The Shoreline Fan Lace Bed Runner is a long, airy bed scarf covered in overlapping lace fans. Every row of rounded shells sits between the shells of the row below, so the whole surface reads like soft fish scales or waves on sand. Each short end finishes in a row of scallops, with a full cream tassel hanging from every dip.
The sample is worked in one color, a warm cream cotton. A single neutral shade lets the lace texture carry the design, and it suits white bedding, light wood furniture, and calm, natural rooms.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished runner measures 19 in x 65.5 in (48.3 cm x 166.4 cm) without tassels, and each tassel adds 5 in (12.7 cm) at each end.
The runner is one piece. You start with a foundation chain across the center of the runner and work 43 fan rows toward one end. Then you turn the piece around and work 43 more rows into the other side of the chain, so both ends finish with matching scallops. A two-round edging goes around the whole piece, and the tassels go on last.

Materials
Yarn advice: Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton, or a cotton/acrylic blend, of about 200 m per 100 g. Cotton gives the fans crisp spokes and blocks well. Avoid fuzzy or brushed yarns, because they blur the gaps between the spokes.
- Cream: 800 g, about 1,600 m (1,750 yd)
- Body and border: about 725 g / 1,450 m
- Tassels: about 75 g / 150 m
All quantities include a margin of about 15% for your swatch, tension differences, and fuller tassels.

Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
- rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
Special stitches:
- Fan: Work (dc, ch 1) 6 times, then dc, all in the same stitch. This makes 7 dc and 6 ch-1 sps, for 13 sts. The 4th dc is the center dc.
- Half Fan (row start): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), then (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch. This makes 4 dc and 3 ch-1 sps, for 7 sts.
- Half Fan (row end): Work (dc, ch 1) 3 times, then dc, all in the same stitch, for 7 sts.
- Reverse sc: Working from left to right (or right to left if you crochet left-handed), insert the hook in the next st to the right, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops.
When you count stitches, every dc, every sc, and every ch-1 sp counts as 1 st.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge in pattern, after blocking: 1 fan repeat = 3 in (7.6 cm) wide, and 4 rows = 3 in (7.6 cm) tall. Each row is 0.75 in (1.9 cm) tall.
Make a test piece first. With the 6.0 mm hook, ch 26. Switch to the 5.0 mm hook and work Rows 1–3 below, then Rows 2–3 once more, for 5 rows. This gives 3 fan repeats (n = 3) and 43 sts per row (14 x 3 + 1). Block the swatch. It should measure 9 in (22.9 cm) wide, and any 4 consecutive rows should measure 3 in (7.6 cm).
If your swatch is too big, go down 0.5 mm. If it is too small, go up 0.5 mm. If the fans cup or ruffle while the width is correct, keep the hook and loosen or tighten the ch-1 sps a little.
Checkpoints:
- Foundation chain, relaxed: about 18 in (45.7 cm)
- After Row 3 of Half 1: 18 in (45.7 cm) wide
- After Half 1 (43 rows): 32.25 in (81.9 cm) long
- After Half 2: 64.5 in (163.8 cm) long, 18 in (45.7 cm) wide
- After the border: 19 in x 65.5 in (48.3 cm x 166.4 cm)

Pattern Formula
Each row has 14n + 1 sts, where n is the number of fan repeats. This runner uses n = 6, so every row has 85 sts. The foundation is 8n + 2 = 50 ch.
Half 1
With the 6.0 mm hook, ch 50 loosely. Switch to the 5.0 mm hook.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sk 3 ch, Fan in the next ch, sk 3 ch, sc in the next ch. Rep from * 5 more times. Turn.
Count: 6 Fans + 7 sc = 85 sts (6 x 13 + 7).
The sc land on chains 1, 9, 17, 25, 33, 41, and 49, counted from the hook end. The Fans land on chains 5, 13, 21, 29, 37, and 45.
