Garden Lattice Diamond Strand Curtain Crochet Pattern

The Garden Lattice Curtain is made of long strands of lacy diamonds that let light through. Each diamond is a small square set on point and filled with upward-opening fans and open arches. A crisp single crochet outline frames every diamond, so the strands look neat even from across the room.

This version uses two bright colors, lime green and cobalt blue, in alternating strands. There are nine strands in all, and lime sits at both outer edges. Each strand hangs from a folded tab and ends in a thick tassel that matches its color. The look is fresh, summery and a little bohemian, and it suits a sunny doorway or window.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. When hung with 1 in (2.5 cm) gaps between strands, the finished curtain is about 48.5 in (123.2 cm) wide and 58.5 in (148.6 cm) long, measured from the top of the tab fold to the tassel tips.

Each diamond is worked in rows starting at its bottom point, then outlined with one edging round. The diamonds are joined point to point with short slip-stitch links to make strands. Each strand then gets a top tab and a bottom tassel.

  • Finished size: about 48.5 in (123.2 cm) wide × 58.5 in (148.6 cm) long
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: DK / light worsted (3), cotton
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
  • Number of pieces: 90 diamonds (50 lime, 40 blue), 9 tabs, 9 tassels
  • Layout: 9 strands × 10 diamonds, strands alternating L-B-L-B-L-B-L-B-L

  • Single strand length: 51.75 in (131.4 cm) of diamonds and links, plus the tab and tassel

Materials

Use a smooth mercerized or combed cotton in DK weight, about 115 m per 50 g. Cotton keeps the fans crisp and holds up in sunlight. Avoid fuzzy yarns, because the arches lose their shape.

  • Color L (lime green): 250 g / 575 m. This covers 50 diamonds, 5 tabs, 45 links and 5 tassels.
  • Color B (cobalt blue): 200 g / 460 m. This covers 40 diamonds, 4 tabs, 36 links and 4 tassels.

Tools:
– 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stiff card 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall, for tassels
– Rust-proof pins and a blocking board or foam mats
– Tape measure
– Curtain rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter
– Optional: nine 0.5 in (1.3 cm) wooden beads for rounder tassel heads

These quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge differences and swatching.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp(s) – space(s)
  • tch – turning chain
  • RS / WS – right side / wrong side

Special stitches:
– Fan: 7 dc worked into the same stitch or space.
– Half-fan: 4 dc at a row edge, made as (ch 3, 3 dc) at the start or (3 dc, dc in tch) at the end.
– V-st: (dc, ch 2, dc) in the same stitch or space.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Single crochet gauge: 18 sc and 20 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm). The edging and tabs use this gauge.

Make and edge one test diamond before you start the full set, and check it at each stage:

  • After Row 1: the fan measures about 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across its top.
  • After Row 3: the two fans measure about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across.
  • After Row 5: the widest row is 4 in (10.2 cm) across, and the piece is about 2.3 in (5.8 cm) tall.
  • After Row 9: 4 in (10.2 cm) tip to tip in both directions.
  • After Edging: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip, and each side measures about 3.2 in (8.1 cm).

If your diamond is too big, go down to a 3.25 mm hook. If it is too small, go up to a 3.75 mm hook. A difference of 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per diamond adds up to 2.5 in (6.4 cm) over ten diamonds, so it is worth fixing now.

Diamond Motif (make 90)

Work in turned rows from the bottom point up. Every fan opens toward the top of the diamond.

