This curtain is made of eight long strands of joined almond-shaped rings. Each ring has a solid, ribbed rim around a pointed oval opening, and the rings connect tip to tip, so every strand reads as a chain of soft lenses with a narrow waist between links. A hanging loop sits at the top of each strand and a full tassel finishes the bottom.
The colors alternate sage green and cream across the rod: four green strands and four cream strands. The look is calm, natural and a little boho. It works in a window, a doorway or as a backdrop wall hanging, and it suits both everyday decor and soft holiday styling.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each strand is about 42.5 in (108.0 cm) long from the top of the hanging loop to the end of the tassel. With strands spaced 3.5 in (8.9 cm) apart center to center, the curtain covers about 26.75 in (67.9 cm) of rod.
Construction is simple and repeatable. You crochet one almond ring in three rounds, then join each following ring to the one above it with a join-as-you-go slip stitch in the last round. The hanging loop and tassel are added at the end. You never sew rings together.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished strand length: 42.5 in (108.0 cm) including loop and tassel
- Skill level: Easy to intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted weight (#4) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 5 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 64 almond rings (8 strands x 8 rings), plus 8 hanging loops and 8 tassels
- Layout: 8 strands side by side, alternating green and cream; 8 rings per strand, joined tip to tip
- Single ring size: 2.25 in wide x 4.5 in long (5.7 x 11.4 cm)
- Ring opening: about 1.25 in x 3.5 in (3.2 x 8.9 cm)
- Strand length before loop and tassel: 36 in (91.4 cm)
- Rim depth around the opening: 0.5 in (1.3 cm)
- Hanging loop: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long
- Tassel: 5 in (12.7 cm) long
Materials
Choose a smooth, firm worsted cotton or cotton blend with good stitch definition. Cotton gives the rims their crisp, cord-like texture and stops the strands from stretching under their own weight. Soft acrylic will work but will stretch more over time.
- Sage green: about 160 g / 250 m (273 yd)
- Cream: about 160 g / 250 m (273 yd)
Each strand uses about 51 m: roughly 4.8 m per ring (38.4 m for 8 rings), 1 m for the hanging loop, about 11.2 m for the tassel and a little extra for tying. Four strands per color comes to about 204 m. The quantities above include a margin of more than 20% for gauge differences and swatching.
Tools:
– 5 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– 2 stitch markers
– Stiff card 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall for tassels
– Sharp scissors
– Tape measure
– Blocking mat and rust-proof pins
– Spray bottle
– Curtain rod or wooden dowel, up to 1 in (2.5 cm) thick
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
Special technique: join-as-you-go tip (JAYG tip). Work sc in the ch-2 sp of the new ring. Instead of ch 1, remove your hook, insert it from front to back through the ch-1 sp at the bottom tip of the previous ring, pick up the dropped loop and pull it through. Then work sc in the same ch-2 sp of the new ring. The sl st replaces the ch 1, so the stitch count does not change.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc x 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc worked flat.
Make one complete ring before you start any strand. The ring is your real gauge swatch, because round 1 is worked over a chain loop and is affected by how tightly you pack the stitches.
Checkpoints for one ring (lay flat and pinch the tips gently into points):
– After Round 1: opening about 1.25 in x 3.5 in (3.2 x 8.9 cm)
– After Round 2: about 1.75 in x 4 in (4.4 x 10.2 cm)
– After Round 3: 2.25 in x 4.5 in (5.7 x 11.4 cm)
If your ring is too big: go down to a 4.5 mm hook, or pack round 1 more tightly over the chain.
If your ring is too small or cups: go up to a 5.5 mm hook. If round 1 looks crowded, check that you worked 32 sc, not more.
A ring that is off by 0.25 in (0.6 cm) in length becomes 2 in (5.1 cm) over a full strand, so getting this right first matters.

Almond Ring (Make 64: 32 Green, 32 Cream)
Make the first ring of each strand on its own. Every following ring is joined in Round 3 (see Joining).
Foundation: Ch 30, sl st into first ch to form a ring. Do not twist the chain.
Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st). Work 32 sc into the ring, working over the chain rather than into the individual chains. Slide the stitches evenly so they cover the chain fully. Sl st to first sc to join. (32 sc)
Place a marker in sc 1 and sc 17. These are the two tips. There are 15 sc between the markers on each side.
Round 2 (conversion round, forms the points): Ch 2 (does not count as a st). Working in BLO throughout: (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in marked sc 1, hdc in each of next 15 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in marked sc 17, hdc in each of next 15 sts. Sl st to first hdc to join.
Count: 32 hdc (1 per existing st) + 2 extra hdc = 34 hdc, plus 2 ch-2 sps.
Each side now has 17 hdc: 15 side hdc plus 1 tip hdc at each end.
Working in BLO leaves the front loops as a raised line, which gives the ring its radiating, ribbed look.
Round 3 (conversion round, final edge): Sl st into first ch-2 sp. Ch 1 (does not count as a st). (Sc, ch 1, sc) in same ch-2 sp, sc in BLO in each of next 17 hdc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-2 sp, sc in BLO in each of next 17 hdc. Sl st to first sc to join.
Count: 34 sc (1 per existing hdc) + 4 extra sc in the 2 tip sps = 38 sc, plus 2 ch-1 sps.
Each side has 19 sc: 17 side sc plus 1 tip sc at each end. 2 sides x 19 = 38.
Fasten off. Weave in ends along the inside of the rim. Pinch both tips firmly into points.
Make All Pieces

