This curtain is made of long strands of lacy diamonds that hang from a rod and catch the light in a window. Each diamond holds nine rounded fan shells inside a fine chain frame. The diamonds link tip to tip, and every strand ends in a full, swinging tassel.
The sample uses two colors, a soft pastel pink and a deep chocolate brown, on alternating strands. The style is cottage-bohemian. It is airy enough to let sunlight through and has enough texture to look rich up close.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain is about 39 in (99.1 cm) wide and 69.75 in (177.2 cm) long from the top of the hanging loops to the tips of the tassels. Each diamond is 4 in (10.2 cm) wide and 5 in (12.7 cm) tall.
Here is how it’s built. You work each diamond flat in 5 rows of shells (1-2-3-2-1), then add one round of edging that forms the frame and the four points. Each new diamond joins to the one above it as you edge it. A hanging loop goes on the first diamond of each strand and a tassel goes on the last.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished curtain size: 39 in (99.1 cm) wide x 69.75 in (177.2 cm) long
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 96 diamonds (8 strands of 12), plus 8 tassels
- Layout: 8 strands side by side, alternating pink and brown, each 12 diamonds long
- Piece size: 4 in (10.2 cm) wide x 5 in (12.7 cm) tall, edged and blocked
- Size before border: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) wide x 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall
- Border depth: about 0.125 in (0.3 cm) at the sides, about 0.625 in (1.6 cm) at the top and bottom points
- Strand length (diamonds only): 62.75 in (159.4 cm)
Materials
Yarn: Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend at about 200 m per 100 g. Cotton keeps the shells crisp and hangs straight without stretching. Avoid fuzzy yarns, because they blur the fan texture.
- Color A, Pastel Pink: 320 g / 640 m (4 strands)
- Color B, Chocolate Brown: 320 g / 640 m (4 strands)
Each strand uses about 65 g / 130 m: 12 diamonds at about 5 g / 10 m each, plus about 5 g / 10 m for the tassel. The quantities above include a margin of about 20 to 25% for gauge differences and test pieces.
Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stiff card 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall, for tassels
– Rustproof pins and a blocking mat
– Spray bottle
– Measuring tape
– Curtain rod up to 1.25 in (3.2 cm) in diameter
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- sp(s) – space(s)
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
Special stitch:
– Shell (sh): 5 dc in the stitch named. The center stitch of a shell is its 3rd dc.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Make one full diamond before you start production. Gauge matters here because 12 diamonds stack in each strand, so small errors add up.
Shell gauge: 1 shell = 1.25 in (3.2 cm) wide across the top and 0.75 in (1.9 cm) tall.
Checkpoints:
– After Row 1: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) wide, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) tall
– After Row 3: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) wide, 2.25 in (5.7 cm) tall
– After Row 5: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) wide, 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall
– After the border and blocking: 4 in (10.2 cm) wide, 5 in (12.7 cm) tall
If your diamond is too big (more than 0.25 in / 0.6 cm over), go down to a 4.5 mm hook. If it’s too small, go up to a 5.5 mm hook. Make a new test diamond after any hook change.

Diamond Motif (make 96)
Rows 1 to 3 widen the diamond and Rows 4 and 5 narrow it. The shells stagger, so each new shell sits between two shells of the row below.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 4. Work 4 dc in the 4th ch from hook. The 3 skipped ch count as the first dc. Turn.
(1 shell = 5 dc)
The base of this shell is the bottom point of the diamond.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in first st (edge shell made). Ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc (center), ch 1, sk next dc, sh in top of turning ch. Turn.
(2 shells = 10 dc, 1 sc, 2 ch-1 sps)
Row 3 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in first st (edge shell made). Ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc (center of shell), ch 1, sk next 2 dc and ch-1 sp, sh in next sc. Ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp and 2 dc, sc in next dc (center of shell), ch 1, sk next dc, sh in top of turning ch. Turn.
(3 shells = 15 dc, 2 sc, 4 ch-1 sps)
Row 3 is the widest row. Its two edge shells form the side points.
