Lavender Lattice Three-Tier Hanging Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

This hanging organizer keeps three spare toilet paper rolls off the counter and within easy reach. It is made of three round baskets with a raised diamond-lattice band, joined by two solid straps that loop over a wooden ring. Hang it on a door hook, a towel hook, or the back of a cabinet door.

The sample is worked in one soft lavender cotton, which shows the crossed stitches clearly and looks calm in a bathroom. The natural wood ring adds a warm accent. Any solid or lightly heathered color works well. Avoid strongly variegated yarn, which hides the lattice.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket measures about 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall. The finished organizer hangs about 24 in (61.0 cm) from the top of the ring to the bottom of the lowest basket.

Construction is simple. You crochet three identical baskets from the bottom up in joined rounds. Then you crochet two flat straps in rows. The straps are sewn to opposite sides of each basket and folded over the ring.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: about 24 in (61.0 cm) tall when hanging, 5.75 in (14.6 cm) wide
  • Skill level: Easy-intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: US 7 (4.5 mm)
  • Number of pieces: 5 crocheted pieces (3 baskets, 2 straps) plus 1 wooden ring
  • Layout: 3 baskets stacked vertically, with a 2 in (5.1 cm) gap between baskets
  • Basket size: 5.75 in (14.6 cm) diameter x 4 in (10.2 cm) tall
  • Basket height before border: 3.8 in (9.7 cm)
  • Border depth: 0.2 in (0.5 cm), one round of reverse single crochet on each rim
  • Strap size: 0.75 in (1.9 cm) wide x 24 in (61.0 cm) long

Materials

Yarn: Choose a worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds its shape under the weight of the rolls and stretches less than acrylic. A smooth, plied yarn shows the lattice best.

  • Lavender: about 120 g / 230 m (252 yd), based on a cotton of about 190 m (208 yd) per 100 g

This quantity includes a margin of roughly 25%. The organizer itself uses about 180 m (197 yd).

Tools:

  • US 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook
  • 1 wooden ring, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) outer diameter
  • 4 locking stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Rust-proof pins and a towel for blocking

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
  • BLO – back loop only
  • MR – magic ring
  • rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch): sc worked from left to right
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sp – space

Special stitches

X-st (crossed treble), worked over 4 sts: Yo twice, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 (3 loops). Yo, skip next 2 sts, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop (5 loops). [Yo, pull through 2] 4 times (1 loop). Ch 1, dc into the 2 strands at the center where the legs meet. The X-st uses 4 sts and leaves 3 tops: the tr top, the ch-1 sp, and the dc.

Beg X-st (beginning X-st), worked over 4 sts: Ch 4 (counts as the first leg, worked in st 1), skip next 2 sts, tr in next st, ch 1, dc around the center of the tr just made, catching the ch-4 at the same height.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rows (or rounds) = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc.

Make one full basket before starting the others. It is your gauge swatch, and it shows whether a roll fits.

Checkpoints:

  • After Rnd 6 (36 sts): base about 2.9 in (7.4 cm) across.
  • After Rnd 12 (72 sts): base 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across, flat with no ruffling.
  • After Rnd 16: wall 0.9 in (2.3 cm) tall above the base edge.
  • After Rnd 19: lattice band 2 in (5.1 cm) tall.
  • After Rnd 23: wall 3.8 in (9.7 cm) tall.
  • After Rnd 24: wall 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.
  • Strap: 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).

If your base is too large, go down one hook size. If it is too small or a roll will not fit, go up one hook size. Do not add base rounds, because the lattice needs a stitch count that is a multiple of 4.

Basket (Make 3)

Work in joined rounds. Unless told otherwise, join each round with a sl st to the first st, then ch 1 (does not count as a st). Stagger the increases to keep the base round.

