The Meadow Window Curtain is a light, airy panel of cream diamond mesh scattered with little six-petal flowers. Sunlight comes through the open net, and the flowers seem to float on the glass like a garden seen through lace.
The palette is soft: cream for the net, cornflower blue and lavender for the petals, and warm golden yellow for every flower center. The look is cottage-style and a little vintage, but the construction is simple.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished panel measures 35.5 x 72 in (90.2 x 182.9 cm) after blocking, and each flower measures 3 in (7.6 cm) across.
You work the mesh flat from the bottom up in rows of ch-5 loops, then add a narrow single crochet border all the way around. You make the 50 flowers separately and sew them on in staggered rows of alternating colors.

Materials
Use a smooth, mercerized or combed cotton in worsted weight. Cotton holds the diamond shape, doesn’t fuzz in sunlight, and washes well. The quantities below assume about 170 m per 100 g.
- Cream (mesh and border): 600 g / 1,020 m
- Cornflower blue (petals): 80 g / 136 m
- Lavender (petals): 80 g / 136 m
- Golden yellow (centers): 50 g / 85 m
All quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge differences and long sewing tails.
Tools:
– 5 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Stitch markers (at least 10)
– Rust-proof pins and a large blocking surface (a bed or a clean floor with towels works)
– Measuring tape
– Scissors
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- sp(s) – space(s)
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
- Rnd – round
Special term – mesh loop: One ch-5 that is anchored at each end by a sc. One mesh loop is 1 in (2.5 cm) wide at gauge.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Mesh gauge: 4 mesh loops = 4 in (10.2 cm) wide, and 8 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) tall, measured after light blocking.
Border gauge: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm), and 4 rounds of sc = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Test swatch: Ch 18 and work Rows 1–3 of the mesh pattern, then rep Rows 2–3 until you have 9 rows. You should have 4 loops across. Pin the swatch flat without stretching it. It should measure 4 in (10.2 cm) wide and about 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall.
Test one flower first. Measure it before you make the rest:
– After Rnd 1: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across
– After Rnd 3: 3 in (7.6 cm) across
Panel checkpoints:
– Row 1: 34 in (86.4 cm) wide
– After Row 20: about 10 in (25.4 cm) tall
– After Row 141: 70.5 in (179.1 cm) tall, measured flat and not hanging
If your work is too big, go down to a 4.5 mm hook. If it’s too small, go up to a 5.5 mm hook. Mesh stretches lengthwise when it hangs, so always measure it lying flat.

