Rosewater Lace Flower Curtain Crochet Pattern

This curtain is made of strands of dusty rose lace flowers on cream beaded cords, hanging from a delicate mesh header. Light comes through every petal, so it looks soft and romantic over a kitchen window, a doorway, or a reading nook.

Each flower has five pointed petals with open veining and a cream ring at the center. Thin cream cords with small bobble “beads” link the flowers into 7 strands of 6. Each strand ends in a cream tassel. The colors are muted on purpose: dusty rose and warm cream.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain measures 36.2 in (91.9 cm) wide and 39.75 in (101.0 cm) long from the top of the header to the tips of the tassels.

You will work in this order: crochet all 42 flowers, crochet the header band, build each strand downward from the header by adding cords and flowers, then attach the tassels and block.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 36.2 in (91.9 cm) wide x 39.75 in (101.0 cm) long
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Fine (#2 / sport) mercerized cotton
  • Hook: 3.0 mm
  • Number of pieces: 42 flowers, 1 header band, 7 tassels
  • Layout: 7 strands across x 6 flowers down
  • Flower size: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip; 3.5 in (8.9 cm) hanging height (from the top petal tip to the notch at the bottom)
  • Drop below the header (before tassels): 35 in (88.9 cm)
  • Header depth: 1.75 in (4.4 cm)
  • Strand spacing: 5 in (12.7 cm) center to center

Materials

Use a smooth, mercerized cotton. It gives crisp stitch definition and holds the petal points after blocking. Avoid fuzzy or very stretchy yarns, because the strands hang under their own weight and will lengthen. The yardages below assume about 155 m per 50 g.

  • Color A, Dusty Rose: 200 g / 620 m (petals, about 4 g per flower)
  • Color B, Cream: 150 g / 465 m (flower centers, header, cords, tassels)

Both quantities include a safety margin of about 15-20% for your gauge swatch and tassel trimming.

Tools:
– 3.0 mm crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stiff card 3 in (7.6 cm) tall, for the tassels
– Rustproof pins and a blocking mat
– Spray bottle; optional light spray starch
– Measuring tape
– 7 or more curtain clip rings and a rod

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Special stitch – Node (bead): Ch 3. Yo, insert hook in the 3rd ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * to * 3 more times (5 loops on hook). Yo and draw through all 5 loops. This makes a small, round 4-dc cluster that sits on the cord like a bead, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) long.

Fan: (Dc, ch 2, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 2, dc) all in the same space.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Before you make the rest, crochet one complete flower and measure it. Every other measurement in the pattern depends on the flower size.

  • After Rnd 2 (cream center): 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across
  • After Rnd 4: about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across
  • After Rnd 6, blocked: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip and 3.5 in (8.9 cm) hanging height
  • Cord chain gauge: ch 12 = 1.75 in (4.4 cm). One connector (ch 6, node, ch 6) = 2 in (5.1 cm).
  • Header gauge: 20 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm). One sc row plus one dc row = 0.75 in (1.9 cm).

If your flower comes out larger than 4.75 in (12.1 cm), go down to a 2.75 mm hook. If it is smaller than 4.25 in (10.8 cm), go up to a 3.25 mm hook. Remeasure the center after Rnd 2 before you keep going. A center that is off by 0.25 in (0.6 cm) leads to a flower that is off by almost 1 in (2.5 cm).

Flower (Make 42)

Work in joined rounds with the right side always facing. Do not turn.

Rnd 1 (Color B): Ch 6 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 14 dc in the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3. (15 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1. Sc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 sc in the next dc. Repeat from * to * 5 times in total. Join to the first sc. (20 sc) Fasten off Color B. The cream center is now a firm ring with an open hole in the middle.

Rnd 3 (Color A): Join Color A in any sc. Ch 1 and sc in the same st. Ch 5, sk 3 sc, sc in the next sc. Repeat from * to * 3 times. Ch 5, sk the last 3 sc, and join to the first sc. (5 sc, 5 ch-5 loops) Check: 5 repeats x 4 sts = 20 sts covered.

