This little crown is a lace Christmas ornament worked in one piece in ivory cotton thread. It is a true 3D ring that stands up on its own. Tiny five-petal flowers circle the base, and five pointed peaks rise above them. Each peak has an open fan with a small arch at its base and finishes with a tiny flower at the tip.
The whole crown is one color, a warm cream or ivory. This shade gives the soft look of vintage lace against tree lights. After starching, the crown holds its shape. It hangs from a fine chain loop on one top flower.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished crown is about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across, 11 in (27.9 cm) around, and 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall, not counting the hanging loop.
First, chain a ring and work six joined rounds to make the base band, including the flower round. Then work the five peaks in short rows, one at a time, straight off the top of the band. A two-part border neatens the bottom edge and outlines the peaks. Finally, stiffen the crown and block it over a round form.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) diameter, 11 in (27.9 cm) circumference, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Size 3 cotton crochet thread
- Hook: 2.25 mm (US B-1)
- Number of pieces: 1 (one continuous ring with five peaks)
- Layout: 10 band flowers in one ring; 5 peaks, each sitting above 2 flowers
- Piece size: each peak is 2.2 in (5.6 cm) wide at its base
- Size before border: 11 in (27.9 cm) around, 2.65 in (6.7 cm) tall
- Border depth: about 0.1 in (0.3 cm) total, top and bottom combined
Materials
Use a mercerized cotton thread in size 3. It has a slight sheen, shows stitches clearly, and takes starch well. Avoid acrylic, because it will not hold a stiffened shape.
- Ivory / cream: 8 g, about 27 m (30 yd), based on thread of roughly 170 m per 50 g
Tools:
- 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle with a small eye
- 2 locking stitch markers
- Fabric stiffener or thick starch
- A round form about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across, such as a small glass or can, wrapped in plastic wrap
- Rustproof pins
- Measuring tape
The quantity above includes about a 25% margin for the gauge swatch and the hanging loop. The crown itself uses about 6 g.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- dc – double crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet (yarn over 3 times, then work off loops in pairs)
- sp / lp – space / loop
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
Special stitches:
- 2-dc cluster (cl): Yarn over, insert hook in ring, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat once more in the same ring. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
- Petal: Ch 2, 2-dc cl in ring, ch 2, sl st in ring.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 20 sc = 2.75 in (7.0 cm) with a 2.25 mm hook. Gauge sets the circumference, so check it before you start the ring.
Swatch first: Ch 21. Sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch across (20 sc). Work 3 more rows, then measure the width. Change hook size until the swatch is 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide.
Checkpoints:
- After Rnd 2: the ring is 11 in (27.9 cm) around, or 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide laid flat. The band is 0.25 in (0.6 cm) tall.
- After Rnd 3: the flower band is about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) tall.
- After Rnd 6: the base band is 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall.
- After each peak: 2.2 in (5.6 cm) wide at the base. It is 1.0 in (2.5 cm) tall in rows, or 1.4 in (3.6 cm) including the tip flower.
If the ring is too big, go down a hook size. If it is too small, go up a hook size. Never add or remove stitches. The flowers need a multiple of 8 stitches and the peaks need a multiple of 16.

Base Band
Foundation: Ch 80. Join with a sl st to the first ch without twisting the chain.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to first sc. (80 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc. (80 sc)
Check that the ring is 11 in (27.9 cm) around.
Flower Round
Each flower is built on a small chain ring that is anchored to the band between two tall dtr posts. Each 8-stitch repeat holds one post and one flower.
Rnd 3: Ch 5 (counts as first dtr in this st).
- *Ch 3, skip next 3 sc, sl st in next sc. This is the anchor.
- Ch 5, then sl st in the same anchor sc to form a small ring.
- Work 5 Petals into this ring. Petal 3 sits at the top of the flower; mark its cluster.
- Ch 3, skip next 3 sc, dtr in next sc.*
Repeat from * to * 9 more times. On the last repeat, work a sl st in the top of the beginning ch-5 instead of the last dtr.
Count: 10 dtr posts (including the beginning ch-5), 10 five-petal flowers (50 petals), and 20 ch-3 sps.
Stand each flower upright so its top petal points up between the posts.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in top of same post. Ch 3, sc in top of the marked petal 3 cluster, ch 3, sc in top of next dtr. Repeat around, leaving out the last sc, and sl st to first sc.
Count: 20 sc + 20 ch-3 sps (60 ch) = 80 sts.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in sc, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp. Repeat around, sl st to first sc.
Count: 20 sc worked into sc + 60 sc worked into ch-3 sps = 80 sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc. (80 sc) Fasten off.
The base band is now 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall, with a double ridge above the flowers.
Peaks
Divide Rnd 6 into 5 sections of 16 sts, starting at a st directly above a post. Peak 1 uses sts 1–16, Peak 2 uses sts 17–32, and so on. Each peak sits above 2 flowers.
Row 1 (RS): Join with a sc in st 1. Ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in st 4. Ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in st 7. Ch 4, skip 2 sts, sc in st 10; this ch-4 is the center arch. Ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in st 13. Ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in st 16.
Count: 6 sc, 4 ch-2 sps, 1 ch-4 arch.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc, ch 3, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-2 sp. Ch 2, 9 dc in ch-4 arch, ch 2. Sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in last sc.
Count: 6 sc, 9 dc, 4 ch-3 sps, 2 ch-2 sps.
Row 3: Turn, sl st in first sc and into first ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp. Ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp. (Dc in next dc, ch 1) 8 times, dc in last dc. Ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in last ch-3 sp.
