The Sunlit Lattice Tassel Bell is a hanging ornament with a boho look. It starts with a small solid crown, opens into a diamond lattice, and finishes with a thick rope-twist rim and a ring of round-headed tassels. A dark wooden ring and a coil-wrapped cord sit on top.
The whole bell is made in one cream cotton yarn. With one color, the texture does the work: the open lattice catches the light, the rim band looks solid, and the soft tassels give it movement. It looks good in a window, on a doorknob or with dried grasses.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished bell body measures 4¾ in (12.1 cm) across the rim and 4½ in (11.4 cm) tall. With the tassels it is 9 in (22.9 cm) tall, not counting the hanging loop.
You work the bell top-down in joined rounds. It starts from a magic ring, grows through seven lattice rounds, and becomes a solid band that ends in crab stitch. Then you tie on 12 tassels and add the cord and wooden ring.

Materials
Yarn: Use a smooth, firm worsted-weight cotton or cotton cord yarn, about 1.7 m per gram. Cotton keeps the lattice crisp and the tassels hang straight. Acrylic tends to make floppy diamonds.
- Cream (natural ivory): 75 g, about 128 m (140 yd)
- Bell body: about 18 g / 31 m
- Tassels, heads and ties: about 40 g / 68 m
- Hanging cord and coil wrap: about 5 g / 9 m
These amounts include a margin of about 15–20%, so you don’t run short while making tassels.
Tools:
– 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
– Wooden ring, 1½ in (3.8 cm) outer diameter, dark stain
– Stiff cardboard cut to 9 in (22.9 cm) long, for winding tassels
– Tapestry needle
– 1 stitch marker
– Sharp scissors
– Fine-tooth comb or pet brush, for the tassel fringe
– Spray bottle and a small round form for blocking (a balloon, a cup or a rolled towel)
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp(s) – space(s)
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rnd(s) – round(s)
- rep – repeat
- rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
Special stitch – rev sc (crab stitch): Work from left to right (left-handers work right to left). Insert the hook into the next stitch to the right, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops. This makes the twisted, rope-like ridge on the rim.
Increase space: (sc, ch 4 or ch 5, sc) worked into the same space. This adds one new lattice loop.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc worked in the round.
Make the crown (Rnds 1–3) first as your gauge test. Lay it flat after Rnd 2 and measure:
- After Rnd 2: the flat disc is about 1⅝ in (4.1 cm) across.
- After Rnd 3: the crown cups into a dome, about 1⅝ in (4.1 cm) across and ¾ in (1.9 cm) tall.
- After Rnd 7: hung from a finger, the bell is about 2¼ in (5.7 cm) tall and 3¼ in (8.3 cm) across at its widest.
- After Rnd 10: the body is 3¾ in (9.5 cm) tall.
- After Rnd 11: laid flat, the band is 7½ in (19.1 cm) wide, which is 15 in (38.1 cm) around.
- After Rnd 13: the body is 4½ in (11.4 cm) tall and 4¾ in (12.1 cm) across the rim.
If the crown is too big: go down to a 4 mm (US G-6) hook. If it is too small: go up to a 5 mm (US H-8) hook. The lattice loops follow the same tension, so fixing the crown fixes the whole bell.

Bell Body
Work in joined rounds with the right side facing you. Do not turn. Put the marker in the first sc of each round.
Crown
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 1, then work 10 sc into the ring. Pull the ring closed, leaving a small opening about the width of a pencil. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (10 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (20 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (20 sc)
Because there are no increases in Rnd 3, the crown bends downward into a dome.
Lattice
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in the first st, ch 3, skip the next st. Sc in the next st, ch 3, skip the next st. Rep from * 8 more times. Join to the first sc. (10 sc, 10 ch-3 sps)
Rnd 5: Sl st into the first ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in the same sp. Ch 4, sc in the next ch-3 sp. Rep from * 8 more times, ch 4, join to the first sc. (10 ch-4 sps)
Each sc sits in the middle of a loop from the round below. That is what makes the diamonds.
Rnd 6 (growth): Sl st into the first ch-4 sp, ch 1. (Sc, ch 4, sc) in the current sp, ch 4, sc in the next sp, ch 4, then move to the next sp. Rep from * 5 times in total. Join to the first sc. (15 sc, 15 ch-4 sps)
Each repeat uses 2 old spaces and makes 3 new loops. 5 repeats × 3 = 15.
Rnd 7: Sl st into the first ch-4 sp, ch 1. Sc in the sp, ch 5, move to the next sp. Rep from * 15 times in total. Join. (15 ch-5 sps)
Rnd 8 (growth): Sl st into the first ch-5 sp, ch 1. (Sc, ch 5, sc) in the current sp, ch 5, sc in the next sp, ch 5, sc in the next sp, ch 5, then move to the next sp. Rep from * 5 times in total. Join. (20 sc, 20 ch-5 sps)
Each repeat uses 3 old spaces and makes 4 new loops. 5 repeats × 4 = 20.
Rnd 9: Sl st into the first ch-5 sp, ch 1. Sc in the sp, ch 5. Rep from * in each sp around. Join. (20 ch-5 sps)
Rnd 10: Sl st into the first ch-5 sp, ch 1. Sc in the sp, ch 6. Rep from * in each sp around. Join. (20 ch-6 sps)
The longer chains in Rnd 10 flare the lower bell outward, like the skirt of a bell. Check: the body should be 3¾ in (9.5 cm) tall.
Border: Rope-Twist Rim Band
Border gauge: 4 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm), so 60 sc = 15 in (38.1 cm) around.
