Coral Leaf Lattice Curtain Crochet Pattern

This curtain panel is a grid of coral leaves set in a deep teal lace mesh. Each leaf is a pointed oval with a raised center vein. The teal mesh around it is made of chain loops that meet in small cluster junctions. A solid teal band with tabs runs across the top, and coral tassels on teal chain drops hang from the bottom edge.

The strong coral-and-teal contrast stands out against window light. The mesh lets light through, and the leaves add color and some privacy. The style is boho, but the construction is just one simple motif repeated.

All instructions use US crochet terms. The finished panel measures 33 in (83.8 cm) wide and 35.5 in (90.2 cm) long, from the top of the band to the bottom edge. The tab loops add 1.75 in (4.4 cm) above the band, and the tassels add 3.75 in (9.5 cm) below it.

You make 78 identical motifs and join them as you go, 13 across and 6 down. Each motif starts as a coral leaf worked around a foundation chain. Two teal rounds then turn it into a rectangle. After that, you work one teal round around the whole panel, then the top band, the tabs, and the tassel fringe.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 33 in x 35.5 in (83.8 cm x 90.2 cm), not including tabs and fringe
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: DK (#3), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (US E-4)
  • Number of pieces: 78 motifs joined into one panel
  • Layout: 13 motifs across x 6 motifs down
  • Motif size (blocked): 2.5 in x 5.5 in (6.4 cm x 14.0 cm)
  • Size before border: 32.5 in x 33 in (82.6 cm x 83.8 cm)
  • Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on the sides and bottom; 2.25 in (5.7 cm) at the top, including the band

Materials

Use a smooth mercerized cotton or a cotton blend in DK weight. Cotton shows the stitches clearly, holds its shape after blocking, and stands up well to sunlight. The amounts below assume 50 g / 120 m (131 yd) balls.

  • Coral (Color A): 250 g, about 600 m (656 yd), for the leaves and tassels
  • Teal (Color B): 350 g, about 840 m (919 yd), for the frames, border, band, tabs, and drops

These amounts include a margin of about 15% for your gauge swatch and in case of dye-lot differences. Buy each color from one dye lot.

Tools:
– 3.5 mm (US E-4) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Stitch markers
– Scissors
– A piece of card 2 in (5.1 cm) wide, for the tassels
– Blocking mats, rustproof pins, spray bottle
– Tape measure

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp(s) – space(s)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS / WS – right side / wrong side

Corner cluster: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same chain loop.

Joining loop: ch 2, sl st into the matching ch-5 loop of the neighboring motif, ch 2. Use this in place of a ch 5.

Joining corner: (3 dc, ch 1, sl st into the neighbor’s corner ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 dc). Use this in place of a corner cluster.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Make one complete motif and block it before you start the panel. Gauge affects the final size more than anything else in this pattern.

  • Border gauge: 19 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), worked into chain loops
  • After Leaf Round 2: about 1.5 in x 4 in (3.8 cm x 10.2 cm)
  • After Round 3: about 2 in x 5 in (5.1 cm x 12.7 cm)
  • After Round 4, blocked: 2.5 in x 5.5 in (6.4 cm x 14.0 cm)

Too big: A motif that is 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide makes the panel 35.75 in (90.8 cm) wide before the border. Switch to a 3.25 mm hook, or make your chains tighter.

Too small: Switch to a 3.75 mm hook. Tight chain loops are the most common cause, so first try chaining a little more loosely.

The leaf should lie flat after Round 2. If it cups, your tr stitches are too short. If it ruffles, they are too tall.

Motif Pattern

Leaf (Color A)

Round 1: Ch 16. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 3 ch, tr in next 3 ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in last ch (15 sts). Ch 2 for the tip. Turn the piece and work along the other side of the foundation chain: sc in first ch, hdc in next 2, dc in next 3, tr in next 3, dc in next 3, hdc in next 2, sc in last ch (15 sts). Ch 2, sl st to first sc. (30 sts and 2 ch-2 tip sps)

Both sides grow out of the same foundation chain, which makes the raised center vein. The tall tr in the middle and the short sc at each end shape the pointed oval.

Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in each st around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-2 tip sp. Sl st to first sc. (34 sc and 2 ch-2 sps) Each long side now has 17 sc from tip to tip, counting 1 sc from each tip group. Fasten off Color A.

Frame (Color B)

Round 3: Join Color B in the top ch-2 tip sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 5, sc) in the same sp. This is the top tip loop.

Along the first side, ch 5, sk 3 sts, sc in next st 4 times, so the sc land in sts 4, 8, 12, and 16 of the 17. Ch 5, sk the last st, then (sc, ch 5, sc) in the bottom tip sp.

Work the second side the same way. End with ch 5, sk the last st, and sl st to first sc. (12 ch-5 loops and 12 sc)

Label the loops as follows: T (top tip), A1–A5 down the first side, B (bottom tip), and C1–C5 up the second side. A1, A5, C1, and C5 will become the corners.

Round 4: Sl st into the first 3 ch of loop T. Ch 1, sc in loop T, ch 5. Corner cluster in A1, ch 5. [Sc in next loop, ch 5] in A2, A3, and A4. Corner cluster in A5, ch 5. Sc in B, ch 5. Corner cluster in C1, ch 5. [Sc in next loop, ch 5] in C2, C3, and C4. Corner cluster in C5, ch 5. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Round 4 count: 12 ch-5 loops, 4 corner ch-3 sps, 8 sc, 24 dc.
– Short (top and bottom) edges: 2 ch-5 loops between the corners
– Long sides: 4 ch-5 loops between the corners

The motif is now a tall rectangle. Its corner clusters will form the junctions where 4 motifs meet.

Make All Pieces

Finish the first motif completely. Work the other 77 through Round 3, then work their Round 4 as you join them.

  • Color A: 78 leaves (Rounds 1–2)
  • Color B: 78 frames (Rounds 3–4)

Layout grid (13 across x 6 down, M = motif, all tips vertical):

Row 1: M M M M M M M M M M M M M
Row 2: M M M M M M M M M M M M M
Row 3: M M M M M M M M M M M M M
Row 4: M M M M M M M M M M M M M
Row 5: M M M M M M M M M M M M M
Row 6: M M M M M M M M M M M M M

Joining

Join each motif during its Round 4. Work Row 1 from left to right, then start each new row below the first motif of the row above.

Long sides (to the motif on the left): There are 6 join points: the first corner, 4 loops, and the second corner. Use a joining corner at each corner and a joining loop in place of each ch 5. Each loop joins to exactly one loop, so no stitches are added or lost.

Short edges (to the motif above): There are 4 join points: the first corner, 2 loops, and the second corner.

4-way junctions: When a corner meets corners that are already joined, sl st into the same spot the earlier joins used. This locks all 4 clusters at one point.

Tension: Each joining loop (ch 2, sl st, ch 2) should be the same size as a regular ch 5. Joins that are too tight make the mesh pucker, and joins that are too loose let the leaves drift out of line.

Size checkpoint: When lightly stretched, Row 1 should measure 32.5 in (82.6 cm) across. After all 6 rows, the panel should measure 32.5 in x 33 in (82.6 cm x 83.8 cm).

Border

Border gauge: 19 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm).

Border Round 1 counts per motif:
– Short edge: 1 sc in the corner sp, 5 sc in each of the 2 loops, 1 sc in the next corner sp = 12 sc. This count includes the edge’s 2 corner sts.
– Long side: 1 sc in the corner sp, 6 sc in each of the 4 loops, 1 sc in the next corner sp = 26 sc. This count includes the side’s 2 corner sts.

Work only into the spaces. Skip the 3-dc groups and the single sc between loops. At each seam, work 1 sc in each motif’s corner sp; on a joined corner, use the ch-1 sp on the outer edge. Don’t add any extra stitches at the seams.

Round 1 (Color B): Join in the top-right corner sp of the panel and ch 1. Work along each edge, with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of the 4 outer panel corners. The first sc of each pair ends one side, and the second sc starts the next side. Sl st to first sc.

  • Top: 13 x 12 = 156 sc
  • Bottom: 13 x 12 = 156 sc
  • Each side: 6 x 26 = 156 sc
  • Total: 624 sc plus 4 ch-2 corner sps

Fasten off.

