This curtain is made of soft ivory cords hung from a wooden dowel. Lacy cream angels and small gold stars alternate down each cord, with pearl beads spaced between them. Hung in a doorway with warm lights behind it, it glows without looking busy.
The palette is just cream cotton, gold metallic yarn, and ivory pearls. The angels have a round 3D head, an open cone-shaped skirt with a scalloped hem, and two fan-shaped lace wings. The stars are flat and simple, so they balance the detailed angels.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain is about 33 in (83.8 cm) wide from the first strand to the last and hangs 72 in (182.9 cm) below a 40 in (101.6 cm) dowel. Each angel is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall, and each star is 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across.
Here’s how it goes together. You crochet each angel in four parts (skirt, hem border, head, and wings) and each star in two rounds. Then you make 12 beaded slip-stitch cords, sew the motifs to the cords at set heights, and loop the cords over the dowel.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 33 in (83.8 cm) wide x 72 in (182.9 cm) drop
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: DK / light (#3) cotton; DK-weight metallic
- Hook: 3.0 mm
- Number of pieces: 42 angels, 42 stars, 12 cords
- Layout: 12 strands, 3 in (7.6 cm) apart, alternating Strand A and Strand B
- Angel size: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall; hem 3 in (7.6 cm) wide laid flat
- Skirt height before border: 2.4 in (6.1 cm)
- Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm), plus picots
Materials
Choose a smooth, mercerized DK cotton. It shows the lace clearly and holds the cone shape after blocking. Avoid fuzzy yarns, which blur the open mesh.
- Cream DK cotton (50 g / 110 m per ball): 300 g (660 m), for 42 angels (about 4 g / 8.8 m each) and 12 cords
- Gold metallic DK-weight yarn (25 g / 95 m per ball): 75 g (285 m), for 42 stars (about 1.5 g each)
These quantities include a margin of about 20% for swatching and tails.
Tools and notions:
– 3.0 mm crochet hook
– 90 ivory pearl beads, 8 mm, with holes at least 2 mm wide (84 needed)
– Polyester fiberfill, about 20 g
– Wooden dowel, 40 in (101.6 cm) long, 1 in (2.5 cm) diameter
– Tapestry needle and a big-eye beading needle
– Stitch markers, tape measure, rustproof pins, spray bottle
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sp – space
- sk – skip
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec – sc2tog
- MR – magic ring
Special stitches:
– V-st: (dc, ch 2, dc) in the same space.
– Shell: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same space. In Round 6, the larger shell is (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
– Picot: ch 3, worked between two sc in the same space.
– Bead chain (bch): slide one pre-strung bead up against the hook, then ch 1 around it.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Make one complete angel and one star before you start the full set. Gauge: 5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm), and one dc round is 0.4 in (1.0 cm) tall. For cords, 4 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Checkpoints:
– After skirt Round 1, the ring is 1 in (2.5 cm) across.
– After Round 3, the skirt is 1.2 in (3.0 cm) tall.
– After Round 6, the hem is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide laid flat.
– The head is 0.9 in (2.3 cm) across once stuffed.
– Each wing is 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall.
– Each star is 1.5 in (3.8 cm) from point to point.
– On a cord, the first 40 ch measure 10 in (25.4 cm).
If your piece is too big, go down to a 2.75 mm hook. If it’s too small, go up to 3.25 mm. Check the cord gauge separately, because chains often run tighter than stitches.

Angel Skirt (make 42)
Use cream. The skirt is worked top-down in joined rounds and is not turned.
Foundation: Ch 6 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 15 dc in the ring, and sl st to the top of the ch-3. (16 dc) This solid band is the neck.
Round 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). [Dc in next dc, ch 1] 15 times. Sl st to the 3rd ch of the ch-4. (16 dc, 16 ch-1 sps)
Round 3: Sl st into the first ch-1 sp. Ch 3, dc in the same sp, ch 1. [2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 15 times. Sl st to the top of the ch-3. (32 dc, 16 ch-1 sps)
Round 4: Sl st in the next dc and into the next ch-1 sp. Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in the same sp, ch 1. [V-st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 15 times. Sl st to the 3rd ch of the ch-5. (16 V-sts, 32 dc)
Round 5: Sl st into the first ch-2 sp. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp, ch 1. [Shell in ch-2 sp of next V-st, ch 1] 15 times. Sl st to the top of the ch-3. (16 shells, 64 dc)
Round 6: Sl st in the next dc and into the ch-2 sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp, ch 2. [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next shell sp, ch 2] 15 times. Sl st to the top of the ch-3. (16 large shells, 96 dc, 16 shell sps, 16 ch-2 sps between shells)
The skirt now measures 2.4 in (6.1 cm) tall. Don’t fasten off; the border comes next.
