The Winter Blossom Lace Heart is a delicate ornament made in cream cotton thread. Three eight-petal flowers sit inside a heart-shaped lace frame. One flower fills each top lobe and a third sits at the bottom center. An open chain lattice ties them together and shapes the heart’s top dip and bottom point.
The look is soft and vintage, like an heirloom snowflake but warmer. A single cream color keeps it elegant on a tree, tied to a gift, or hung in a window. You can make a set of six in an evening or two, and they look beautiful together.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished heart measures about 4.25 in wide x 4 in tall (10.8 x 10.2 cm), not counting the hanging loop.
The construction is simple. You make two flower medallions, then a third flower that joins to both as you go. The result is one piece with no sewing. Next you work two lattice rounds around the outside of all three flowers to build the heart shape. A single round of sc finishes the edge and adds the hanging loop.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 4.25 in wide x 4 in tall (10.8 x 10.2 cm), plus a hanging loop of about 1.75 in (4.4 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate (clusters, join-as-you-go, working into chain spaces)
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Size 3 mercerized cotton crochet thread
- Hook: 2.25 mm (US B-1)
- Number of pieces: 1 finished ornament, built from 3 flower medallions joined as you go (no sewing)
- Layout: Flower 1 in the top left lobe, Flower 2 in the top right lobe, Flower 3 at the bottom center
- Flower size: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across, picot tip to picot tip
- Size before border: 4 in wide x 3.7 in tall (10.2 x 9.4 cm)
- Border depth: 1 round of sc, about 0.125 in (0.3 cm) on each edge
Materials
Choose a smooth, mercerized cotton thread in size 3. Mercerized cotton keeps clear stitch definition, takes stiffener well, and holds its shape on a branch. Avoid fuzzy or loosely plied thread, because the petal clusters will lose their crisp outline.
- Cream (ivory) size 3 cotton thread: 6 g / 15 m for one heart. For a set of six hearts, plan on 36 g / 90 m.
- 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle with a small eye
- Scissors
- Rust-proof pins and a foam blocking board
- Fabric stiffener, spray starch, or a 1:1 mix of white glue and water
- Optional: paper heart template, 4.25 x 4 in (10.8 x 10.2 cm)
The quantities include a margin of about 20% for gauge differences, tails, and a test flower.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
- sk: skip
- sp(s): space(s)
- RS: right side
Special stitches
- Petal (3-tr cluster): *Yo twice, insert hook in stitch, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] twice; repeat from * 2 more times in the same stitch, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
- Beginning petal: Ch 3, then work a 2-tr cluster in the same stitch (as above, but repeat only 1 more time), yo and pull through all 3 loops.
- Picot join: Ch 1, sl st into the matching ch-3 picot of the neighboring flower, ch 1. This replaces the ch 3 of a normal picot.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Exact gauge is not critical for an ornament, but size matters if you want a matched set. Make Flower 1 first and measure it before going further.
- After Round 2 of a flower: about 1.2 in (3.0 cm) across the petal tips.
- After Round 4 of a flower: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across, picot tip to picot tip.
- Three flowers joined: about 3.6 in wide x 2.6 in tall (9.1 x 6.6 cm).
- After Lattice Round A: about 3.75 in wide x 3.1 in tall (9.5 x 7.9 cm).
- After Lattice Round B: 4 in wide x 3.7 in tall (10.2 x 9.4 cm).
- After the border: 4.25 in wide x 4 in tall (10.8 x 10.2 cm).
If your flower is larger than 1.5 in (3.8 cm), go down to a 2 mm hook or tighten your chains. If it is smaller, try a 2.5 mm hook. Measure lace flat and unstretched. A difference of 0.125 in (0.3 cm) per flower is fine. A larger difference will add up across three flowers and the lattice.

Flower Medallions
Flower 1 and Flower 2
Make 2 alike.
Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 15 dc in the ring. Pull the ring closed, leaving a small center hole. Sl st to the top of the ch-3. (16 dc)
Round 2: Work a beginning petal in the same stitch, ch 4, sk next dc. Petal in next dc, ch 4, sk next dc; repeat from * 6 more times. Sl st to the top of the beginning petal. (8 petals, 8 ch-4 sps)*
The petals now spread out from the center like a daisy. Each ch-4 sp forms one open window between petals.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in the top of the same petal, ch 5. Sc in the top of the next petal, ch 5; repeat from * 6 more times. Sl st to the first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 loops)*
The ch-5 loops arch over the windows and form the round frame around the flower.
