Evergreen Diamond Hanging Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

This three-tier hanging holder keeps spare toilet rolls in sight and within reach. It takes up no floor or shelf space. Three sturdy baskets hang one above the other from a single wooden ring, and each basket holds one standard roll lying on its side.

The colorwork is a simple tapestry diamond in cream on a deep forest green. Plain green bands frame the motif, and a rolled crab-stitch rim finishes each basket. The look is calm and slightly Nordic, and it suits wood, white ceramic and green plants.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. Each finished basket measures 7.5 in (19.1 cm) wide, 5 in (12.7 cm) deep and 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall. The whole holder hangs 19.5 in (49.5 cm) from the ring to the bottom of the lowest basket.

Each basket starts with a flat rectangular base worked in rows. You then work joined rounds up the walls with no increases, so the sides rise straight. The diamond chart repeats every 10 stitches. Two short straps connect each pair of baskets, and one long strap loops through the ring to form the hanger.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 7.5 in (19.1 cm) wide × 19.5 in (49.5 cm) long, plus the ring
  • Skill level: Intermediate (tapestry colorwork)
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
  • Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
  • Number of pieces: 8 (3 baskets, 4 connector straps, 1 hanger strap)
  • Layout: 1 column × 3 baskets, stacked vertically
  • Piece size: each basket is 7.5 × 5 × 4.5 in (19.1 × 12.7 × 11.4 cm)
  • Size before border: wall height 4 in (10.2 cm)
  • Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm), 2 rim rounds

Materials

Use a smooth, firm worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds its shape in a humid bathroom and gives clear color edges in tapestry work. Avoid fluffy or very splitty yarns, because the carried strand will show through.

  • Color A, forest green: 425 g / 720 m
  • Color B, cream: 80 g / 135 m
  • 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
  • Wooden ring, 2.5 in (6.4 cm) diameter
  • Stitch markers (at least 4)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors and a measuring tape
  • Wall hook rated for at least 2 lb (0.9 kg)

These quantities include a margin of about 12% for gauge swatching and the carried strand.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • BLO – back loop only
  • rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • Rnd – round
  • A / B – forest green / cream

Tapestry sc: Work sc over the unused color so it is carried inside each stitch. To change color, work the last sc before the change until 2 loops remain on the hook. Yarn over with the new color and pull through. Keep the carried strand relaxed along the top of the previous round.

Reverse sc: Work sc from left to right (for right-handers). Insert the hook into the next stitch to the right, pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 16 sts × 16 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in tapestry sc. That is 4 sts and 4 rnds per inch.

Make one complete basket first and measure it before you start the others. Check these points as you go:

  • Base after Row 20: 7.5 × 5 in (19.1 × 12.7 cm)
  • After Rnd 5: the wall is 1 in (2.5 cm) tall
  • After Rnd 14: the wall is 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall and the diamonds are complete
  • After Rnd 19: the wall is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall

If the base is too big, go down a half hook size. If it is too small, go up a half size. If the stitch width is right but the walls grow too fast, tension the carried strand less tightly and push each stitch down firmly. Take a roll with you and test the fit after Rnd 5.

Basket (Make 3)

Base

Worked in rows with A only.

Row 1: Ch 31. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (30 sts)

Rows 2–20: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (30 sts)

The base should measure 7.5 × 5 in (19.1 × 12.7 cm). Do not fasten off.

Base Edge

Rnd 1: Ch 1. Do not turn. Rotate the work and sc in each row end along the short side. (20 sts) Work 30 sc along the underside of the foundation chain, then 20 sc in the row ends of the other short side. Finish with 30 sc across Row 20. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (100 sts)

The foundation-chain side is the front. Mark the sts so you can count:

  • sts 1–20: right end
  • sts 21–50: front
  • sts 51–70: left end
  • sts 71–100: back

Walls

From here on, ch 1 at the start of each round does not count as a stitch. End every round with a sl st to the first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1. Sc BLO in each st around. (100 sts) This round makes the crisp fold between base and wall.

Rnds 3–5: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. (100 sts)

Diamond Chart (Rnds 6–14)

Join B at the start of Rnd 6 and carry the unused color through every stitch until the end of Rnd 14. Each line below shows one 10-st repeat. Work it 10 times per round. Repeats start at sts 1, 11, 21 and so on, so the front (sts 21–50) shows exactly 3 full diamonds.

  • Rnd 6: 3A, 3B, 4A
  • Rnd 7: 2A, 2B, 1A, 2B, 3A
  • Rnd 8: 1A, 2B, 3A, 2B, 2A
  • Rnd 9: 2B, 2A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 1A
  • Rnd 10: 1B, 2A, 3B, 2A, 1B, 1A
  • Rnd 11: 2B, 2A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 1A
  • Rnd 12: 1A, 2B, 3A, 2B, 2A
  • Rnd 13: 2A, 2B, 1A, 2B, 3A
  • Rnd 14: 3A, 3B, 4A

Each round in the chart has 100 sts. Every chart line adds up to 10 sts, and 10 repeats × 10 sts = 100. At the end of Rnd 14, fasten off B and weave the tail in on the inside.

Rnds 15–17: With A, ch 1. Sc in each st around. (100 sts)

The wall now measures 4 in (10.2 cm) from the fold. Do not fasten off; continue straight to the border.

Straps

All straps are worked in rows with A. Each strap is 5 sts (1.25 in / 3.2 cm) wide.