Ch 4 and sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ring. Turn. (7 dc: one fan, which forms the bottom point)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in the first dc to complete an edge V-st. Ch 3, sk 2 dc, sc in the next (4th) dc. Ch 3, sk 2 dc, then work a V-st in the top of the beginning ch-3. Turn.
(4 dc, 1 sc, 2 ch-2 sps, 2 ch-3 sps)

Row 3 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in the first ch-2 sp (Fan B). Ch 3, sc in sc, ch 3. Work 6 dc in the last ch-2 sp, then dc in the 3rd ch of tch (Fan C). Turn.
(14 dc, 1 sc, 2 ch-3 sps)

Row 4 (WS): Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in the first dc. Ch 3, sk 2 dc, sc in the next dc (center of Fan C). Ch 3, V-st in the next sc. Ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in the next dc (center of Fan B). Ch 3, V-st in the 3rd ch of tch. Turn.
(6 dc, 2 sc, 3 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-3 sps)

Row 5 (RS, widest row): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc in the first ch-2 sp (half-fan). Ch 3, sc in the next sc, ch 3, then work 7 dc in the center ch-2 sp (Fan D). Ch 3, sc in the next sc, ch 3. Work 3 dc in the last ch-2 sp, then dc in the 3rd ch of tch (half-fan). Turn.
(15 dc, 2 sc, 4 ch-3 sps)

The two ends of Row 5 become the side corners of the diamond.

Row 6 (WS): Ch 1, sc in the first dc. Ch 3, V-st in the next sc. Ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in the next dc (center of Fan D). Ch 3, V-st in the next sc. Ch 3, sc in the top of tch. Turn.
(4 dc, 3 sc, 2 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-3 sps)

Row 7 (RS): Sl st in the first sc and into the first ch-3 sp. Ch 1, sc in the same sp. Work 7 dc in the next ch-2 sp (Fan E), then sc in the next ch-3 sp. Ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp. Work 7 dc in the next ch-2 sp (Fan F), then sc in the last ch-3 sp. Turn, leaving the last sc unworked.
(14 dc, 4 sc, 1 ch-3 sp)

Row 8 (WS): Sl st in the first sc and in the next 3 dc. Ch 1, sc in the next dc (center of Fan F). Ch 3, V-st in the ch-3 sp. Ch 3, sc in the 4th dc of Fan E. Turn, leaving the rest unworked.

Row 9 (RS): Ch 1, sc in the first sc. Work 7 dc in the ch-2 sp (Fan G, the top fan), then sc in the last sc. Fasten off.
(7 dc, 2 sc)

The body now measures 4 in (10.2 cm) tip to tip. The sl sts at the start of Rows 7 and 8 create the narrowing upper slopes.

Make All Pieces

Make 50 diamonds in Color L and 40 in Color B. Edge each diamond as soon as you finish it, using the Edging Round in the Border section below.

Layout (columns are strands from left to right, rows are diamonds from top to bottom):

Strand: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Row 1: L B L B L B L B L
Row 2: L B L B L B L B L
... (same for all 10 rows)
Row 10: L B L B L B L B L

That gives 5 lime strands × 10 = 50 L diamonds, and 4 blue strands × 10 = 40 B diamonds.

Joining

Each strand is joined point to point with a short doubled link. Every link joins one corner ch-2 sp to another corner ch-2 sp, so the diamonds hang centered and straight.

Link (make 9 per strand):
1. With the strand’s color, join yarn in the top corner ch-2 sp of the lower diamond.
2. Ch 4, then sl st in the bottom corner ch-2 sp of the diamond above.
3. Sl st in each of the 4 ch back down, then sl st in the starting ch-2 sp. Fasten off.

The finished link is 0.75 in (1.9 cm) long.

Tension: Work the return sl sts loosely, about as loose as the chains. Tight sl sts shorten and twist the link, and the strand will start to spiral.

Checkpoint: Lay a finished strand flat without stretching it. It should measure 10 × 4.5 in + 9 × 0.75 in = 51.75 in (131.4 cm). A difference of up to 1 in (2.5 cm) is fine. If a strand is longer than that, re-check that its diamonds are the right size before you add the tab.

Border: Diamond Edging, Top Tabs and Tassels

There is no border around the whole curtain. Instead, each diamond gets its own edging round, which forms the outline you see in the photo. Each strand is then finished with a tab at the top and a tassel at the bottom. All of these use the 18 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gauge.

