Caramel Bloom Heart Garland Crochet Pattern

The Caramel Bloom Heart Garland is a row of seven lace hearts hanging from a slim crocheted cord. Each heart is built from flowers. There is a small 8-petal bloom in each top lobe and a larger 12-petal bloom at the center, all set inside an open chain-mesh frame with a crisp single crochet edge.

The whole garland uses one warm caramel-tan cotton yarn, so the texture carries the design. The look is soft and vintage. It suits fairy lights, pine branches and candlelight, but it also works as a year-round window or mantel decoration.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. Each finished heart is 5 in (12.7 cm) wide and 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall. The cord is 52.2 in (132.6 cm) long, and the seven hearts cover about 41 in (104.1 cm) of it.

Construction is simple. You crochet three flower medallions for each heart and join them as you go on their last round. Two border rounds then turn the cluster into a heart shape. Finally, each heart hangs from the cord on a single chain.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished heart: 5 in (12.7 cm) wide x 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: DK (#3)
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (US E-4)
  • Number of pieces: 7 hearts plus 1 cord. Each heart is made from 3 joined flowers, so there are 21 flowers in total.
  • Layout: 7 hearts in a single row, 6 in (15.2 cm) apart center to center
  • Piece sizes: small flower 2 in (5.1 cm); large flower 2.75 in (7.0 cm)
  • Size before border: 4 in (10.2 cm) wide x 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall
  • Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) on every side
  • Hanging drop: a 1.5 in (3.8 cm) chain plus a 5.5 in (14.0 cm) heart, for 7 in (17.8 cm) in total

Materials

Yarn: Use a smooth DK-weight cotton or cotton blend. Mercerized or lightly twisted cotton shows the petal clusters best and blocks into a crisp outline. Avoid fuzzy yarns, because they fill in the mesh holes.

  • Caramel / camel tan: 75 g, about 175 m (191 yd)

This amount includes a margin of about 30% for your gauge swatch and weaving in ends. Each heart uses about 7 g, and the cord uses about 7 g.

Tools:

  • 3.5 mm (US E-4) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • 7 stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Blocking mat, rust-proof pins and a spray bottle
  • Ruler or tape measure

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sp: space
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • RS: right side

Petal cluster (pc): [Yo, insert hook in the stated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times in the same st, then yo and draw through all 4 loops on the hook.

Beginning petal cluster (beg pc): Ch 2, then work a 2-dc cluster in the same st: [yo, insert hook, pull up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops] twice, then yo and draw through all 3 loops.

Joining sc: Insert the hook in the stated st, yo and pull up a loop. Insert the hook from front to back into the stated tip sc on the neighboring flower, yo and draw through all 3 loops. This counts as 1 sc.

Tip sc: The sc worked into the top of a petal cluster on Round 3 of a flower.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Before you make the full set, crochet one small flower and one large flower and measure them.

  • Stitch gauge: 5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm); 6 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm)
  • Small flower: Rnd 1 = 1 in (2.5 cm); Rnd 2 = 1.75 in (4.4 cm); Rnd 3 = 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • Large flower: Rnd 1 = 1.25 in (3.2 cm); Rnd 2 = 2.5 in (6.4 cm); Rnd 3 = 2.75 in (7.0 cm)
  • Joined cluster: 4 in (10.2 cm) wide x 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall
  • After Border Rnd 1: about 4.75 in (12.1 cm) wide
  • Finished heart: 5 in (12.7 cm) x 5.5 in (14.0 cm)

A difference of up to 0.25 in (0.6 cm) is fine.

  • Flowers too big: go down to a 3.25 mm hook.
  • Flowers too small: go up to a 3.75 mm hook.
  • Flowers cup: your dc are probably too tight, so go up a hook size.
  • Flowers ripple: go down a hook size.

Small Flower (make 2 per heart)

Rnd 1: Ch 4 and sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 15 dc in the ring, then sl st in the top of the beginning ch-3. (16 dc)

Rnd 2: Beg pc in the same st, ch 3, skip the next dc. Pc in the next dc, ch 3, skip the next dc; repeat from * 6 more times. Sl st in the top of the beg pc. (8 pc, 8 ch-3 sps)*

All 16 dc are used: 8 hold petals and 8 are skipped under the ch-3 spaces.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the top of the same pc (tip sc), 4 sc in the next ch-3 sp. Sc in the next pc, 4 sc in the next ch-3 sp; repeat from * 6 more times. Sl st in the first sc. (40 sc)*

This is a conversion round. Rnd 2 has 32 sts (8 pc plus 24 ch). One sc in each of those gives 32 sc, and the extra sc in each of the 8 spaces adds 8 more, for 32 + 8 = 40 sc. You now have 8 tip sc, each followed by a group of 4 sc.

