Terracotta Bloom Dreamcatcher Crochet Pattern

The Terracotta Bloom Dreamcatcher is a boho wall hanging built around a 10 in (25.4 cm) metal ring. A layered mandala sits in the center: a cream eight-petal flower backed by a ring of pointed terracotta petals. Around it, eight small cream flowers alternate with eight terracotta leaves. Short cream chain bars hold everything to the hoop.

Below the hoop hang five strands. Each one has a cream flower, a terracotta leaf, a small crocheted bead and a terracotta tassel streaked with cream. The tassels are staggered so the bottom edge forms a soft V.

The palette is just two colors, warm terracotta and natural cream, in DK cotton. All instructions use US crochet terms. The hoop measures 10 in (25.4 cm) across, or about 10.5 in (26.7 cm) after wrapping. The finished piece is about 23 in (58.4 cm) long from the top of the hoop to the tip of the center tassel.

The construction is easy to follow. You crochet the mandala, flowers, leaves and beads separately and join the inner pieces into one medallion. Then you wrap the hoop in single crochet and catch the medallion loops and dangle loops as you go. Tassels go on last.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: hoop 10 in (25.4 cm); wrapped hoop about 10.5 in (26.7 cm); total length about 23 in (58.4 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: DK (#3) cotton
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
  • Number of pieces: 1 mandala, 13 small flowers, 13 leaves, 5 beads, 5 tassels, 1 hoop wrap
  • Layout: 8 flowers and 8 leaves alternate around the mandala; 5 dangles hang from the bottom of the hoop

  • Size before border: bare ring 10 in (25.4 cm)
  • Border depth: single crochet wrap, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on each edge

Materials

Choose a smooth, mercerized or combed DK cotton. It gives crisp petal points and holds its shape on a wall. Avoid fuzzy blends, which hide the lattice.

  • Terracotta: 75 g / 170 m (mandala outer rounds, leaves, beads, hoop wrap, tassels)
  • Natural cream: 35 g / 80 m (mandala center, flowers, chain bars, tassel accents, collars)
  • 10 in (25.4 cm) metal ring
  • 3.5 mm (E-4) hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers (at least 16)
  • Scissors
  • Small amount of scrap yarn for stuffing beads
  • Rustproof pins and a blocking mat
  • A 5 in (12.7 cm) piece of cardboard for tassels

Quantities include a margin of about 15 percent for swatching and tassel trimming.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch chain
  • sl st slip stitch
  • sc single crochet
  • hdc half double crochet
  • dc double crochet
  • tr treble crochet
  • sc2tog single crochet 2 together
  • BLO back loop only
  • MR magic ring
  • sp space
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • rep repeat

Connector bar (cb N): ch N, sl st into the target stitch or space, then sl st back into each of the N chains to return to your work. The bar is doubled and firm. It is not counted as a stitch.

Capture sc: insert the hook through the named loop and around the ring together, then complete the sc. The loop is locked inside the wrap.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Check gauge on the pieces themselves. Make one flower and one leaf first, then block them.

  • Chains: 5 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm)
  • Flower: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across after Round 3
  • Leaf: 1.75 x 1.25 in (4.4 x 3.2 cm)
  • Mandala: Round 1 = 1.25 in (3.2 cm); Round 3 = 2.75 in (7.0 cm); Round 5 = 3.5 in (8.9 cm); Round 6 = 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip
  • Hoop wrap: about 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) along the ring

If your pieces are more than 0.125 in (0.3 cm) too large, go down half a hook size. If they are too small, go up half a size. The ring can’t change size, so a mandala larger than 4.75 in (12.1 cm) will crowd the flowers. Fix this before you make the small pieces.

Mandala

Round 1 (cream): MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in ring, sl st to top of ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip 1, sc in next st, ch 3, skip 1; rep from * 6 more times, sl st to first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)*

Round 3: Sl st into first ch-3 sp. In each ch-3 sp work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc), sl st to first sc. (8 petals, 56 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1. Fold petals forward and work behind them. Sc around the post of the next Round 2 sc, ch 5; rep from * 7 more times, sl st to first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 loops)* Fasten off cream.

Each ch-5 loop now sits directly behind one cream petal.

