This hanging holder keeps three spare rolls where you can see and reach them. Three round baskets are stacked on one cream back strap. The strap loops over a wooden ring, so it can hang from a hook or a door knob.
Each basket uses cream and terracotta rust. Two staggered bands of rust diamonds go around the sides, with a cream lattice between them. The cream yarn carried inside the rust stitches shows through as small flecks, which gives the diamonds a soft, pebbly look. A rust round turns the base edge, and three rust rounds finish the rim.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket is about 5 in (12.7 cm) across and 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall. The finished holder hangs about 16 in (40.6 cm) from the top of the strap fold to the bottom edge, not counting the ring.
You work each basket from the bottom up: a flat cream base, then a rust turning round, then single crochet tapestry colorwork in joined rounds. The strap is a flat strip of single crochet rows that narrows into a tab. You sew the baskets to the strap, add one cream edging round, and fold the tab around the ring.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: about 5 in (12.7 cm) wide at the baskets x 16 in (40.6 cm) hanging length, ring not included
- Skill level: Intermediate (tapestry crochet in the round)
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 4 (3 identical baskets + 1 back strap)
- Layout: 3 baskets stacked vertically on 1 strap, with a 0.75 in (1.9 cm) gap between baskets
- Piece size: each basket 5 in (12.7 cm) across x 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall; strap 2.9 in (7.4 cm) wide x 18.25 in (46.4 cm) long
- Strap size before border: 2.9 in (7.4 cm) x 18.25 in (46.4 cm)
- Border depth: 1 round of sc, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per edge; the bordered strap is 3.4 in (8.6 cm) x 18.75 in (47.6 cm)
Materials
Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds the basket shape well and copes with bathroom humidity. Avoid fuzzy or very stretchy yarns, because they blur the diamonds and let the baskets sag.
- Cream (Color A): 150 g, about 285 m
- Terracotta rust (Color B): 100 g, about 190 m
These amounts include a generous margin for your gauge check and for the strand carried through the colorwork rounds.
Tools:
- 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
- 1 wooden ring, 3 in (7.6 cm) outer diameter, with an inner opening of at least 2.25 in (5.7 cm)
- Tapestry needle
- 8 locking stitch markers
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Spray bottle and rust-proof pins for blocking
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- sl st – slip stitch
- BLO – back loop only
- MR – magic ring
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
- A / B – cream / rust
Special technique – tapestry sc: Work sc with the active color while laying the unused color along the tops of the previous round’s stitches, so each sc wraps around it. To change color, work the last sc before the change until 2 loops remain on the hook. Drop the old color, yarn over with the new color, and pull through. Keep the carried strand relaxed, not tight.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 14 sc x 16 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in tapestry sc, worked in joined rounds.
Make one full basket before anything else. It is your real gauge swatch, and it also tells you whether a toilet roll fits.
Checkpoints:
- After Rnd 9, the flat base measures 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across.
- After Rnd 16, the side measures 1.75 in (4.4 cm) tall from the rust turning round.
- After Rnd 26, the side measures 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall and the basket is 5 in (12.7 cm) across.
- After Row 17 of the strap, the strap measures 4.25 in (10.8 cm) long and 2.9 in (7.4 cm) wide.
If your base is larger than 4.75 in (12.1 cm), go down one hook size. If it is smaller, or a standard roll does not drop in easily, go up one hook size. Do not add stitches, because the 54-stitch count is tied to the 6-stitch diamond repeat.

Basket (Make 3)
Work in joined rounds. Join each round with a sl st to the first sc, then ch 1 (the ch 1 does not count as a st). The join line becomes the center back of the basket and will be hidden against the strap.
Base (Color A):
- Rnd 1: With A, 6 sc in MR. Join. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Rnd 3: Sc 1, inc 6 times. (18 sts)
- Rnd 4: Sc 2, inc 6 times. (24 sts)
- Rnd 5: Sc 3, inc 6 times. (30 sts)
- Rnd 6: Sc 4, inc 6 times. (36 sts)
- Rnd 7: Sc 5, inc 6 times. (42 sts)
- Rnd 8: Sc 6, inc 6 times. (48 sts)
- Rnd 9: Sc 7, inc 6 times. (54 sts)
Check that the base lies flat and measures 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across.