Rnd 4: Sl st into the first ch-5 loop. Ch 3 (counts as the first dc). In the same loop work (ch 2, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 2, dc), then sc in the next sc. Fan in the next ch-5 loop, sc in the next sc. Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to the top of the beginning ch-3. (20 dc, 5 sc, 10 ch-2 sps, 5 ch-3 sps) Each fan is the frame of one petal. Its ch-3 at the center becomes the petal tip.

Rnd 5 (petals): Sl st into the next ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same sp. Continue: ch 1; (2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr) in the next ch-3 sp; ch 1; (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next ch-2 sp; sc in the next sc.
In the next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 1, dc); ch 1; (2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr) in the next ch-3 sp; ch 1; (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next ch-2 sp; sc in the next sc. Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to the top of the beginning ch-3.
(Per petal: 6 dc, 4 tr, 4 ch-1 sps, 1 ch-3 tip, plus 1 sc between petals. Round total: 30 dc, 20 tr, 5 sc, 20 ch-1 sps, 5 ch-3 tips.)
The trebles lift each petal into a point. The ch-1 gaps form the open vein lines that run toward each tip.

Rnd 6 (outline): Ch 1. Work 1 sc in each dc, 1 sc in each tr, and 1 sc in each ch-1 sp. Work (sc, ch 3, sc) in each ch-3 tip. Work a sl st in each sc between petals. Join to the first sc and fasten off.
(Per petal: 7 sc up one side, (sc, ch 3, sc) at the tip, 7 sc down the other side = 16 sc + 1 ch-3 picot. Round total: 80 sc, 5 picots, 5 sl sts.)

Weave in all ends on the wrong side, hiding them inside the cream center. Lay the flower so one petal points straight up. The tip picot is the ch-3 at the top of that petal. The bottom notch is the sl st directly opposite it, between the two lower petals.

Make All Pieces

  • Flowers: 42 in total. Each uses about 4 g of Color A and 1 g of Color B.
  • Header: 1, in Color B
  • Tassels: 7, in Color B

Layout: 7 strands across, with 5 in (12.7 cm) between strand centers. F = flower, T = tassel. Cords link the header, every flower, and each tassel vertically.

[====== HEADER, 181 sts ======]
 F F F F F F F
 F F F F F F F
 F F F F F F F
 F F F F F F F
 F F F F F F F
 F F F F F F F
 T T T T T T T

Block all 42 flowers before you join them (see Final Blocking). Joining blocked flowers keeps the strands hanging evenly.

Header Band (Border)

In this curtain the header plays the role of the border. Its stitch count sets the curtain width and the strand positions. Work it in rows with Color B. Row 1 is the top edge, and Row 5 is the bottom edge where the strands attach.

Border gauge: 20 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm), so 5 sts = 1 in (2.5 cm).

Row 1: Ch 182. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (181 sc)

Row 2 (mesh): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Sk the next sc and dc in the next sc. Ch 1, sk 1 sc, dc in the next sc. Repeat from * to * across, ending with a dc in the last sc. Turn. (91 dc + 90 ch-1 sps = 181 sts) The dc land on stitches 1, 3, 5, and so on up to 181, so an odd count is required.

Row 3: Ch 1. Sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp across, ending with an sc in the 3rd ch of the turning ch-4. Turn. (91 + 90 = 181 sc)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2. (91 dc + 90 ch-1 sps = 181 sts)

Row 5: Repeat Row 3. (181 sc) Fasten off.

Size check: 181 sts ÷ 5 = 36.2 in (91.9 cm) wide. The depth is 3 sc rows at 0.25 in (0.6 cm) plus 2 mesh rows at 0.5 in (1.3 cm), for 1.75 in (4.4 cm).

Why the math works: 181 = 15 margin sts + 1 strand st + 6 x (24 gap sts + 1 strand st) + 15 margin sts. Count across Row 5 and place a marker in each of sts 16, 41, 66, 91, 116, 141, and 166. The markers are exactly 25 sts, or 5 in (12.7 cm), apart. There are 15 sts, or 3 in (7.6 cm), outside each outer marker. Each outer strand’s flowers reach 2.25 in (5.7 cm) to the side, so they stay 0.75 in (1.9 cm) inside the header’s edges. Neighboring flowers have a 0.5 in (1.3 cm) gap between their petal tips (5 in pitch minus 4.5 in flower width).

