This pineapple bag holder is a cheerful way to tame a drawer full of plastic bags. It’s a tall tube with a round base. Raised cream diagonal lines form diamonds, and a plump popcorn bobble sits in the middle of each one. A crown of sage-green leaves finishes the top, and a wooden ring lets it hang from any hook.
The sample is made in cream, butter yellow and sage green. A peach version looks just as sweet: swap the yellow for apricot and change nothing else. The style is farmhouse-kitchen with a bit of retro fruit charm.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished holder is 6 in (15.2 cm) wide when laid flat, 12 in (30.5 cm) around, and 14.5 in (36.8 cm) tall. The leaf tips reach 15.75 in (40.0 cm).
You start with a flat circle for the base, then work up into a tube. The lower band has a split section that forms the opening for pulling out bags. Next comes the yellow body, with popcorns placed on a half-drop grid. Cream lattice lines are added afterwards with surface slip stitch. Last, you work the top band, the edge around the opening, eight leaves and a hanging strap.
Finished Size and Construction

Materials
Use a smooth worsted cotton or cotton blend. Cotton keeps the popcorns rounded and the lattice crisp, and it stands up to kitchen use. Weights are based on about 85 m per 50 g.
- Cream (A): 90 g / 153 m
- Yellow or peach (B): 170 g / 289 m
- Sage green (C): 40 g / 68 m
All quantities include a margin of about 15 percent.
Tools:
– 5 mm (H-8) hook
– 5.5 mm (I-9) hook
– 3 in (7.6 cm) wooden ring
– Locking stitch markers
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Pins for placing the leaves
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- BLO – back loop only
- MR – magic ring
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
Popcorn (pc): Work 5 dc in the same st. Remove the hook from the loop. Insert the hook from front to back through the top of the first dc, catch the dropped loop and pull it through. A popcorn counts as 1 st.
Surface slip stitch (surf sl st): Hold the yarn inside the tube. Insert the hook from the RS through the fabric, pull up a loop, then draw it through the loop on your hook.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 16 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm) with the 5 mm hook, in joined rounds.
Before starting the holder, work the base (Rounds 1–8) as a test piece. It should measure 3.75 in (9.5 cm) across. Check these measurements as you go:
- After Round 8: base is 3.75 in (9.5 cm) across.
- After Round 24: wall is 4 in (10.2 cm) tall, and the tube is 6 in (15.2 cm) wide when flattened.
- After Round 64: wall is 14 in (35.6 cm) tall.
- After Round 66: wall is 14.5 in (36.8 cm) tall.
If your piece is too big, go down a half or full hook size. If it’s too small, go up a size. The popcorns pop outward, so they don’t add height. If the yellow section grows faster than 4 rounds per inch (2.5 cm), tighten the sc between popcorns.

Pattern
All rounds are joined: finish each round with a sl st into the first sc, then ch 1 to start the next. The ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Number the stitches from 1 to 48, where st 1 is the first sc after the join. Mark st 1 on every round.
Base (Color A)
Round 1: 6 sc in MR, join. (6)
Round 2: Inc in each st. (12)
Round 3: Sc 1, inc 6 times. (18)
Round 4: Sc 2, inc 6 times. (24)
Round 5: Sc 3, inc 6 times. (30)
Round 6: Sc 4, inc 6 times. (36)
Round 7: Sc 5, inc 6 times. (42)
Round 8: Sc 6, inc 6 times. (48)
Checkpoint: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) across, lying flat.
Lower Band and Bag Opening (Color A)
Round 9: Sc BLO in each st. (48) This makes a crisp ridge where the base turns up into the wall.
Rounds 10–12: Sc in each st. (48)
Now work back and forth over 34 stitches to make the opening. Leave sts 35–48 unworked.
Row 13 (RS): Ch 1, sc in sts 1–34, turn. (34)
Rows 14–21: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn after every row except Row 21. (34) Even rows are WS and odd rows are RS. Row 21 is RS and ends at st 34.
Close the tube: Ch 14, then sl st into the first sc of Row 21.
