This strand curtain is made of eight long crochet strips that hang side by side from a rod in a doorway. Each strip is a single column of square flower motifs. Every motif has a four-petal cluster flower in the center, a ring of open chain loops around it, and a solid double crochet frame. A picot-loop edging runs around the whole strip, and a long wrapped tassel hangs from the bottom.
The palette is soft and earthy: cream, warm tan, terracotta, and sage green. You make two strips of each color and hang them in the order cream, tan, terracotta, sage, then the same order again. Light comes through the open loops and casts lacy shadows on the floor. It is a calm, farmhouse-style piece that frames a view without blocking it.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. Each finished strip measures 5 in (12.7 cm) wide and 65 in (165.1 cm) long before the tassel. With the 7 in (17.8 cm) tassel, each strand hangs 72 in (182.9 cm) below its rod clip.
For each strip, you make 16 motifs, join them into a column with slip stitches, work a two-round border, block the strip, and add the tassel. The eight strips are never joined to each other. Each one clips to the rod on its own.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished strip size: 5 in x 65 in (12.7 cm x 165.1 cm), plus a 7 in (17.8 cm) tassel
- Skill level: Easy intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hook: 5 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 8 separate strips, each made of 16 joined motifs (128 motifs total)
- Layout per strip: 1 motif wide x 16 motifs long
- Motif size: 4 in (10.2 cm) square
- Strip size before border: 4 in x 64 in (10.2 cm x 162.6 cm)
- Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) on every side
Materials
Choose a smooth mercerized or combed worsted cotton. Cotton keeps the cluster petals crisp, doesn’t fuzz in sunlight, and hangs straight without twisting.
The amounts below assume a yarn of about 100 g = 155 m (170 yd).
- Cream: 400 g / 620 m (2 strips)
- Tan: 400 g / 620 m (2 strips)
- Terracotta: 400 g / 620 m (2 strips)
- Sage green: 400 g / 620 m (2 strips)
Each strip uses about 160 g: roughly 128 g for the motifs, 22 g for the border, and 10 g for the tassel. These quantities include a margin of about 25% for gauge differences, swatching, and tassel trimming.
Tools:
- 5 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle and scissors
- Stitch markers
- Measuring tape
- Blocking mats and rust-proof pins
- Stiff card 8 in (20.3 cm) tall, for the tassels
- 8 curtain clip rings and a curtain rod at least 48 in (121.9 cm) wide
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- sp – space
- sk – skip
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
- BLO – back loop only
Special stitches
- 4-tr cluster (cl): *Yo twice, insert hook in st, yo and pull up a loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice; rep from * 3 more times in the same st (5 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 5 loops.
- Beginning cluster (beg cl): Ch 4, then work a 3-tr cluster in the same st (as above, but with 3 repeats). The ch 4 plus the cluster counts as one 4-tr cluster.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 dc = 4 in (10.2 cm) in a flat swatch with the 5 mm hook.
Before you start a full strip, make one motif and wet block it. That motif sets the size of everything that follows.
Checkpoints for one motif (measured flat, not stretched):
- After Round 2 (flower): about 2 in (5.1 cm) across, from petal tip to petal tip.
- After Round 3: about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) square.
- After Round 4: about 3.25 in (8.3 cm) square, measured across the side loops.
- After Round 5: 4 in (10.2 cm) square.
If the motif is too big (for example 4.25 in / 10.8 cm), go down to a 4.5 mm hook. If it’s too small (for example 3.75 in / 9.5 cm), go up to a 5.5 mm hook. Being off by 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per motif adds up to 4 in (10.2 cm) over a 16-motif strip, so don’t skip this step.

Motif (make 16 per strip)
Round 1 (RS): Make a magic ring. Ch 1 and work 8 sc into the ring. Sl st to the first sc and pull the ring closed. (8 sc)
Round 2 (flower): Beg cl in the same sc as the join, ch 5, sk next sc, *cl in next sc, ch 5, sk next sc; rep from * 2 more times. Sl st to the top of the beg cl. (4 clusters, 4 ch-5 sps)
The four clusters are the petals. The ch-5 sps between them become the corners of the square.