Why the math works: 156 sc over 32.5 in (82.6 cm) is 4.8 sc per inch, and 156 sc over 33 in (83.8 cm) is 4.73 sc per inch. Both are close to the border gauge of 4.75 sc per inch, so the edges won’t flare or pull in.

Top Band (Color B, worked in rows across the top only)

Row 1: With RS facing, join in the top-right corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc) in that sp. Dc in each of the 156 sc, then dc in the top-left corner ch-2 sp. (156 + 2 = 158 dc)

Rows 2–4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, dc in each st across. (158 dc) The band is now about 2 in (5.1 cm) deep. Fasten off.

Tabs

There are 13 tabs, one centered over each motif column. Each tab is 6 sts wide with 6 sts between tabs. Across the 158 sts: 1 + 3 + (13 x 6) + (12 x 6) + 3 + 1 = 1 + 3 + 78 + 72 + 3 + 1 = 158.

Tab: Sk the first 4 sts of Row 4 and join Color B in the 5th st. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in the next 5 sts. (6 sc) Repeat (ch 1, turn, sc in each sc) 19 more times, for 20 rows and about 3.5 in (8.9 cm). Fasten off, leaving a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Fold the tab to the WS and sew its last row to the top of band Row 2. This makes a 1.75 in (4.4 cm) loop that fits a rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) thick.

For each of the other 12 tabs, sk 6 sts after the previous tab and join in the next st.

Tassel Fringe

There are 14 drops: one at each bottom corner and one at each of the 12 column seams.

Drop: Join Color B in a bottom corner ch-2 sp, or between the 2 sc at a seam (after every 12th sc). Ch 12, which is about 2 in (5.1 cm). Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.

Tassel: Wrap Color A 20 times around the 2 in (5.1 cm) card. Tie the bundle at the top through the last chain of a drop. Use the Color B tail to wrap the neck tightly 0.375 in (1.0 cm) below the top. Cut the loops at the bottom and trim the tassel to 1.75 in (4.4 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends along the teal chain loops.
  2. Soak the panel, then roll it in a towel and press out the water. Don’t wring it.
  3. Lay the panel flat and pin the corners to 33 in x 35.5 in (83.8 cm x 90.2 cm).
  4. Pin the sides and bottom straight, placing a pin at every seam, 2.5 in (6.4 cm) apart along the bottom.
  5. Check that each motif measures 2.5 in x 5.5 in (6.4 cm x 14.0 cm) and that the columns run straight.
  6. Gently pull each leaf tip into a clean point.
  7. Straighten the tassels and let the panel dry completely before unpinning.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • 78 motifs, 13 across and 6 down
  • Every leaf is vertical, with a clear center vein
  • Every 4-way junction is locked at a single point
  • Border Round 1 has 156 sc per side and ch-2 corners
  • Band has 4 rows of 158 dc
  • 13 tabs, centered over the columns
  • 14 tassels of equal length
  • Panel blocks to 33 in x 35.5 in (83.8 cm x 90.2 cm)

Troubleshooting

  • Leaf is lopsided: Check that both sides of Round 1 use the same stitch sequence.
  • Mesh puckers at the joins: Your joining chains are too tight. Chain more loosely.
  • Gaps at 4-way junctions: Each corner was joined to a different spot. Always sl st into the first join point.
  • Border ripples: Extra stitches were added at seams. Recount to 12 sc per short edge and 26 per long side.
  • Band is narrower than the panel: Use a hook one size larger for the band rows only.
  • Tabs are off-center: Recount the 4 skipped sts at the start and the 6-st gaps.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then reshape and dry flat. Keep it out of strong direct sun for long stretches so the coral doesn’t fade.

Final Notes

The measurement chain is simple. A 2.5 in x 5.5 in (6.4 cm x 14.0 cm) motif, repeated 13 across and 6 down, gives 32.5 in x 33 in (82.6 cm x 83.8 cm). The 0.25 in (0.6 cm) border round brings the width to 33 in (83.8 cm). Together with the 2 in (5.1 cm) band, it brings the length to 35.5 in (90.2 cm). If your first motif blocks to the right size, the whole panel will too.

Happy crocheting!
