This window valance pairs a cream lattice band with crisp green scallops and a row of tiny ornaments hanging below. Pine trees alternate with green wreaths, and each wreath has a cream bow. Each charm hangs from a short green cord with a round bead, so it looks like a set of ornaments on a garland.
There are only two colors: a warm cream for the lattice and bows, and a deep forest green for the scallops, trees, wreaths, and cords. The style is cozy farmhouse Christmas. It looks especially good against a snowy window.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished valance measures 36¼ in (92.1 cm) wide and 4¾ in (12.1 cm) tall. With the ornaments, it hangs 10¾ in (27.3 cm) from the rod to the lowest tree.
You work the cream band lengthwise in a chain-loop net, then close it with a solid row. Next, add a green scallop border to the top and bottom edges. Make 5 trees, 4 wreaths, and 4 bows separately, then attach each charm to the bottom border with a beaded chain cord.

Materials
Use a smooth worsted yarn with good stitch definition. Cotton blends hang crisply in a window, and acrylic is lighter and cheaper. Avoid fuzzy yarns, because they blur the lattice and the tree picots. The amounts below assume about 200 m per 100 g.
- Cream: 70 g / 140 m (band, bows)
- Forest green: 100 g / 200 m (borders, trees, wreaths, cords)
These quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge swatches and a little frogging.
Tools:
- 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers (at least 10)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Blocking mat and rust-proof pins
- Spray bottle
- 8 clip-on curtain rings and a curtain rod (for hanging)
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- sc3tog – single crochet 3 together
- sk – skip
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS – right side
Special stitches:
- Picot: ch 3, sl st in first ch.
- Bobble (bob): (yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2) 3 times in the same st, yo, pull through all 4 loops.
- Bead: ch 3, (yo, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2) 4 times, yo, pull through all 5 loops. This makes a small round knob in the cord.
- Shell: 5 dc in the same st.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 17 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc. That works out to 4 sts per 1 in (2.5 cm).
Make one tree first to test your gauge. Its body should be 3¼ in (8.3 cm) wide across Row 1 and 3 in (7.6 cm) tall before you add the edging. Next, make a band swatch: ch 18, then sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, for 17 sc. It should measure 4¼ in (10.8 cm).
Checkpoints:
- Band Row 1: 145 sc = 36¼ in (92.1 cm)
- Band after Row 7: 3¼ in (8.3 cm) tall
- Band with both borders: 4¾ in (12.1 cm) tall
- Wreath after Rnd 2: 2 in (5.1 cm); after Rnd 3: 2¾ in (7.0 cm)
- Tree with edging: 3¾ × 3½ in (9.5 × 8.9 cm)
If your swatch is too big, go down 0.5 mm. If it is too small, go up 0.5 mm. Don’t change stitch counts, because the charm spacing depends on 145 sts.