Row 2 (WS): Work a Half Fan (row start) in the first sc. Sc in the center dc of the next Fan, Fan in the next sc. Rep from * 4 more times. Sc in the center dc of the last Fan, then work a Half Fan (row end) in the last sc. Turn.
Count: 2 Half Fans (14 sts) + 6 sc + 5 Fans (65 sts) = 85 sts.
Row 3 (RS): Ch 1. Sc in the first dc (the outer dc of the Half Fan). Fan in the next sc, sc in the center dc of the next Fan. Rep from * across. On the last repeat, work the final sc in the 3rd ch of the ch-4 that started Row 2, instead of in a center dc. Turn.
Count: 6 Fans + 7 sc = 85 sts.
These sc sit in the center of each fan below, and the new fans rise from the sc of the row below. That offset is what makes the shells overlap.
Rows 4–43: Rep Rows 2–3 twenty more times. Row 43 is a Row 3 type row, a RS row of 6 full Fans.
Count at Row 43: 85 sts. Fasten off.
Checkpoint: Half 1 measures 32.25 in (81.9 cm) from the foundation chain to the top of the fans, and 18 in (45.7 cm) wide.
Half 2
Turn the piece so the foundation chain is at the top and the RS of Row 1 faces you. You will work into the free loops on the underside of the chain.
Row 1 (RS): Join the yarn with a sl st in the free loop of the first ch, which is the one directly under the last sc of Half 1, Row 1. Ch 1 and sc in the same loop. Sk 3 free loops, Fan in the next free loop (the one under a Half 1 Fan), sk 3 free loops, sc in the next free loop (under a Half 1 sc). Rep from * 5 more times. Turn.
Count: 6 Fans + 7 sc = 85 sts.
Each new Fan sits back to back with a Half 1 Fan across the chain, so the center of the runner has a row of mirrored, medallion-like shapes.
Rows 2–43: Work Row 2 and Row 3 as for Half 1, and rep them 21 times in total. Row 43 is again a row of 6 full Fans.
Count at Row 43: 85 sts. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Checkpoint: The body has 86 rows and measures 64.5 in x 18 in (163.8 cm x 45.7 cm). Both ends have 6 scallops and 7 dips. The dips are the 7 sc of Row 43, including the 2 at the corners.
Border
Border gauge: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) along the straight long sides, with 3 sc per row end. Along the scalloped ends, work 1 sc into every stitch and space, so the edging follows the fan curves and the scallops stay open.
How the counts are defined:
- Each end has 85 sts. This includes the corner sc of Row 43 at each side, so the end count includes its own 2 corner stitches.
- Each long side has 258 sts, worked between the corner ch-1 sps. The long-side count includes no corner stitches.
- The 4 corner ch-1 sps are counted separately.
Rnd 1 (conversion round, RS): With the 5.0 mm hook and RS facing, join the yarn in the first sc of Row 43 of Half 2 and ch 1.
- End: Sc in the same st, then sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp across, with 1 sc in each of the 7 dip sc. That makes 85 sc worked 1 into each existing st, + 0 added.
- Corner: Ch 1.
- Long side: Work 3 sc evenly in each row end, 43 + 43 rows = 86 row ends, for 258 sc. That is 0 sts worked into existing stitches + 258 added along the row ends.
- Corner: Ch 1.
Work the second end and the second long side the same way. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Count: 85 + 258 + 85 + 258 = 686 sc, plus 4 ch-1 corner sps.
Rnd 2 (corded edge): Ch 1. Rev sc in each sc around, and 1 rev sc in each corner ch-1 sp. Join with a sl st and fasten off.
Count: 686 rev sc worked 1 into each existing sc + 4 added in the corner sps = 690 sts.
Per side, that is 85 on each end, 258 on each long side, and 4 at the corners.
Why the math works:
- At 0.75 in (1.9 cm) per row, 3 sc per row end gives exactly 4 sc per inch. That matches the border gauge, so the long sides neither ruffle nor pull in: 258 sc ÷ 4 = 64.5 in (163.8 cm).
