This curtain is made of hanging strands of fan-shaped motifs. Each fan looks like a ginkgo leaf, with open spokes and a soft scalloped edge, and hangs above a slim stem with leaves. Light shows through the open spaces, so the curtain screens a window or doorway without blocking it.
The sample uses one color, a bright tangerine orange. A single color shows off the stitch texture and suits boho, Scandinavian, and seasonal rooms alike. The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.
The finished curtain measures 60 in (152.4 cm) wide and 73 in (185.4 cm) long, including the top rod pocket and the tassels. It has 10 strands, and each strand has 9 motifs.
Construction is modular. You make 90 identical motifs (fan plus leafy stem), link them into 10 strands, add a hanging cord and a tassel to each strand, and attach all strands to a crocheted rod-pocket band.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 60 in (152.4 cm) wide x 73 in (185.4 cm) long
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: DK (light worsted / #3), mercerized cotton
- Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
- Number of pieces: 90 motifs, 10 tassels, 10 hanging cords, 1 heading band
- Layout: 10 strands, 9 motifs per strand, spaced 6 in (15.2 cm) apart
- Piece size: one motif is 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide x 7 in (17.8 cm) tall (fan 3 in / 7.6 cm, plus stem 4 in / 10.2 cm)
- Size before border: each strand is 71 in (180.3 cm) from cord top to tassel tip

Materials
Yarn: Use a mercerized cotton or cotton blend in DK weight, about 115 m (126 yd) per 50 g. Mercerized cotton keeps the spokes crisp and the leaf tips sharp, and it hangs straight without stretching much.
- Tangerine orange: 650 g, about 1,495 m (13 balls of 50 g)
Estimated use: motifs 450 g, tassels 50 g, heading band 55 g, cords 10 g. The 650 g total includes about a 15% margin for gauge swatches and differences in tension.
Tools:
– 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Stitch markers
– Scissors
– Stiff card, 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall, for tassels
– Small amount of yarn scraps for stuffing the tassel heads
– Blocking mat, rustproof pins, spray bottle
– Measuring tape

Special stitches
Large Leaf (LL): Ch 8. Count the chains from the hook as #1 to #8. #1 is the leaf tip and #8 sits at the stem.
– Side A, in the back bumps: sl st in #2, sc in #3, hdc in #4, dc in #5, dc in #6, hdc in #7, sc in #8. Sl st into the stem stitch at the base.
– Side B, in the front loops of the same chains: sc in #8, hdc in #7, dc in #6, dc in #5, hdc in #4, sc in #3, sl st in #2.
– Tip: ch 2, sl st in #1.
– Vein: sl st loosely in the remaining back loop of #2 through #8, which brings you back to the stem.
You get 7 stitches per side, a pointed tip, and a raised center vein. The leaf is 1.25 in (3.2 cm) long.
Small Bud (SB): Ch 5.
– Side A, in the back bumps: sl st in #2, sc in #3, hdc in #4, sc in #5. Sl st into the stem.
– Side B, in the front loops: sc in #5, hdc in #4, sc in #3, sl st in #2.
– Tip: ch 1, sl st in #1.
– Vein: sl st in the back loops of #2 through #5.
The bud is 0.75 in (1.9 cm) long.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Heading gauge: 16 sc x 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) square, which is 4 sc and 4.5 rows per inch.
Chain gauge: 5 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm), worked loosely.
Test one motif first. Make one complete motif and block it before you make the rest. Check these sizes as you go:
- After Fan Row 2: 2.5 in (6.4 cm) across the straight edge
- After Fan Row 3: 4 in (10.2 cm) across
- After Fan Row 4: 5.25 in (13.3 cm) across
- After Fan Row 5: 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide x 3 in (7.6 cm) tall
- Finished stem with leaves: 4 in (10.2 cm), from the ring to the bottom loop
- Full motif: 7 in (17.8 cm) tall
If it’s too big: go down to a 3.25 mm hook, or make your tr stitches shorter. If it’s too small: go up to a 3.75 mm hook. Spacing depends on fan width, so a fan wider than 5.75 in (14.6 cm) will crowd its neighbors.