Round 5 (terracotta): Join in any ch-5 loop. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in same loop, 7 dc in each remaining loop, sl st to top of ch-3. (56 dc)

Round 6 (petal points): Ch 1. Sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, (tr, ch 2, tr) in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * 7 more times, sl st to first sc. (56 sts worked 1 per st + 8 extra = 64 sts, plus 8 ch-2 tips)* Fasten off.

Each group of 7 sts becomes one pointed petal, lined up behind a cream petal. The gap between two groups is a valley.

Small Flowers (make 13, cream)

Round 1: MR, ch 1, 12 sc in ring, sl st to first sc. (12 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip 1, sc in next st, ch 3, skip 1; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc. (6 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)*

Round 3 (dangle flowers, make 5): Sl st into first ch-3 sp. In each ch-3 sp work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc), sl st to first sc. (6 petals, 42 sts) Fasten off and leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.

For the 8 inner flowers, stop after Round 2. Their Round 3 is also the joining round (see Joining).

Leaves (make 13, terracotta)

Foundation: Ch 9.

Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch (tip). Working along the opposite side of the chain: sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch. Ch 3 (stem loop), sl st to first sc. (17 sts + ch-3 stem loop)

Round 2: Ch 1. Sc BLO in next 7 sts, sc in next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in center tip st, sc in next st, sc BLO in next 7 sts, 3 sc in stem loop, sl st to first sc. (21 sc + ch-2 tip) Fasten off. On 8 of the leaves, leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail for sewing.

The foundation chain forms the center vein. The BLO stitches add a raised ridge along each side.

Beads (make 5, terracotta)

Round 1: MR, 6 sc in ring. (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sc)

Round 3: Sc in each st. (12 sc)

Round 4: Sc2tog 6 times. (6 sts) Stuff firmly with scrap yarn, then close the hole and fasten off. The bead is about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across.

Tassels (make 5)

Wrap 24 terracotta and 6 cream strands around the 5 in (12.7 cm) cardboard, mixing the cream in evenly. Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) cream tie strand under the top and knot it tight. Cut the bottom loops. Wrap cream 6 times around the bundle 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top, knot, and bury the ends inside. Trim the tassel to 4.5 in (11.4 cm).

Make All Pieces

  • Cream: 1 mandala center (Rounds 1-4), 8 inner flowers (Rounds 1-2), 5 dangle flowers (complete)
  • Terracotta: mandala Rounds 5-6, 13 leaves, 5 beads
  • Both colors: 5 tassels

Layout around the hoop: hoop sc 1 is top center, and you count clockwise. F = flower loop, L = leaf loop, D = dangle loop.

Hoop sc: 1 9 17 25 33 41 49 57 65 73 81 89 97 105 113 121
Piece: F L F L F L F L F L F L F L F L
Dangles: D1 = sc 45, D2 = sc 55, D3 = sc 65, D4 = sc 75, D5 = sc 85

Joining

Step 1: Leaves to mandala. Lay the mandala right side up. Place one leaf so its stem loop overlaps a ch-2 petal tip, with the leaf pointing outward. Sew the stem loop to the tip with the leaf tail, using 4 small stitches through both layers. Keep the leaf centered on the petal axis. Repeat for all 8 petal tips.

Step 2: Leaf hoop loops. Join cream in the ch-2 tip of each sewn leaf, ch 8, sl st in same sp, and fasten off. Each loop is about 0.8 in (2.0 cm) long when folded.

Step 3: Inner flowers, Round 3 (joining round). Center a flower in each valley. Number its ch-3 sps 1 to 6 clockwise, with sp 1 pointing outward. Sl st into sp 1, then work:

  • Sp 1: (sc, hdc, 2 dc), ch 5, sl st in top of last dc (hoop loop, about 0.5 in / 1.3 cm folded), (dc, hdc, sc).
  • Sp 2: (sc, hdc, 2 dc), cb 2 into the 5th sc of the nearest leaf side, (dc, hdc, sc).
  • Sp 3: (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc).
  • Sp 4: (sc, hdc, 2 dc), cb 5 into the mandala valley between the two sc, (dc, hdc, sc).
  • Sp 5: (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc).
  • Sp 6: (sc, hdc, 2 dc), cb 2 into the 5th sc of the other neighboring leaf, (dc, hdc, sc).