Joining: Building the Strands

Each strand is built from the header downward. Every connector follows the same logic: it starts at a fixed stitch on one piece and ends at a fixed stitch on the next piece.

Top cord: With the right side of the header facing, join Color B with a sl st in marked st 16 of Row 5. Ch 6, work a node, then ch 6. Sl st into the tip picot of the first flower, inserting the hook under the ch-3. Fasten off. (2 in / 5.1 cm)

Connector: Join Color B with a sl st in the bottom notch sl st of the same flower. Ch 6, work a node, then ch 6, and sl st into the tip picot of the next flower. Fasten off. (2 in / 5.1 cm) Repeat until the strand holds 6 flowers.

Bottom cord: Join Color B at the bottom notch of flower 6. Ch 6, work a node, and ch 6. Fasten off, leaving an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail for attaching the tassel.

Repeat for the other markers: 41, 66, 91, 116, 141, and 166.

Tension advice: Keep the chains even and slightly relaxed. Tight chains pucker the petal tips, and loose chains make the strands hang at different lengths. Hold finished strands side by side and compare cords as you go. Every node should line up across the curtain.

Size checkpoint: Each strand measures 2 in top cord + (6 x 3.5 in flowers) + (5 x 2 in connectors) + 2 in bottom cord = 2 + 21 + 10 + 2 = 35 in (88.9 cm) below the header.

Tassels (Make 7)

Wrap Color B 20 times around the 3 in (7.6 cm) card. Slide a 6 in (15.2 cm) strand under the top and tie it tightly. Cut the loops at the bottom. Wrap another strand around the tassel 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top, knot it, and bury the ends inside. Trim to 3 in (7.6 cm). Use the bottom-cord tail to tie on one tassel per strand.

Final length: 1.75 in header + 35 in strand + 3 in tassel = 39.75 in (101.0 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Wet each flower, or spray it until it is evenly damp.
  2. Pin the center ring flat, then pin each petal tip out. Each tip should sit 2.25 in (5.7 cm) from the center.
  3. Open the ch-1 vein gaps gently with a pin so they stay visible.
  4. If you want crisper points, mist lightly with starch.
  5. Pin the header flat to 36.2 in x 1.75 in (91.9 cm x 4.4 cm), keeping the mesh straight.
  6. Let everything dry completely before assembly.
  7. After assembly, hang the curtain and let it settle for a day. Then spray the cords lightly and smooth them straight by hand.

Troubleshooting

The petals cup or curl. Rnd 5 is too tight. Go up a hook size for the trebles only, or block more firmly.

The petals ruffle. Check that you have exactly 4 tr per petal and 7 sc on each side in Rnd 6.

The center hole closes up. Your starting ring is too tight. Chain loosely, or work Rnd 1 over a ch-7 ring.

A flower hangs crooked. The cord is attached to the wrong notch. The bottom notch must be directly opposite the tip picot.

The strands are different lengths. Count the chains in every cord, and re-block any flower that is taller than 3.5 in (8.9 cm).

The header curves. The foundation chain is tight. Redo it with a hook one size larger.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, roll the curtain in a towel, and lay the pieces flat to dry, pinning the petal points. Do not tumble dry or hang it while it is wet.

Final Notes

The whole curtain depends on one measurement chain. A 1.25 in (3.2 cm) center gives a 4.5 in (11.4 cm) flower that hangs 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall. Six flowers, seven 2 in (5.1 cm) cords, and a 3 in (7.6 cm) tassel add up to the 35 in (88.9 cm) strand and a 39.75 in (101.0 cm) total length. Seven strands spaced 25 sts apart on a 181-st header give the 36.2 in (91.9 cm) width. Check each link as you go, and the finished curtain will hang straight and even.

Happy crocheting!
