This owl bag holder is a useful kitchen helper with a lot of character. It hangs flat against the wall, holds a stash of plastic grocery bags inside its body, and lets you pull them out one at a time through a ribbed opening at the bottom.
The colors are warm chocolate brown for the body, cream for the shell-stitch belly, eye disks and feather edges, and a touch of mustard gold for the beak. Layered feather wings, round eyes and small two-tone ear tufts give it a cozy farmhouse style that suits open shelving, pantry doors and laundry rooms.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished owl is about 9 in (22.9 cm) wide and 11.5 in (29.2 cm) tall, not counting the ear tufts or the hanging strap.
The construction is simple. You crochet the brown body from the top down as a tube, shape it with side increases and bottom decreases, and finish the bottom with a ribbed cuff. You make the belly, eyes, beak and wing feathers separately and sew them on. The top is seamed only at the corners, which leaves a slot in the center for loading bags.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 9 in (22.9 cm) wide x 11.5 in (29.2 cm) tall, laid flat
- Skill level: Easy-Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4)
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 1 finished item made from 1 body, 1 belly panel, 2 eyes, 1 beak, 8 wing feathers and 1 strap
- Layout: a single standalone owl; no joining of multiple pieces
- Body size before cuff: 9 in (22.9 cm) wide x 10 in (25.4 cm) tall
- Bottom cuff (border) depth: 1.5 in (3.8 cm)
Materials
Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton keeps its shape on the wall, shows the shell texture clearly and stands up to washing. Acrylic also works, but it stretches more under a full load of bags.
- Chocolate brown (MC): 120 g / 222 m
- Cream (CC1): 40 g / 74 m
- Mustard gold (CC2): 5 g / 9 m
These quantities include a comfortable margin for gauge swatches and small differences in tension.
For a softer look, swap the brown for lavender and keep the cream and gold. The stitch counts stay the same.

Gauge and Checkpoints
Body gauge: 16 sc and 18 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc worked in the round.
Belly gauge: 5 shell repeats (31 sts) = 6.25 in (15.9 cm) wide; 10 rows = 6 in (15.2 cm) tall.
Test the body first. Work Rnds 1–6 and lay the tube flat. It should measure 8 in (20.3 cm) wide. The 64 sts split into two layers of 32, and 32 ÷ 4 sts per inch = 8 in.
Checkpoints:
- After Rnd 6: 8 in (20.3 cm) flat width
- After Rnd 12: 9 in (22.9 cm) flat width
- After Rnd 36: 8 in (20.3 cm) total length
- After Rnd 45: 10 in (25.4 cm) total length
- After the cuff: 11.5 in (29.2 cm) total length
If your tube is too wide, go down half a hook size. If it is too narrow, go up half a hook size. Don’t add or remove stitches, because the cuff and appliqué sizes are based on these exact counts.

Body (MC)
Work the body top-down in continuous rnds. Place a marker in the first st of each rnd and move it up as you go. The rnd begins at one side fold.
Rnd 1: Ch 64 and join with a sl st to the first ch, taking care not to twist. Ch 1, sc in each ch around. (64 sts)
Rnds 2–6: Sc in each st around. (64 sts)
Lay the tube flat with the marker at the left fold. Check: 32 sts per layer, 8 in (20.3 cm) wide.
Rnd 7: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 30 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice. (68 sts)
The increases sit at the two side folds, so the owl widens at the shoulders instead of bulging at the front.
Rnds 8–11: Sc in each st around. (68 sts)
Rnd 12: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 32 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice. (72 sts)
Check: 36 sts per layer, and 36 ÷ 4 = 9 in (22.9 cm) flat width.
Rnds 13–38: Sc in each st around. (72 sts)
At Rnd 36, measure 8 in (20.3 cm) from the foundation edge.
