The Olive Grove panel is a light, airy filet curtain in soft sage green. A single olive branch climbs up the center. Leaves angle out from the stem on alternating sides, and each leaf has a small round olive opposite it. The open mesh around the motif lets in daylight, and the filled squares stand out clearly against the window.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. One finished panel measures 34.5 in x 78.5 in (87.6 cm x 199.4 cm) after blocking, including a narrow single crochet border. A pair is shown, so make a second panel exactly like the first. The two panels hang separately and are never joined.
You work the panel flat in rows from the bottom up. It starts with one solid row and a few rows of open mesh, then the branch is built from a 24-row repeat worked 7 times, followed by a short stem tip. More open mesh and a solid row finish the top, and two rounds of single crochet tidy every edge.
The design uses only filled squares and open squares, so the motif is given as a list of filled squares for each row. That’s easy to follow from a single page.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 34.5 in x 78.5 in (87.6 cm x 199.4 cm) per panel
- Skill level: Intermediate (simple stitches, careful counting)
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Super Fine (#1) fingering-weight cotton
- Hook: 2.75 mm (C/2)
- Number of pieces: 1 per panel (make 2 separate panels for a pair)
- Layout: 85 squares wide x 195 rows tall
- Square size: 0.4 in (1.0 cm)
- Size before border: 34 in x 78 in (86.4 cm x 198.1 cm)
- Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on each side
Materials
Yarn: Use a smooth mercerized or matte cotton in fingering weight, about 186 yd (170 m) per 50 g. Cotton holds the crisp square grid and stands up to sunlight and washing. Avoid fuzzy yarns, which blur the motif.
- Sage green: 400 g / 1360 m per panel (800 g / 2720 m for a pair)
Tools:
- 2.75 mm (C/2) crochet hook
- Locking stitch markers (at least 10)
- Tapestry needle
- Measuring tape
- Rust-proof pins and blocking mats or a clean carpet covered with a sheet
- Spray bottle
- Curtain clip rings for hanging (optional)
These quantities include a margin of about 15% for the gauge swatch, tension differences, and dye-lot security. Buy every ball for one panel from the same dye lot.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sk – skip
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
Special stitches:
- Open square (OS): ch 2, sk 2 sts (or the ch-2 sp), dc in next dc.
- Filled square (FS): dc in next 2 sts (or 2 dc in the ch-2 sp), dc in next dc.
Each row starts with ch 3, which counts as the first dc. That dc is the left post of square 1 as you begin the row. Each square then adds 3 sts, and the last dc goes into the top of the turning ch. Every row has 1 + (85 x 3) = 256 sts, counting each ch-2 as 2 sts.
Square numbering: With the RS facing, squares are numbered 1 to 85 from right to left. On odd (RS) rows, the first square you work is square 1. On even (WS) rows, the first square you work is square 85. The center stem, square 43, sits in the same place from both directions because 85 is odd.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 5 squares and 5 rows = 2 in (5.1 cm) in filet mesh, after blocking.
Test swatch: Ch 48. Dc in the 4th ch from the hook and in each ch across. The 3 skipped chains count as 1 dc, for 46 sts (15 squares). Work 14 more rows of open squares. Wet block the swatch and let it dry. It should measure 6 in x 6 in (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm).
- Swatch too big: Go down 0.25 mm in hook size.
- Swatch too small: Go up 0.25 mm in hook size.
If only the height is off, adjust how far you pull up the dc loops rather than changing the hook.
Checkpoints (unblocked work may read 2–3% short):
- After Row 1: width 34 in (86.4 cm)
- After Row 11: height 4.4 in (11.2 cm)
- After Row 35 (first repeat): height 14 in (35.6 cm)
- After Row 107 (fourth repeat): height 42.8 in (108.7 cm)
- After Row 179 (seventh repeat): height 71.6 in (181.9 cm)
- After Row 195: 34 in x 78 in (86.4 cm x 198.1 cm)
If the width is off by more than 1 in (2.5 cm) at Row 11, start over with a different hook. Filet does not ease into size well during blocking.

Panel Pattern
Foundation: Ch 258.
Row 1 (RS, solid): Dc in the 4th ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (256 sts: 85 FS)
Rows 2–11 (open mesh): Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work an OS 85 times across. Turn. (256 sts: 85 OS)
On Row 2, each OS skips 2 dc of the solid row. On later rows, it skips the ch-2 sp.
Olive Branch Repeat (24 rows)
Work the 24 repeat rows below 7 times in total, for Rows 12–179. Repeat row R in repeat k is panel row 11 + 24(k − 1) + R. In each row, work the listed squares as FS and every other square as OS. Every row is 256 sts.
Place a marker in square 43 on Row 12 and move it up every few rows so the stem stays centered.
- R1: 43–44
- R2: 43–46
- R3: 43–48
- R4: 37–38; 43; 46–50
- R5: 36–43; 47–52
- R6: 35–40; 43; 49–53
- R7: 35–40; 43; 50–54
- R8: 36–39; 43; 52–54
- R9: 37–38; 43; 53–54
- R10–R12: 43
- R13: 42–43
- R14: 40–43
- R15: 38–43
- R16: 36–40; 43; 48–49
- R17: 34–39; 43–50
- R18: 33–37; 43; 46–51
- R19: 32–36; 43; 46–51
- R20: 32–34; 43; 47–50
- R21: 32–33; 43; 48–49
- R22–R24: 43
What these rows build:
- Right leaf (R1–R9): It starts against the stem and steps up and to the right, ending in a point at squares 53–54.