Row 4 (WS): Sl st in first 3 dc. Ch 1, sc in same st (center of edge shell). Ch 1, sk next 2 dc and ch-1 sp, sh in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp and 2 dc, sc in next dc (center of shell). Repeat from * to * once more. Leave the last 2 dc unworked. Turn.
(2 shells = 10 dc, 3 sc, 4 ch-1 sps)
Row 5 (RS): Sl st in first sc, sl st in next ch-1 sp, sl st in next 3 dc. Ch 1, sc in same st (center of shell). Ch 1, sk next 2 dc and ch-1 sp, sh in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp and 2 dc, sc in next dc (center of shell). Leave the rest unworked.
(1 shell = 5 dc, 2 sc, 2 ch-1 sps)
Fasten off. The body of the diamond now has 9 shells in a 1-2-3-2-1 layout and measures 3.75 in (9.5 cm) square across its points.
Make All Pieces
Make 48 diamonds in Color A (pink) and 48 in Color B (brown). Work Rows 1 to 5 for all of them. Add the border as you build each strand, because the border round is also the join.
Layout grid (A = pink, B = brown; columns are strands, rows are diamonds from top to bottom):
Strand: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Row 1: A B A B A B A B
Row 2: A B A B A B A B
... (repeat for all 12 rows)
Row 12: A B A B A B A B
Tassel: A B A B A B A B
Each strand uses a single color: 12 diamonds plus 1 tassel.
Border (Edging Round)
The border makes the chain frame and pulls the shell body into a sharp diamond. The curtain has no outer border. Each diamond is edged on its own and the strands hang free.
Border gauge: One ch-2 sp plus 1 sc covers about 0.6 in (1.5 cm) along an upper side. One ch-3 sp plus 1 sc covers about 0.9 in (2.3 cm) along a lower side. Each finished side measures about 3.2 in (8.1 cm).
With RS facing, join yarn in the center (3rd) dc of the Row 5 shell.
Top point: Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the same st.
Upper side 1: Ch 2, sc in the 5th dc of the same shell. Ch 2, sc in the end sc of Row 5. Ch 2, sc in the outer dc of the Row 4 edge shell. Ch 2, sc in the end sc of Row 4. Ch 2.
(4 sc, 5 ch-2 sps)
Side point 1: (Sc, ch 3, sc) in the outer dc (or turning ch) of the Row 3 edge shell.
Lower side 1: Ch 3, sc around the post of the outer dc of Row 2. Ch 3, sc around the post of the outer dc of Row 1. Ch 3.
(2 sc, 3 ch-3 sps)
Bottom point: (Sc, ch 3, sc) in the foundation ch at the base of Row 1.
Lower side 2: Ch 3, sc around the outer post of Row 1. Ch 3, sc around the outer post of Row 2. Ch 3.
(2 sc, 3 ch-3 sps)
Side point 2: (Sc, ch 3, sc) in the outer dc of the Row 3 edge shell.
Upper side 2: Ch 2, sc in the end sc of Row 4. Ch 2, sc in the outer dc of the Row 4 edge shell. Ch 2, sc in the end sc of Row 5. Ch 2, sc in the 1st dc of the Row 5 shell. Ch 2, sl st to the first sc. Fasten off.
(4 sc, 5 ch-2 sps)
Round total: 20 sc, 10 ch-2 sps, 6 side ch-3 sps and 4 point ch-3 loops.
– Check: 4 points x 2 sc = 8 sc, plus 2 upper sides x 4 sc = 8 sc, plus 2 lower sides x 2 sc = 4 sc. That gives 20 sc.
Why the math works: The lower sides run straight up the stepped edges of the growth rows, so 2 anchors with longer ch-3 spans are enough. The upper sides follow the inset ends of the decrease rows, which have more corners to hold flat, so they use 4 anchors with shorter ch-2 spans. Both routes come out to about 3.2 in (8.1 cm). This keeps the diamond symmetrical and the side points level.
Joining
Diamonds join point to point as you work the border. You don’t need any sewing.
Top diamond of each strand: Work the border as written, but at the top point work (sc, ch 20, sc) instead of (sc, ch 3, sc). This hanging loop drops about 2 in (5.1 cm) and fits a rod up to 1.25 in (3.2 cm) in diameter.