Connector strap (make 4): Ch 6. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (5 sts) Ch 1, turn, and sc across for Rows 2–10. You now have 10 rows, 2.5 in (6.4 cm) long. Fasten off and leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail.

Hanger strap (make 1): Ch 6. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (5 sts) Ch 1, turn, and sc across for Rows 2–56. You now have 56 rows, 14 in (35.6 cm) long. Fasten off and leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail.

Make All Pieces

  • Baskets: 3, each using A for the base, walls and rim and B for Rnds 6–14
  • Connector straps: 4, all in A
  • Hanger strap: 1, in A

Layout, from top to bottom:

      [ ring ]
       / \
   [ Basket 1 ]
    | |
   [ Basket 2 ]
    | |
   [ Basket 3 ]

Joining

Every strap attaches at the center of a basket’s short end, over sts 8–12 of that end. That is 5 wall sts for 5 strap sts, so the strap sits exactly one stitch to one stitch. For the right end, use sts 8–12 of the 1–20 section. For the left end, use sts 58–62.

Connectors: Lay a connector strap on the inside of the lower basket’s short end. Let 3 rows (0.75 in / 1.9 cm) overlap the top of the wall, just below the rim. Whipstitch all 4 edges of the overlap through the wall, one stitch to one stitch.

Place the other end of the strap on the outside of the upper basket’s short end. Let 3 rows overlap Rnds 2–4 and whipstitch the same way. That leaves 4 rows, or 1 in (2.5 cm), visible between the baskets. Join Basket 3 to Basket 2, then Basket 2 to Basket 1, using 2 connectors at each level.

Hanger: Pass the hanger strap through the ring and center it. Sew the two layers together for 2 rows just below the ring. Attach each end to the inside of Basket 1’s short ends with a 3-row overlap, as for the connectors. Each leg is about 5.5 in (14.0 cm) long, which puts the ring 4 in (10.2 cm) above Basket 1’s rim.

Tension: Make your whipstitches snug but not tight. A puckered wall will tilt the basket forward.

Size checkpoint: Hang the holder and measure it. It should be 4.5 + 1 + 4.5 + 1 + 4.5 + 4 = 19.5 in (49.5 cm) from the ring to the bottom of Basket 3.

Border

The border is the rim of each basket. Work it before joining. It keeps the same gauge as the walls: 4 sts per inch.

Rnd 18: Ch 1. Sc in each st: 20 along the right end, 30 along the front, 20 along the left end and 30 along the back. Join. (100 sts)

Rnd 19: Ch 1. Rev sc in each st around: 20 + 30 + 20 + 30. Join. (100 sts) Fasten off and weave in the end.

Why the math works: The rim has 30 sts on each long side, and 30 ÷ 4 = 7.5 in (19.1 cm), which matches the base length. Each short end has 20 sts, and 20 ÷ 4 = 5 in (12.7 cm), which matches the base depth. Rnd 1 picked up exactly one stitch per stitch or row end. No round adds stitches, so the walls and rim stay straight instead of flaring. The total of 100 sts also divides evenly into ten 10-st chart repeats.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all tails on the inside, running each one along the stitches of its own color.
  2. Mist each basket lightly with water until it is damp, not soaked.
  3. Stuff each basket firmly with a towel shaped to 7.5 × 5 in (19.1 × 12.7 cm).
  4. Square the corners by hand and press the base fold flat.
  5. Pin the straps flat so they are 1.25 in (3.2 cm) wide.
  6. Let everything dry fully, for at least 24 hours.
  7. Remove the towels, hang the holder and check that the baskets line up.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each basket measures 7.5 × 5 × 4.5 in (19.1 × 12.7 × 11.4 cm)
  • Every round has 100 sts
  • There are 3 full diamonds centered on each front
  • The carried yarn does not show on the right side
  • All straps are centered over sts 8–12 or 58–62
  • The visible gap between baskets is 1 in (2.5 cm)
  • The ring sits 4 in (10.2 cm) above Basket 1
  • All tails are woven in securely

Troubleshooting

  • Walls lean outward: Your sts are looser than the base. Go down a half hook size for the walls.
  • Cream shows green flecks: Hold the carried strand lower, behind the stitch.
  • Fabric puckers in the chart band: The carried strand is too tight. Spread your sts out on the hook before each color change.
  • Diamonds drift sideways: Use joined rounds rather than a spiral, and check that each round still has 100 sts.
  • Baskets tilt forward: Center the straps exactly and sew both strap edges through the wall.
  • Roll is tight: Your base is under 5 in (12.7 cm) deep. Add 1 row to the base and 4 sc to Rnd 1, then change the short-end pick-up from 20 to 22 sts.

Care

Hand wash cool, reshape while damp and dry flat. Do not tumble dry, because the cotton may shrink and distort the diamonds.

Crocheted toilet paper holder with three stacked green baskets featuring cream pattern, holding white rolls, hung from brass hook.

Final Notes

The measurements build on each other:

  • Gauge is 4 sts and 4 rnds per inch.
  • A base of 30 sts × 20 rows measures 7.5 × 5 in (19.1 × 12.7 cm).
  • Picking up 100 sts gives 10 chart repeats.
  • 16 wall rounds give 4 in (10.2 cm), and the 2-round rim brings the basket to 4.5 in (11.4 cm).
  • Connector straps leave a 1 in (2.5 cm) gap, and the hanger adds 4 in (10.2 cm).

Together, that makes a 19.5 in (49.5 cm) holder. Check each step of the chain and the finished piece will hang straight and hold its shape.

Happy crocheting!
