The Lattice Ride Car Tissue Holder is a slim hanging pouch that keeps tissues within reach of the back seat. It has a solid oval base, a tall body of open lattice with small knots where the arches meet, a tissue slot with a raised edge on the front, a solid band at the top, and one strap that loops over a headrest post.
The sample is worked in a single taupe cotton cord, a calm color against beige or gray upholstery. The tissue pack shows softly through the lattice.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The holder measures about 4.75 in (12.1 cm) wide, 2.25 in (5.7 cm) deep and 9.75 in (24.8 cm) tall, not counting the strap. The strap loop stands about 3 in (7.6 cm) above the rim.
The holder is worked in one seamless piece. You crochet the oval base in joined rounds, then turn the wall up with a back-loop round. The lattice is worked in rounds, with turned rows through the slot section. Then you add the top band, work the strap up from the band, and edge the slot.

Materials
Pick a smooth, firm cotton or cotton-blend cord in DK weight. The knots and arches need clear stitch definition, so avoid fuzzy or splitty yarns. Mercerized cotton works well, and so does a 2 mm macramé-style cord that matches the gauge below.
- Taupe: 70 g, approximately 155 m (about 170 yd)
These quantities include a margin of about 20% for the gauge test and any reworking.
Tools
- 3.5 mm (E/4) crochet hook
- 3 locking stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Blocking pins and a folded towel
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- sp – space
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
- [ ] x – repeat the bracketed steps the stated number of times
Special stitch – Lattice Knot (LK): Work (sc, ch 1, sc) in the same stitch or space. Each LK makes the small knot where four arches meet. You’ll use its ch-1 again in the band.
Lattice loop: Each lattice round has 15 loops. Fourteen are ch-6 arches. The 15th closes the round as “ch 2, tr in first sc.” That takes up about the same space as a ch-6 and leaves your hook in the middle of the loop, ready for the next round.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- Solid sc: 20 sts and 22 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- Lattice: 1 loop = 0.8 in (2.0 cm) wide; 4 lattice rounds = 2 in (5.1 cm) tall
The base is your test piece. Work Rounds 1–6 and measure before you go on.
- After base Round 6: 4.75 in x 2.25 in (12.1 cm x 5.7 cm), 60 sts
- After Lattice Round 4: 2.25 in (5.7 cm) up from the base edge
- After Slot Row 9: 6.75 in (17.1 cm) up from the base edge
- After Lattice Round 16: 8.25 in (21.0 cm) up from the base edge
- After the top band: 9.75 in (24.8 cm) tall in total
If the base is too big, go down to a 3.25 mm hook. If it is too small, go up to a 3.75 mm hook. Keep your chains snug in the lattice, because loose arches add height quickly.

Base
Leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail. Join each round with a sl st in the first sc. The ch 1 at the start of a round does not count as a stitch.
Round 1: Ch 15. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 12 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate and work along the other side of the foundation chain: sc in next 12 ch, 2 sc in same ch as first sc. Join. (30 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 12, [2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12, [2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (36 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 12, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (42 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 12, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (48 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 12, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (54 sts)
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 12, [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12, [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (60 sts)
Round 7 (wall turn): Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around. Join. (60 sts) This leaves a crisp ridge and adds about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of height.
Reposition: Sl st in each of the next 13 sts, so your hook is on st 14. The long side you are on is now the front, and the slot will sit above sts 11–13, at its center.
Lattice Body
Lattice Round 1: Ch 1, LK in same st, [ch 6, sk 3 sts, LK in next st] 14 times, ch 2, sk 3 sts, tr in first sc. (15 LK, 15 loops)
Stitches used: 15 repeats x (1 LK st + 3 skipped) = 60, which matches Round 7.
Lattice Rounds 2–4: Ch 1, LK in the loop around the tr, [ch 6, LK in next loop] 14 times, ch 2, tr in first sc. (15 LK, 15 loops each round)
Each LK sits in the middle of an arch from the round below. The staggered arches meet top to bottom and form the rounded diamonds.
Place a marker in the final closing loop. It marks the bottom point of the slot.
Tissue Slot Section (Turned Rows)
Now you work back and forth so the front center stays open. Each row begins with a ch 4 that counts as the edge tr.
Slot Row 1 (RS, Type B): Ch 4 (counts as tr), ch 3, LK in next ch-6 loop, [ch 6, LK in next ch-6 loop] 13 times, ch 3, tr in marked closing loop. Turn. (14 LK, 13 ch-6, 2 ch-3 edge sps)
Both edge tr sit in the marked loop, so the bottom of the slot comes to a V point.