Round 3: Sl st into the next ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the same sp for the first corner. Ch 1, sc in the top of the next cluster, ch 1, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the next ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in the top of the next cluster, ch 1; rep from * 2 more times. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (16 dc, 4 sc, 4 ch-3 corner sps, 8 ch-1 sps)
Round 4 (open loop ring): Sl st in the next dc and into the corner ch-3 sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the same corner sp, *ch 4, sk the next 2 dc and ch-1 sp, sc in the next sc, ch 4, sk the ch-1 sp and next 2 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the next corner sp; rep from * 2 more times, ch 4, sc in the next sc, ch 4. Sl st to the first sc. (12 sc, 8 ch-4 sps, 4 ch-3 corner sps)
This round makes the open windows around the flower. Each side now reads: corner sc, ch-4 sp, center sc, ch-4 sp, corner sc.
Round 5 (frame, conversion round): Sl st into the next corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. *Dc in the next sc, 4 dc in the next ch-4 sp, dc in the next sc, 4 dc in the next ch-4 sp, dc in the next sc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner sp; rep from * 2 more times. On the last repeat, stop before the corner, because the first corner is already made. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3.
Stitch count: 12 dc worked 1 per sc + 48 dc worked into spaces (32 in ch-4 sps and 16 in corners) = 60 dc, plus 4 ch-2 corner sps.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Per-side count: each side has 15 dc between the corner ch-2 sps (2 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 2). For joining and the border, count each side as 17 positions: 1 corner ch-2 sp + 15 dc + 1 corner ch-2 sp. These 17 already include that side’s 2 corner positions.
Make All Pieces
Make 128 motifs in total:
- Cream: 32 motifs (16 per strip x 2 strips)
- Tan: 32 motifs
- Terracotta: 32 motifs
- Sage green: 32 motifs
Curtain layout (front view; each column is one strip of 16 motifs):
Rod: ================================================
Clip: o o o o o o o o
Strip: C T R S (gap) C T R S
| | | | | | | |
tassel at the bottom of every strip
C = cream T = tan R = terracotta S = sage green
Space the strips in each group about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) apart. Leave a wider gap in the center if you want an easy walk-through opening.
Joining
Join the 16 motifs of each strip into a single column. Each strip has 15 seams.
Method: Hold two motifs with RS together and the edges lined up. Slip stitch through the back loops of both motifs. Always join from the same side.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: each seam joins one 17-position side to another 17-position side.
- Insert the hook into both corner ch-2 sps, pull up a loop, ch 1, and sl st in the same sps (position 1).
- Sl st through the BLO of each of the 15 matching dc pairs (positions 2 to 16).
- Sl st in the next pair of corner sps (position 17).
That makes 17 sl sts per seam, with no extra stitches. Fasten off and add the next motif.
Tension: keep the sl sts loose and even. Tight seams pull the strip in and make the edges wave. If your seams feel stiff, go up one hook size for joining only.
Size checkpoint: the joined strip should measure 4 in x 64 in (10.2 cm x 162.6 cm), with every seam lined up corner to corner.
Border
Border gauge: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm). The two rounds together add 0.5 in (1.3 cm) to each side. Work the border in the same color as the strip.
Border Round 1 (conversion round): With RS facing, join yarn in the corner ch-2 sp at the top right of the strip. Ch 1.
- Top short side: 1 sc in the corner sp, 1 sc in each of the 15 dc, 1 sc in the next corner sp. (17 sc)
- Strip corner: ch 2.
- Long side: for each of the 16 motifs, work 1 sc in the corner ch-2 sp, 1 sc in each of the 15 dc, and 1 sc in the next corner ch-2 sp. At each seam, the two corner sps side by side each get their own sc. (16 x 17 = 272 sc)
- Strip corner: ch 2.
- Bottom short side: work as for the top. (17 sc)
- Strip corner: ch 2.
- Second long side: work as for the first. (272 sc)
- Last corner: ch 2, sl st to the first sc.
Stitch count: 510 sc worked 1 per dc + 68 sc worked into corner sps = 578 sc, plus 4 ch-2 corner sps.
Why the math works: each long side has 16 motifs with 17 positions each, so 16 x 17 = 272. Each short side is one motif side, so it has 17. The corner positions are already part of each side’s 17, and the ch-2 at each strip corner adds nothing to the side counts.