- Left olive (R4–R9): It is a round shape up to 6 squares wide, with a short stalk in R5 joining it to the stem.
- Left leaf and right olive (R13–R21): These mirror the first half exactly. Square n becomes square 86 − n.
Each repeat uses 148 filled squares (74 in each half). It is 24 rows tall, or 9.6 in (24.4 cm), and the motif spans squares 32–54, a width of 9.2 in (23.4 cm).
Count check: On a row with FS 46–50, you work 45 OS, 5 FS, 1 OS (square 43 aside, as listed), and so on. The total is always 85 squares and 256 sts. Count squares, not individual stitches, at the end of each row.
Stem Tip
- Rows 180–181: FS 42–44; all others OS.
- Rows 182–183: FS 43; all others OS.
Top Mesh and Top Edge
- Rows 184–194: Work an OS 85 times across. (256 sts)
- Row 195 (solid): Ch 3, then work an FS 85 times across, working 2 dc in each ch-2 sp. (256 sts)
Don’t fasten off. Continue straight into the border.
Border
Border gauge: 7.5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm). This matches the panel exactly. Across the top and bottom, 256 sts span 34 in, which is 7.5 sts per in. Each dc row-end is 0.4 in tall, so 3 sc per row-end also gives 7.5 sc per in.
Because both directions match, the border lies flat. It won’t ruffle or pull in.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, then work around the panel:
- Top edge: 3 sc in the first st (corner), sc in the next 254 sts, 3 sc in the last st (corner).
- First long side: Work 3 sc in each of the 195 row-ends (585 sc).
- Bottom edge: Work into the free loops of the foundation chain. Work 3 sc in the first ch (corner), sc in the next 254 ch, 3 sc in the last ch (corner).
- Second long side: Work 3 sc in each of the 195 row-ends (585 sc).
- Sl st to the first sc.
Per-side counts, including both corner-center sc:
- Top and bottom: 1 + 1 + 254 + 1 + 1 = 258 sc
- Long sides: 1 + 1 + 585 + 1 + 1 = 589 sc
- Total: 2 x (258 + 589) − 4 shared corners = 1690 sc
Round 2: Ch 1, then sc in each sc around. Work 3 sc in each corner-center sc. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off.
Each side gains 2 sc:
- Top and bottom: 260 sc
- Long sides: 591 sc
- Total: 1690 + 8 = 1698 sc
Why the math works: The border starts from the panel’s own stitch counts, so no stitches are added on the straight edges. The only extras are at the 4 corners: 8 in Round 1 (2 per corner beyond the stitch worked into) and 8 in Round 2. Two rounds add 0.25 in (0.6 cm) to each edge. That gives 34 + 0.5 = 34.5 in (87.6 cm) and 78 + 0.5 = 78.5 in (199.4 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along filled squares or inside the border, never across open mesh.
- Soak the panel in cool water with a little wool wash or mild soap for 15 minutes.
- Press out the water without wringing. Roll the panel in towels to remove more moisture.
- Lay it flat on mats or a sheet-covered carpet with the RS up.
- Pin the 4 corners to 34.5 in x 78.5 in (87.6 cm x 199.4 cm), and check that the diagonals are equal.
- Pin along each long side every 4 in (10.2 cm), then add pins between them.
- Smooth the squares along the stem so the stem runs straight. Use a long ruler down square 43.
- Mist any dry areas and leave the panel to dry completely, about 24–48 hours.
- Repeat for the second panel, pinning it to the same outline so the pair matches.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every row has 85 squares, and the side edges are straight.
- The stem sits in square 43 from Row 12 to Row 183.
- All 7 leaf pairs and olives mirror each other cleanly.
- Leaf tips reach squares 53–54 on the right and 32–33 on the left.
- Border Round 2 counts are 260 / 591 / 260 / 591.
- The corners are square and lie flat.
- The blocked size is 34.5 in x 78.5 in (87.6 cm x 199.4 cm).
- Both panels match in length to within 0.5 in (1.3 cm).
- No ends show through the open mesh.
Troubleshooting
- Leaves look reversed or the olive is on the wrong side: You probably read a WS row from the wrong end. On WS rows, square 85 is worked first. Frog back to the first wrong row.
- Stem drifts sideways: A square was added or dropped. Count to square 43 from both edges, then fix the row.
- Panel getting narrower: Turning chains are too tight, or the last dc is going into the wrong place. Always finish in the top of the turning ch-3.
- Rows too short: Pull the dc loops up a little taller, or check your gauge on the swatch.
- Border ruffles: Use 2 sc in every 3rd row-end instead of 3 sc, and redo the counts.
- Border pulls in: Use a hook 0.25 mm larger for the border only.
- Mesh skews diagonally: This is common in long panels. Block it firmly, pinning the long sides straight.
Care
Hand wash cool or machine wash on a gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag. Then dry flat, re-pinning the panel to size if needed. Turn the panels now and then to limit uneven fading from the sun.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple:
- 0.4 in (1.0 cm) squares, 85 across, give a 34 in (86.4 cm) width.
- 195 rows give a 78 in (198.1 cm) length.
- Two border rounds add 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on every edge, for a finished 34.5 in x 78.5 in (87.6 cm x 199.4 cm) panel.
Check gauge first, count squares rather than stitches, and keep the stem centered on square 43. The olive branch will then build itself one row at a time.
Happy crocheting!