Round 4: Sl st in the first ch-5 loop, ch 1. Work (3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc) in each ch-5 loop around. Sl st to the first sc. (48 sc, 8 ch-3 picots)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Check the 1.5 in (3.8 cm) measurement now.
Flower 3 (Join-As-You-Go)
Lay Flower 1 and Flower 2 RS up, with Flower 1 at the upper left and Flower 2 at the upper right. Leave a small gap between them. Flower 3 will go below and between them.
Rounds 1–3: Work as for Flower 1. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 loops)
Round 4 (joining round): Sl st in the first ch-5 loop, ch 1.
- In the first loop: 3 sc, picot join to the lower left picot of Flower 2 (the one facing Flower 3), 3 sc.
- In the next loop: 3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc. This free picot becomes Flower 3’s top picot. It points up into the gap between the top flowers.
- In the next loop: 3 sc, picot join to the lower right picot of Flower 1, 3 sc.
- In each of the remaining 5 loops: 3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc.
Sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. (48 sc, 6 free ch-3 picots, 2 joined picots)
You now have one piece. Flower 1 and Flower 2 do not touch each other, and the gap between them becomes the heart’s top dip.
Picot names. To follow the lattice, think of each flower as a clock face, RS up. The 8 picots sit at 12, 1:30, 3, 4:30, 6, 7:30, 9, and 10:30. Flower 1 is joined at its 4:30 picot, Flower 2 at its 7:30 picot, and Flower 3 at its 10:30 and 1:30 picots. That leaves 7 free picots on Flower 1, 7 on Flower 2, and 6 on Flower 3, for 20 free picots in total.
Heart Lattice
Work both lattice rounds with RS facing, in the normal crochet direction (counterclockwise for right-handers). Left-handers can work the same steps in the mirrored direction.
Lattice Round A
Join the thread with a sc in Flower 1’s 12 o’clock picot.
- [Ch 5, sc in next free picot of Flower 1] 4 times (10:30, 9, 7:30, 6).
- Ch 5, sc in Flower 3’s 9 o’clock picot.
- [Ch 5, sc in next picot of Flower 3] 4 times (7:30, 6, 4:30, 3).
- Ch 5, sc in Flower 2’s 6 o’clock picot.
- [Ch 5, sc in next picot of Flower 2] 5 times (4:30, 3, 1:30, 12, 10:30).
- Ch 4, sc in Flower 2’s 9 o’clock picot.
- Ch 3, sc in Flower 3’s 12 o’clock picot.
- Ch 3, sc in Flower 1’s 3 o’clock picot.
- Ch 4, sc in Flower 1’s 1:30 picot.
- Ch 5, sl st to the first sc.
(20 sc, 16 ch-5 sps, 2 ch-4 sps, 2 ch-3 sps; 94 ch in total)
The two short ch-3 sps pull down into Flower 3’s top picot and form the V of the heart. Call the sc on Flower 3’s 6 o’clock picot the tip sc and mark it with a scrap of thread.
Lattice Round B
Sl st in the next 2 ch, ch 1, sc in the same ch-5 sp.
- Ch 5, [sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5] 5 times. You have now worked into the first 6 ch-5 sps on the left side.
- Sc in the next ch-5 sp (the last one before the tip sc), ch 3.
- Point: (sc, ch 5, sc) in the tip sc, ch 3.
- [Sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5] 8 times, working up the right side.
- Sc in the next ch-4 sp, ch 3.
- Sc2tog across the next 2 ch-3 sps (pull up a loop in each sp), ch 3. This sc2tog is the dip stitch.
- Sc in the next ch-4 sp, ch 5.
- Sc in the last ch-5 sp, ch 5. Sl st to the first sc.
(21 sc counting the sc2tog, 17 ch-5 sps, 4 ch-3 sps; 97 ch in total)
Check: 6 sc in step 1 + 1 + 2 + 8 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 21 sc. The ch-5 sps total 6 + 1 (point) + 8 + 2 = 17. The ch-3 sps sit on both sides of the point loop and both sides of the dip stitch, so the heart stays symmetrical.
Measure now: 4 in wide x 3.7 in tall (10.2 x 9.4 cm).
Border and Hanging Loop
Border gauge: about 9 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm) along the outer edge.
Border Round: Sl st into the next ch-5 sp, ch 1.
