Woodland Acorn Trio Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

This hanging holder stacks three acorn-shaped pods on one olive strap, and each pod holds one standard roll of toilet paper. The bodies are worked in waistcoat stitch, which makes a dense, knit-look fabric of vertical columns. Each pod narrows to a rounded point at the bottom, like a real acorn.

The colors are simple: warm olive green for the bodies and strap, and soft cream for the textured acorn-cap rims. A plain wooden ring at the top lets you hang the piece from a robe or towel hook, so it suits a cottage, farmhouse, or woodland-themed bathroom.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished holder measures about 26.75 in (67.9 cm) from the strap fold to the tip of the lowest pod, or about 29 in (73.7 cm) including the ring. Each pod is about 5.1 in (13.0 cm) across the body and 5.75 in (14.6 cm) tall.

Construction is straightforward. You crochet three pods from the tip up in a spiral and add a cream crunch-stitch rim to each. Then you crochet one long strap in rows, fold it over the ring, and sew the pods to the strap at measured points.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished length: 26.75 in (67.9 cm) from strap fold to bottom tip; about 29 in (73.7 cm) with ring
  • Skill level: Easy-intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4)
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Number of pieces: 4 crocheted pieces (3 pods + 1 strap), plus a purchased ring
  • Layout: 3 pods stacked vertically on one strap, 8.5 in (21.6 cm) from rim top to rim top
  • Pod size: 5.1 in (13.0 cm) across, 5.75 in (14.6 cm) tall
  • Pod size before rim: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall, 16 in (40.6 cm) around
  • Rim (border) depth: 1.25 in (3.2 cm), 5 rounds
  • Strap: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide, 26 in (66.0 cm) long before folding

Each pod fits a standard roll about 4.5 in (11.4 cm) across and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall. The top of the roll shows above the rim.

Materials

Choose a smooth worsted-weight yarn with good stitch definition. Cotton or a cotton-acrylic blend holds the pod shape best. Pure acrylic also works but is a little softer. The quantities below assume yarn of about 180 m per 100 g.

  • Olive green (MC): 150 g, about 270 m (pods and strap)
  • Cream (CC): 45 g, about 80 m (rims)

These quantities include a margin of roughly 15% for testing gauge and for differences in tension.

Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Wooden ring, 2.5 in (6.4 cm) outer diameter
– 2 stitch markers, plus 6 locking markers for the strap
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors and tape measure
– Spray bottle and 3 rolls of toilet paper (used as blocking forms)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • inc – 2 sts in the same st
  • BLO – back loop only
  • MC / CC – main color / contrast color
  • Rnd(s) – round(s)

Waistcoat stitch (wsc): Insert your hook through the center of the V of the next stitch, between its two vertical legs (not under the top loops). Yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops. The stitch looks like knitting and stacks into vertical columns. A wsc inc is 2 wsc worked into the center of the same stitch.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Body gauge: 15 sts and 17 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in waistcoat stitch worked in the round.

Strap gauge: 6 sc = 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide; 16 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).

Waistcoat stitch is hard to swatch in rows, so make one pod first as your test. Work it through Rnd 16, measure, and continue checking at these points:

  • After Rnd 6: 24 sts, about 6.4 in (16.3 cm) around
  • After Rnd 12: 60 sts, 16 in (40.6 cm) around
  • After Rnd 22: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall, measured straight from tip to top edge
  • After Rnd 27: 5.75 in (14.6 cm) tall; a roll should slide in with light resistance

If the pod is too small and the roll will not go in, go up to a 5.5 mm (I-9) hook. If the pod is too big and the roll drops in loosely or the body is floppy, go down to a 4.5 mm (US 7) hook. Waistcoat stitch tightens quickly, so try loosening your grip before you change hooks.

Pod (Make 3)

Work in a continuous spiral with MC. Place a marker in the first st of each round and move it up as you go.

Rnds 1–4 are standard sc. From Rnd 5 on, work every sc as waistcoat stitch (wsc).

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  • Rnd 2: Sc in each st around. (6)
  • Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 3 times. (9)
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 3 times. (12)

These slow early rounds form the pointed acorn tip.