Count: 4 sc, 9 dc, 8 ch-1 sps, 2 ch-3 sps, 2 ch-2 sps. The fan is now open, with the small arch below it.
Row 4: Turn, sl st in first sc and into first ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp. Ch 4, skip ch-2 sp, sc in 2nd ch-1 sp of fan. Ch 4, sc in 5th (center) dc. Ch 4, sc in 7th ch-1 sp. Ch 4, skip ch-2 sp, sc in last ch-3 sp.
Count: 5 sc, 4 ch-4 lps.
Row 5: Turn, sl st in first lp, ch 1, sc in same lp. (Ch 4, sc in next lp) 3 times. Count: 4 sc, 3 ch-4 lps.
Row 6: Turn, sl st in first lp, ch 1, sc in same lp. (Ch 4, sc in next lp) 2 times. Count: 3 sc, 2 ch-4 lps.
Row 7: Turn, sl st in first lp, ch 1, sc in same lp, ch 3, sc in last lp. Count: 2 sc, 1 ch-3 lp.
Row 8 (tip and flower): Turn, sl st in lp, ch 1, sc in lp; this is the tip sc. Ch 6, then sl st in 5th ch from hook to form a ring, leaving 1 ch as a stem. Work 5 Petals into the ring. Sl st in stem ch, sl st in tip sc. Fasten off.
Repeat Rows 1–8 on each of the other 4 sections. (5 peaks)
Check that each peak is 2.2 in (5.6 cm) wide at the base and 1.4 in (3.6 cm) tall including its flower.
Hanging loop: Pick one peak as the front. Join thread at the top petal of its tip flower, ch 36, and sl st in the same petal. Fasten off. The loop hangs about 1.75 in (4.4 cm) above the flower.
Border
Border gauge: about 11 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm) along the peak edges, so the edges lie flat without ruffling.
Border Rnd A (bottom edge): With RS facing, join in any free loop of the foundation chain. Ch 1, sc in each foundation loop around, sl st to first sc. (80 sc) Fasten off.
Border Rnd A matches Rnd 1 stitch for stitch, so the bottom stays 11 in (27.9 cm) around.
Border Rnd B (peak outline): With RS facing, join at the Row 1 row-end on the right side of Peak 1. For each peak:
- Up the side (11 sc): 2 sc in each row-end of Rows 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, then 1 sc in the Row 7 row-end.
- Tip (1 sc): 1 sc in the Row 8 tip sc, behind the flower stem.
- Down the side (11 sc): repeat the up-side placement in reverse order.
- Valley (1 sc2tog): work sc2tog over the Row 1 row-end of this peak and the Row 1 row-end of the next peak.
Repeat for all 5 peaks, then sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Count per peak: 11 + 1 + 11 = 23 sc, plus 1 sc2tog in its valley. Total: (23 × 5) + 5 = 120 sts.
Why the math works: Rows 2–6 on each side of a peak are dc or chain-lattice rows. Each is about twice as tall as an sc row, so it gets 2 sc. Row 7 is short and gets 1 sc. That puts 11 sc along each diagonal edge of about 1.0 in (2.5 cm), which matches the border gauge. The sc2tog in each valley pulls the peaks cleanly apart without adding bulk.
The crown is now 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along the solid bands, not through the flowers.
- Wrap the 3.5 in (8.9 cm) round form in plastic wrap.
- Soak the crown in stiffener, squeeze out the excess, and blot it in a towel until no film is left in the holes.
- Slide the crown onto the form so the bottom edge sits level.
- Open each band flower so its petals spread evenly and the center hole is clear.
- Pin each peak upright and shape each fan into an even half circle.
- Pin the tip flowers flat, facing outward.
- Check that the crown is 11 in (27.9 cm) around and 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall.
- Let it dry overnight, then remove it from the form.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- 80 sc in Rnds 1, 2, 5 and 6, and in Border Rnd A
- 10 dtr posts and 10 five-petal flowers in Rnd 3
- 5 peaks, each on 16 sts, with a 9-dc fan above a ch-4 arch
- 5 tip flowers, with the hanging loop on one of them
- 120 sts in Border Rnd B
- Circumference 11 in (27.9 cm), height 2.75 in (7.0 cm)
- The crown stands level without leaning
Troubleshooting
- Ring twisted: Check the foundation chain before Rnd 1. A twist cannot be fixed later.
- Flowers tilt: Make sure Rnd 4 goes into petal 3, then block the flowers upright.
- Band ruffles above the flowers: Check that Rnd 5 has exactly 3 sc in each ch-3 sp. Also make sure your dtr posts are not too tight.
- Peaks lean: Row 1 started off-center. Recount the 16-st sections from a post.
- Fan cups: Keep the Row 3 ch-1 sps relaxed and block the fan flat.
- Wavy peak edges: Too many sc. Keep to 11 per side.
- Crown droops: Apply more stiffener and let it dry fully on the form.
Care
Dust gently with a soft brush. If needed, hand wash in cool water, then starch it again and re-block it over the same 3.5 in (8.9 cm) form.

Final Notes
Each measurement in this pattern builds on the one before:
- A gauge of 20 sc = 2.75 in (7.0 cm) gives an 80-stitch ring 11 in (27.9 cm) around.
- Ten 8-stitch repeats hold the ten flowers, and five 16-stitch sections hold the five peaks.
- The base band is 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall, and each peak adds 1.4 in (3.6 cm).
- The border brings the crown to 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall.
If each checkpoint matches, the crown will come out right.
Happy crocheting!