Mesh Panel
The panel has 34 mesh loops in every row. Odd rows begin and end with a sc, which gives a straight edge. Even rows begin with a turning ch-5 and end with a ch-2 and dc half-loop, which keeps the diamonds offset.
With cream, ch 138. This is 4 x 34 + 2.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Ch 5, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch. Rep from * across. (34 loops, 35 sc)
Row 2: Ch 5 and turn. Sc in first ch-5 sp. *Ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp. Rep from * 32 more times (34 sc total). Ch 2, dc in last sc. (34 full loops, including the turning ch-5, plus 1 half-loop)
Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in dc, then sk the ch-2 sp. *Ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp. Rep from * 33 more times, placing the last sc in the turning ch-5 sp. (34 loops, 35 sc)
Rows 4–141: Rep Rows 2–3 sixty-nine more times. Row 141 is a Row 3 type, so you end on a straight sc edge. Don’t fasten off.
Every 20 rows, place a marker and check the width. It should stay at 34 in (86.4 cm). If the panel narrows, you’re probably skipping the turning ch-5 sp at the end of odd rows.
Flower Appliqué
Each flower is one piece made in two colors.
Rnd 1 (yellow): Make a magic ring. Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a st) and work 12 dc in the ring. Pull the ring tight, then sl st to the first dc. (12 dc) Fasten off.
Rnd 2 (petal color): Join the petal color in any dc. Ch 1, then sc in the same st. Ch 3, sk 1 st. *Sc in next st, ch 3, sk 1 st. Rep from * 4 more times. Sl st to the first sc. (6 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)
Rnd 3 (petal color): Sl st into the first ch-3 sp. Work (sc, hdc, 4 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-3 sp around, then sl st to the first sc. (6 petals, 48 sts)
Fasten off and leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail for sewing. Weave in the yellow tail on the back.
The 4 dc in a short ch-3 space make each petal cup slightly and round out, which gives the puffy, scalloped silhouette.
Make All Pieces
- Flowers in blue petals: 25
- Flowers in lavender petals: 25
- Yellow centers: 50 (one per flower)
Layout grid (B = blue, L = lavender, from the bottom of the panel upward):
Row 11: B . L . B . L . B
Row 10: . L . B . L . B .
Row 9: L . B . L . B . L
Row 8: . B . L . B . L .
Row 7: B . L . B . L . B
Row 6: . L . B . L . B .
Row 5: L . B . L . B . L
Row 4: . B . L . B . L .
Row 3: B . L . B . L . B
Row 2: . L . B . L . B .
Row 1: L . B . L . B . L
Odd rows have 5 flowers and even rows have 4. That gives 6 x 5 + 5 x 4 = 50 flowers.
Measured from the left edge of the mesh body (before the border):
– 5-flower rows: centers at 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 in (7.6, 25.4, 43.2, 61.0, and 78.7 cm)
– 4-flower rows: centers at 6.5, 13.5, 20.5, and 27.5 in (16.5, 34.3, 52.1, and 69.9 cm)
Measured from the bottom of the mesh body, the flower rows are spaced 6 in (15.2 cm) apart, which is 12 mesh rows. The first row is centered at 5.25 in (13.3 cm) and the last at 65.25 in (165.7 cm). This leaves 5.25 in (13.3 cm) clear at the top and the bottom.
Joining (Sewing the Flowers On)
Work this step after the border and blocking so the mesh is at its final size.
- Lay the panel flat and mark the flower positions with stitch markers. Because 1 loop = 1 in, you can count loops instead of measuring.
- Center each flower over a sc joint of the mesh so its center anchors on a solid point.
- Thread the petal tail onto a tapestry needle. Whipstitch through the back loop of every 2nd stitch of Rnd 3, catching the mesh chain directly underneath. That’s 24 stitches per flower, 4 per petal.
- Add 3 small stitches through Rnd 1 and the mesh joint below it to keep the center flat.
Tension: Sew loosely enough that the mesh under the flower stays at 1 in (2.5 cm) per loop. If the net puckers around a flower, the stitches are too tight.
Size checkpoint: After sewing each row of flowers, the panel should still measure 35.5 in (90.2 cm) wide.
Border
Border gauge: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm). The side counts below are worked between the corner groups, and each corner group is worked separately.
Rnd 1: With the cream loop still on your hook at the top right corner, ch 1 and work 3 sc in the last sc of Row 141 (corner).
– Top edge: 4 sc in each of the 34 loops (136 sc). Then 3 sc in the first sc of Row 141 (corner).
– Left side: 2 sc in each of the 141 row ends, minus 1 at the very top and bottom where the corners sit. Work it as 282 sc evenly, 2 per row. Then 3 sc in the first foundation ch (corner).
– Bottom edge: 4 sc around each of the 34 sections of 3 skipped foundation ch (136 sc). Then 3 sc in the last foundation ch (corner).
– Right side: 282 sc evenly, 2 per row.
Sl st to the first sc. (136 + 282 + 136 + 282 + 4 x 3 = 848 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1. Sc in each st and work 3 sc in the center st of each corner group. Sl st to the first sc. (138 per short side, 284 per long side, 4 corners of 3 = 856 sts)
Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2. (140 per short side, 286 per long side, 4 corners of 3 = 864 sts) Fasten off.
Why the math works: 34 in x 4 sc = 136 sc, so the top and bottom match border gauge exactly. On the sides, 141 rows at 2 rows per inch is 70.5 in, and 70.5 x 4 = 282 sc. Each round adds 2 sts per side as the corner grows. After Rnd 3, the short side holds 140 + 2 center corner sts = 142 sts, and 142 ÷ 4 = 35.5 in (90.2 cm). The long side holds 286 + 2 = 288 sts, and 288 ÷ 4 = 72 in (182.9 cm). The border adds 0.75 in (1.9 cm) on each edge: 34 + 1.5 = 35.5 in and 70.5 + 1.5 = 72 in.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all cream ends along the solid border, not across the open mesh.
- Soak the panel in cool water for 10 minutes. Press out the water in a towel without wringing.
- Lay it flat and pin the corners to 35.5 x 72 in (90.2 x 182.9 cm).
- Pin the border every 4 in (10.2 cm), keeping the edges straight.
- Gently open the diamonds by hand so every loop is 1 in (2.5 cm) wide.
- Let it dry completely. Then sew on the flowers.
- Steam the flowers lightly from above, without pressing, so the petals stay rounded.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Panel is 35.5 x 72 in (90.2 x 182.9 cm) lying flat
- Every mesh row has 34 loops
- Row 141 ends with a straight sc edge
- Border Rnd 3 count is 864 sts, with square, flat corners
- 50 flowers: 25 blue and 25 lavender, each 3 in (7.6 cm) across with 6 petals
- Flower rows are 6 in (15.2 cm) apart, staggered, and alternate colors
- No puckering under any flower
- All ends are woven in and invisible from the front
Troubleshooting
- Diamonds lean to one side: You’re working into the chain instead of the ch-5 sp. Insert the hook under the loop.
- Panel grows wider: Make sure you skip the ch-2 sp at the start of odd rows.
- Border ruffles: Use a 4.5 mm hook for the border, or check you’re working 4 sc per loop, not 5.
- Border pulls in: Check for 2 sc per row end, not 1.
- Petals look flat: Your ch-3 sps are too loose. Chain more firmly or use a 4.5 mm hook for Rnd 2.
- Flower center has a hole: Pull the magic ring tighter before you join.
- Curtain stretches too long when hung: Re-block it flat and dry it flat, never hanging.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and dry flat, reshaping the mesh to its blocked size. Don’t tumble dry or hang the panel while it’s wet.

Final Notes
The whole project rests on one measurement chain:
– 1 mesh loop = 1 in (2.5 cm), so 34 loops = 34 in (86.4 cm)
– 2 rows = 1 in (2.5 cm), so 141 rows = 70.5 in (179.1 cm)
– 4 sc per inch of border gives 136 and 282 sc per side
– 3 border rounds add 0.75 in (1.9 cm) per edge, for a finished panel of 35.5 x 72 in (90.2 x 182.9 cm)
– 50 flowers, each 3 in (7.6 cm), sit in 11 rows spaced 6 in (15.2 cm) apart
Check your gauge, and everything else follows.
Happy crocheting!
