Terracotta Lattice Two-Tier Hanging Basket Crochet Pattern

This two-tier hanging organizer has two oval baskets, one stacked above the other. Each basket has a solid single crochet base, a band of staggered V-stitch lattice around the middle of the wall, and a firm rim that holds a wooden dowel. Slip-stitch cords join the two tiers and form the hanging loop.

The sample uses one warm terracotta cotton cord. The color looks good against pale tile, warm wood, and greenery. The cord also gives each basket enough body to hold toiletries, a hairbrush, or two toilet rolls without sagging.

The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout. The lower basket measures about 11.75 in (29.8 cm) wide, 5 in (12.7 cm) deep, and 6 in (15.2 cm) tall. The upper basket measures about 9 in (22.9 cm) wide, 4.25 in (10.8 cm) deep, and 5 in (12.7 cm) tall. Hung up, the whole organizer is about 21 in (53.3 cm) from the hook to the bottom of the lower basket.

Each basket starts as an oval base worked in joined rounds. The walls go straight up: solid single crochet first, then the lattice, then a 3-round rim. In the last rim round you crochet over the dowel along the back wall. To finish, you tie three slip-stitch cords to the dowel ends.

Materials

Choose a smooth, firm cotton cord or a tightly braided cotton tube yarn. Soft, loosely spun cotton stretches under weight, and the baskets will droop over time. Cotton also holds its shape well in a humid bathroom. If you can, buy every skein from the same dye lot so the two baskets match.

  • Terracotta cotton cord: 280 g, about 150 m (164 yd)
  • Lower basket: about 80 m (87 yd)
  • Upper basket: about 55 m (60 yd)
  • Three cords: about 15 m (16 yd)

These quantities include a margin of about 10 percent for gauge differences, swatching, and tails.

Tools:

  • 6 mm (US J-10) crochet hook
  • 1 wooden dowel, 14 in (35.6 cm) long, 1/2 in (1.3 cm) diameter
  • 1 wooden dowel, 11 in (27.9 cm) long, 1/2 in (1.3 cm) diameter
  • Fine sandpaper (optional: 4 wooden end caps or large beads and wood glue for the dowel ends)
  • 6 stitch markers
  • Large-eye tapestry needle
  • Scissors and tape measure
  • A sturdy wall hook

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sp – space
  • sk – skip
  • inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – round(s)

Special stitch – V-stitch (V-st): (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch or space.

Beginning V-st: ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in the same stitch or space.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Single crochet gauge: 12 sc x 12 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)

Lattice gauge: 4 V-sts (12 base sts) x 6 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)

Make the upper basket first. It is the smaller piece, so it doubles as your gauge test. After Rnd 3 of the upper base (48 sts), the oval should be about 7 in (17.8 cm) long when laid flat without stretching.

Checkpoints:

  • Upper base after Rnd 6: 9 in (22.9 cm) long
  • Lower base after Rnd 7: 11.75 in (29.8 cm) long
  • Upper walls before rim: 4 in (10.2 cm) tall
  • Lower walls before rim: 5 in (12.7 cm) tall
  • Rim on each basket: 1 in (2.5 cm)

If your oval comes out more than 1/4 in (0.6 cm) too big, go down one hook size and start again. If it is too small, go up one size. A base with wavy edges means your gauge is loose. A base that cups upward means it is tight. For the lattice, adjust only how tightly you work the dc, then check that 6 lattice rounds measure 4 in (10.2 cm).

Ch 18.

Rnd 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 15 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate and work along the opposite side of the chain: sc in next 15 ch. Join with sl st to first sc. (36 sts: 3 per end, 15 per long side)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, [2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 15 sts] twice, join. (42 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, [(sc in next st, inc) 3 times, sc in next 15 sts] twice, join. (48 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, [(sc in next 2 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 15 sts] twice, join. (54 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, [(sc in next 3 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 15 sts] twice, join. (60 sts)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, [(sc in next 4 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 15 sts] twice, join. (66 sts: 18 per end, 15 per long side)

Checkpoint: 9 in (22.9 cm) long and about 4.25 in (10.8 cm) wide.

