For the Dough:
- 3 ½ cups (440g) all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp salt
For the Chocolate Filling:
- ½ cup (100g) brown sugar
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup (90g) chopped dark chocolate or mini chocolate chips
For the Optional Glaze:
- 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp milk or heavy cream
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tsp of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes (by hand or with a stand mixer) until smooth and elastic.
- Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Make the Chocolate Filling:
- In a bowl, mix brown sugar, cocoa powder, and softened butter until smooth.
- Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces or use chocolate chips.
- Shape and Fill the Rolls:
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it into a 16×12-inch rectangle.
- Spread the chocolate filling evenly, leaving a ½-inch border.
- Sprinkle chopped chocolate over the filling.
- Roll the dough tightly from the long side into a log.
- Cut into 12 even rolls and arrange in a greased baking dish.
- Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes.
- Bake:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake rolls for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before adding the glaze.
- Make the Glaze (Optional):
- Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Drizzle over warm rolls and enjoy!
Notes
- Make-ahead option: Prepare the rolls up to the second rise, then refrigerate overnight. Let come to room temperature before baking.
- Storage: Store at room temperature for up to 2 days, in the fridge for 5 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
- Reheating: Warm in the oven at 300°F (150°C) for 10 minutes or microwave for 15–20 seconds.
