This little wreath ornament is made with fine cotton thread. It has four spoked fans, a ring of tiny five-petal flowers, a scalloped picot edge, and a cream lace bow sewn over the bottom fan. It makes a light, vintage-style decoration for the tree, a gift topper, or a window.
The wreath is sage green and the bow is cream. It is classic thread lace: open chain arches, spoked fans, and small picots that catch the light. The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.
The finished wreath measures 3.5″ (8.9 cm) across. With the bow it is about 4.5″ (11.4 cm) tall, and the hanging loop adds about 1.25″ (3.2 cm) more.
The wreath is a single piece worked in rounds outward from a chain ring. Round 2 makes four fans with chain loops between them. Rounds 3 and 4 add the fan arches and two stacked flowers at each diagonal. Round 5 is the picot border. You make the bow separately as two wings, two tails, and a center knot, then sew it on. A chain hanging loop finishes the top.

Materials
Choose a mercerized size 10 cotton thread. It holds crisp picots and blocks flat. Avoid fuzzy or very soft threads, because the fans lose their spoked look.
- Sage green (A): 8 g, about 45 m
- Cream (B): 3 g, about 17 m
Both amounts include extra for swatching and weaving in ends.
Tools:
– 1.5 mm (US steel 8) crochet hook
– Fine tapestry needle, or a sewing needle with a large eye
– Small scissors
– Blocking foam board and rustproof pins
– Spray starch or fabric stiffener
– Stitch marker
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- tch – turning chain
- rep – repeat
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
Special stitches:
- Picot (p): Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.
- Fan: In the same st, work (tr, ch 1) 8 times, then tr. This makes 9 tr and 8 ch-1 sps.
- Chain Flower (CF): Ch 1 (flower center), *ch 4, sl st in the flower-center ch; rep from * 4 more times. This makes 5 ch-4 petals. Number them 1 to 5 in the order you make them.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge is 12 sc = 1″ (2.5 cm). A tr is about 0.4″ (1.0 cm) tall, and a dc row on the bow is about 0.2″ (0.5 cm).
Make the wreath before the bow. The wreath works as your gauge swatch, so it shows you right away whether your tension suits the design.
Measurement checkpoints (laid flat and lightly pressed):
– After Round 1: center opening 1.7″ (4.3 cm), outer edge 1.9″ (4.8 cm)
– After Round 2: 2.7″ (6.9 cm) from fan tip to fan tip
– After Round 3: 2.9″ (7.4 cm)
– After Round 4: 3.25″ (8.3 cm)
– After Round 5: 3.5″ (8.9 cm)
If your wreath is too big by more than 1/8″ (0.3 cm) at Round 2, switch to a 1.25 mm hook or make your tr a little shorter. If it is too small, switch to a 1.75 mm hook. Check Round 1 closely. Every later round is spaced on those 64 sts, so a tight Round 1 makes the fans cup.

Wreath
Use sage green (A). Leave an 8″ (20.3 cm) tail.
Foundation: Ch 64, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Don’t twist the chain.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st in first sc. (64 sc)
The ring divides into 4 sections of 16 sts. Each section has 3 single sts (A, B, C) and 1 fan.
Round 2 (fan round): Ch 1, sc in first sc (sc A). Ch 5, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc (sc B), ch 5, sk 3 sc, Fan in next sc, ch 5, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc (sc C), ch 5, sk 3 sc*, sc in next sc (sc A); rep from * 2 more times, then rep from * to ** once more. Sl st in first sc.
Each section uses 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 = 16 sts.
(12 sc, 4 Fans = 36 tr and 32 ch-1 sps, 16 ch-5 loops)
In each section, the ch-5 loops are loop 1 (A to B), loop 2 (B to fan), loop 3 (fan to C), and loop 4 (C to the next A). The fans sit at the top, bottom, left, and right. The A sts sit on the diagonals.