Rnd 11 (conversion): Sl st into the first ch-6 sp, ch 1. Work 3 sc in each ch-6 sp around. Join. (3 sc × 20 sps = 60 sc, with 0 extra stitches added)
Pack the stitches snugly inside each loop so the band reads as solid with no gaps.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (60 sc, worked 1 per stitch + 0 added)
Rnd 13 (trim): Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, join. (60 rev sc, worked 1 per stitch + 0 added) Fasten off and weave in the end.
Why the math works: The last lattice round has 20 spaces. Three sc per space gives exactly 60 stitches, and 60 stitches at 4 per inch is 15 in (38.1 cm). That circumference gives a diameter of 15 ÷ 3.1416 = 4.77 in, which rounds to the stated 4¾ in (12.1 cm) rim. Sixty also divides evenly by 12, so the tassels land every 5 stitches with no leftovers.
Tassels (Make 12)
Ball head (make 12): Cut a 36 in (91.4 cm) length of yarn. Wind it tightly into a small ball about ½ in (1.3 cm) across and tuck the end in.
Tassel:
1. Wrap the yarn 20 times around the 9 in (22.9 cm) card. Slide the bundle off and keep the loops together.
2. Thread a 10 in (25.4 cm) tie strand through the top fold. Do not knot it yet.
3. Set a ball head in the middle of the strands, right under the fold. Spread the strands evenly over the ball so they cover it all the way around.
4. Tie the tie strand firmly at the top. Leave both tails long, because you’ll use them to attach the tassel.
5. Wrap a 12 in (30.5 cm) strand 6–8 times tightly around the strands directly below the ball. This makes the neck and the round head. Knot it, then thread the tails down into the skirt with the needle.
6. Cut through the loops at the bottom. Comb the strands and trim the skirt to 4 in (10.2 cm) below the neck.
Each tassel: head ½ in (1.3 cm) + skirt 4 in (10.2 cm) = 4½ in (11.4 cm).
Attaching: Count the Rnd 12 sts and mark sts 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, 33, 38, 43, 48, 53 and 58. That is every 5th stitch, 12 in total. At each mark, pull both tie tails up through the Rnd 12 stitch just behind the crab-stitch ridge. Knot them on the inside so the head sits right under the rim. Hide the tails inside the bell.
Hanging Cord and Wooden Ring
Cord: Ch 60. Sl st in the back bump of the second ch from the hook and in the back bump of each ch across (59 sl sts). The cord should measure about 14 in (35.6 cm). Add or remove chains to adjust.
Assembly:
1. Fold the cord in half to make a loop. Pass both ends down through the wooden ring.
2. Thread both ends down through the crown opening into the bell. Tie them together in a tight double knot on the inside, so the ring sits right on top of the crown.
3. Coil wrap: With a 24 in (61.0 cm) strand, wrap the two cord strands tightly just above the ring for ¾ in (1.9 cm). Pass the end under the wraps with the needle and trim it. The hanging loop above the wrap should be about 5 in (12.7 cm).
Full height: about 14 in (35.6 cm) from the top of the loop to the tassel tips.
Final Blocking
- Lightly spray the bell until it is damp but not dripping.
- Slip it over a round form about 4¾ in (12.1 cm) across at the bottom, such as an inflated balloon or a cup with a towel wrapped around it.
- Gently pull each lattice diamond into an even shape. Line up the sc points into straight diagonal lines.
- Roll the rim band between your fingers so the crab-stitch ridge sits outward and even.
- Mist the tassels, comb them straight and smooth each head round.
- Let it dry completely, about 6–8 hours. Hang it up and trim any uneven tassel ends.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Crown is a closed, smooth dome with no visible hole except the cord opening
- Rnd 6 has 15 loops, Rnd 8 has 20 loops, Rnd 11 has 60 sc
- Diamonds look the same size within each round
- Rim measures 15 in (38.1 cm) around and 4¾ in (12.1 cm) across
- Crab-stitch ridge is continuous, with no flat gap at the join
- 12 tassels, exactly 5 stitches apart
- Every ball head is round and every neck wrap is the same height
- All skirts are 4 in (10.2 cm) below the neck
- Wooden ring sits flat on the crown and the coil wrap is tight
Troubleshooting
- Crown ruffles: Your stitches are too loose. Use a smaller hook for Rnds 1–3 only.
- Bell looks like a cone, not a bell: Your Rnd 10 chains are too tight. Chain loosely, or work ch 7 instead of ch 6 in that round only. The Rnd 11 count stays at 60.
- Rim waves: You probably have more than 3 sc in some spaces. Count again: it must be 60.
- Rim pulls in: The crab stitch is too tight. Go up 0.5 mm for Rnd 13 only.
- Lattice leans in a spiral: Make sure each sl st moves you into the first space before you start the round. Don’t skip that step.
- Ball head shows through: Use 2–4 more wraps when making the tassel.
- Tassels twist: Mist them, comb them and let them dry hanging.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out the water in a towel, and reshape it over the blocking form to dry. Comb the tassels when dry; do not tumble dry.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other. A crown of 1⅝ in (4.1 cm) at gauge gives a lattice 3¾ in (9.5 cm) tall. Its 20 spaces turn into 60 rim stitches, which make a 15 in (38.1 cm) circumference and a 4¾ in (12.1 cm) rim. That rim takes exactly 12 tassels, 5 stitches apart, and each 4½ in (11.4 cm) tassel brings the bell to 9 in (22.9 cm) tall. Check each measurement as you reach it, and the bell will finish at the right size.
Happy crocheting!