Base

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc 1, inc] 6 times. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: Sc 1, inc, [sc 2, inc] 5 times, sc 1. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: [Sc 3, inc] 6 times. (30 sts)

Rnd 6: Sc 2, inc, [sc 4, inc] 5 times, sc 2. (36 sts)

Rnd 7: [Sc 5, inc] 6 times. (42 sts)

Rnd 8: Sc 3, inc, [sc 6, inc] 5 times, sc 3. (48 sts)

Rnd 9: [Sc 7, inc] 6 times. (54 sts)

Rnd 10: Sc 4, inc, [sc 8, inc] 5 times, sc 4. (60 sts)

Rnd 11: [Sc 9, inc] 6 times. (66 sts)

Rnd 12: Sc 5, inc, [sc 10, inc] 5 times, sc 5. (72 sts)

Check: the base is 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across and lies flat.

Lower Wall

Rnd 13: Sc in BLO of each st around. (72 sts) The unused front loops form a crisp fold where the base meets the wall.

Rnds 14–16: Sc in each st around. (72 sts)

Lattice Band

Rnd 17: Sl st in first st (this is st 1). Beg X-st over sts 1–4, ch 1, [X-st over next 4 sts, ch 1] 17 times. Join with sl st to top of ch-4. (18 X-sts and 18 ch-1 sps; 72 sts and sps)

Each repeat leaves 4 tops: the tr top, the ch-1 sp inside the X, the dc, and the ch-1 sp between X-sts. Treat every ch-1 sp as a stitch in the next round.

Rnd 18: Sl st in next ch-1 sp and in next dc to shift the round by half a repeat. Treat that dc as st 1. Beg X-st over 4 sts and sps, ch 1, [X-st over next 4 sts and sps, ch 1] 17 times. Join with sl st to top of ch-4. (18 X-sts; 72 sts and sps)

The legs of this round land between the X-sts below. Their tops meet and form diamonds with open centers.

Rnd 19: Repeat Rnd 18. (18 X-sts; 72 sts and sps)

Upper Wall

Rnd 20: Ch 1, sc in each tr top, ch-1 sp, and dc around. (72 sts)

Rnds 21–23: Sc in each st around. (72 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue with the rim border in the Border section.

Strap (Make 2)

Row 1: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch. (3 sts)

Rows 2–108: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (3 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail for sewing. Each strap is 0.75 in (1.9 cm) wide and 24 in (61.0 cm) long.

Count rows from one end and mark the sections with stitch markers. The 108 rows are used like this:

  • Rows 1–9: ring fold, 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • Rows 10–36: drop from ring to top basket, 6 in (15.2 cm)
  • Rows 37–54: top basket wall, 4 in (10.2 cm)
  • Rows 55–63: gap, 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • Rows 64–81: middle basket wall, 4 in (10.2 cm)
  • Rows 82–90: gap, 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • Rows 91–108: bottom basket wall, 4 in (10.2 cm)

Check: 9 + 27 + 18 + 9 + 18 + 9 + 18 = 108 rows.

Make All Pieces

All pieces use the single lavender color.

  • Baskets: 3 in lavender (about 53 m / 58 yd each)
  • Straps: 2 in lavender (about 10 m / 11 yd each)

Layout, front view:

        ( RING )
         / \
       strap strap
BASKET 1
   gap
BASKET 2
   gap
BASKET 3

Joining

Method: Use the yarn tail to whipstitch each strap to the outside of each basket wall. Sew down both long edges of the strap.

Placement: On each basket, place 2 markers on Rnd 23 exactly 36 sts apart, so they sit on opposite sides. Center one strap over each marker.

Stitch-to-stitch logic: Measured in strap rows, each basket wall is 18 rows tall:

  • 4 sc rounds (Rnds 13–16) = 4 rows
  • 3 lattice rounds, each matching 3 strap rows = 9 rows
  • 4 sc rounds (Rnds 20–23) = 4 rows
  • 1 border round = 1 row

So 18 strap rows cover one wall from the base fold to the rim. On each long edge, sew 1 whipstitch per strap row, catching one sc (or one tr leg) of the wall.