Round 3 (inner flowers): Sl st in next 3 ch to reach the center of loop 1. Ch 1, *sc in loop 1, ch 5 (loop X), sc in loop 2, ch 3, sc in first ch-1 sp of fan, [ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp] 7 times, ch 3, sc in loop 3, ch 5 (loop Y), sc in loop 4, ch 2, CF, ch 2; rep from * 3 more times. Sl st in first sc.
Each CF sits over an A st, on the diagonal.
(48 sc, 4 inner CF, 8 ch-5 loops, 28 ch-3 fan loops, 8 ch-3 connectors)
Round 4 (fan arches and outer flowers): Sl st in next 3 ch to reach the center of loop X. Ch 1, *sc in loop X, ch 6, sc in first ch-3 fan loop, [ch 4, sc in next ch-3 fan loop] 6 times, ch 6, sc in loop Y, ch 4, sc in petal 2 of inner CF, ch 2, CF, ch 2, sc in petal 4 of same inner CF, ch 4; rep from * 3 more times. Sl st in first sc.
The outer flower sits just outside the inner flower, between its petals 2 and 4. This makes the stacked pair on each diagonal.
(44 sc, 4 outer CF, 24 ch-4 fan arches, 8 ch-6 loops, 8 ch-4 connectors)
Checkpoint: the wreath should measure 3.25″ (8.3 cm). Don’t fasten off.
Border
The border is Round 5. Work it only into the loops of Round 4 and skip every Round 4 sc.
Border gauge: 1 sc per chain in each loop, at 12 sc = 1″ (2.5 cm).
Round 5: Ch 1, *(3 sc, p, 3 sc) in first ch-6 loop; (2 sc, p, 2 sc) in each of next 6 ch-4 fan arches; (3 sc, p, 3 sc) in next ch-6 loop; 4 sc in next ch-4 connector; on the outer CF, sc in petal 1, ch 2, sc in petal 2, ch 2, (sc, p, sc) in petal 3, ch 2, sc in petal 4, ch 2, sc in petal 5; 4 sc in next ch-4 connector; rep from * 3 more times. Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Count per section (each of the 4 sides):
– First ch-6 loop: 6 sc, 1 p
– Fan arches: 6 × 4 = 24 sc, 6 p
– Second ch-6 loop: 6 sc, 1 p
– Connectors: 4 + 4 = 8 sc
– Outer flower: 6 sc, 1 p, 4 ch-2 sps
– Section total: 50 sc, 9 picots, 4 ch-2 sps
(Round total: 4 × 50 = 200 sc, 36 picots, 16 ch-2 sps)
Why the math works: Each section’s edge loops in Round 4 hold 6 + 24 + 6 + 4 + 4 = 44 ch. The border puts exactly 44 sc into them, 1 per chain, so the edge doesn’t pull in or ruffle. The other 6 sc go into the 5 petals of the outer flower and spread around its curve. The scallops come from the arched loops, not from extra stitches. The picots add about 0.125″ (0.3 cm) all around, taking the wreath from 3.25″ (8.3 cm) to 3.5″ (8.9 cm).
Hanging Loop
Choose one fan to be the top. Join A with a sl st in the Round 4 sc between fan arches 3 and 4 of that fan, which is the center of the fan.
Ch 30, sl st in the same sc. Ch 1, work 30 sc into the ch-30 loop, sl st in first sc. Fasten off. The loop stands about 1.25″ (3.2 cm) above the wreath.
Bow
Use cream (B) for all bow pieces.
Wing (make 2):
Row 1: Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ring. Turn. (7 dc)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next dc, [ch 1, dc in next dc] 5 times, working the last dc in top of tch. Turn. (7 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, [2 sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc] 6 times. Turn. (19 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, [p, sc in next 3 sc] 5 times, p, sc in last 2 sc. Fasten off. (19 sc, 6 picots)
Each wing is a small fan shape about 0.85″ (2.2 cm) long. Its point is at the starting ring, and the picot edge is on the outside.