Round 22: Ch 1, sc in each of the 34 sc, then sc in each of the 14 ch. Join. (34 + 14 = 48)
Rounds 23–24: Sc in each st. (48)
The opening is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) wide (14 sts) and 2.25 in (5.7 cm) tall (9 rows). It sits 1 in (2.5 cm) above the base and is centered between sts 41 and 42, which is the front of the holder. The back center is between sts 17 and 18.
Checkpoint: wall is 4 in (10.2 cm) tall, and the tube is 6 in (15.2 cm) wide flat.
Popcorn Body (Color B)
Join Color B. Each popcorn round contains 6 popcorns.
Rounds 25–26: Sc in each st. (48)
Round 27 (Popcorn Round A): Sc 3, pc, sc 4 6 times. (48) Popcorns land on sts 4, 12, 20, 28, 36 and 44.
Rounds 28–30: Sc in each st. (48)
Round 31 (Popcorn Round B): Sc 7, pc 6 times. (48) Popcorns land on sts 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48.
Rounds 32–34: Sc in each st. (48)
Rounds 35–64: Repeat Rounds 27–34 three more times, then repeat Rounds 27–32 once more. (48 on every round)
This gives Popcorn Round A on Rounds 27, 35, 43, 51 and 59, and Popcorn Round B on Rounds 31, 39, 47, 55 and 63. Rounds 25–64 make 40 yellow rounds with 60 popcorns in total. Each popcorn is 8 sts from the next one in its round, and each round shifts the popcorns over by 4 sts. That half-drop placement is what produces the diamond grid.
Checkpoint: wall is 14 in (35.6 cm) tall. Fasten off B.
Top Band (Color A)
Rounds 65–66: Join A. Sc in each st. (48) Fasten off.
Lattice Lines (Color A, 5.5 mm hook)
There are 12 lines. Each one is worked from Round 25 up to Round 64, with exactly 1 surf sl st per round (40 surf sl st per line). The larger hook stops the lines from puckering.
- Set 1 (6 lines): Begin on Round 25 at sts 6, 14, 22, 30, 38 and 46. On each round above, place the next surf sl st 1 st forward, in the same direction you crocheted the rounds. Each line finishes on Round 64.
- Set 2 (6 lines): Begin on Round 25 at sts 2, 10, 18, 26, 34 and 42. On each round above, place the next surf sl st 1 st back. Each line finishes on Round 64.
To check placement on Round 27: the Set 2 line sits at st 48 and the Set 1 line sits at st 8, so the popcorn on st 4 is centered between them. The two sets cross on Round 27 at sts 8, 16, 24 and so on, and again 4 rounds later at sts 4, 12, 20 and so on. Each diamond is 8 sts wide and 8 rounds tall, 2 in x 2 in (5.1 cm x 5.1 cm), with one popcorn in the center.
Pull each tail to the inside and weave it in.
Leaves (Make 8, Color C, 5 mm hook)
Ch 10.
Side 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work sc, hdc, dc in each of the next 4 ch, hdc, sc. (8 sts in chs 2–9)
Base: 3 sc in the last ch. (3)
Side 2: Working along the other side of the foundation chain, work sc, hdc, dc in each of the next 4 ch, hdc, sc. (8)
Tip: In the skipped ch at the tip, work (sl st, ch 2, sl st). Sl st into the first sc to join. (19 sts plus the ch-2 tip)
Each leaf is 2.25 in (5.7 cm) long and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide. The foundation chain makes a center vein. To make the vein stand out more, add a surface slip stitch line in C from the base to the tip. Leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail for sewing.
Strap (Color A)
Ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (6)
Rows 2–24: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st. (6)
The strap is 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide and 6 in (15.2 cm) long. Thread it through the wooden ring and fold it in half. Sew both ends to the inside of the top back edge over sts 15–20, overlapping the top 1 in (2.5 cm) of the wall. The ring will sit about 2 in (5.1 cm) above the edge.
