The Rose Trellis Bag Holder is a hanging grocery-bag dispenser with a cottage-kitchen feel. The body is an airy net of chain loops in pale cream and soft sage. Because the two colors alternate every round, the loops overlap and read as interlocking rings, like a garden trellis.
A dusty-pink band finishes the top, a pink tab wraps around a wooden ring for hanging, and a round pink-rimmed opening near the bottom lets you pull out one bag at a time. Two rolled roses climb a sage stem with pointed leaves across the front.
The finished holder measures 7 in (17.8 cm) wide flat and about 19.7 in (50.0 cm) long, not counting the ring. The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.
You crochet it in one piece from the bottom up. A small solid disc forms the rounded base. Next come 28 rounds of net, with the dispenser opening built into Round 10, and then a 7-round solid band. The hanging tab, opening rim and appliqués are added last.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 7 in (17.8 cm) wide flat × 19.7 in (50.0 cm) long
- Circumference: 14 in (35.6 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hooks: 5.0 mm (H-8) for the body, 4.0 mm (G-6) for the appliqués
- Number of pieces: 1 body plus 7 small appliqués (2 roses, 4 leaves, 1 stem)
- Layout: One seamless tube with a closed base
- Body before band: 18.1 in (46.0 cm) long (base disc 1.3 in / 3.3 cm + net 16.8 in / 42.7 cm)
- Top band depth: 1.6 in (4.1 cm)
Materials
Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton keeps the net loops crisp and stands up to being stuffed with bags. Each 50 g ball should give roughly 78 m.
- Color A, Cream: 50 g (78 m), for the net
- Color B, Sage Green: 60 g (94 m), for the base, the net, the leaves and the stem
- Color C, Dusty Pink: 30 g (47 m), for the band, tab, rim and roses
These quantities include a margin of about 15%.
Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) and 4.0 mm (G-6) hooks
– One wooden ring, 2 in (5.1 cm) across
– 2 locking stitch markers
– Tapestry needle
– Rustproof pins
– Measuring tape
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- sp – space
- rnd – round
- rep – repeat
Special stitch – Net loop: ch 6, sc in the next ch-6 loop.
Special stitch – Closing loop: ch 2, tr in the closing tr of the previous round (or in the first sc on Rnd 7). This counts as one ch-6 loop and leaves your hook at the center of the loop, ready for the next round.
Color change: Work the closing tr until 2 loops remain on the hook. Drop the old color, yarn over with the new color and pull it through. Carry the unused color loosely up the inside of the tube, and twist the two strands once at each change.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Solid gauge (5.0 mm hook): 16 sc and 18 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Net gauge (5.0 mm hook): 16 net loops = 14 in (35.6 cm) around, and 5 net rnds = 3 in (7.6 cm), measured lightly stretched.
Work the base disc and the first 5 net rounds as your test piece. Then check:
- After Rnd 6: the disc measures about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across.
- After Rnd 12: the tube measures 7 in (17.8 cm) wide flat.
- After Rnd 34: the net section measures 16.8 in (42.7 cm) long.
- After Rnd 41: the total length is 19.7 in (50.0 cm).
If your tube is too wide, change to a 4.5 mm hook or chain 5 for each loop. If it is too narrow, change to a 5.5 mm hook. Don’t change the number of loops, because the band math depends on having 16.

Body
Place a marker at the start of each round. That spot is the center back. The opening will fall on the front.
Base Disc
With Color B and the 5.0 mm hook:
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, work 6 sc in the ring, then sl st to the first sc. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st, sl st to the first sc. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, rep 6 times, sl st to the first sc. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep 6 times, sl st to the first sc. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep 6 times, sl st to the first sc. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep 6 times. On the final sl st, change to Color A. (36 sts)
Net Section
Rnd 7 (A): Sc in the same st as the join. Ch 6, skip 2 sts, sc in next st 11 times. Ch 2, skip 2 sts, then tr in the first sc, changing to B. (12 loops)
Rnd 8 (B, increase): Work [ch 6, sc in next loop] 3 times, then ch 6 and sc in the same loop 3 times. Next, [ch 6, sc in next loop] 3 times. Work the closing loop, changing to A. (16 loops)
The extra anchor in every third loop flares the tube outward from the disc and gives the bottom its rounded shape.
Rnd 9 (A): Work 15 net loops, then the closing loop, changing to B. (16 loops)
Rnd 10 (B, opening round): Work 6 net loops. Ch 17, skip the next 2 loops and sc in the following loop. Work 6 more net loops, then the closing loop, changing to A. (13 loops + 1 ch-17 sp)
The ch-17 forms the top edge of the dispenser opening. Rnd 9 forms the bottom edge.
Rnd 11 (A): Work 6 net loops. Ch 6, sc in the 3rd ch of the ch-17. Ch 6, sc in the 9th ch. Ch 6, sc in the 15th ch. Ch 6, sc in the next loop. Work 5 more net loops, then the closing loop, changing to B. (16 loops)
That gives 6 + 4 + 5 + 1 = 16 loops. The three anchors in the chain bring the round back to its full count.
Rnds 12–34: Work 15 net loops and the closing loop each round, alternating colors: B on even rounds and A on odd rounds. Change to Color C at the end of Rnd 34. (16 loops each round)
Rnd 34 is worked in B. Checkpoint: the net section is now 16.8 in (42.7 cm) long and the tube is 7 in (17.8 cm) wide flat.
Border: Top Band, Hanging Tab and Opening Rim
Border gauge: 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), worked with the 5.0 mm hook.