Tail (make 2):
Row 1: Ch 7, dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 3 ch. Turn. (5 dc)
Row 2 (eyelet): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc, dc in top of tch. Turn. (4 dc, 1 ch-1 sp)
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc in ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, dc in top of tch. Turn. (5 dc)
Rows 4–5: Rep Rows 2–3. (2 eyelets total)
Row 6 (notched end): Ch 4 (counts as tr), dc in next dc, hdc in next dc, dc in next dc, tr in top of tch. Don’t turn. (5 sts)
The middle of the end is shorter than the edges, which makes a V notch.
Edging: Ch 3, sl st in top of last tr (tip picot). Work 2 sc in each of the 6 row-ends down the side (12 sc). Sc in each of the 5 foundation ch (5 sc). Work 2 sc in each of the 6 row-ends up the other side (12 sc). Ch 3, sl st in top of beginning ch-4 (tip picot). Sl st in next 3 sts across the notch. Fasten off. (29 sc, 2 picots)
Each tail is about 1.25″ (3.2 cm) long and 0.5″ (1.3 cm) wide.
Center Knot:
Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 8 sc in ring, sl st in first sc. (8 sc)
Round 2: Sc2tog 4 times. (4 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a 10″ (25.4 cm) tail. Pull the ring tightly closed so it forms a raised bead about 0.25″ (0.6 cm) across.
Bow assembly:
1. Place the wings side by side with their points touching at the center and the picot edges facing out. Sew the points together.
2. Place the foundation ends of both tails behind the center. Angle them down and out in an inverted V, and sew them in place.
3. Sew the knot over the center so it covers all the joined points. The bow is about 1.75″ (4.4 cm) wide and 1.75″ (4.4 cm) tall.
4. Center the bow over the bottom fan of the wreath, with the knot on the bottom border. Using B and small hidden stitches, sew around the knot and attach each wing tip to the fan arches.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along the chain loops. Trim close.
- Soak the ornament in cool water for a few minutes, then roll it in a towel to remove extra water.
- Pin it face up on the foam board. Pin the center opening into a 1.7″ (4.3 cm) circle first.
- Pin each fan tip outward so the spokes are straight, with 3.5″ (8.9 cm) between opposite tips.
- Pin every picot point, and open each flower petal with a pin.
- Shape the bow wings and spread the tails.
- Spray with starch. Let it dry completely, at least 12 hours, before unpinning.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Wreath measures 3.5″ (8.9 cm) across in both directions
- Center opening is round and 1.7″ (4.3 cm) wide
- All 4 fans have 9 straight tr spokes
- Each diagonal has 2 stacked flowers, each with 5 open petals
- Border has 36 picots, 9 per section
- Hanging loop is centered over the top fan
- Bow is centered over the bottom fan, with the knot raised and the tails even
- No loose ends show on the front
Troubleshooting
- Fans cup or curl: Round 1 is too tight. Redo it with a larger hook or a looser chain.
- Edge ruffles: There are too many sc in the border loops. Use exactly 1 sc per chain.
- Edge pulls in: Your chains are too tight. Loosen the ch-4 and ch-6 loops in Round 4.
- Flowers flop sideways: Make sure the sc goes into petals 2 and 4, not the petals next to them.
- Bow tilts: Sew it again so the knot lines up with the center spoke of the bottom fan.
- Wreath is oval: Block it again and pin the fan tips at equal distances.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, then reshape and re-starch if needed. Store it flat or hanging, away from heavy ornaments.

Final Notes
Here is the measurement chain. Round 1 sets a 1.7″ (4.3 cm) opening. The fans grow the wreath to 2.7″ (6.9 cm), Rounds 3 and 4 bring it to 3.25″ (8.3 cm), and the picot border finishes it at 3.5″ (8.9 cm). The 1.75″ (4.4 cm) bow makes the ornament about 4.5″ (11.4 cm) tall. If you check your size at each stage, the finished piece will block out true.
Happy crocheting!