Rnd 39: [Sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (64 sts)
Rnd 40: [Sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (56 sts)
Rnd 41: [Sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (48 sts)
Rnd 42: [Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (40 sts)
Rnd 43: [Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog] 8 times. (32 sts)
Rnds 44–45: Sc in each st around. (32 sts)
Sl st in the next st. Don’t fasten off, because you’ll work the cuff from here in the Border section. Check: 10 in (25.4 cm) tall, 9 in (22.9 cm) at the widest point, and 16 sts per layer at the bottom.
Belly Panel (CC1)
The belly is a flat rectangle of classic shell stitch. You work it from the bottom up so the last row ends in full shells, which gives a scalloped top edge just under the eyes.
Foundation: Ch 32.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, shell in next ch, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * 4 more times. Turn. (5 shells + 6 sc = 31 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first sc, *skip 2 dc, sc in center dc of shell, skip 2 dc, shell in next sc; rep from * 3 more times, skip 2 dc, sc in center dc of last shell, skip 2 dc, 3 dc in last sc. Turn. (3 dc + 4 shells + 5 sc + 3 dc = 31 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, *skip 2 dc, shell in next sc, skip 2 dc, sc in next st (the center dc of the next half or full shell, or the top of the turning ch at the end); rep from * 4 more times. Turn. (5 shells + 6 sc = 31 sts)
Rows 4–9: Rep Rows 2 and 3 three more times. (31 sts each row)
Fasten off, leaving a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail for sewing. Check: 6.25 in (15.9 cm) wide x 5.4 in (13.7 cm) tall.
Because each row of shells is offset by half a repeat, the fans overlap like layered breast feathers. That creates the raised, scaled texture.
Eyes (Make 2)
Rnd 1 (CC1): MR, ch 2 (does not count), 12 dc in ring. Sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count), 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
Fasten off CC1.
Rnd 3 (MC): Join MC in any st, sl st in each st around. (24 sl sts)
Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. Each eye is 2.5 in (6.4 cm) across. Push a 15 mm safety eye through the center of the MR and lock the washer on the back.
Beak (CC2)
Rnd 1: MR, 4 sc in ring. (4 sts)
Rnd 2: [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] twice. (6 sts)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice. (8 sts)
Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. (8 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Flatten the open end. The beak is 1 in (2.5 cm) long.
Wing Feathers (Make 8)
Each wing uses 4 fan-shaped feathers, stacked so that each one overlaps the one below it.
Row 1 (MC): MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ring. Pull the ring snug into a half circle. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in first st, 2 dc in each remaining st. Fasten off MC. (14 sts)
Row 3 (CC1): Join CC1 in first st, ch 1, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 7 times. (21 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Each feather is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide x 1.5 in (3.8 cm) tall, with a cream edge along the curve.
Assembly
Top seam: Flatten the body with the side folds at the edges. With MC, sc through both layers of the foundation edge for 9 sts at the right corner. Fasten off. Repeat at the left corner. (9 + 14 + 9 = 32 sts per layer)
The center 14 sts stay open, which gives a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) slot for loading bags. The seamed corners form the ear points.
Belly: Pin the belly in the center of the front, with its top edge 3.6 in (9.1 cm) below the top seam. The bottom edge lands 9 in (22.9 cm) below the top, where the body begins to taper. Ease the bottom corners around the curve. Whipstitch all four sides through the front layer only.
Eyes: Pin the eyes side by side, touching at the center, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top seam. Whipstitch around the brown outline through the front layer only.
Beak: Sew the flattened end between the eyes, point down, so the tip overlaps the belly’s scalloped top edge.
Wings: Place the first feather curved edge down at the side fold, 3.5 in (8.9 cm) below the top seam, and sew only its straight top edge. Place the next feather 1 in (2.5 cm) lower so it covers the seam of the first one. Repeat until all 4 feathers are on. Each wing is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) long and overlaps the belly edge by about 0.5 in (1.3 cm).
Ear tufts: For each ear, cut 3 MC and 3 CC1 strands, each 5 in (12.7 cm) long. Fold them in half, pull the loop through the corner tip, and pull the ends through the loop. Trim to 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
Strap (MC): Ch 51, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (50 sts)
The strap is 12.5 in (31.8 cm) long. Sew one end inside each top corner, just behind the ear tufts. Use several passes of yarn, because this seam carries the full weight of the bags.
