This window curtain has seven lacy angels hanging from beaded cords. Nine cords hang from a narrow mesh header, and the angels sit at three different heights, so the curtain looks like a gentle snowfall against the glass.
The whole curtain is one color: soft ivory cotton that glows in winter light. Each angel has a round stuffed head, two fan-shaped wings with scalloped tips, and a flat skirt. The skirt starts solid at the neck, opens into chain arches, and ends with a scalloped hem.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain is 24.6 in (62.5 cm) wide and 27.5 in (69.9 cm) long. Each angel is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall and 4.5 in (11.4 cm) across the wings.
You’ll make the angels, beads, cords, and header as separate pieces. Then you tie the cords into the header, add a two-round border, sew on the beads and angels, and block everything.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 24.6 in (62.5 cm) × 27.5 in (69.9 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US terms
- Yarn weight: Fingering (super fine) mercerized cotton
- Hook: 2.5 mm (between US B-1 and C-2)
- Number of pieces: 1 header, 9 cords, 7 angels (each made of 1 head, 1 skirt, and 2 wings), and 96 beads
- Layout: 9 cords spaced 20 stitches apart, with angels at 3 heights
- Piece size: angel 4.5 in (11.4 cm) square, bead 0.5 in (1.3 cm), cord 26 in (66.0 cm)
- Header before border: 24.1 in (61.2 cm) × 1.0 in (2.5 cm)
- Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per side, 2 rounds
Materials
Use a smooth mercerized cotton, about 170 m (186 yd) per 50 g. It shows the lace clearly, holds starch, and won’t fuzz in a sunny window.
- Ivory (cream): 100 g, about 340 m (372 yd)
The angels use about 30 g and the beads about 20 g. The header and cords use about 18 g together. The 100 g total includes a margin for your swatch, sewing tails, and any pieces you need to remake.
Tools: 2.5 mm hook, about 10 g of polyester fiberfill, a tapestry needle, 4 stitch markers, scissors, a tape measure, rust-proof pins, a blocking mat, spray starch, and a tension rod that fits your window.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
- rev sc: reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
- MR: magic ring
- sk: skip
- sp: space
- st(s): stitch(es)
- tch: turning chain
Slip stitch cord: Chain the length you need. Then work 1 sl st into the back bump of each chain. This makes a firm cord that won’t stretch.
Rev sc: Work from left to right. Insert your hook into the next stitch to the right, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge:
– 28 sc and 32 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
– 7 dc = 1 in (2.5 cm)
– 3 dc rows = 1 in (2.5 cm)
– 8 sl st of cord = 1 in (2.5 cm)
Make one complete angel first and use it as your gauge test.
Checkpoints:
– Head: 0.8 in (2.0 cm) across.
– Skirt after Row 4: 2.3 in (5.8 cm) wide and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long.
– Skirt after Row 7: 3.0 in (7.6 cm) long.
– Finished skirt: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) long, with a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) hem.
– Wing: 1.75 in (4.4 cm) long.
– Bead: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) across.
– Header: the first 28 sc of Row 1 measure 4 in (10.2 cm).
Too big? Switch to a 2.25 mm hook. Too small? Switch to a 2.75 mm hook. Use the same hook for every piece.

Angel (Make 7)
Head
Leave a 10 in (25.4 cm) starting tail.
Round 1: MR, 6 sc in ring. Work in a spiral without joining. (6 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Round 3: Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * 6 times. (18 sts)
Rounds 4–6: Sc in each st around. (18 sts)
Round 7: Sc in next st, sc2tog; repeat from * 6 times. (12 sts)
Stuff the head firmly.
Round 8: Sc2tog 6 times. (6 sts)
Fasten off. Weave the tail through the front loops of the last 6 sts and pull it closed. This end is the neck.
Hanging loop: Use the starting tail at the magic ring. Draw up a loop through the ring, ch 8, and sl st back into the ring. Weave in the end.
