This hanging charm is a flat evil-eye motif with a scalloped royal blue edge. It hangs from a blue loop and has two tassels at the bottom. Hang it on a door handle, a window latch, a branch or a hook by the entryway.
The colors follow the traditional evil-eye order: a black center, then turquoise, a white ring and deep royal blue. Three natural wooden beads add some warmth. One tassel is turquoise and one is royal blue, so the bottom echoes the colors of the motif.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The motif measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across, scallops included. The whole charm measures about 11.5 in (29.2 cm) from the top of the loop to the tips of the tassels.
You will work six joined rounds in the round, with a color change at each ring. Then you make three slip-stitch cords and two tassels, add the beads and sew everything to the back of the motif.

Materials
Mercerized cotton works best here. It gives crisp stitch definition, firm scallops and tassels that hang straight. Acrylic DK also works, but the scallops will be a little softer.
- Black: 2 g / 5 m (center)
- Turquoise: 10 g / 23 m (Rounds 2–3, plus 1 tassel)
- White: 4 g / 9 m (Round 4)

These quantities include a margin of about 20%, so you have room for gauge swatches and tassel trimming.
Tools
- 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
- 3 natural wooden beads, 12 mm (1.2 cm), with a hole of at least 4 mm (0.4 cm)
- Stiff card 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall, for tassels
- Tapestry needle
- Sharp scissors
- Stitch marker
- Ruler or tape measure
- Blocking mat and rust-proof pins
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
- MR – magic ring
Special stitch: Shell. Work 5 dc into the same stitch.
Note: A starting ch 3 counts as 1 dc throughout. Join each round with a sl st into the top of the starting ch 3.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Crochet the motif first, before you make any cords or tassels. Its size sets the scale for everything else. Measure flat and unblocked, across the center.
- After Round 1: 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
- After Round 2: 1.25 in (3.2 cm)
- After Round 3: 1.75 in (4.4 cm)
- After Round 4: 2.25 in (5.7 cm)
- After Round 5: 2.75 in (7.0 cm)
- After Round 6: 3.5 in (8.9 cm)
Each dc round adds about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) to the diameter.
Cord gauge: 11 ch = 2 in (5.1 cm).
If the motif is too big by more than 1/4 in (0.6 cm) at Round 3, go down to a 3.25 mm hook. If it is too small, go up to a 3.75 mm hook. If it cups, your tension is too tight; loosen up or go up a hook size. If it ruffles, check your stitch count first, then go down a hook size.