Angel Head (make 42)
Use cream. The head is worked in continuous spiral rounds, so mark the first stitch of each round.
- Round 1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
- Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
- Round 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times. (18)
- Rounds 4–6: Sc in each st around. (18 each round)
- Round 7: [Sc, dec] 6 times. (12) Stuff firmly.
- Round 8: Dec 6 times. (6)
Fasten off and leave a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Weave the tail through the last 6 sts and pull it closed. Use the same tail to sew the head onto the top of skirt Round 1, centered over the ring.
Angel Wings (make 84, 2 per angel)
Use cream. The wings are worked flat in rows, turning at the end of each row.
Foundation: Ch 4 and sl st to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). [Dc, ch 1] 4 times in the ring, then dc in the ring. Turn. (6 dc, 5 ch-1 sps)
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in next dc. [Ch 2, dc in next dc] 3 times. Ch 2, dc in the 3rd ch of the turning ch-4. Turn. (6 dc, 5 ch-2 sps)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the first dc. [5 dc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next dc] 5 times, working the last sc in the 3rd ch of the turning ch-5. (5 fans: 25 dc + 6 sc)
Fasten off and leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail. Each wing is 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall.
To attach, sew the ring end of each wing to the back of the skirt across Rounds 2–3. Angle the wings up and out so the scalloped edges frame the head. With both wings on, the span is about 3.5 in (8.9 cm).
Stars (make 42)
Use gold metallic yarn.
Round 1: Ch 1 and work 10 sc in MR. Sl st to the first sc. (10 sc)
Round 2: [Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sk next sc, sl st in next sc] 5 times. (5 points)
Each repeat uses exactly 2 sc from Round 1, so 5 points use all 10 sc. Fasten off and leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.
Make All Pieces
Quantities:
– Cream: 42 skirts with borders, 42 heads, 84 wings, 12 cords
– Gold: 42 stars
There are two strand types:
– Strand A (make 6): stars at 6, 26, 46, and 66 in (15.2, 66.0, 116.8, and 167.6 cm); angels at 16, 36, and 56 in (40.6, 91.4, and 142.2 cm). That’s 4 stars and 3 angels.
– Strand B (make 6): angels at 6, 26, 46, and 66 in; stars at 16, 36, and 56 in. That’s 4 angels and 3 stars.
All positions are measured from the dowel to the center of the motif. Totals: angels 6 x 3 + 6 x 4 = 42, and stars 6 x 4 + 6 x 3 = 42.
Layout grid (A = angel, S = star; columns are strands 1–12, rows are drop heights):

Beaded Cords (make 12)
Use cream. Before you start, use the beading needle to string 7 pearls onto the yarn.
- Top loop: Ch 16 and sl st to the first ch. This makes a 4 in (10.2 cm) loop for the dowel.
- Chain down: Ch 288 (72 in / 182.9 cm). Work a bch at chains 44, 84, 124, 164, 204, 244, and 284. That puts pearls at 11, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, and 71 in (27.9, 53.3, 78.7, 104.1, 129.5, 154.9, and 180.3 cm).
- Firm the cord: Turn and sl st in the back bump of each ch back up to the loop. Sl st into the loop and fasten off. Each bead stays on the front face of its own stitch.
The cord count stays at 288 chains plus 16 loop chains. The sl st pass adds no length.
Joining
Method: Whipstitch each motif to the front of its cord with cream yarn, so the cord runs vertically behind the center of the motif.
Stitch-to-stitch logic:
– Angels: tack at three points. Back of the head (Round 4) goes to the cord at the motif position minus 1.3 in (3.3 cm). The neck (skirt Round 1) goes to the cord at minus 0.6 in (1.5 cm). The back center of the hem border goes to the cord at plus 1.3 in (3.3 cm). Take 2–3 stitches through one cord stitch at each point.