Solid Walls

Rnds 7–10: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (66 sts)

Work these rounds through both loops with no increases. The base will turn up into the walls with a soft, rounded bottom edge instead of a sharp ridge.

Staggered V-Stitch Lattice

Rnd 11: Beginning V-st in first st, sk 2 sts, V-st in next st; rep from * around, ending with sk 2 sts. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. (22 V-sts)*

Rnd 12: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, sl st in next dc. Beginning V-st in the sp between this V-st and the next V-st. V-st in next sp between V-sts; rep from * around, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. (22 V-sts)*

Rnds 13–14: Rep Rnd 12. (22 V-sts each round)

Each new V sits in the gap between two Vs in the round below. That gives you staggered rows of V shapes, with a diamond-shaped opening under each one.

Checkpoint: walls measure 4 in (10.2 cm) from the base edge. Keep the yarn attached and go on to the rim (Rnds 15–17) in the Border section.

Lower Basket

Oval Base

Ch 24.

Rnd 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 21 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the opposite side, sc in next 21 ch. Join. (48 sts: 3 per end, 21 per long side)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, [2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 21 sts] twice, join. (54 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, [(sc in next st, inc) 3 times, sc in next 21 sts] twice, join. (60 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, [(sc in next 2 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 21 sts] twice, join. (66 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, [(sc in next 3 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 21 sts] twice, join. (72 sts)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, [(sc in next 4 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 21 sts] twice, join. (78 sts)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, [(sc in next 5 sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 21 sts] twice, join. (84 sts: 21 per end, 21 per long side)

Checkpoint: 11.75 in (29.8 cm) long and about 5 in (12.7 cm) wide.

Solid Walls

Rnds 8–12: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (84 sts)

Staggered V-Stitch Lattice

Rnd 13: Beginning V-st in first st, sk 2 sts, V-st in next st; rep from * around, ending with sk 2 sts. Join. (28 V-sts)*

Rnds 14–17: Work as for upper basket Rnd 12. (28 V-sts each round)

Checkpoint: walls measure 5 in (12.7 cm) from the base edge. Go on to the rim (Rnds 18–20) in the Border section.

Make All Pieces

Every piece uses the same terracotta cord:

  • 1 upper basket (66-st rim)
  • 1 lower basket (84-st rim)
  • 1 hanging cord, 22 in (55.9 cm)
  • 2 side straps, 10 in (25.4 cm) each

Slip-stitch cord: Ch 66 for the hanging cord, or ch 30 for each side strap. Sl st in the back bump of 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (65 sl sts or 29 sl sts) Leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail at each end. Working into the back bump gives a round, rope-like cord that stretches very little.

   o=====[ UPPER BASKET ]=====o   11 in dowel

   | |
 o======[ LOWER BASKET ]=======o  14 in dowel

Joining

Join the pieces only after both rims are finished and the dowels are in place.

  1. Hanging cord: Wrap one end of the 22 in (55.9 cm) cord twice around the left end of the 11 in (27.9 cm) dowel, about 1/2 in (1.3 cm) in from the tip. Tie it off and stitch the tail back through the cord. Repeat on the right end. Each wrap uses about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) of cord.
  2. Side straps: Wrap the top of one strap around the upper dowel end, right next to the hanging cord. Wrap the bottom of the same strap around the matching end of the 14 in (35.6 cm) dowel. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Logic: The cords attach to the dowel ends, not to the crochet fabric. The load passes from the lower dowel to the upper dowel and up to the hook, so the walls never get pulled out of shape.

Tension: Wrap firmly, but don’t pull so hard that the cord flattens. Hang the organizer and check that both dowels are level. If one side sits low, loosen that wrap and slide it a little.

Size checkpoint: The upper dowel should hang about 8 in (20.3 cm) below the hook. The lower dowel should sit 7 in (17.8 cm) below the upper dowel, which leaves a gap of about 2 in (5.1 cm) under the upper basket.