  • Rnd 5: [Wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (18)
  • Rnd 6: [2 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (24)
  • Rnd 7: [3 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (30)
  • Rnd 8: [4 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (36)
  • Rnd 9: [5 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (42)
  • Rnd 10: [6 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (48)
  • Rnd 11: [7 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (54)
  • Rnd 12: [8 wsc, wsc inc] 6 times. (60)

Check: 16 in (40.6 cm) around. The piece should look like a shallow, pointed bowl.

  • Rnds 13–22: Wsc in each st around. (60)

These are 10 even rounds. The sides rise and the body rounds out into the acorn’s belly. At the end of Rnd 22, change to CC on the last yarn over. Cut MC, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail to weave in.

Check: the body is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall. Mark the spiral jog with a scrap of contrasting thread. This side becomes the back of the pod, and the strap will cover it.

Now work the cream rim on this pod (see Border: Cream Acorn-Cap Rim below). Then make the other two pods the same way.

Strap (Make 1)

With MC, ch 7.

  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (6)
  • Rows 2–104: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, sc in each st across. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. The strap measures 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide and 26 in (66.0 cm) long. Plain sc through both loops keeps it firm, so it will not stretch under the weight of three rolls.

Make All Pieces

Piece Quantity Color
Pod body (Rnds 1–22) 3 MC
Pod rim (Rnds 23–27) 3 CC
Strap (104 rows) 1 MC

Before joining, place locking markers on the strap at rows 25, 36, 59, 70, 93, and 104. Count rows from the starting-chain end (row 1).

Layout grid (strap rows, top to bottom):

        ( wooden ring )
 Rows 1–16 folded over ring (4 in / 10.2 cm, doubles to 2 in / 5.1 cm)
 Rows 17–24 open strap (2 in / 5.1 cm)
 Rows 25–36 POD 1 sewn here (3 in / 7.6 cm)
 Rows 37–58 behind pod 1 + gap
 Rows 59–70 POD 2 sewn here (3 in / 7.6 cm)
 Rows 71–92 behind pod 2 + gap
Rows 93–104 POD 3 sewn here (3 in / 7.6 cm), strap ends

The rim tops sit at rows 25, 59, and 93, exactly 34 rows apart. At 16 rows per 4 in (10.2 cm), that is 8.5 in (21.6 cm) from rim to rim. With a pod height of 5.75 in (14.6 cm), the visible gap between pods is 2.75 in (7.0 cm).

Joining

Ring: Slide the ring onto the strap. Fold the strap between rows 8 and 9 so the ring sits inside the fold and row 1 lies on top of row 16. Whipstitch row 1 to row 16 across the width (6 sts to 6 sts). Then whipstitch the side edges together row for row, matching rows 1–8 to rows 16–9. The doubled section is 2 in (5.1 cm) long.

Pods: Sew each pod to the outside of its back so the strap lies between the pod and the wall. Center the strap over the marked spiral jog.

Match one strap row to one pod round:

  • Line up strap row 25 (or 59, or 93) with the top edge of the rim (Rnd 27).
  • The 12 strap rows then match pod Rnds 27 down to 16: 5 cream rounds (27–23) plus 7 olive rounds (22–16), for 12 rows to 12 rounds.
  • The 6 strap sts cover 6 vertical columns of the pod. That is about 1.6 in (4.1 cm) of the body’s circumference, close to the strap’s 1.5 in (3.8 cm) width.

Whipstitch both long edges of the strap to the pod, one stitch per row. Then sew a straight line of running stitch across the strap at the rim top and at row 36 (or 70, or 104) to lock it in place. On pod 3, this last line also secures the end of the strap.

Tension: Pull each whipstitch snug enough to close the seam, but not so tight that the pod puckers. The strap should lie flat against the pod with no rippling.

Size checkpoint: Hang the holder from the ring. The distance from the fold to the rim top of pod 3 should be 21 in (53.3 cm). That is the 2 in (5.1 cm) doubled loop, plus 2 in (5.1 cm) of open strap, plus two spacings of 8.5 in (21.6 cm).

Border: Cream Acorn-Cap Rim

The rim is the “border” of each pod. Work it directly onto the live top edge of each pod after Rnd 22, before any joining.

Rim gauge: 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm) and 4 rnds = 1 in (2.5 cm) in crunch stitch.

Think of the pod’s top edge as 6 equal sections of 10 sts. They line up with the 6 increase columns from Rnd 12.