Joining
Rings are joined tip to tip with the JAYG tip during Round 3. Each strand is joined only within itself; strands do not connect to each other.
Method:
1. Make Ring 1 complete. Its first ch-1 sp is the top tip and its second ch-1 sp is the bottom tip.
2. Work Ring 2 through Round 2.
3. Begin Round 3 of Ring 2: sl st into first ch-2 sp, ch 1, then work the JAYG tip into the bottom ch-1 sp of Ring 1. Finish Round 3 as written.
4. Repeat for Rings 3 to 8, always joining the new ring’s first tip to the bottom tip of the ring above.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: The joining sl st replaces the ch 1 at one tip only. Each ring still has 38 sc and two tip spaces, so the rings sit point to point with one tight waist between them and no extra bulk.
Tension: Keep the joining sl st snug but not tight. If it is too loose the rings swing apart and gap; if it is too tight the tips curl forward. Make sure the new ring is not twisted before you join, with both rings showing the same side.
Size checkpoint: After 4 rings the strand should measure 18 in (45.7 cm). After 8 rings it should measure 36 in (91.4 cm). Each ring adds 4.5 in (11.4 cm), because the rings touch at the tips without overlapping.
Border: Hanging Loops and Tassels
This curtain has no border around the outside. The finishing trim is the hanging loop at the top of each strand and the tassel at the bottom. Both are worked at the tips, so the ring stitch counts do not change.
Trim gauge: The loop is worked in sc over a chain, at the same 4 sc per inch (per 2.54 cm) as the rings, packed slightly tighter so it holds its shape.
Hanging loop (1 per strand):
1. Join yarn with a sl st in the top ch-1 sp of Ring 1.
2. Ch 14, sl st back into the same ch-1 sp to form a loop.
3. Work 22 sc over the chain loop, covering it completely. Sl st into the ch-1 sp to join. (22 sc)
4. Fasten off and weave in.
Why the math works: A 14-ch loop is about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) around. Packed with 22 sc, it lies flat at about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long and fits over a rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) thick. Because the loop is worked only into the tip space, the ring’s 19 sc per side stay unchanged.
Tassel (1 per strand):
1. Wrap yarn 40 times around the 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card.
2. Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) length under the wraps at the top edge and tie it tightly.
3. Cut the wraps along the bottom edge.
4. About 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top, wrap a separate 20 in (50.8 cm) length around the bundle 6 times to form the neck. Tie it off and bury the ends inside the tassel.
5. Use the top ties to attach the tassel through the bottom ch-1 sp of Ring 8. Knot it securely and bury the tails in the tassel.
6. Trim the ends evenly to 5 in (12.7 cm).
Strand length check: 1.5 in loop + 36 in rings + 5 in tassel = 42.5 in (3.8 + 91.4 + 12.7 = 107.9, which is 108.0 cm when you convert the 42.5 in total directly).
Final Blocking
- Lay each strand flat on the blocking mat, straight and untwisted.
- Pinch each ring’s tips into sharp points and shape the opening into a clean almond shape.
- Pin each ring to 2.25 in x 4.5 in (5.7 x 11.4 cm), with one pin at each tip and one at each side.
- Check the strand: 36 in (91.4 cm) from the top tip of Ring 1 to the bottom tip of Ring 8.
- Mist lightly with water until damp, not soaked.
- Let it dry completely, at least 12 hours.
- Unpin, then steam the tassels lightly or comb them straight with damp fingers. Trim again if needed.
- Hang the strands on the rod in the layout order, spacing them 3.5 in (8.9 cm) apart center to center.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every ring has 38 sc in Round 3: 19 per side, including both tip sc.
- Every ring measures 2.25 in x 4.5 in (5.7 x 11.4 cm).
- All rings in a strand face the same way, with the BLO ridges on the same side.
- Joins are snug, centered at the tips, and not twisted.
- Each strand measures 36 in (91.4 cm) before trim and 42.5 in (108.0 cm) finished.
- Hanging loops are all the same size and slide easily over the rod.
- Tassels are all 5 in (12.7 cm) with matching neck wraps.
- Strands alternate green and cream, starting with green on the left.
- All ends are woven in and hidden.
Troubleshooting
Opening is round instead of almond-shaped. The tip increases are in the wrong place. Check that sc 1 and sc 17 were marked, with exactly 15 sts between them on each side.
Ring cups or ruffles. Round 1 is overpacked or your tension is tight. Count to 32 sc and try a larger hook.
Ring curls toward the back. This is common with BLO work. Wet blocking fixes it. Make sure you work into the back loops on the same side every time.
Strand is twisting. One ring was joined while flipped. Undo the JAYG sl st, turn the ring and rejoin.
Strands are different lengths. Measure each ring. Rework any ring that is off by more than 0.125 in (0.3 cm) rather than stretching it in blocking.
Tassel neck slips. Tie it tighter and add 2 more wraps before knotting.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out water in a towel, and dry flat with the rings pinned back into shape. Comb the tassels straight while damp, and do not tumble dry.

Final Notes
The whole curtain follows one measurement chain. Gauge of 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 32 sc opening of 1.25 x 3.5 in (3.2 x 8.9 cm). Two more rounds bring each ring to 2.25 x 4.5 in (5.7 x 11.4 cm), with 19 sc per side. Eight rings joined tip to tip give a 36 in (91.4 cm) strand, and the 1.5 in (3.8 cm) loop plus 5 in (12.7 cm) tassel bring it to 42.5 in (108.0 cm). Get the first ring right and every strand will match.
Happy crocheting!