Each following diamond: Work the border as written, but at the top point do this: sc, ch 1, sl st into the bottom-point ch-3 loop of the diamond above, ch 1, sc.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: The ch 1 + sl st + ch 1 replaces the ch-3 loop, so each diamond still has exactly 20 sc. The join adds no stitches. It links one loop to one loop, which makes the small, tight knot you see between the diamonds.
Tension: Keep the two joining chains snug. Loose chains let the diamonds twist and stretch the strand. The finished joint should be about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) long, so each diamond plus its joint measures 5.25 in (13.3 cm).
Size checkpoints:
– After 4 joined diamonds: 4 x 5 in + 3 x 0.25 in = 20.75 in (52.7 cm)
– After 12 joined diamonds: 12 x 5 in + 11 x 0.25 in = 62.75 in (159.4 cm)
Tassels (make 8, 1 per strand in the matching color): Wrap yarn 30 times around the 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card. Slide a 6 in (15.2 cm) strand under the wraps at the top and tie it tight. Cut the wraps at the bottom. Wrap a separate strand tightly around the tassel 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top, knot it, and hide the ends inside. Trim the tassel to 5 in (12.7 cm). Use the top ties to knot the tassel through the bottom-point ch-3 loop of the last diamond.
Curtain checkpoint: Hang the 8 strands about 1 in (2.5 cm) apart: 8 x 4 in + 7 x 1 in = 39 in (99.1 cm) wide. Total length: 2 in + 62.75 in + 5 in = 69.75 in (177.2 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends before blocking. Work each tail through the shell stitches of its own color.
- Soak the strands in cool water for 10 minutes. Press out the water gently without wringing.
- Lay one strand flat on the blocking mat. Pin each diamond to 4 in (10.2 cm) wide and 5 in (12.7 cm) tall, with a pin at all four points.
- Open each fan shell with your fingertips so it lies round and full.
- Check that the joints measure 0.25 in (0.6 cm) and that the strand runs straight.
- Let it dry completely. For the last hour you can hang it on the rod so it drops naturally.
- Steam the tassels lightly and trim any uneven strands.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every diamond has 9 shells in a 1-2-3-2-1 layout.
- Every border has 20 sc and four clean points.
- Diamonds measure 4 in x 5 in (10.2 cm x 12.7 cm), within 0.25 in (0.6 cm).
- Each strand has 12 diamonds and measures 62.75 in (159.4 cm).
- The joints are tight, the same length, and not twisted.
- Colors alternate pink, brown, pink, brown across the 8 strands.
- The hanging loops are all the same length, so the diamonds line up across the curtain.
- The tassels measure 5 in (12.7 cm) and hang straight.
- All ends are woven in securely.
Troubleshooting
Shells look flat or cupped: Check that you skip exactly 2 dc and the ch-1 sp on each side of a shell. Skipping too few makes the shells ruffle, and skipping too many flattens them.
Diamond is lopsided: The turning ch-3 is probably too tight or too loose compared with your dc. Match its height to your dc.
Side points don’t form: Make sure the side-point (sc, ch 3, sc) goes into the outer dc of Row 3, not Row 2 or Row 4.
Strand twists when hanging: Check that every diamond was joined with RS facing the same way.
Strands are different lengths: Measure after every 4 diamonds and compare with the 20.75 in (52.7 cm) checkpoint.
Frame chains sag: Go down 0.5 mm in hook size for the border round only.
Care
Hand wash cold and dry flat, pinned to size. You can reshape the tassels with a little steam.

Final Notes
Everything in this curtain comes back to one measurement chain. A 1.25 in (3.2 cm) shell builds a 3.75 in (9.5 cm) body. The border brings that body to a 4 in x 5 in (10.2 cm x 12.7 cm) diamond. Twelve diamonds joined with 0.25 in (0.6 cm) links make a 62.75 in (159.4 cm) strand. Eight strands spaced 1 in (2.5 cm) apart give a curtain 39 in (99.1 cm) wide. If you check your gauge at the first diamond and again at every 4th joined diamond, the whole curtain will hang evenly.
Happy crocheting!