Turning round (Color B):
- Rnd 10: Change to B. Sc in BLO of each st around. (54 sts)
The unworked front loops make a crisp fold, and the base edge now shows a rust line. Do not cut A. Carry it inside the B stitches from here on.
Sides:
From Rnd 11 on, carry the unused color in every round. Each round has 9 repeats of 6 sts. In the instructions, “3 A” means 3 sc in A.
- Rnd 11: With A, sc around, carrying B. (54 sts)
Diamond band 1 (each diamond is centered on st 4 of its repeat):
- Rnd 12: 3 A, 1 B, 2 A 9 times. (54 sts: 9 B, 45 A)
- Rnd 13: 2 A, 3 B, 1 A 9 times. (54 sts: 27 B, 27 A)
- Rnd 14: 1 A, 5 B 9 times. (54 sts: 45 B, 9 A)
- Rnd 15: Repeat Rnd 13. (54 sts)
- Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 12. (54 sts)
The single A stitch in Rnd 14 forms the cream lattice line between diamonds.
- Rnd 17: With A, sc around. (54 sts)
Diamond band 2 (shifted 3 sts and centered on st 1 of each repeat, so these diamonds sit between the band 1 diamonds):
- Rnd 18: 1 B, 5 A 9 times. (54 sts: 9 B, 45 A)
- Rnd 19: 2 B, 3 A, 1 B 9 times. (54 sts: 27 B, 27 A)
- Rnd 20: 3 B, 1 A, 2 B 9 times. (54 sts: 45 B, 9 A)
- Rnd 21: Repeat Rnd 19. (54 sts)
- Rnd 22: Repeat Rnd 18. (54 sts)
- Rnd 23: With A, sc around. (54 sts) Cut A at the end of this round.
Rim (Color B):
- Rnds 24–26: With B, sc around. (54 sts each round)
Fasten off with an invisible join. The sides total 17 rounds (Rnds 10–26), which is 4.25 in (10.8 cm) at gauge.
Mark the back panel: Place markers in st 51 and st 4 of Rnd 10, and in st 51 and st 4 of Rnd 26. The 8 sts from st 51 through st 4 (sts 51–54 and 1–4) form the back panel, centered on the join line.
Back Strap (Make 1)
Work in rows with A. The ch 1 at the start of each row does not count as a st.
- Foundation: Ch 11.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (10 sts)
- Rows 2–57: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (10 sts)
Check: the strap is now 14.25 in (36.2 cm) long and 2.9 in (7.4 cm) wide.
Tab:
- Row 58: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 6, sc2tog. (8 sts)
- Row 59: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 4, sc2tog. (6 sts)
- Rows 60–73: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (6 sts)
Fasten off. The tab is 4 in (10.2 cm) long and about 1.7 in (4.3 cm) wide, and the full strap is 18.25 in (46.4 cm) long. Mark the neater face as the RS.
Make All Pieces
- Baskets: 3. Each uses A for Rnds 1–9, 11, 17 and 23 and the cream stitches in the bands. Each uses B for Rnd 10, the diamonds, and Rnds 24–26.
- Strap: 1, all in A
Layout on the RS of the strap:
( wooden ring )
| tab | rows 58-73
[ Basket 3 ] rows 41-57
| gap | rows 38-40
[ Basket 2 ] rows 21-37
| gap | rows 18-20
[ Basket 1 ] rows 1-17
Each 3-row gap is 0.75 in (1.9 cm).
Joining
Method: Whipstitch with A and a tapestry needle. Go through both loops of each basket stitch and through the strap stitch underneath it.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: The basket and strap use the same gauge, so 1 basket round matches 1 strap row and 1 basket st matches 1 strap st. The 8-st back panel sits over strap sts 2–9. This leaves st 1 and st 10 free at each strap edge for the border.
For Basket 1:
- Lay the strap RS up. Center the basket on it, with the join line over the strap center and the base edge at Row 1.
- Sew the 8 back-panel sts of Rnd 10 to sts 2–9 of Row 1.
- Sew up the right edge of the panel: st 4 of Rnds 10–26 to st 9 of Rows 1–17, one round per row (17 tacks).
- Sew the 8 back-panel sts of Rnd 26 to sts 2–9 of Row 17.
- Sew down the left edge: st 51 of Rnds 26–10 to st 2 of Rows 17–1 (17 tacks).