Fan Motif
Make a ring: ch 6, then sl st in the first ch.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Work 10 dc in the ring, keeping the stitches over the upper part of the ring. Turn. (11 dc)
The lower part of the ring stays free. The stem attaches there later.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the first st, then 2 dc in each st across, including the top of the tch. Turn. (22 dc)
This is the solid half-circle band.
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as tr + ch 1) in the first st, tr in next st, ch 1 20 times, tr in the top of the tch. Turn. (22 tr, 21 ch-1 sps)
Row 4: Ch 6 (counts as tr + ch 2), tr in next tr, ch 2 20 times, tr in the 4th ch of the tch. Turn. (22 tr, 21 ch-2 sps)
Stacking tr on tr makes the long, unbroken spokes.
Row 5 (scalloped edge): This row makes 7 lobes, and each lobe covers 3 ch-2 sps.
- Lobe: (sc, hdc, dc) in the next sp, dc in the next tr, (dc, tr, dc) in the next sp, dc in the next tr, (dc, hdc, sc) in the next sp. (11 sts)
- Center lobe: the same as a Lobe, but work (dc, tr, ch 5, tr, dc) in the middle sp. (12 sts + ch-5 hanging loop)
Ch 1, sc in the first tr. Work Lobes 1 to 3, putting a sl st in the next tr after each lobe. Work the Center lobe, then a sl st in the next tr. Work Lobes 5 to 7, with a sl st in the next tr after Lobes 5 and 6 only. Finish with sc in the top of the tch. Fasten off.
Row 5 count: 1 + (6 x 11) + 12 + 6 sl st + 1 = 86 sts, plus 1 ch-5 loop.
Spoke check: The 7 lobes each use 2 inner tr, which makes 14. Add 6 tr under the sl st notches and 2 end tr, and you get 22, which matches Row 4.
Stem and Leaves
With the fan right side facing and the ring at the top, join yarn with a sl st around the free lower edge of the ring, at the center.
Stem chain: Ch 20. For the bottom loop, ch 4 and sl st in the 4th ch from the hook.
Working back up the stem, in the back bumps of the stem chains:
1. Sl st in the next 6 ch.
2. LL, then a second LL from the same stitch. The leaves fall to opposite sides.
3. Sl st in the next 5 ch.
4. LL, then LL again from the same stitch.
5. Sl st in the next 4 ch.
6. SB, then SB again from the same stitch.
7. Sl st in the next 5 ch.
Stem check: 6 + 5 + 4 + 5 = 20 chains.
Sl st around the ring, then fasten off and weave in the ends. The slip stitches up the chain give the stem a corded look. Each motif has 4 large leaves and 2 buds.
Make All Pieces
- Motifs: 90 in tangerine (10 strands x 9)
- Tassels: 10 in tangerine
- Hanging cords: 10 in tangerine
- Heading band: 1 in tangerine
Tassel (make 10): For the head, work in a magic ring:
– Rnd 1: 6 sc. (6)
– Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st. (12)
– Rnd 3: sc in each st. (12)
Stuff the head firmly with scraps.
Wrap yarn 30 times around the 4.5 in (11.4 cm) card. Tie the bundle at the top with a 12 in (30.5 cm) strand and cut the bottom loops. Push the tied top into the head, pulling the tie ends up through the center.
- Rnd 4: sc2tog 6 times, closing the head around the bundle. (6)
Wrap the neck tightly 4 times and trim the strands to 4.25 in (10.8 cm). The tassel is 5 in (12.7 cm) long including the 0.75 in (1.9 cm) head.