Attaching the Leaves
Center the base of each leaf over these stitch pairs: 5–6, 11–12, 17–18, 23–24, 29–30, 35–36, 41–42 and 47–48. That puts one leaf every 6 sts, or 1.5 in (3.8 cm), so 8 leaves cover the 12 in (30.5 cm) top exactly, with their edges just touching.
Pin each leaf so its lower 1 in (2.5 cm) lies over Rounds 63–66. Sew the base and lower sides in place, and leave the top 1.25 in (3.2 cm) free above the edge. The back leaf covers the strap seam.
Border: Top Band and Opening Edge
Border gauge: same as the body, 4 sc and 4 rounds per inch (2.5 cm).
Top band: Rounds 65–66 are 48 sc each, 24 sts across the front and 24 across the back. The band keeps exactly the body count, so the top neither flares nor pulls in. Two rounds add 0.5 in (1.3 cm), taking the wall from 14 in (35.6 cm) to 14.5 in (36.8 cm).
Opening edge (Color A, 5 mm hook): Join A at the bottom-right corner of the opening and work 1 round of sc as follows:
- Bottom edge: 14 sc, one in each unworked st 35–48 of Round 12.
- Side 1: 9 sc, one in each row end of Rows 13–21.
- Top edge: 14 sc, one in the underside of each of the 14 ch.
- Side 2: 9 sc, one in each row end.
Join. (14 + 9 + 14 + 9 = 46)
Why the math works: each row end equals one row and each chain equals one stitch, so every side gets exactly one sc per unit of fabric. The top and bottom edges match at 14 sts, and the sides match at 9. Because there are no extra corner stitches, the corners stay soft and the opening keeps its oval shape. If the opening ripples, sc2tog once at each corner, which gives 42 sts.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends, including the 24 tails from the lattice lines.
- Mist the holder lightly with water until it is damp, not soaked.
- Roll a towel to about 4 in (10.2 cm) across and slide it inside the tube.
- Shape the tube to 6 in (15.2 cm) wide flat and 14.5 in (36.8 cm) tall.
- Press the base flat over a plate or a cardboard circle cut to 3.75 in (9.5 cm).
- Pin the leaves upright so their tips stand 1.25 in (3.2 cm) above the edge, and pinch each tip to a point.
- Leave it to dry completely before removing the towel.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Base is 3.75 in (9.5 cm) across and lies flat.
- [ ] Every round from 9 to 66 has 48 sts.
- [ ] The opening is 3.5 in x 2.25 in (8.9 cm x 5.7 cm) with 46 edge sc.
- [ ] There are 60 popcorns, all pushed to the RS.
- [ ] There are 12 lattice lines, each with 40 surf sl st, and every popcorn is centered in a diamond.
- [ ] 8 leaves are spaced every 6 sts.
- [ ] The strap is sewn securely and the ring hangs straight.
- [ ] Height is 14.5 in (36.8 cm), and 15.75 in (40.0 cm) to the leaf tips.
Troubleshooting
Popcorns sink to the inside: make sure you insert the hook from front to back when you close each popcorn, then push it outward with a finger.
Lattice puckers: use the 5.5 mm hook, or even 6 mm, and loosen each surf sl st.
Lines miss the diamond centers: count from the marked st 1 on Round 25. Pull out the line and restart it.
Joining seam drifts: always ch 1 and work the first sc into the same st as the join.
Opening gapes: work the chain loosely. If it is still too wide, sc2tog at the corners of the edging round.
Leaves curl: block them flat with pins, or add a surface vein line to stiffen them.
Care
Hand wash in cool water and lay the holder flat to dry. Reshape the leaves while they are damp.

Final Notes
The measurement chain runs like this. The base finishes at 48 sts and 3.75 in (9.5 cm). The wall reaches 4 in (10.2 cm) at Round 24 and 14 in (35.6 cm) at Round 64. The top band brings it to 14.5 in (36.8 cm), and the leaf tips reach 15.75 in (40.0 cm). The stitch count stays at 48 from Round 8 onward, so the popcorn grid, the lattice lines and the leaf spacing all divide evenly into it. Hang the holder by its ring, fill it from the top, and pull bags from the opening at the bottom.
Happy crocheting!