Repeat for Basket 2 on Rows 21–37 and Basket 3 on Rows 41–57.
Tension: Pull each stitch just snug. The back panel should lie flat on the strap without puckering, and the front of the basket should stay round.
Size checkpoint: Each basket covers 4.25 in (10.8 cm) of strap, with 0.75 in (1.9 cm) of bare strap between baskets.
Border
The border is one cream round worked around the strap only. The baskets are sewn to the face of the strap, not into its edges, so no basket stitches go into the border count. The basket walls curve forward and away from the strap edges, so you can slide the hook behind them.
Border gauge: the same as the body, 14 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), with 1 sc in each sc row-end.
- Rnd 1: With RS facing, join A in the first st of Row 73. Ch 1.
- Top edge: 3 sc in first st, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in last st. (10 sc)
- Side 1: Sc in the row-end of each row from Row 72 down to Row 2. (71 sc)
- Bottom edge: 3 sc in first foundation st, sc in next 8 sts, 3 sc in last st. (14 sc)
- Side 2: Sc in the row-end of each row from Row 2 up to Row 72. (71 sc)
- Join with sl st to first sc. (166 sts)
Fasten off.
Why the math works: The top edge has 6 sts and the bottom edge has 10. Each corner st gets 3 sc, so each end grows by 4 sc (6 + 4 = 10 and 10 + 4 = 14). The corner stitches cover Rows 1 and 73, which leaves Rows 2–72 on each side, or 71 row-ends. At this gauge, 1 sc per sc row-end keeps the edges straight. Total: 10 + 71 + 14 + 71 = 166.
The border adds about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) to every edge. The bordered strap measures 3.4 in (8.6 cm) wide x 18.75 in (47.6 cm) long.
Attach the ring: Pass the top 2.75 in (7.0 cm) of the tab (Rows 64–73 plus the border) through the ring from front to back. Fold it down against the WS and whipstitch the end and both sides in place. The fold sits between Rows 63 and 64, which leaves 1.5 in (3.8 cm) of tab showing above Basket 3. The hanging length is now 16 in (40.6 cm).
Final Blocking
- Mist the whole holder with water until it is damp but not soaked.
- Push a toilet roll, or a towel rolled to the same size, into each basket to round out the walls.
- Lay the holder face up on a towel or blocking mat.
- Pin the strap edges straight at 3.4 in (8.6 cm) wide.
- Smooth each rim so it sits level and round.
- Let the holder dry completely, for at least 24 hours, before you remove the rolls.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every basket round has 54 sts.
- The diamonds in each band line up vertically, and each band 2 diamond sits centered between two band 1 diamonds.
- The join line on each basket is hidden against the strap.
- Each basket is 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall and 5 in (12.7 cm) across.
- Each gap between baskets is 0.75 in (1.9 cm).
- The border round has 166 sts.
- The tab is folded around the ring and sewn securely.
- All yarn tails are woven in on the WS.
Troubleshooting
- Base ruffles: The increases are loose. Go down one hook size or tighten your tension.
- Base cups before Rnd 10: Go up one hook size for the base only.
- Rust shows through the cream areas: Lay the carried strand along the top of the previous round and keep it relaxed.
- Fabric puckers in the bands: The carried strand is too tight. Stretch the stitches on the hook after each color change.
- Diamonds drift sideways: Count each repeat. Always join rounds with a sl st and ch 1 instead of working in a spiral.
- Roll does not fit: Remake the basket one hook size larger and keep 54 sts.
- Baskets tilt forward: Re-sew the top edge of the back panel more firmly to its matching strap row.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Reshape with toilet rolls inside the baskets and dry flat.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other in a simple chain. A gauge of 14 sc x 16 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 4.75 in (12.1 cm) base and a 54-st basket that is 5 in (12.7 cm) across. Seventeen side rounds give a 4.25 in (10.8 cm) basket, which matches 17 strap rows exactly. Three baskets and two 3-row gaps fill the 57-row, 14.25 in (36.2 cm) strap body. The tab and one border round bring the strap to 18.75 in (47.6 cm). Folding the tab around the ring leaves a holder that hangs 16 in (40.6 cm).
Check your first basket against the measurements, and then trust the counts for the other two.
Happy crocheting!
