flowers in Segment B.
Every strand has the same total length, so the tassels hang level while the fans alternate in height. The strands hang 5 in (12.7 cm) apart, center to center.
Border
The border is the band. It runs only along the top edge, because that is the only edge the curtain has to finish. The short ends of the band are just the ends of its 3 rows.
Border gauge: 5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Band Row 2: Ch 1, then sc in each sc and each ch across. Turn. (148 sc)
Band Row 3 (ring loops): Ch 1. Sc in each st across, but in sts 1, 12, 37, 62, 87, 112, 137 and 148, work (sc, ch 5, sc) instead. (148 + 8 = 156 sc, plus 8 ch-5 loops)
Fasten off.
Why the math works:
– Each fan adds 23 sts, which is 4.6 in (11.7 cm).
– Each seam adds 2 ch, which is 0.4 in (1.0 cm).
– That makes 148 sts in total, or 29.6 in (75.2 cm).
– Rows 2 and 3 work one stitch into each stitch, so the width stays the same.
– The 8 extra sc in Row 3 sit in pairs at the base of the loops, so they don’t widen the band in any noticeable way.
– Each fan starts at stitch 25k − 24 (where k is the fan number), and stitch 12 of each fan is its center. That puts a ring loop above every header fan, plus one at each end.
– The loops are placed evenly from both ends: 1 and 148, 12 and 137, 37 and 112, 62 and 87.
Tassels (Make 6)
Wrap the yarn 40 times around the 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card. Tie the loops together at the top with a separate strand, then cut through the loops at the bottom.
Cap:
– Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
– Round 2: 2 sc in each st. (12)
– Rounds 3–5: Sc in each st. (12)
Fasten off.
Slip the cap over the tied top. Wrap yarn 8 times around the neck just under the cap and secure it. Use the Segment C tail to tie the tassel to the bottom of its strand. Trim the tassel to 5 in (12.7 cm).
Total length check: 0.5 + 3.5 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 6.25 + 3.5 + 2 + 5 = 28.75 in (73.0 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends.
- Lay the curtain flat on the mats, with the band along a straight edge.
- Pin the band to 29.6 in (75.2 cm).
- Pin each fan into an even wedge 4.6 in (11.7 cm) wide, with one pin in the center of each scallop.
- Straighten each strand and space the strands 5 in (12.7 cm) apart.
- Mist everything until it is damp but not soaked.
- Let it dry completely, then unpin.
- Steam the tassels lightly and comb them straight.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- All 18 fans have 51 sc along the edge and measure 4.6 in (11.7 cm) across.
- Band Row 1 has 148 sts. Row 3 has 156 sc and 8 loops.
- The band measures 29.6 in (75.2 cm).
- The odd and even strands alternate their fan heights.
- All 6 tassels hang level, 28.75 in (73.0 cm) below the band.
- No yarn ends show on either side.
Troubleshooting
- The fan cups: The puffs are too short or the Row 5 arches are too tight. Pull the puff loops higher, or try ch-6 arches.
- The fan ruffles: The puffs are too tall. Check them against the 3/4 in (1.9 cm) guide.
- The band puckers: The ch-2 bridges are too tight. Work them more loosely.
- The tassels hang unevenly: A segment is the wrong length. Recount the ch-5 sections and the flowers.
- The flowers twist: Turn each flower to face the front before you chain on.
Care
Hand wash in cool water and roll the curtain in a towel to remove excess water. Pin it flat and leave it to dry.

Final Notes
Each measurement depends on the one before it. A 4.6 in (11.7 cm) fan gives 23 band stitches. Six fans and five seams make 148 stitches, which is a 29.6 in (75.2 cm) band. The strand segments are 4.5 in (11.4 cm) and 6.25 in (15.9 cm), switched between odd and even strands so every tassel hangs 28.75 in (73.0 cm) below the band. If your test fan measures correctly, the rest of the measurements will work out.
Happy crocheting!