Skirt
Ch 5 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 9 dc in ring. Turn. (10 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first st, dc in next 8 sts, 2 dc in top of tch. Turn. (12 dc)
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first st, dc in next 10 sts, 2 dc in tch. Turn. (14 dc)
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in first st, dc in next 12 sts, 2 dc in tch. Turn. (16 dc)
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 5, sk 2 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * 5 times. Turn. (6 sc, 5 ch-5 loops. This uses 1 + 5 × 3 = 16 sts.)
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 6, sc in next loop; repeat from * 5 times, ch 6, sc in last sc. Turn. (7 sc, 6 ch-6 loops)
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 7, sc in next loop; repeat from * 6 times, ch 7, sc in last sc. Turn. (8 sc, 7 ch-7 loops)
Each arch row adds 1 loop and 1 chain per loop. This widens the skirt into a bell shape.
Row 8 (hem): Ch 1, sc in first sc, (2 sc, hdc, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc, hdc, 2 sc) in next loop, sc in next sc; repeat from * 7 times. (7 scallops of 10 sts each, plus a ch-3 tip on each scallop, and 8 sc between them = 78 sts)
Fasten off. Leave a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail at the ring.
Wings (Make 2 per Angel)
Ch 4 and sl st to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ring. Turn. (7 dc)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * 5 times, dc in tch. Turn. (7 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * 5 times, dc in 3rd ch of tch. Turn. (7 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Assemble
- Sew the skirt ring to the neck, with the right side facing forward.
- Place the wing rings behind the neck so they touch. The scallops should point up and out at about 45 degrees.
- Sew the wings to the head and the top of the skirt. Check that the wingspan is 4.5 in (11.4 cm).
Beads (Make 96)
Round 1: MR, 6 sc in ring. (6 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Round 3: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Add a pinch of stuffing.
Round 4: Sc2tog 6 times. (6 sts)
Pull the bead closed. Leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail for sewing.
Cords (Make 9)
Ch 209, leaving 6 in (15.2 cm) tails at both ends.
Row 1: Sl st in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (208 sl st)
At 8 sl st per inch, 208 sts = 26 in (66.0 cm). All 9 cords should be the same length.
Header
Ch 170.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (169 sc)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), sk 1, dc in next st, ch 1, sk 1, dc in next st; repeat from * across. Turn. (85 dc, 84 ch-1 sps)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp across. Turn. (169 sc)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 3. (169 sc)
Don’t fasten off. The header should measure 24.1 in (61.2 cm) × 1.0 in (2.5 cm).
Make All Pieces
Make every piece in Ivory:
- 1 header
- 9 cords
- 7 angels (7 heads, 7 skirts, and 14 wings)
- 96 beads (10 for each of the 7 angel cords, plus 13 for each of the 2 outer cords)
In the layout grid below, A marks an angel. The drop is measured from the bottom of the header to the top of the angel’s hanging loop:
CORD: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
HIGH 8": - - A - - - A - -
MID 14": - A - - A - - A -
LOW 20": - - - A - A - - -
The drops are 8 in (20.3 cm), 14 in (35.6 cm), and 20 in (50.8 cm).
Joining
Method: Tie each cord into the header’s foundation chain. The border will lock the cords in place.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Hold the header with Row 1 at the bottom. Mark foundation loops 5, 25, 45, 65, 85, 105, 125, 145, and 165. That puts the cords 20 sts apart, about 2.9 in (7.4 cm). Loop 85 is the exact center of 169 sts, and loops 5 and 165 are each 4 sts from the ends, so the cords are symmetrical. Pull each cord’s top tail through its marked loop, knot it at the back, and sew the tail into Row 1.
Tension: Let each cord hang freely before you knot it. Don’t pull hard enough to pucker the chain.
Size checkpoint: Cord 1 to cord 9 should measure 22.9 in (58.2 cm).