Motif
Round 1 (black)
Make a MR. Ch 3, then work 11 dc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and join. (12 sts) Fasten off.
Round 2 (turquoise)
Join turquoise in any st. Ch 3, then 1 dc in the same st. Work 2 dc in each remaining st around, and join. (24 sts)
Round 3 (turquoise)
Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the next st. Dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st. Rep from * 10 more times, and join. (36 sts) Fasten off.
Round 4 (white)
Join white in any st. Ch 3, dc in the next st, then 2 dc in the next st. Dc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st. Rep from * 10 more times, and join. (48 sts) Fasten off.
Round 5 (royal blue)
Join royal blue in any st. Ch 3, dc in each of the next 2 sts, then 2 dc in the next st. Dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st. Rep from * 10 more times, and join. (60 sts)
Do not fasten off. Check the 2.75 in (7.0 cm) checkpoint now.
Every round adds exactly 12 stitches (12, 24, 36, 48, 60). This is the standard flat-circle rate for double crochet, which is why the motif lies flat.
Border: Scallop Round
Round 6 forms the 12 scallops that shape the outline.
Border gauge: Each 5-stitch repeat spans about 3/4 in (1.9 cm) of the Round 5 edge. Each shell stands about 3/8 in (1.0 cm) tall.
Round 6 (royal blue)
Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the join, then sc in the next st. Sk 1 st, work a Shell in the next st, then sk 1 st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts, sk 1 st, Shell in the next st, sk 1 st. Rep from * 10 more times. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Count check: 12 repeats × 5 stitches used = 60 stitches, which matches Round 5 exactly.
Stitches made: 12 × (2 sc + 5 dc) = 84 stitches, made up of 24 sc and 60 dc.
Fasten off and leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail for sewing on the cords.
Why the math works: 60 divides evenly by 5, so the scallops close without a partial repeat. Each Shell sits on a single stitch and fans 5 dc outward. This gives the extra width the larger outer edge needs. The 2 sc in each valley anchor the edge to Round 5, so the scallops stay rounded and distinct instead of running together into a ruffle.
Cords
All three cords are royal blue slip-stitch cords.
To make a slip-stitch cord: Chain the stated number. Then sl st into the back bump of each chain back to the start. Fasten off and leave 6 in (15.2 cm) tails at both ends.
- Hanging cord: ch 45, about 8 in (20.3 cm) long
- Tassel cords (make 2): ch 12 each, about 2.25 in (5.7 cm) long
Assembling the Hanging Loop
- Fold the long cord in half.
- Thread both ends together through one wooden bead.
- Slide the bead up until the loop above it measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm).
- Wrap a 12 in (30.5 cm) length of royal blue tightly around both strands, directly above the bead. Make 6–8 neat wraps, covering about 3/8 in (1.0 cm).
- Thread the wrapping tail under the wraps with a tapestry needle and trim it.
- Below the bead, spread the two cord ends slightly apart. Sew them to the back of the motif, between the two scallops at the top center. Stitch through the backs of Rounds 5 and 6 only, so nothing shows on the front.
The bead should sit just at the scallop edge.
Tassels (make 1 turquoise, 1 royal blue)
- Wrap yarn 30 times around the 2.75 in (7.0 cm) card.
- Slide a 10 in (25.4 cm) tie strand under the wraps at the top edge. Tie it tightly with a double knot and leave both ends long.
- Slip the wraps off the card and cut through the loops at the bottom.
- Wrap a matching 12 in (30.5 cm) strand tightly 5–6 times around the tassel, 3/8 in (1.0 cm) below the top, to form the neck. Knot it, then thread the ends down into the skirt.
- Steam the tassel lightly and trim the skirt evenly so it measures 2.5 in (6.4 cm) from top to tips.
Attaching Tassels and Beads
- Thread one wooden bead onto each short cord.
- Use the top tie strands to knot each tassel firmly to the lower end of its cord.
- Slide the bead down so it sits snugly on top of the tassel head.
- Sew the upper end of each cord to the back of the motif at the bottom. Place them about 1 in (2.5 cm) apart, one scallop on either side of the bottom center.
- Adjust the cords so that 1.25 in (3.2 cm) of each shows between the scallop edge and the bead. Hang the turquoise tassel on the left and the royal blue tassel on the right.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all color-change tails behind stitches of their own color. Weaving them into the wrong color shows through on the front.
- Spray the motif lightly with water until it is damp but not soaked.
- Pin it face up on the blocking mat to a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) circle.
- Pin the tip of each scallop so all 12 sit evenly spaced, about 3/4 in (1.9 cm) apart.
- Keep the hanging loop and tassels off the mat. Lay them out straight beside the motif.
- Let everything dry completely, usually 4–6 hours.
- Unpin the motif and give the tassels one more light trim if needed.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Rounds 1–5 count 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 stitches.
- Round 6 has exactly 12 scallops with 2 sc between each pair.
- The motif lies flat and measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm).
- The color rings are concentric, with no jog sitting in the same spot on every round.
- No tails show on the front.
- The hanging loop is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall and the wrap is tight and neat.
- All three beads sit snugly without sliding.
- Both tassels measure 2.5 in (6.4 cm) and hang at the same height.
- Total length is about 11.5 in (29.2 cm).
- The charm hangs straight, without tilting to one side.
Troubleshooting
The center hole won’t close. Pull the magic ring’s tail firmly before Round 2, then weave the tail in a small circle around the ring to lock it.
The motif cups like a bowl. Recount: you may have missed an increase. If the count is correct, go up a hook size.
The scallops are uneven. Make sure every Shell goes into a single stitch and that you skip exactly 1 st on each side of it.
Color-change seams line up in a visible stripe. Join each new color in a different spot, a few stitches away from the previous join.
The charm tilts. Recenter the hanging cord between the top two scallops, and check that both tassel cords are the same length.
The tassels look thin. Use 35 wraps instead of 30.
The beads slide around. Add a small knot in the cord just above each bead.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press the water out in a towel and dry flat. Re-shape the scallops while damp and fluff the tassels once they’re dry.

Final Notes
The measurement chain for this charm:
- Round 1 at 0.75 in (1.9 cm).
- Round 3 at 1.75 in (4.4 cm).
- Round 5 at 2.75 in (7.0 cm), with 60 stitches.
- Round 6 adds 12 even scallops, bringing the motif to 3.5 in (8.9 cm).
- A 3.5 in (8.9 cm) loop at the top.
- Short cords with 1.25 in (3.2 cm) showing at the bottom.
- Two 2.5 in (6.4 cm) tassels, for a total length of about 11.5 in (29.2 cm).
If you check each stage as you go, the finished piece will hang straight and keep its shape.
Happy crocheting!
