The Snowdrift Lace Square is a small, airy motif worked in crisp white cotton thread. Fan-shaped clusters of double crochet anchor the four corners, a diamond net of chain loops fills each side, and a row of rounded shells finishes the edge with a soft scalloped trim.
The style is classic vintage lace: light, open, and delicate, with no color changes. It looks lovely on its own as a coaster, sachet top, ornament backing, or gift-tag accent.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished motif measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm) square after blocking.
You will work the motif in the round from a center ring. Rounds 1–5 build the square with corner fans and a growing diamond mesh. Round 6 converts the edge to single crochet, and Round 7 adds the shell trim. It is a single piece with no joining and only two ends to weave in.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) square, blocked
- Skill level: Easy / advanced beginner
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Size 3 cotton crochet thread (lace/fingering, CYC 0–1)
- Hook: 2.25 mm (US B-1)
- Number of pieces: 1
- Layout: Single square motif, worked in the round
- Piece size before border: 3 in (7.6 cm) square after Round 5
- Size after sc round: about 3.2 in (8.1 cm) square after Round 6
- Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per side (Rounds 6–7 combined)
Materials
Yarn advice: Choose a mercerized cotton thread in size 3. Mercerized cotton has a slight sheen, holds shells crisply, and blocks very flat. If you can’t find size 3 thread, a smooth fingering-weight cotton will also work. Avoid fuzzy or splitty fibers, because the diamond mesh loses definition.
- White (or cream): 6 g, about 17 m (18.6 yd)
The quantity includes a margin of about 50% over what one motif actually uses, so a swatch or a frogged round won’t leave you short.
Tools:
- 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook
- Fine tapestry needle
- 4 locking stitch markers
- Blocking mat or foam board
- Rust-proof pins
- Spray bottle with cool water
- Ruler or tape measure
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- beg – beginning
- rep – repeat
- *…* – repeat the instructions between asterisks as directed
Special stitches:
- Corner group: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) worked in the same corner sp.
- Shell: 5 dc worked in the same st.
- Corner shell: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) worked in the same st.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Lace gauge is checked by measuring the motif itself, not a flat swatch. Make Rounds 1–3, lay the piece flat without stretching, and measure straight across from side to side, not diagonally.
Gauge: Rounds 1–3 = 2 in (5.1 cm) square.
Checkpoints (unblocked, measured side to side):
- After Round 1: 1 in (2.5 cm)
- After Round 2: 1.5 in (3.8 cm)
- After Round 3: 2 in (5.1 cm)
- After Round 4: 2.5 in (6.4 cm)
- After Round 5: 3 in (7.6 cm)
- After Round 6: 3.2 in (8.1 cm)
- After Round 7: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) once blocked
If the motif is too big: Change to a 2.0 mm hook, or tighten your chain loops slightly.
If the motif is too small: Change to a 2.5 mm hook. Also check that your ch-3 loops aren’t pulled snug, because tight loops shrink the mesh quickly.
Small differences of 0.1 in (0.3 cm) can be fixed during blocking. Larger differences should be fixed with a hook change.

Pattern
Each round begins in or next to a corner. The beg ch 3 counts as the first dc throughout.
Round 1 (Center)
Make a magic ring. Alternatively, ch 4 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring.
Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 3. *3 dc in ring, ch 3*; rep from * 2 more times. Sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Pull the ring closed tightly.
Count: 12 dc in four 3-dc groups, plus 4 ch-3 corner sps.
Round 2 (First Mesh Round)
Sl st in the next 2 dc and into the corner sp.
Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same sp. This completes the first corner group.
*Ch 3, sc in the center dc of the next 3-dc group, ch 3, corner group in the next corner sp*. Rep from * 2 more times.
Ch 3, sc in the center dc of the last 3-dc group, ch 3. Sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Count: 24 dc, 4 sc, 8 ch-3 loops, and 4 ch-3 corner sps. Each side has 2 loops.
Round 3
Sl st in the next 2 dc and into the corner sp.
Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same sp.
*(Ch 3, sc in next ch-3 loop) across to the next corner, ch 3, corner group in the corner sp*. Rep from * 2 more times.
(Ch 3, sc in next ch-3 loop) across the last side, ch 3. Sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Count: 24 dc, 8 sc, 12 ch-3 loops, and 4 corner sps. Each side has 3 loops.
You will now see the first diamonds forming. Each sc sits at the bottom point of a diamond, and the loops on either side form its edges.
Round 4
Work as for Round 3.
Count: 24 dc, 12 sc, 16 ch-3 loops, and 4 corner sps. Each side has 4 loops.
Round 5
Work as for Round 3.
Count: 24 dc, 16 sc, 20 ch-3 loops, and 4 corner sps. Each side has 5 loops.
Checkpoint: The motif should measure 3 in (7.6 cm) square, unblocked.
The total dc stays at 24 in every mesh round. Each new corner group replaces the one below it, while each side gains one loop per round. That steady loop growth is what keeps the square flat.
