This valance has a lacy beige header made from a row of half-circle fans, edged underneath with burgundy scallops. Seven strands hang from the points where the scallops meet. Each strand carries rosette beads, a two-tone tulip with lace leaves, and a pointed drop.
There are only two colors, deep burgundy and natural beige. Each tulip head is outlined in beige so it shows clearly against a bright window. The open fans and leaves let light through.
The pattern uses US terms. The finished valance is 36 in (91.4 cm) wide and 19 in (48.3 cm) long. The header is 3.75 in (9.5 cm) deep.
You make eight fans and join them as you go. Then you add a straight beige band and a burgundy scallop edge. Last, you assemble seven strands on slip-stitch cords and attach them at the fan junctions.

Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Make one fan and one tulip base first.
- Fan, after Row 2: 2 in (5.1 cm) across
- Fan, after Row 3: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across
- Fan, after Row 4: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) across and 2.25 in (5.7 cm) deep
- Tulip base, after Row 6: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) wide
- Tulip base, after Row 9: 2 in (5.1 cm) tall
- Tulip base, after Row 14: 3.1 in (7.9 cm) tall
If your fan is too big, use a 3.5 mm hook. If it is too small, use a 4.5 mm hook. An error of 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per fan adds up to 2 in (5.1 cm) across the valance.

Fans (Make 8, Beige)
Work each fan in turned rows. The straight edge is at the top.
Row 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc) and work 8 dc in the ring. Pull the ring closed and turn. (9 dc)
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2). Dc in next dc, ch 2 7 times. Dc in top of the turning ch and turn. (9 dc, 8 ch-2 sps)
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc). (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc 8 times. Turn. (41 dc = 1 + 8 x 5; 8 ch-2 sps)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first dc. Ch 4, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 4, sc in next single dc 8 times. (17 sc, 16 ch-4 loops) Fasten off.
Fans 2–8: Work Rows 1–3 as written. For Row 4, ch 1 and make a drop-loop join into the last sc of the previous fan. Then work Row 4 as written.
Checkpoint: The joined strip measures 36 in x 2.25 in (91.4 cm x 5.7 cm) and has 7 junctions.
Tulip Base (Make 7, Burgundy)
Turn at the end of every row. Each row starts with ch 1, which does not count as a stitch.
Row 1: Ch 5. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (4 sc)
Row 2: 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2, 2 sc in last st. (6 sc)
Rows 3–6: 2 sc in first st, sc across, 2 sc in last st. (Row 3: 8 sc; Row 4: 10; Row 5: 12; Row 6: 14)

Strand layout (measured from the junction to the top edge of each piece):
| Piece | Top edge at |
|---|---|
| Bead 1 | 3.0 in (7.6 cm) |
| Bead 2 | 4.65 in (11.8 cm) |
| Tulip | 6.05 in (15.4 cm) |
| Stem | 9.65 in (24.5 cm) |
| Leaf bases and Bead 3 | 12.35 in (31.4 cm) |
| Bead 4 | 14.25 in (36.2 cm) |
| Drop | 15.9 in (40.4 cm); tip at 18.0 in (45.7 cm) |
Joining
Fans: At each junction, the drop-loop join links one tip sc from each fan. No seam stitches are added.
Strands:
- Pin the pieces to the RS of the cord at the positions in the table.
- Sew the beads at their top and bottom.
- Sew the tulip at its base and behind the notch.
- Sew the drop through its top point and center so it covers the cord end.
- Sew each leaf base beside the cord at 12.35 in (31.4 cm), angled 30° outward. Tack it once at the middle. The leaves spread 4.0 in (10.2 cm), which fits within the 4.5 in (11.4 cm) spacing.
The bare 2.7 in (6.9 cm) of cord between the tulip and Bead 3 forms the stem.
Attach: After the border is done, use the cord tail to sew each cord over a junction, catching both tip sc. Sew snugly so the cord lies flat, but don’t pull hard enough to pucker the pieces.
Checkpoint: Each strand is 18 in (45.7 cm) long.
Border
Gauge: 4 sc per inch (2.54 cm).
Band Row 1 (beige): Work along the straight top edge of the joined fans, 18 sc per fan. On each half of a fan, that is 1 sc in the Row 4 end, 3 in the Row 3 end, 3 in the Row 2 end, and 2 in the Row 1 end. (18 x 8 = 144 sc)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st across. (144 dc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across. (144 sc) Fasten off.
Burgundy edging:
- Join at the top left corner and work 4 sc down the band end.
- Work (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in every ch-4 loop.
- At each junction, sl st into the joined tip sc.
- Work 4 sc up the far band end.
(4 + 640 + 4 = 648 sts, plus 7 sl sts)
Why it works: 36 in x 4 sc = 144 sc, and 144 / 8 = 18 sc per fan. Each junction stitch is a fan’s own row end, so nothing is added at the seams. Along the bottom, each fan has 16 loops x 5 sts = 80 sts.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends.
- Spray the valance until it is damp.
- Pin the band straight at 36 in (91.4 cm).
- Pin each fan curve 2.75 in (7.0 cm) deep, including the edging.
- Pin each shell open at its dc.
- Pin the strands straight and the tips into sharp points.
- Let it dry fully before unpinning.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Band is 36 in (91.4 cm) wide with 144 sts in each row
- 8 fans, each with 16 shells
- 7 strands, each 18 in (45.7 cm) long
- All tulips hang at the same height
- All outlines are complete
- Leaves don’t overlap the neighboring strands
- Ends are woven in securely
Troubleshooting
- Fans ruffle: Go down a hook size.
- Fans cup: Ch 5 for the Row 4 loops instead of ch 4.
- Band waves: Recount 18 sc per fan.
- Tulip tips are blunt: Work the sc2tog stitches and tip sc tightly.
- Strands twist: Sew the pieces to one face of the cord only, then block.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Dry flat and re-pin the points if needed.

Final Notes
Everything follows from the gauge of 4 sc per inch. Each fan is 4.5 in (11.4 cm), so eight fans make 36 in (91.4 cm). The 144-stitch band and the scallop edging bring the header to 3.75 in (9.5 cm) deep. The seven strands are 18 in (45.7 cm) long and hang 4.5 in (11.4 cm) apart, for a finished size of 36 in x 19 in (91.4 cm x 48.3 cm).
Happy crocheting!