- On the ends, 1 sc per existing stitch keeps the 85-st count of the last row. The edging traces the fans instead of straightening them.
- Two rounds add 0.25 in (0.6 cm) each, which gives the 0.5 in (1.3 cm) border depth on every edge. The final size is 18 + 1 = 19 in (48.3 cm) by 64.5 + 1 = 65.5 in (166.4 cm).
Tassels (make 14)
- Wrap the yarn 30 times around the 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card.
- Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) strand under the top of the wraps and tie it tightly. Leave both tails long.
- Cut through the bottom loops.
- Wrap a separate 24 in (61.0 cm) strand tightly around the bundle 1 in (2.5 cm) below the top, 8 to 10 times, and tie it off. Bury the tails inside the tassel.
- Steam the tassel lightly and trim the ends evenly to 5 in (12.7 cm).
Attach: At each end, there are 7 dips, matching the 7 sc of Row 43, including both corners. Use the top ties to pull one tassel through each dip, behind the border rev sc. Knot the tie on the WS and weave the tails into the sc underneath.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all remaining ends along stitch columns, not across the lace gaps.
- Soak the runner in cool water for 15 minutes, then gently press out the water. Do not wring it.
- Roll it in a towel to remove the extra moisture.
- Lay it flat on the mats, RS up. Keep the tassels off the mats.
- Pin the long sides straight to 65.5 in (166.4 cm), checking the width of 19 in (48.3 cm) every 12 in (30.5 cm).
- Pin the top of each scallop on the ends so all 6 fans on each end are the same height. Pin each dip straight down.
- Open the fan spokes with your fingertips so the ch-1 sps sit evenly.
- Let the runner dry completely, then unpin it. Mist the tassels and comb them straight.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Every row has 85 sts: 6 Fans + 7 sc, or 2 Half Fans + 6 sc + 5 Fans
- [ ] Each half has 43 rows, for 86 rows in total
- [ ] Each Fan has 7 dc and 6 ch-1 sps
- [ ] The width stays 18 in (45.7 cm) before the border
- [ ] Border Rnd 1 has 686 sc + 4 ch-1 sps, and Rnd 2 has 690 sts
- [ ] Both ends have 6 matching scallops and 7 tassels
- [ ] The final size is 19 in x 65.5 in (48.3 cm x 166.4 cm)
- [ ] The tassels are all 5 in (12.7 cm) long and securely knotted
Troubleshooting
The foundation edge is narrower than the fans. The chain is too tight. Redo it with the 6.0 mm hook, or with a 6.5 mm hook if needed.
The fans don’t line up over the sc below. You probably skipped the wrong number of stitches. Every sc must sit in a center dc, which is the 4th of 7, and every Fan must sit in a sc. Count 85 sts per row.
The edges lean or wave. The turning stitches are inconsistent. Always start a Row 2 type row with ch 4 and a Row 3 type row with ch 1, then sc.
The long border ruffles. Work 5 sc per 2 row ends instead of 6. Recount the side, and make the matching change on the other long side.
The scallops flatten. Rnd 1 was worked too tightly along the ends. Redo it with a looser tension, keeping 1 sc per st.
The tassels look thin. Use 36 wraps instead of 30. The yarn margin covers this.
Care
Hand wash cold, or machine wash on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag. Dry flat and re-pin the scallops if needed, then comb the tassels after washing.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. One fan repeat is 3 in (7.6 cm), so 6 repeats make 18 in (45.7 cm). Each row is 0.75 in (1.9 cm), so 86 rows make 64.5 in (163.8 cm). The 0.5 in (1.3 cm) border brings the runner to 19 in x 65.5 in (48.3 cm x 166.4 cm), and the 5 in (12.7 cm) tassels give a full length of 75.5 in (191.8 cm). Check your swatch, count 85 stitches per row, and the rest of the runner will follow.
Happy crocheting!