Border

On this project the “border” is the 3-round rim on each basket. It firms up the top edge and holds the dowel.

Rim gauge: 12 sc x 12 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm), so 3 rounds = 1 in (2.5 cm).

Upper Basket Rim

Rnd 15 (conversion): Ch 1, sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp around. Do not work into the spaces between V-sts. Join. (44 sc in dc + 22 sc in sps = 66 sts)

Rnd 16: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (66 sts)

Flatten the basket. Place a marker at each end of the 15 sts centered along the back long side.

Rnd 17 (dowel round): Ch 1, sc to the first marked st. Hold the 11 in (27.9 cm) dowel along the top edge, centered. Work the next 15 sc over the dowel so it is enclosed. Sc in each remaining st, join, and fasten off with an invisible join. (66 sts)

Per side: 15 back, 15 front, 18 each end.

Lower Basket Rim

Rnd 18 (conversion): Ch 1, sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp around, join. (56 sc in dc + 28 sc in sps = 84 sts)

Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (84 sts)

Mark the 21 sts centered along the back.

Rnd 20 (dowel round): Ch 1, sc to the first marked st, then work 21 sc over the 14 in (35.6 cm) dowel. Sc to the end, join, and fasten off. (84 sts)

Per side: 21 back, 21 front, 21 each end.

Why the math works: Each V-st takes up 3 base stitches: the stitch it sits in plus the 2 skipped. In the conversion round, each V-st gives back 3 places to work: 2 dc plus 1 ch-1 sp. So 22 V-sts x 3 = 66 and 28 V-sts x 3 = 84, and each rim matches its base exactly. That keeps the walls straight, without ruffling or pulling in. The 11 in (27.9 cm) dowel is 2 in (5.1 cm) longer than the upper basket, and the 14 in (35.6 cm) dowel is 2.25 in (5.7 cm) longer than the lower basket. That leaves about 1 in (2.5 cm) sticking out on each side for the cords.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all tails along the inside of the solid sc rounds, where they won’t show through the lattice.
  2. Mist each basket lightly with water until it is damp but not wet.
  3. Fill each basket with a folded towel so the oval shape is even and the walls stand up.
  4. Gently tug the lattice upward so the diamond openings line up.
  5. Let the baskets dry completely, at least 24 hours.
  6. Remove the towels, attach the cords, and hang.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Upper base: 66 sts, 9 in (22.9 cm) long
  • Lower base: 84 sts, 11.75 in (29.8 cm) long
  • Lattice counts: 22 and 28 V-sts every round
  • Rim counts: 66 and 84 sts
  • Each dowel is enclosed along the full back section: 15 and 21 sts
  • Dowel ends stick out evenly, about 1 in (2.5 cm) on each side
  • Cord wraps are tied off and the tails are sewn in
  • Both dowels hang level and the baskets don’t tilt

Troubleshooting

  • Base ruffles: Your tension is too loose for the increase rate. Use a smaller hook or crochet more firmly.
  • Base cups: Your tension is too tight. Go up a hook size.
  • Lattice count drifts: You missed a gap between Vs, or worked twice into one gap. Count the Vs after every round.
  • Ends look pointy: Stacked increases cause this. Move the increase spot over by one stitch on alternate rounds.
  • Basket tilts forward: The dowel is not centered. Rework Rnd 17 or Rnd 20 so the same amount sticks out on each side.
  • Cords slip on the dowel: Glue on end caps or beads, or add a third wrap.

Care

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. To wash the baskets fully, remove the dowels, hand wash in cool water, reshape, and dry flat.

Final Notes

Each measurement builds on the one before it. The bases measure 9 in (22.9 cm) and 11.75 in (29.8 cm) long. The walls rise 4 in (10.2 cm) and 5 in (12.7 cm) through the lattice. The 1 in (2.5 cm) rims bring the baskets to 5 in (12.7 cm) and 6 in (15.2 cm) tall. Finally, the cords set the total hanging height at about 21 in (53.3 cm). Check each number as you reach it, and the finished organizer will hang straight and hold its shape.

Happy crocheting!