Fasten off the first small flower. On the second small flower, Rnd 3 includes a join (see Joining).

Checkpoint: 2 in (5.1 cm) across. The flower lies flat with an open center hole.

Large Flower (make 1 per heart)

Rnd 1: Ch 6 and sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 23 dc in the ring, then sl st in the top of the beginning ch-3. (24 dc)

Rnd 2: Beg pc in the same st, ch 3, skip the next dc. Pc in the next dc, ch 3, skip the next dc; repeat from * 10 more times. Sl st in the top of the beg pc. (12 pc, 12 ch-3 sps)*

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the top of the same pc (tip sc), 4 sc in the next ch-3 sp. Sc in the next pc, 4 sc in the next ch-3 sp; repeat from * 10 more times. Sl st in the first sc. (60 sc)*

Rnd 2 has 48 sts (12 pc plus 36 ch). One sc in each gives 48 sc, and the extra sc in each of the 12 spaces adds 12 more, for 48 + 12 = 60 sc. This gives you 12 tip sc.

The large flower is always made last for each heart, so its Rnd 3 includes two joins (see Joining).

Checkpoint: 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across.

Garland Cord (make 1)

Row 1: Ch 262. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (261 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. (261 sc)

Tie loops: At the end of Row 2, ch 15 and sl st in the last sc to make a loop 2.5 in (6.4 cm) long. Fasten off. Join yarn in the first sc of Row 2 and make a matching ch-15 loop.

Checkpoint: The cord is 52.2 in (132.6 cm) long and 0.4 in (1.0 cm) tall. Place markers in sc 41, 71, 101, 131, 161, 191 and 221 of Row 2.

Make All Pieces

Per heart: 2 small flowers and 1 large flower, all in Caramel.

Full garland: 14 small flowers, 7 large flowers and 1 cord, all in Caramel.

Joining

Part A: Three Flowers into One Heart

Every join is made on Rnd 3 with a joining sc. Because a joining sc counts as a normal sc, each flower keeps its full count of 40 or 60 sc.

  1. Small A: Work the whole flower and fasten off.
  2. Small C: Work Rnds 1–2. On Rnd 3, work the first 7 tip-and-group repeats as usual. On the 8th tip, work a joining sc into any tip sc of A, then work the last 4-sc group and join. Lay the two flowers RS up with A on the left. The shared tip is now A’s 3 o’clock tip and C’s 9 o’clock tip.
  3. Large B: Work Rnds 1–2. On Rnd 3, work tips 1–9 as usual.
  4. Tip 10: work a joining sc into C’s 7:30 tip, which is the tip just below the A–C join. Then work the next 4-sc group as usual.
  5. Tip 11: work it as usual. This tip faces the small gap between the three flowers.
  6. Tip 12: work a joining sc into A’s 4:30 tip, which is the tip just below the join on A. Work the final 4-sc group and join.

On B, tip 12 is at 11 o’clock, tip 10 is at 1 o’clock and tip 5 is at 6 o’clock. Tip 5 becomes the bottom point of the heart.

Keep the joining sc at the same tension as your other sc. Tight joins tilt the lobes inward, and loose joins leave gaps between the flowers.

Checkpoint: The cluster measures 4 in (10.2 cm) wide x 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall.

Part B: Hearts onto the Cord

Do this only after every heart has its border (see Border) and has been blocked.

  1. With the cord RS facing, join yarn with a sl st in marked sc 41.
  2. Ch 9, which is about 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
  3. Sl st from front to back into the notch ch-1 sp of Heart 1, then fasten off.
  4. Repeat at each marked sc for Hearts 2–7.

The hearts are 6 in (15.2 cm) apart center to center, which is 30 sc at 5 sc per inch. Each heart is 5 in (12.7 cm) wide, so there is a 1 in (2.5 cm) gap between neighboring hearts. There are 40 sc, or 8 in (20.3 cm), of cord beyond each outer marker.

Border

Border gauge: 5 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) along the edge, measured after Rnd 2.

The clock positions below assume the heart is lying RS up with the notch at the top. Work around the heart counterclockwise.

Rnd 1 (mesh): Join yarn with a sc in A’s 1:30 tip.

  • Lobe A: [Ch 5, sc in the next free tip] 5 times. This covers A’s 12, 10:30, 9, 7:30 and 6 o’clock tips.
  • Left valley: Ch 3, sc in B’s 10 o’clock tip.
  • Lower B:
  • Ch 5, sc in the 9 o’clock tip.
  • [Ch 7, sc in the next tip] 3 times, through the 8, 7 and 6 o’clock tips.
  • For the point, ch 3 and work a second sc in the same 6 o’clock tip.
  • [Ch 7, sc in the next tip] 3 times, through the 5, 4 and 3 o’clock tips.
  • Ch 5, sc in the 2 o’clock tip.
  • Right valley: Ch 3, sc in C’s 6 o’clock tip.
  • Lobe C: [Ch 5, sc in the next free tip] 5 times. This covers C’s 4:30, 3, 1:30, 12 and 10:30 tips.
  • Notch: Ch 1, sl st in the first sc.