Band (Cream)
The band is worked lengthwise. Rows 2–6 form the diamond lattice.
Foundation: With cream, ch 146.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (145 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 5, sk 3, sc in next st; rep from * 35 more times, turn. (36 ch-5 loops, 37 sc)*
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), sc in first ch-5 loop, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 loop; rep from * 34 more times, ch 2, dc in last sc, turn. (35 ch-5 loops + 2 half loops)*
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 loop; rep from * 34 more times, ch 5, sc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn. (36 ch-5 loops, 37 sc)*
Rows 5–6: Repeat Rows 3–4.
Row 7 (closing row): Ch 1, sc in first sc, 3 sc in next ch-5 loop, sc in next sc; rep from * 35 more times. (145 sc = 37 sc worked into existing sc + 108 sc worked into loops)* Do not fasten off.
Ends: Ch 1, turn the band 90 degrees, and work 12 sc evenly down the short end: 1 sc in each sc row end and 2 sc around each mesh row end. Fasten off. Join cream at the opposite short end and work 12 sc the same way. Fasten off.
Checkpoint: the band measures 36¼ × 3¼ in (92.1 × 8.3 cm).
Trees (Green) – Make 5
Each tree is a triangle worked from the bottom up. The edging adds three picot tiers to each side.
Foundation: Ch 14.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (13 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (13 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog, turn. (11 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc across, turn. (11 sc)
Rows 5–12: Continue the same way. Decrease at both ends on odd rows, and work even on even rows. (9, 9, 7, 7, 5, 5, 3, 3 sc)
Row 13: Ch 1, sc3tog. (1 st – the tip) Do not fasten off.
Edging round: Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the tip st. Work down the left side with 1 sc in each of the 12 row ends, and make a picot after the 3rd, 6th, and 9th sc. Work 3 sc in the first foundation ch, sc in the next 11 ch, and 3 sc in the last ch. Work up the right side with 12 sc in the row ends, again making a picot after the 3rd, 6th, and 9th sc. Sl st to the first sc. (43 sc, 6 picots, 1 ch-3 tip loop)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. The ch-3 tip loop is where the cord attaches.
Wreaths (Green) – Make 4
Foundation: Ch 12, sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 24 sc in ring, sl st to first sc. (24 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * 7 more times, sl st to first sc. (32 sc)*
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next st, bob in next st; rep from * 15 more times, sl st to first sc. (32 sts = 16 sc + 16 bobbles, worked 1 per existing st)*
Fasten off. The bobbles make the bumpy texture of the wreath, and the center opening is about 1 in (2.5 cm) across. Place a marker in a Rnd 3 sc at the top center.
Bows (Cream) – Make 4
Loop strip: Ch 19. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (18 sc). Work 2 more rows of 18 sc. The strip measures 4½ × ¾ in (11.4 × 1.9 cm). Fold both short ends to the center back so they overlap by ¼ in (0.6 cm), and tack them down.
Tail strip: Ch 13. Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (11 hdc). The strip is 2¾ in (7.0 cm) long. Fold it at the middle into an upside-down V.
Assembly: Place the tails behind the loops. Wrap cream yarn 8 times around the center to pinch it, then secure at the back. Leave a long tail for sewing. The bow is 2¼ in (5.7 cm) wide.
Sew each bow over the top-center marker of a wreath so the tails hang down over the front of the ring.
Make All Pieces
- Cream: 1 band, 4 bows
- Green: 2 borders (on the band), 5 trees, 4 wreaths, 9 cords
Charm layout (left to right):
CHARM ROW: TREE WREATH TREE WREATH TREE WREATH TREE WREATH TREE
BORDER SC POINT: #3 #7 #11 #15 #19 #23 #27 #31 #35
Border (Green)
Border gauge: 4 sts = 1 in (2.5 cm). One scallop repeat uses 4 sts, so each scallop is 1 in (2.5 cm) wide and lines up with one lattice loop.
Top edge: With RS facing, join green in the first st of Row 7.
Row A: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (145 sc)
Row B: Ch 1, sc in first st, sk 1, shell in next st, sk 1, sc in next st; rep from * 35 more times. (36 shells, 37 sc points)* Fasten off.
Bottom edge: Rotate the band. With RS facing, join green in the first foundation ch and work Rows A–B across the 145 foundation loops. (145 sc, then 36 shells and 37 sc points)
Why the math works: 145 = 1 + (4 × 36). Every shell repeat uses exactly 4 sts and finishes on an sc, so the row starts and ends on a flat sc point at each corner. You don’t need any extra or skipped stitches.
Checkpoint: the band now measures 36¼ × 4¾ in (92.1 × 12.1 cm).
Joining
Method: Each charm hangs from a beaded chain cord. Work the cord upward from the charm and finish it with an sc into the bottom border.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Number the 37 sc points on bottom Row B from 1 to 37. Place markers in points #3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, and 35. These markers are 4 scallops apart, which is 4 in (10.2 cm) center to center. Points #3 and #35 sit 2 in (5.1 cm) from each end, so the row is centered: #19 is the exact middle. The 9 charms cover 32 in (81.3 cm).
Cord: With green, join with a sl st in the charm’s top. For a tree, use the ch-3 tip loop. For a wreath, use the marked top sc behind the bow. Ch 4, Bead, ch 4. Insert the hook from front to back through the marked sc point and work 1 sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Each cord is about 2½ in (6.4 cm) long.
Tension advice: Make the cord chains the same firmness as your foundation chain. If your chains are loose, the charms will twist and hang at different heights. Before you sc into the band, hold the cord next to a finished one to compare lengths.
Size checkpoint: The tree bottoms should sit 10¾ in (27.3 cm) below the top of the band. The wreaths should hang about ¾ in (1.9 cm) higher. The gap between neighboring charms should be about ¾ in (1.9 cm).
Final Blocking
- Lightly mist the whole valance with water. Don’t soak it, because wet cotton stretches.
- Pin the band flat to 36¼ × 4¾ in (92.1 × 12.1 cm).
- Open each lattice diamond with your fingertips so the loops form even X shapes.
- Pin the top of every shell so the scallops are round.
- Pin each tree to 3¾ × 3½ in (9.5 × 8.9 cm). Pin out each picot.
- Shape each wreath into a circle 2¾ in (7.0 cm) across, and puff up the bow loops.
- Let everything dry completely, then unpin it.
- Clip the 8 curtain rings onto top-border shells 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31, and 36. These are spaced 5 in (12.7 cm) apart, and the outer rings are 35 in (88.9 cm) apart.

Troubleshooting
Band is too long: Your chain is probably loose. Go down a hook size for the foundation chain only.
Lattice slants or curls: Check that Rows 3 and 4 have 35 full loops plus the turning chains. Block it firmly.
Scallops ruffle: Your dc are too tall. Use 4 dc per shell, or go down a hook size for Row B only.
Tree leans to one side: Make sure every decrease row has an sc2tog at both ends.
Wreath cups: Tighten Rnd 2 or steam it flat.
Charms spin: Pull the cord snug, or tack the back of the charm to the cord with a single stitch.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out the water in a towel, and dry flat while reshaping. Store the valance flat or loosely rolled so the picots and bows keep their shape.

Final Notes
Every measurement in this pattern builds on the one before it. A gauge of 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 145-st band that is 36¼ in (92.1 cm) wide. Seven rows make it 3¼ in (8.3 cm) tall, and two ¾ in (1.9 cm) borders bring it to 4¾ in (12.1 cm). The 36 one-inch scallops on the bottom border hold 9 charms spaced 4 in (10.2 cm) apart, for a total drop of 10¾ in (27.3 cm).
If you check your gauge on the first tree and keep the stitch counts exact, everything else will fit.
Happy crocheting!