  1. Start with the bottom basket. Line up strap Row 108 with the base fold (Rnd 13) and Row 91 with the top of the rim. Sew both long edges.
  2. Leave Rows 82–90 free as the gap. Line up Row 81 with the base fold of the middle basket and Row 64 with its rim. Sew.
  3. Leave Rows 55–63 free. Sew Rows 54–37 to the top basket the same way.
  4. Repeat Steps 1–3 with the second strap on the opposite side.
  5. Pass Rows 1–9 of each strap over the ring from front to back. Fold Row 1 down to meet Row 10 and whipstitch the end across all 3 sts.

Tension: Sew firmly, but don’t pull so hard that the wall puckers. The strap should lie flat against the basket with no gathering.

Size checkpoint: Lay the organizer flat. Each gap is 2 in (5.1 cm). The total length from the top of the ring to the base of the bottom basket is about 24 in (61.0 cm).

Border

The border is one round of reverse single crochet on each basket rim. Work it directly after Rnd 23, before joining.

Border gauge: 1 rev sc per st, at the same 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm) as the sc wall.

Rnd 24: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, working left to right. Join with sl st to the first st. (72 sts) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Counts per side: The basket is round, so count it in two halves between the strap markers. Each half has 36 sts in Rnd 23 and 36 rev sc in Rnd 24. Total: 36 + 36 = 72.

Why the math works: The rim already has 72 sts, and the border works exactly 1 st into each one. Nothing is added or skipped. The circumference stays 18 in (45.7 cm), so the rim neither flares nor pulls in. The corded rev sc adds 0.2 in (0.5 cm) and brings the wall from 3.8 in (9.7 cm) to 4 in (10.2 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends before blocking.
  2. Dampen the organizer with cool water and gently squeeze out the extra water in a towel. Do not wring.
  3. Fill each basket with a toilet roll wrapped in a plastic bag, or with a rolled towel of the same size.
  4. Shape each base flat and each wall straight. Pinch the lattice diamonds open with your fingers.
  5. Lay the straps flat and straight, and check that each gap measures 2 in (5.1 cm).
  6. Let everything dry completely, then remove the forms.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each base has 72 sts and measures 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across.
  • Each basket is 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.
  • Each lattice round has 18 X-sts, with the diamonds lined up around the basket.
  • Each rim has 72 rev sc and lies smooth.
  • Each strap is 108 rows long and 0.75 in (1.9 cm) wide.
  • The straps sit exactly opposite each other on every basket.
  • Both gaps are 2 in (5.1 cm), and the baskets hang level.
  • The ring folds are sewn securely through all 3 sts.
  • All ends are woven in.

Troubleshooting

Base ruffles: Your stitches are too loose for the increase rate. Go down one hook size.

Base cups: Your tension is too tight. Go up one hook size.

Lattice count is off: Count 72 sts and sps after each lattice round. A missed ch-1 sp is the usual cause.

Diamonds do not meet: You skipped the 2 sl sts at the start of Rnd 18 or 19, so the X-sts stacked instead of offsetting.

Baskets tilt: The straps are not exactly opposite. Recount the 36 sts between the markers.

Roll will not fit: Remake the basket with a larger hook, or check that the wall has not lost stitches.

Straps stretch: Use cotton and keep the strap sc tight.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Lay flat to dry, reshaping the baskets over rolls, and do not tumble dry.

Final Notes

Each measurement leads to the next. A gauge of 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 72-st base of 5.75 in (14.6 cm). Those 72 sts give 18 X-st repeats in each lattice round. Four sc rounds, three lattice rounds, four sc rounds, and one border round make an 18-row wall that is 4 in (10.2 cm) tall. Each 108-row strap is 24 in (61.0 cm) long. It covers 2 in (5.1 cm) for the ring fold, 6 in (15.2 cm) of drop, three 4 in (10.2 cm) walls, and two 2 in (5.1 cm) gaps.

Check your first basket carefully, and the other two will match it.

Happy crocheting!