Angels: Line up the top of each hanging loop at its drop from the grid. Sew the loop to the cord, then tack the back of the skirt at Row 4 to the cord. The cord should run behind the angel.
Beads: Every cord has 13 bead positions, spaced 2 in (5.1 cm) apart. Position 1 is 1 in (2.5 cm) below the header, and position 13 is 25 in (63.5 cm) below it. Each angel covers about 5 in (12.7 cm), so skip the 3 positions it hides:
- High angels: skip positions 5–7.
- Middle angels: skip positions 8–10.
- Low angels: skip positions 11–13.
That adds up to 7 × 10 + 2 × 13 = 96 beads. Sew each bead through its center to the cord 3 times.
Border
Border gauge: 7 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm). Each corner is a ch-1 space and doesn’t count as a stitch.
Round 1: Continue from Row 5. Ch 1, then work:
– Top: sc in each st across. (169 sc)
– First side: ch 1, then work 1 sc in each sc row end and 2 sc in each dc row end. (7 sc)
– Bottom: ch 1, then sc in each foundation loop. At the 9 cord positions, work through both the loop and the cord. (169 sc)
– Second side: ch 1, then 7 sc.
Ch 1 and sl st to the first sc. (352 sc + 4 corner spaces)
Round 2: Ch 1. Rev sc in each sc around, with ch 1 at each corner. Fasten off. (top 169, sides 7, bottom 169, sides 7 = 352 rev sc)
Why the math works: Each long edge has 169 sts, one for each header stitch, so the edges lie flat and the cords stay lined up. Each short side has 3 sc row ends + 2 dc row ends × 2 = 7 sts. At 7 sc per inch, that matches the 1.0 in (2.5 cm) height of the header. Two rounds add 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on each side, so the header finishes at 24.6 in (62.5 cm) × 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
Final Blocking
- Dampen the curtain with cool water and roll it in a towel.
- Pin the header straight at 24.6 in (62.5 cm) × 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
- Lay the cords straight, each measuring 26 in (66.0 cm).
- Pin out each skirt hem to 3.5 in (8.9 cm), pinning all 7 scallop tips.
- Fan the wings out to 4.5 in (11.4 cm) and pin them.
- Starch the angels, adding a little extra on the wings and hems.
- Let everything dry completely, which takes 12 to 24 hours.
- Weave the rod through every 4th ch-1 space of header Row 4.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Header is 24.6 in (62.5 cm) × 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
- [ ] Border has 169 sts on each long edge and 7 sts on each short side.
- [ ] All 9 cords are 26 in (66.0 cm) long and 20 sts apart.
- [ ] All 7 angels match the drops in the grid.
- [ ] All 96 beads are 2 in (5.1 cm) apart, except behind the angels.
- [ ] Every skirt has 7 scallops and every wing has 6 shells.
- [ ] All heads are firm and fully closed.
- [ ] No knots show on the front.
Troubleshooting
- Skirt curls: Loosen your arch chains, or use a larger hook for Rows 5–8.
- Skirt ruffles: Work 1 fewer ch in each loop on Rows 6 and 7.
- Wings droop: Starch them again, and tack the wing tips to the skirt.
- Cords twist: Steam them lightly, then let them hang for a day.
- Header puckers at the cords: Loosen the cord knots.
- Stuffing shows through: Use a smaller hook for the heads and beads.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and dry flat. Block and starch again after each wash.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other. At a gauge of 7 sc per inch, the 169-st header is 24.1 in (61.2 cm) wide, and the border brings it to 24.6 in (62.5 cm) × 1.5 in (3.8 cm). Add the 26 in (66.0 cm) cords and the curtain is 27.5 in (69.9 cm) long. Seven angels at 4.5 in (11.4 cm) and 96 beads at 0.5 in (1.3 cm) fill the space evenly.
Check your gauge on the first angel. If it matches, the rest of the measurements will too.
Happy crocheting!