Slot Row 2 (WS, Type A): Ch 4 (counts as tr), ch 1, LK in ch-3 sp, [ch 6, LK in next sp] 14 times, ch 1, tr in top of turning ch. Turn. (15 LK, 14 ch-6, 2 ch-1 edge sps)
Slot Row 3 (RS, Type B): Ch 4, ch 3, LK in first ch-6 sp, [ch 6, LK in next ch-6 sp] 13 times, ch 3, tr in top of turning ch. Turn. (14 LK)
Slot Rows 4–9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 three more times. Row 9 is a Type B row; finish it but do not turn. (Row 9 = 14 LK)
Both row types span about 14 loop widths, so about one loop width is left open as the slot. The slot is 9 rows x 0.5 in = 4.5 in (11.4 cm) long.
Lattice Round 14 (closing round): Ch 6 for the bridge across the top of the slot. LK in first ch-3 sp of Row 9, [ch 6, LK in next ch-6 sp] 13 times, ch 6, LK in last ch-3 sp. Sl st in top of the edge tr where the bridge began. (15 LK; 14 ch-6 + bridge = 15 loops)
Sl st in each of the first 3 ch of the bridge to reach the middle of that loop.
Lattice Rounds 15–16: Ch 1, LK in same loop, [ch 6, LK in next loop] 14 times, ch 2, tr in first sc. (15 LK, 15 loops each)
Checkpoint: the piece is 8.25 in (21.0 cm) tall from the base edge and about 6 in (15.2 cm) across when flattened.
Top Band (Border)
The band is this piece’s border. It turns the open lattice back into a solid edge.
Border gauge: 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), so 60 sc = 12 in (30.5 cm). That is the same as the base circumference.
Band Round 1 (conversion): Ch 1, 3 sc in the loop around the tr, sc in ch-1 of next LK, [3 sc in next loop, sc in ch-1 of next LK] 14 times. Join. (45 sc worked into the 15 loops + 15 sc worked into the 15 LK ch-1 sps = 60 sts)
Band Rounds 2–8: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (60 sts each)
Counts per side: Flatten the holder with the slot centered on the front. Each band round has 30 sts across the front half and 30 sts across the back half, counting the turn at each curved end. 30 + 30 = 60.
Why the math works: The lattice used the base’s 60 sts as 15 repeats of 4. The band gives each repeat 4 sc again, so the rim matches the base and the tube stays straight instead of flaring. Eight band rounds add 1.5 in (3.8 cm), for 9.75 in (24.8 cm) in total.
Sl st in the next st and fasten off.
Strap
Skip the first 29 sts of the last band round and mark sts 30–34. These 5 sts are centered on the back.
Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn in st 30, ch 1, sc in same st and in next 4 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 2–40: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (5 sts each)
The strap is 1 in (2.5 cm) wide and 7.25 in (18.4 cm) long. Fold it toward the inside of the back band so the last 1.25 in (3.2 cm) overlaps the band. Whipstitch it in place from the inside. The loop stands about 3 in (7.6 cm) tall. To hang the holder, lift the headrest, slide the loop over one post and replace the headrest.
Slot Edging
Edging Round 1: With RS facing, join yarn at the top right corner of the slot. Work 6 sc across the underside of the bridge, 2 sc around each of the 9 edge-tr posts down the left side, 2 sc in the marked bottom loop, and 2 sc around each of the 9 edge-tr posts up the right side. Join. (6 + 18 + 2 + 18 = 44 sts)
Edging Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (44 sts) This builds the raised rim. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Final Blocking
- Soak the holder in cool water and press it in a towel. Do not wring it.
- Slip a 4.75 in x 2.25 in (12.1 cm x 5.7 cm) cardboard form or a rolled towel into the tube.
- Ease the arches so the diamonds open evenly and the knots line up in columns.
- Lay a pencil in the slot so the edging dries straight and 0.5 in (1.3 cm) wide.
- Pin the strap flat and let everything dry completely.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Base is 4.75 in x 2.25 in (12.1 cm x 5.7 cm) and lies flat
- Every lattice round has 15 LK and 15 loops
- Slot rows alternate 14 and 15 LK, 9 rows in all
- Slot is centered on the front and 4.5 in (11.4 cm) long
- Every band round has 60 sts
- Total height is 9.75 in (24.8 cm)
- Strap is 5 sts wide, centered on the back and secure
- Slot edging has 44 sts and lies flat
Troubleshooting
Base cups or ruffles: Recount the increases. Each round adds exactly 6.
Lattice spirals: Start each round in the loop around the tr.
Slot drifts sideways: Check the row types. Type B rows work only into the ch-6 sps.
Top flares: Go down half a hook size for the band.
Slot gapes: Work Edging Round 2 more snugly, or use sl sts.
Tissues stick: Add one more pair of slot rows.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Reshape the holder and dry it flat over a form.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other. The base finishes at 60 sts and 4.75 in x 2.25 in (12.1 cm x 5.7 cm). The lattice turns those sts into 15 repeats and grows 0.5 in (1.3 cm) per round to 8.25 in (21.0 cm), with a 4.5 in (11.4 cm) slot along the way. The band brings the count back to 60 and adds 1.5 in (3.8 cm), for 9.75 in (24.8 cm) in all.
Happy crocheting!