Top Band
Rnd 35 (C, conversion): Ch 1. Work 4 sc in the next loop, then 3 sc in the next loop, rep 8 times. Sl st to the first sc. (48 sc worked 3 per loop + 8 extra sc = 56 sc)
Rnds 36–41: Ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to the first sc. (56 sc)
Why the math works: At 4 sc per inch, 56 sc equals 14 in (35.6 cm). That matches the net’s 14 in circumference exactly, so the band neither flares nor gathers. Seven rounds at 18 rnds per 4 in gives a band depth of 1.6 in (4.1 cm).
Do not fasten off.
Hanging Tab
Row 1: Sc in the next 6 sts, ch 1, turn. (6 sc)
Rows 2–14: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. (6 sc)
Fasten off and leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. The tab is 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide.
If the tab is not centered on the back, slide it by starting Row 1 a few sts earlier. Wrap the last 1.25 in (3.2 cm) of the tab over the wooden ring to the inside, then whipstitch Row 14 to the inside of the band.
Opening Rim
Join Color C in the sc beside the ch-17 on the right edge of the opening.
Rnd 1: Along the bottom edge, work 4 sc in the open part of the first Rnd 9 loop. Work 5 sc in each of the next 2 skipped loops, then 4 sc in the open part of the last loop. (18 sc)
Next, work across the underside of the ch-17. Work 1 sc in each ch, with 2 sc in the 9th ch. (18 sc)
Sl st to the first sc. (18 + 18 = 36 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog, rep 4 times, sl st to the first sc. (32 sc)
Rnd 3: Sl st in each st around. (32 sl sts)
Fasten off. The rim is 0.5 in (1.3 cm) deep. The finished opening is about 2.5 in (6.4 cm) across, and about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) including the rim. The decreases in Rnd 2 pull the rim into a smooth circle that faces the hole.
Appliqués
Use the 4.0 mm hook for all appliqués.
Large Rose (Color C)
Foundation: Ch 39.
Row 1: Work (dc, ch 2, dc) in the 6th ch from the hook. Skip 2 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch, rep 11 times, ch 1, turn. (12 V-sts)
Row 2: Work (sc, 4 dc, sc) in the next ch-2 sp 5 times. Then (sc, 6 dc, sc) in the next ch-2 sp 7 times. (12 petals)
Fasten off and leave a 15 in (38.1 cm) tail. Roll the strip up, starting with the small petals in the center, and stitch through the base as you go. The rose measures about 2.5 in (6.4 cm) across.
Small Rose (Color C)
Foundation: Ch 27.
Row 1: Work (dc, ch 2, dc) in the 6th ch from the hook. Skip 2 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch, rep 7 times, ch 1, turn. (8 V-sts)
Row 2: Work (sc, 4 dc, sc) in the next ch-2 sp 8 times. (8 petals)
Roll and stitch the same way. The rose measures about 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across.
Leaves (Color B, make 4)
Foundation: Ch 9.
Rnd 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, then 3 sc in the last ch. Working along the other side of the foundation chain, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch. Ch 3 for the tip, then sl st to the first sc. (17 sts + ch-3 tip)
For the vein, surface sl st down the center of the leaf. Each leaf measures 1.75 in (4.4 cm) long.
Stem (Color B)
Ch 41. Sl st in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (40 sl sts)
The stem measures about 7 in (17.8 cm).
Placement
Pin the large rose on the front, 3 in (7.6 cm) below the band and 1 in (2.5 cm) right of center. Curve the stem down and to the left from under the large rose. Then place the small rose 4 in (10.2 cm) below the large one. Let the end of the stem curve right, finishing 1.5 in (3.8 cm) above the rim. Add two leaves near each rose.
Stitch everything through the net anchors only, using the yarn tails. Keep a hand inside the tube so you don’t sew the front to the back.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along the inside of the band or along the solid stitches.
- Mist the tube until it is damp but not soaked.
- Slide a rolled towel inside so the tube is 7 in (17.8 cm) wide flat.
- Pat the net loops into even rings, and lengthen the tube to 19.7 in (50.0 cm).
- Shape the opening rim into a circle, and press the rose petals open with your fingers.
- Let it dry completely before you hang it.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every round has 16 loops, and Rnd 10 has 13 loops + 1 ch-17 sp.
- Colors alternate cleanly, and the carried strands lie flat inside.
- The band has 56 sc and measures 14 in (35.6 cm) around.
- The rim has 32 sts and lies flat, without ruffles.
- The tab is centered on the back and sewn securely.
- The appliqués are attached to the front layer only.
- The finished size is 7 × 19.7 in (17.8 × 50.0 cm).
Troubleshooting
The tube spirals. Net rounds lean slightly by nature. Blocking over a towel roll straightens them.
The band ruffles. Your sc gauge is loose. Change to a 4.5 mm hook for Rnds 35–41.
The band puckers the net. Your sc gauge is tight. Change to a 5.5 mm hook for the band.
The opening is oval. Check that you placed 2 sc in the center ch, and that Rnd 2 has evenly spaced decreases.
The bottom is pointed. You probably skipped the increases in Rnd 8. Recount to 16 loops.
Bags slip out of the top. Tighten the band by working Rnd 41 as sl sts.
Care
Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry. Reshape the roses while they are damp.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is short and reliable. A 2.75 in (7.0 cm) disc grows to 16 loops that measure 14 in (35.6 cm) around. Twenty-eight net rounds give 16.8 in (42.7 cm) of length, and the 56-sc band matches the net’s circumference exactly. Check your gauge at each checkpoint, and the holder will finish at 7 × 19.7 in (17.8 × 50.0 cm), ready to hang beside your sink.
Happy crocheting!