– Stars: tack the center ring to the cord with 3 stitches, then tack the top and bottom points.
Tension: Hang the cord while you sew, or lay it flat without stretching it. Pull each tack just snug. If you pull too tight, the cord puckers and shortens the drop.
Size checkpoint: Hang each finished strand from a hook. It should measure 72 in (182.9 cm) from the top of the loop fold to the cord tip, and each motif should sit within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of its mark.
Hanging: Slide the loops onto the dowel in the order A, B, A, B, and so on, spaced 3 in (7.6 cm) apart. Leave 3.5 in (8.9 cm) of bare dowel at each end. The math: 11 gaps x 3 in = 33 in, and 33 + 3.5 + 3.5 = 40 in (101.6 cm).
Border (Angel Hem)
The scallop border goes on each angel separately, not across joined pieces, so there’s no seam math. Border gauge: 5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm), and the round is 0.25 in (0.6 cm) deep.
Continuing from skirt Round 6:
Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the join and in the next 2 dc. (Sc, picot, sc) in the shell sp. Sc in the next 3 dc, then 2 sc in the next ch-2 sp. Repeat 15 times: sc in next 3 dc, (sc, picot, sc) in shell sp, sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off.
Count: 96 sc worked 1 per dc, plus 64 sc worked into spaces (2 in each of the 16 shell sps and 2 in each of the 16 between-shell sps), for 160 sc. Add 16 picots.
Count per repeat: 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 10 sc and 1 picot. 16 repeats x 10 = 160 sc.
Why the math works: Round 6 has 16 shells, and each shell gets one centered picot. The 2 sc in each between-shell space match the 2 chains of that space, so the hem lies flat and doesn’t ruffle. The beginning ch-3 of Round 6 counts as the first dc, so the repeat closes neatly at the join.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all tails before blocking, except the head-sewing tails you’ve already used.
- Mist each angel lightly until it’s damp, not soaked.
- Push a rolled paper cone into each skirt. Shape the hem to 3 in (7.6 cm) wide and open each picot.
- Pin the wings flat and fan each scallop to 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall.
- Pin the stars flat at 1.5 in (3.8 cm) and sharpen each point.
- Let everything dry completely, which takes about 12 hours.
- Hang the finished strands for 24 hours so the cords settle. Then re-measure the 72 in (182.9 cm) drop.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Every angel has 16 shells, a 160-sc border, and 16 picots.
- [ ] Every head is firmly stuffed, 0.9 in (2.3 cm) across, and centered.
- [ ] Wings sit at matching angles and heights.
- [ ] Every star has 5 even points.
- [ ] Each cord has 7 pearls at the marked heights.
- [ ] Strand A has 3 angels and Strand B has 4.
- [ ] Strands hang in A/B order, 3 in (7.6 cm) apart.
- [ ] All strands hang 72 in (182.9 cm).
- [ ] No tails show on the front.
Troubleshooting
- Skirt curls inward: Your Round 5–6 chains are tight. Loosen the ch-1 and ch-2 spaces, or go up a hook size for those rounds only.
- Hem ruffles: You worked extra sc into the spaces. Recount 10 sc per repeat.
- Head looks lumpy: Add stuffing in small pieces and roll the head between your palms.
- Wings droop: Tack the wing tips to the skirt at Round 3, then re-block.
- Strands hang at different lengths: Your cord gauge varied. Undo the sl st pass and add or remove chains at the bottom tip.
- Beads slip sideways: Work each bch firmly so the bead sits against its stitch.
- Angels twist on the cord: Add a fourth tack at the back of skirt Round 4.
Care
Spot clean with cool water and mild soap, then reshape and dry flat. Store each strand loosely coiled in tissue paper so the angels don’t crush.

Final Notes
Everything depends on the measurement chain. Gauge of 5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) gives a 3 in (7.6 cm) hem. Add the 0.25 in (0.6 cm) border and the 0.9 in (2.3 cm) head, and you get a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) angel. Cord gauge of 4 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm) turns 288 chains into a 72 in (182.9 cm) strand. Twelve strands spaced 3 in (7.6 cm) apart fill a 40 in (101.6 cm) dowel. Check each step before you move on, and the curtain will hang evenly.
Happy crocheting!