Border Round 2 (picot loops): Sl st into the first corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the same sp.
- Short side: sc in the first sc, *ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in the next sc; rep from * 7 more times. (17 sts used: 9 sc, 8 ch-3 loops)
- Corner: (sc, ch 3, sc) in the ch-2 sp.
- Long side: *sc in the next sc, ch 3, sk 1 sc; rep from * 135 more times. (272 sts used: 136 sc, 136 ch-3 loops)
- Corner: (sc, ch 3, sc) in the ch-2 sp.
Repeat the short side, corner, and long side once more, then sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Stitch count: 298 sc and 292 ch-3 loops. That’s 272 sc and 272 loops on the long sides, 18 sc and 16 loops on the short sides, and 8 sc and 4 loops at the corners.
Why the math works: 272 is even, so the 2-stitch repeat fits each long side exactly. 17 is odd, so each short side starts and ends with an sc, which gives a balanced edge.
Size checkpoint: the bordered strip should measure 5 in x 65 in (12.7 cm x 165.1 cm).
Tassel (make 1 per strip)
- Wrap yarn 20 times around the 8 in (20.3 cm) card. Cut along one edge to get 20 strands, each 16 in (40.6 cm) long.
- Thread a 12 in (30.5 cm) tie strand under the center sc of the bottom edge (the 5th of 9 sc). Fold the bundle in half over the tie and knot the tie tightly around the fold.
- Wrap a separate strand tightly around the bundle 8 to 10 times, 1 in (2.5 cm) below the fold. Tie it off and bury the ends inside the tassel.
- Trim the tassel to 7 in (17.8 cm), measured from the wrap to the bottom.
Final Blocking
- Soak each strip in cool water for 15 minutes.
- Press out the water gently. Don’t wring or twist.
- Roll the strip in a towel to remove more water.
- Lay it flat and pin it to 5 in x 65 in (12.7 cm x 165.1 cm).
- Pin out the ch-3 picot loops so the edge scallops open evenly. Nudge each flower so the petals sit centered.
- Comb the tassel straight with your fingers.
- Let the strip dry completely flat before you hang it. Cotton stretches if it’s hung wet.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every motif has 60 dc and 4 ch-2 corner sps in Round 5 and measures 4 in (10.2 cm) square.
- Each strip has 16 motifs and 15 seams of 17 sl sts each.
- The joined strip measures 4 in x 64 in (10.2 cm x 162.6 cm).
- Border Round 1 has 272 sc on each long side and 17 sc on each short side.
- Border Round 2 has 136 loops on each long side and 8 on each short side.
- Each finished strip measures 5 in x 65 in (12.7 cm x 165.1 cm).
- Each tassel is 7 in (17.8 cm) long and hangs from the center of the bottom edge.
- All eight strips match in length to within 0.5 in (1.3 cm).
- Ends are well hidden, since a doorway curtain is seen from both sides.
Troubleshooting
The petals look flat. Work all 4 tr of each cluster into the same sc and pull the final loop snug.
The motif cups. Round 5 is too tight. Go up a hook size for Round 5 only, or check that each ch-4 sp has 4 dc.
The motif ruffles. Check the corners. Each one should be exactly (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc).
The strip edges wave. Rework the seams with more even tension, keeping exactly 17 sl sts per seam.
The strip twists when hung. Re-block it flat. Twisting often comes from joining some seams from the RS and others from the WS.
Border Round 2 doesn’t end evenly. Recount Round 1. You need 272 sc on each long side and 17 sc on each short side.
Care
Hand wash in cool water, press out the water, and dry flat. A light re-block once or twice a year keeps the strips straight.

Final Notes
The whole curtain rests on one chain of measurements. One motif blocks to 4 in (10.2 cm) square, with 15 dc and 17 positions per side. Sixteen motifs joined with 17 sl sts per seam make a 4 in x 64 in (10.2 cm x 162.6 cm) strip. The border adds 0.5 in (1.3 cm) to every side, for a finished strip of 5 in x 65 in (12.7 cm x 165.1 cm). A 7 in (17.8 cm) tassel brings each strand to 72 in (182.9 cm). Make eight strips in four colors, hang them in two groups, and enjoy the lacy shadows they cast.
Happy crocheting!