Border: Ribbed Bottom Cuff (MC)
Border gauge: 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm) in post-stitch ribbing; each rnd is 0.5 in (1.3 cm) tall.
Continue from the last sl st of Rnd 45.
Rnd 46: Ch 2 (does not count), dc in each st around. Sl st to first dc. (32 sts; 16 per side)
Rnd 47: Ch 2 (does not count), [fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st] 16 times. Sl st to first st. (32 sts; 16 per side)
Rnd 48: Ch 2 (does not count), [fpdc around the fpdc, bpdc around the bpdc] 16 times. Sl st to first st. (32 sts; 16 per side)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. For extra grip, thread round elastic through the back of Rnd 47 and knot it into a relaxed 7 in (17.8 cm) loop.
Why the math works: The cuff starts with exactly the 32 sts of Rnd 45, worked one into each stitch, so it neither ruffles nor pulls in. Thirty-two is an even number, so the front and back post stitches alternate evenly into 16 ribs, 8 on each face. Laid flat, each side is 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm). Three rnds at 0.5 in (1.3 cm) each add 1.5 in (3.8 cm), which takes the total height from 10 in (25.4 cm) to 11.5 in (29.2 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all remaining tails through stitches of the same color.
- Lightly mist the whole owl with water.
- Slide a piece of folded cardboard 9 in (22.9 cm) wide inside the body to keep the layers apart.
- Pin the outline to 9 in (22.9 cm) wide and 11.5 in (29.2 cm) tall on a blocking mat.
- Pin the belly’s scalloped top edge so each shell sits evenly.
- Gently curve each wing feather down so the cream edges lie flat.
- Fluff the ear tufts with your fingers.
- Let it dry completely, then remove the cardboard.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- The body is 9 in (22.9 cm) wide and 11.5 in (29.2 cm) tall.
- The top slot is open across 14 sts, 3.5 in (8.9 cm).
- The belly has 5 shells across and a scalloped top edge.
- The eyes are level and touch at the center, and the safety eyes are locked.
- The beak tip points down and is centered.
- Each wing has 4 feathers, stepped evenly 1 in (2.5 cm) apart.
- The cuff shows 8 clean ribs on each face.
- The strap is sewn securely at both corners and holds weight.
Troubleshooting
The body twists into a spiral: This is normal in continuous sc. Steam it lightly and line up the side folds again before seaming the top.
The belly is wider than 6.25 in (15.9 cm): Your shells are loose. Rework the panel with a 4 mm hook.
The belly puckers when sewn: You may have stitched through both layers or pulled too tight. Sew through the front layer only, with relaxed stitches.
The eyes look uneven: Pin both eyes and check them from across the room before sewing. Even a small tilt is noticeable.
The cuff flares: Check that Rnd 45 has exactly 32 sts. If it still opens too wide, add the optional elastic.
Bags come out in bunches: Tuck each bag into the next one before loading, or add the elastic.
The wings flip up: Tack the bottom center of each lowest feather down with one hidden stitch.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and lay flat to dry. Reshape the cuff and wings while the owl is still damp.

Final Notes
Every measurement comes from the gauge of 16 sc per 4 in (10.2 cm). The 64 sts of Rnd 1 give an 8 in (20.3 cm) top. Side increases bring the body to 72 sts and 9 in (22.9 cm). Decreases taper it back to 32 sts, and 45 rnds make it 10 in (25.4 cm) tall. The 32-st ribbed cuff adds 1.5 in (3.8 cm), for a final height of 11.5 in (29.2 cm). The 6.25 in (15.9 cm) belly, 2.5 in (6.4 cm) eyes and 3 in (7.6 cm) feathers are sized to fit neatly inside that outline.
Hang your owl near the pantry, fill it up, and enjoy a tidier kitchen. Happy crocheting!