Count: 22 sc and 112 ch, for 134 sts and 22 loops. The 22 sc are one in each of the 21 free tips plus the second sc at the point.

  • Loops: 12 ch-5 loops (5 on A, 5 on C, 2 on B), 6 ch-7 loops, 2 ch-3 valley loops, 1 ch-3 point loop and 1 ch-1 notch.
  • Chains: 12 x 5 = 60, 6 x 7 = 42, 3 x 3 = 9 and 1 x 1 = 1, so 60 + 42 + 9 + 1 = 112.

The longer ch-7 loops along the lower half of B pull the round flower outline out into the straight sides of a V.

Rnd 2 (edge): Ch 1. Work 1 sc in each sc of Rnd 1, and work into the loops as follows:

  • Ch-5 loop: 4 sc
  • Ch-7 loop: 5 sc
  • Ch-3 valley: 1 sc
  • Ch-3 point: (sc, ch 2, sc)
  • Ch-1 notch: skip it

Sl st in the first sc and fasten off.

Count: 104 sc and a ch-2 point. That is 22 sc worked one per Rnd 1 sc, plus 82 sc worked into the loops.

  • Sc in loops: 12 x 4 = 48, 6 x 5 = 30, 2 x 1 = 2, and 2 at the point, so 48 + 30 + 2 + 2 = 82.

Why the math works: The outer edge of the heart is about 20.8 in (52.8 cm) around. At 5 sc per inch, that needs about 104 sc, which is exactly what this round has. The single sc in each valley and the skipped notch pull the edge in, so the top dip stays sharp. The ch-2 at the point lets the tip turn without bunching. Both sides are equal: there are 52 sc from the notch to the point on each side.

Checkpoint: The heart is 5 in (12.7 cm) wide x 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall, with a border depth of 0.5 in (1.3 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends along the sc rounds.
  2. Soak the hearts in cool water for 10 minutes, then roll them in a towel to press out the water.
  3. Pin each heart RS up to 5 in (12.7 cm) wide x 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall.
  4. Pin the point first, then the notch, then the top of each lobe.
  5. Pin each mesh loop open so the chains form even arches.
  6. Press each flower center flat and open its hole with a fingertip.
  7. Let the hearts dry completely, for at least 12 hours.
  8. Pin the cord straight at 52.2 in (132.6 cm), with a pin every 6 in (15.2 cm).
  9. Attach the hearts to the cord (Joining, Part B).

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every small flower has 8 petals and 40 sc.
  • Every large flower has 12 petals and 60 sc.
  • Each heart has exactly 3 joins, all on tip sc.
  • Border Rnd 1 has 22 loops.
  • Border Rnd 2 has 104 sc plus the ch-2 point.
  • The point of each heart sits directly below the notch, and both sides measure the same.
  • All hearts are within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of each other in size.
  • Every hanger is 9 ch long and sits on sc 41, 71, 101, 131, 161, 191 or 221.
  • No ends show on the RS.

Troubleshooting

  • Flower cups: The Rnd 1 dc are too tight. Redo the flower with a larger hook or looser dc.
  • Flower ruffles: Check that there are exactly 3 ch between petals.
  • Heart is lopsided: One joining sc is on the wrong tip. Each join to B must be on the tip directly below the A–C join.
  • Point is rounded: Check that the point has (sc, ch 3, sc) in Rnd 1 and (sc, ch 2, sc) in Rnd 2, then pin it sharply again.
  • Edge waves: Your sc are loose. Work 3 sc in each ch-5 loop instead of 4. This changes the count but keeps the heart flat.
  • Heart hangs crooked: The hanger is not centered in the notch. Pull it out and sl st it again into the ch-1 notch sp.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out the water and dry flat. If needed, pin the hearts back into shape while they are damp.

Final Notes

The measurements build on each other in this order:

  1. A 2 in (5.1 cm) small flower and a 2.75 in (7.0 cm) large flower
  2. A joined cluster of 4 in (10.2 cm) x 4.5 in (11.4 cm)
  3. A 0.5 in (1.3 cm) border, giving a finished heart of 5 in (12.7 cm) x 5.5 in (14.0 cm)
  4. Seven hearts spaced 6 in (15.2 cm) apart on a 52.2 in (132.6 cm) cord

Check each stage before moving on, and the finished garland will hang evenly.

Happy crocheting!