Sl st to the first sc. (42 sts, same as a dangle flower) The connectors don’t change the count, because each split petal still holds 3 dc.

Keep the bars relaxed, not stretched. A cb 2 spans 0.4 in (1.0 cm) and a cb 5 spans 1 in (2.5 cm).

Step 4: Dangle strands. For each dangle flower, join cream in the center dc of one petal and chain the hanging loop:

  • D1 and D5: ch 12, 1.2 in (3.0 cm)
  • D2 and D4: ch 20, 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • D3: ch 32, 3.2 in (8.1 cm)

Sl st in the same dc. On the opposite petal, work cb 3, 0.6 in (1.5 cm), into a leaf stem loop. Sew a bead to each leaf tip, then wrap cream 3 times around the join to make a collar.

Size checkpoint: the medallion measures about 9 in (22.9 cm) from leaf tip to leaf tip. With the medallion centered, every hoop loop should reach just past the ring.

Border (Hoop Wrap)

Tie the medallion into the ring at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock with scrap yarn, with the top flower at 12 o’clock.

Border gauge: 4 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm). The ring’s circumference is 31.4 in (79.8 cm).

Round 1 (terracotta): Make a standing sc around the ring, capturing the top flower loop. This is sc 1. Work around in sc, packing the stitches snugly, and make a capture sc at every position in the layout grid. At sc 65, capture both the bottom flower loop and the D3 loop in one sc. Sl st to sc 1. (128 sc)

Count per section: each eighth of the ring holds 16 sc, with 1 flower capture and 1 leaf capture 8 sc apart. The bottom sections also hold the dangle captures at sc 45, 55, 65, 75 and 85.

Hanging loop: Ch 10, sl st in sc 1 and fasten off. The loop stands about 1 in (2.5 cm) tall.

Why the math works: 128 sc divided by 8 gives 16 sc per section, which matches the 8 mandala petals exactly. Flowers sit every 16 sc (45 degrees). Leaves sit halfway between them (22.5 degrees), in line with the petal tips. 128 sc over 31.4 in (79.8 cm) is about 4.1 sc per in, close enough to gauge to cover the metal fully. Captures don’t add stitches. Remove the scrap ties when the round is done.

Final Blocking

  1. Spritz the whole hoop lightly with water.
  2. Lay it flat on a blocking mat, face up.
  3. Pin each mandala petal tip and each leaf tip outward along its spoke line.
  4. Open each flower’s petals with your fingertips and pin the outward petal.
  5. Straighten every connector bar so it runs in a clean line.
  6. Lay the dangles straight down in their V shape. Let everything dry completely.
  7. Steam the tassels lightly, comb the strands, and trim them to 4.5 in (11.4 cm).

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Mandala is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip with 8 even petals.
  • All 16 inner loops are captured at the correct hoop sc.
  • No metal shows through the wrap.
  • Flowers sit in the valleys, and leaves point straight out from the petal tips.
  • Dangle loops step from 1.2 in to 2 in to 3.2 in (3.0, 5.1, 8.1 cm).
  • Tassels are all 4.5 in (11.4 cm), with even cream collars.
  • All ends are woven in and the hanging loop is secure.

Troubleshooting

  • Medallion sags off-center: a hoop loop is too long. Redo it 1 ch shorter.
  • Medallion ripples: the loops are too short or the bars are stretched. Add 1 ch.
  • Metal shows: add sc evenly, but keep the captures in the same place within each section.
  • Mandala cups: Round 5 is tight. Go up a hook size for that round only.
  • Leaves curl: pin them flat and wet-block.
  • Tassels splay: wrap the neck tighter and steam.

Care

Spot clean with mild soap and cool water, then reshape and dry flat. Keep it out of strong direct sun so the terracotta doesn’t fade.

Final Notes

The measurements build in a short chain. The flower is 1.5 in (3.8 cm), the leaf is 1.75 in (4.4 cm), and the mandala is 4.5 in (11.4 cm). Together they make a 9 in (22.9 cm) medallion that sits inside a 10 in (25.4 cm) ring wrapped in 128 sc. Check each piece before you join, and the hoop wrap will fall into place. Five staggered dangles bring the hanging to about 23 in (58.4 cm).

Happy crocheting!