F = one fan-and-leaf motif in tangerine.
Joining
Method: Join loop to loop, one join between each pair of motifs. Each motif’s bottom stem loop joins the ch-5 hanging loop of the fan below it.
- Lay two blocked motifs in a line, the top motif’s stem pointing toward the lower fan’s hanging loop.
- Push the bottom loop through the ch-5 loop and line them up flat.
- With a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail, whipstitch the two loops together with 4 stitches. Knot, then weave the tail up into the stem.
- Repeat for all 9 motifs. That’s 8 joins per strand.
Hanging cord: Join yarn with a sl st in the ch-5 loop of Motif 1. Ch 15, turn, and sl st in the back bump of each ch back down. (15 sl st) Sl st in the loop, then fasten off. The cord is 3 in (7.6 cm) long.
Tassel: Tie the tassel’s tie ends through Motif 9’s bottom loop so the head sits right against it.
Tension advice: Pull the whipstitches snug but not tight. A loose join lets motifs twist, and a tight one puckers the hanging loop.
Size checkpoint: cord 3 in + 9 motifs x 7 in (63 in) + tassel 5 in = 71 in (180.3 cm) per strand. Lay all 10 strands side by side and fix any strand that is more than 0.5 in (1.3 cm) off.
Border: Rod-Pocket Heading
Border gauge: 4 sc and 4.5 rows per inch (16 sc x 18 rows = 4 in / 10.2 cm).
Foundation: Ch 241. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (240 sc)
Rows 2–18: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (240 sc per row)
The short ends are 18 rows, 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.
Row 19 (fold and attach): Fold the band in half lengthwise so the foundation edge sits behind Row 18. Ch 1 and work sc through both layers in each st. (240 sc)
Count the stitches in sections of 24. In the 12th stitch of each section, also pick up the top chain of one hanging cord, so the cord is caught in the sc. You attach 10 cords this way, at stitches 12, 36, 60, 84, 108, 132, 156, 180, 204, and 228.
Fasten off. Sew both short ends closed for 0.25 in (0.6 cm) at the fold side only, so the rod can still pass through.
Why the math works: Each strand gets 24 stitches of heading, so 10 strands x 24 sc = 240 sc. At 4 sc per inch, 240 sc is 60 in (152.4 cm). Placing cords in the middle of each 24-stitch section gives 9 gaps of 6 in (15.2 cm), which is 54 in, plus 3 in (7.6 cm) at each end, for 60 in in total. Each fan is 5.5 in wide, which leaves a 0.5 in (1.3 cm) gap between neighboring fans. The 18 rows fold to a 2 in (5.1 cm) pocket.
Final Blocking
- Mist each motif until it is damp, not soaked.
- Pin each fan to 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide x 3 in (7.6 cm) tall, with a pin at each lobe tip and at each notch.
- Open up every ch-2 space so the spokes run straight from the ring.
- Pin each leaf tip to a point and straighten the stem to 4 in (10.2 cm).
- Let everything dry completely. This takes 4–8 hours.
- Once the curtain is assembled, hang it, mist the strands lightly, and let them dry while hanging so they settle straight.
- Steam-block the heading flat at 60 in (152.4 cm), keeping the iron off the yarn.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every fan has 22 spokes, 7 lobes, and a centered hanging loop.
- Every stem has 4 large leaves, 2 buds, and a bottom loop.
- All 90 motifs are within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of the target size.
- Each strand has 8 secure joins, and every joined loop lies flat.
- All 10 strands measure 71 in (180.3 cm).
- The heading has 240 sc with cords at the correct 6 in (15.2 cm) intervals.
- Tassels are 5 in (12.7 cm) with tight, even necks.
- All ends are woven in and invisible from both sides.
Troubleshooting
- The fan cups or ruffles: your Row 2 or Row 4 count is off. Recount to 22 stitches.
- The fan is too flat or curls inward: your tr stitches are too short. Pull up a taller loop.
- Lobes are uneven: check that each lobe takes exactly 3 sps and that you have a sl st in every notch.
- Leaves look twisted: work Side B in the front loops only, and keep the vein slip stitches loose.
- Strands twist when hanging: block them while hanging. Even out the tension of the whipstitches at the joins.
- Strands are different lengths: stem chain tension varies from one motif to another, so compare stems against your sample motif.
- The heading waves: the foundation chain is too tight. Redo it with a hook one size larger.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, gently squeeze out the water, and dry flat. Then hang the curtain to finish drying. Dust it now and then with a cool hairdryer setting.

Final Notes
These are the measurements to check at each stage:
– One fan is 5.5 in x 3 in (14.0 x 7.6 cm), and the stem adds 4 in (10.2 cm), so a motif is 7 in (17.8 cm) tall.
– Nine motifs make 63 in (160.0 cm). With the 3 in (7.6 cm) cord and the 5 in (12.7 cm) tassel, a strand is 71 in (180.3 cm).
– Ten strands at 24 stitches each fill the 240-sc heading, which is 60 in (152.4 cm) wide.
– The 2 in (5.1 cm) rod pocket brings the finished curtain to 73 in (185.4 cm) long.
Check your first motif carefully. Once it matches, every strand and the heading will come out to the stated sizes.
Happy crocheting!