Border
The border is worked in two rounds. Round 6 converts the lacy edge into a solid row of single crochet. Round 7 adds the scalloped shell trim.
Border gauge: Round 6 has 25 sc per side, corners included, across about 3.2 in (8.1 cm). That works out to roughly 7.8 sc per inch.
Round 6 (Conversion Round)
This is a trim round, not a growth round. You work one sc into each existing dc, a fixed 3 sc into each loop, and 3 sc into each corner. The sc stitches from Round 5 are skipped, because they are hidden inside the loops.
Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the join and in the next 2 dc. 3 sc in the corner sp, then sc in the next 3 dc.
*3 sc in each of the next 5 ch-3 loops, sc in the next 3 dc, 3 sc in the corner sp, sc in the next 3 dc*. Rep from * 2 more times.
3 sc in each of the last 5 ch-3 loops. Sl st to the first sc.
Place a marker in the center sc of each 3-sc corner.
Count: (24 sc worked 1 per existing dc) + (20 loops × 3 sc = 60 sc) + (4 corners × 3 sc = 12 sc) = 96 sc.
Per side: 3 dc + 15 loop sc + 3 dc = 21 sc between the corner sps. Add 1 flanking sc from each corner to get 23 sts between the marked corner sts. Including both marked corners, each side has 25 sts.
Check: 4 sides × 25 = 100. Subtract the 4 corner sts that are each shared by two sides, and you get 96. ✓
Checkpoint: 3.2 in (8.1 cm) square.
Round 7 (Shell Trim)
Sl st in the next 4 sc. You are now in the first marked corner st.
Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the same st. This completes the first corner shell.
*Skip 2 sts, sc in next st, (skip 2 sts, shell in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st) 3 times, skip 2 sts, corner shell in the marked corner st*. Rep from * 2 more times.
Skip 2 sts, sc in next st, (skip 2 sts, shell in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st) 3 times, skip 2 sts. Sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Fasten off.
Count: 4 corner shells (24 dc), 12 side shells (60 dc), 16 sc, and 4 ch-1 corner sps. That is 84 dc total.
Per side: 3 side shells and 4 sc, between 2 corner shells.
Why the math works: Each side has 23 sts between the marked corners. The side uses 2 skipped sts, then 1 sc, then three 6-st repeats (skip 2, shell, skip 2, sc), then 2 more skipped sts.
That gives 2 + 1 + (6 × 3) + 2 = 23. ✓ The shells end exactly at each corner, so every side is identical and the scallops sit symmetrically.
Final Blocking
- Weave in both ends along the backs of dc stitches. Avoid weaving through the open loops, where tails would show.
- Pin the motif face down on your blocking mat.
- Pin the four corner ch-1 sps first, forming a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) square. Measure both directions and the two diagonals. The diagonals should match each other at about 4.9 in (12.4 cm).
- Pin the top of each side shell outward so the scallops round out evenly.
- Use a pin or a blunt needle to open each diamond in the mesh into a clear shape.
- Mist the motif until it is damp all the way through, but not dripping.
- Let it dry completely, usually 2–4 hours. Remove the pins only when it is fully dry.
- For extra crispness, mist lightly with spray starch before drying.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- The motif measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm) on every side.
- Both diagonals are equal.
- The center ring is pulled fully closed.
- Each side shows 5 loops in Round 5.
- Round 6 has 96 sc, with 25 sts per side including corners.
- Each side has 3 side shells and 4 sc, with a corner shell at each corner.
- The diamond holes are evenly sized and open.
- The ends are secure and invisible from the front.
- The motif lies flat, with no ruffling or cupping.
Troubleshooting
The motif cups or curls up: Your chain loops are too tight. Loosen them, or go up 0.25 mm in hook size.
The motif ruffles: Your loops are too loose, or you have added an extra loop on one side. Recount the loops per side against the counts given for each round.
The shells don’t line up with the corners: Recount Round 6. Each corner-to-corner span must have exactly 23 sts. Missing or extra sc stitches throw off the 6-st repeat.
The corners look rounded instead of sharp: Make sure each corner group goes into the ch-3 sp, not into a dc. Pin the corners firmly when blocking.
The diamonds look lopsided: Work each sc fully into the loop rather than into a chain, and keep your tension even.
There is a gap at the join seam: Join to the top of the beg ch-3, not to the chain below it. Snug the ch 3 before continuing.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with a mild soap, then press out the water in a towel. Re-block flat to dry.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. Rounds 1–3 measure 2 in (5.1 cm), and Round 5 reaches 3 in (7.6 cm). Round 6 converts the edge to 96 sc and measures 3.2 in (8.1 cm). Round 7 adds three side shells per side, and blocking finishes the motif at 3.5 in (8.9 cm) square.
If every checkpoint matches, your Snowdrift motif will block into a crisp, even lace square.
Optional: If you love the look, several motifs could later be joined into a larger piece. The single motif above is the complete pattern.