  • Rnd 23 (conversion round): With CC, working in BLO, [9 sc, inc] 6 times. That is 60 sts worked 1 per existing st + 6 extra sts = 66. Each section now has 11 sts. Sl st in the first st to join. (66)

Working in BLO leaves a fine olive ridge at the color change, like the line where an acorn meets its cap.

  • Rnd 24: Ch 1 (does not count), [sl st, hdc] 33 times. Join with sl st in first st. (66)
  • Rnd 25: Ch 1, [hdc in sl st, sl st in hdc] 33 times. Join. (66)
  • Rnd 26: Ch 1, [sl st in hdc, hdc in sl st] 33 times. Join. (66)
  • Rnd 27: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st in first sc. (66)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Per-section counts: 10 sts per section before the rim, 11 sts per section in every rim round. Six sections give 66 sts in total.

Why the math works: 66 is an even number, so the [sl st, hdc] pairs come out exactly (33 pairs) with no half repeat at the join. It also divides by 6, so the 6 extra sts in Rnd 23 fall evenly on the increase columns and the rim flares smoothly.

Crunch stitch is tighter than waistcoat stitch. At 16 sts per 4 in (10.2 cm), 66 crunch sts measure 16.5 in (41.9 cm) around, just a little wider than the 16 in (40.6 cm) body. That gives the gentle cap overhang, about 5.25 in (13.3 cm) across. Five rounds at 4 rnds per inch give the 1.25 in (3.2 cm) rim depth.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends securely, especially at the strap fold and the pod attachments.
  2. Put a roll of toilet paper into each pod.
  3. Mist the pods lightly with water until damp, not soaking.
  4. Shape the tips into neat points and smooth the vertical columns with your fingers so they run straight.
  5. Gently roll the cream rims outward with your thumbs to set the cap overhang.
  6. Lay the strap flat and pat it straight between the pods.
  7. Let the whole piece dry flat for 24 hours with the rolls in place.
  8. Measure again: each body should be 5.1 in (13.0 cm) across, and the fold to pod 3’s rim top should be 21 in (53.3 cm).

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each pod has 60 sts in the body and 66 sts in each rim round
  • All three pods are 5.75 in (14.6 cm) tall, within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of each other
  • Tips are pointed and centered
  • Waistcoat columns run straight up from the tip
  • The olive BLO ridge shows all the way around each rim
  • Spiral jogs are hidden behind the strap
  • Rim tops sit 8.5 in (21.6 cm) apart
  • The ring loop is sewn closed on all three open sides
  • The holder hangs straight, with the pods facing forward
  • Each roll slides in and out with light resistance

Troubleshooting

It’s hard to get the hook into the waistcoat stitch. Keep the loops loose on your hook and pull up slightly taller loops. Going up 0.5 mm in hook size also helps.

The tip is flat, not pointed. Make sure Rnd 2 has no increases and that Rnds 3–4 add only 3 sts each.

The columns lean to one side. This is normal spiral drift. Blocking straightens most of it, and inserting the hook exactly in the center of the V reduces it.

The rim ruffles. Your crunch stitch is looser than gauge. Work Rnd 23 as sc in BLO in each st (60) with no increases, then work Rnds 24–26 as 30 pairs.

The rim pulls in tighter than the body. Work the sl sts loosely, or use a 5.5 mm (I-9) hook for the rim only.

The pods tilt forward. Add another line of running stitch across the strap at the bottom of each attachment zone.

The strap stretches. Use cotton yarn for the strap, or go down one hook size to make it firmer.

Care

Spot clean when you can. If needed, hand wash in cool water, press the water out in a towel, and reshape over rolls to dry flat.

Final Notes

Every measurement in this holder comes from the gauge. At 15 sts per 4 in (10.2 cm), 60 sts make a body 16 in (40.6 cm) around, enough for a 4.5 in (11.4 cm) roll. Twenty-two body rounds give 4.5 in (11.4 cm) of straight height, and five rim rounds add 1.25 in (3.2 cm) for a 5.75 in (14.6 cm) pod. On the strap, 16 rows per 4 in (10.2 cm) turn 34 rows into 8.5 in (21.6 cm) between rim tops, and 104 rows into 26 in (66.0 cm) of strap. Check each measurement as you go, and the three acorns will hang evenly.

Happy crocheting!