- Work 6 sc in each of the next 6 ch-5 sps. (36 sc)
- 3 sc in the next ch-3 sp. (3 sc)
- Tip: (3 sc, ch 2, 3 sc) in the point ch-5 loop. (6 sc)
- 3 sc in the next ch-3 sp. (3 sc)
- 6 sc in each of the next 8 ch-5 sps. (48 sc)
- 3 sc in the next ch-3 sp. (3 sc)
- Hanging loop: Sc in the dip stitch, ch 36, sl st in the same dip stitch. (1 sc)
- 3 sc in the next ch-3 sp. (3 sc)
- 6 sc in each of the last 2 ch-5 sps. (12 sc)
Sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (115 sc, 1 ch-2 tip, 1 ch-36 hanging loop)
Per side: From the dip to the tip, the left half has 3 + 12 + 36 + 3 + 3 = 57 sc. The right half has 3 + 3 + 48 + 3 = 57 sc. Add the single dip sc: 57 + 57 + 1 = 115 sc.
Why the math works. Each ch-5 loop is about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) long. The border sits on the outside of a curve, so it needs a little extra length. Six sc per ch-5 loop gives that extra length without ruffling. The ch-3 sps at the dip and tip sit in tight or sharp areas, so 3 sc is enough there. At 9 sc per inch, 115 sc gives an outer edge of about 12.8 in (32.5 cm), which fits the outline of a 4.25 x 4 in (10.8 x 10.2 cm) heart. The ch-2 at the tip sharpens the point, and the single dip sc keeps the top V crisp.
The ch-36 strand measures about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) and hangs as a loop of about 1.75 in (4.4 cm). For a twisted cord look, twist the chain a few times before the sl st.
Final Blocking
- Draw a heart template 4.25 in wide x 4 in tall (10.8 x 10.2 cm). Place it under plastic wrap on the blocking board.
- Soak the heart in stiffener, or wet it if you plan to use spray starch. Gently squeeze out the excess. Do not wring.
- Lay the heart RS up on the template.
- Pin the tip first, then the dip stitch, then the outer edge of each top lobe.
- Pin each flower center so the hole stays round. Ease each petal straight with the tip of a pin.
- Pin each lattice loop open so the windows look even.
- If you are using starch, spray it now. Let the heart dry completely, for at least 8 hours.
- Unpin and check the measurements. Hang the heart by its loop to confirm that it hangs straight.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Each flower has 8 petals and a small, round center hole.
- Each flower measures 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across.
- Flower 3 is joined to both top flowers, and the top flowers do not touch each other.
- Lattice Round A has 20 sc. Lattice Round B has 21 sc.
- The border has 115 sc: 57 on each half plus 1 at the dip.
- The tip is sharp and centered under Flower 3.
- The finished heart is 4.25 in wide x 4 in tall (10.8 x 10.2 cm).
- All ends are woven into solid stitches, not lattice chains.
- The hanging loop is centered and the heart hangs straight.
Troubleshooting
The flower cups or waves. The chains don’t match your petal height. In Round 2, change the ch-4 to ch 3 if the flower waves, or to ch 5 if it cups.
The center hole is too big. Pull the magic ring tighter before the sl st, and weave that tail in a circle around the hole.
The heart looks lopsided. You probably skipped or doubled a picot in Lattice Round A. Check that you have 20 sc and that you worked each flower’s picots in order.
The dip is shallow. Tighten the two ch-3 sps in Round A, or change them to ch 2.
The tip is rounded. Pin the tip firmly during blocking, or change the point loop to ch 6.
The border ruffles. Work 5 sc in each ch-5 loop instead of 6. The border then has 99 sc.
The heart hangs tilted. Move the hanging loop’s sl st so it sits exactly in the dip stitch.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, roll in a towel, and reshape flat to dry. If the heart softens after washing, apply starch or stiffener again.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. One flower is 1.5 in (3.8 cm). Three joined flowers are 3.6 x 2.6 in (9.1 x 6.6 cm). Lattice Round A brings the piece to 3.75 x 3.1 in (9.5 x 7.9 cm), Lattice Round B to 4 x 3.7 in (10.2 x 9.4 cm), and the border to 4.25 x 4 in (10.8 x 10.2 cm). If your first flower matches, the rest follows. Check your stitch counts at each round, block the heart firmly, and make as many as your tree can hold.
Happy crocheting!