Edging Round (every diamond, before joining)

With RS facing, join the same color in the ring at the bottom point.

Edging Round: Ch 1, then work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the ring for the bottom corner.

  • Lower-right side: 3 sc in the end of each of Rows 1, 2, 3 and 4. (12 sc)
  • Side corner: (sc, ch 2, sc) in the end of Row 5.
  • Upper-right side: 2 sc in the end of Row 6, 3 sc in the end of Row 7, 3 sc in the end of Row 8 (working over the sl sts), 1 sc in the end sc of Row 9, and 1 sc in each of the first 3 dc of Fan G. (12 sc)
  • Top corner: (sc, ch 2, sc) in the 4th dc of Fan G.
  • Upper-left side: work the upper-right side in mirror image. (12 sc)
  • Side corner: (sc, ch 2, sc) in the end of Row 5.
  • Lower-left side: work the lower-right side in mirror image. (12 sc)

Sl st to the first sc and fasten off.

Count: each side has 12 sc plus its 2 corner sc, for 14 sc per side. Each corner’s 2 sc are split between the two sides that meet there, so the round totals 4 × 14 = 56 sc and 4 corner ch-2 sps.

Why the math works: 14 sc at 4.5 sc per inch measures about 3.1 in (7.9 cm). A finished side is about 3.2 in (8.1 cm), so the outline is very slightly eased. That keeps the lace flat with no ruffling. The two ch-2 sps at each corner make the points sharp and also give the links a clean place to attach.

Top Tab (9)

Join the strand’s color in the top corner ch-2 sp of the top diamond.

Row 1: Ch 1, 4 sc in the ch-2 sp. Turn. (4 sc)
Rows 2–20: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn. (4 sc per row)

The tab is 0.9 in (2.3 cm) wide and 4 in (10.2 cm) long. Fold it to the back and whipstitch Row 20 to the back of Row 1.

The loop is about 4 in (10.2 cm) around, which fits a rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter (about 3.1 in around). The fold sits about 1.75 in (4.4 cm) above the top point.

Tassel (9)

  1. Wrap yarn 40 times around the 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card.
  2. Thread a 10 in (25.4 cm) strand under the wraps at the top and tie it tightly. If you want a rounder head, tie the wraps over a bead.
  3. Cut the loops at the bottom.
  4. Wrap the neck 8 times, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top, and knot the ends.
  5. Bury the ends inside the tassel.
  6. Trim the tassel to 5 in (12.7 cm).

Use the tie ends to knot the tassel firmly through the bottom corner ch-2 sp of the last diamond, so the head sits right at the point.

Length check: 1.75 in tab + 51.75 in strand + 5 in tassel = 58.5 in (148.6 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Soak the strands, two or three at a time, in cool water for 10 minutes.
  2. Press the water out gently in a towel. Do not wring.
  3. Pin each diamond to 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tip to tip, with a pin in each corner ch-2 sp.
  4. Open each fan by pinning gently at its center top, and pull the arches into even curves.
  5. Pin the links straight at 0.75 in (1.9 cm) each.
  6. Comb the tassels straight and let them dry hanging, or lay them flat.
  7. Let everything dry completely before you unpin it.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • 50 lime and 40 blue diamonds, each 4.5 in (11.4 cm)
  • Every edging round has 56 sc and 4 ch-2 corners
  • All fans open upward in every diamond
  • 9 links per strand, each 0.75 in (1.9 cm), with no twists
  • Each strand measures 51.75 in (131.4 cm) without the tab or tassel
  • Tabs are 20 rows long and sewn securely
  • Tassels are 5 in (12.7 cm) long and tied tight at the bottom points
  • Colors alternate L-B-L-B-L-B-L-B-L across the rod
  • All ends are woven in on the WS

Troubleshooting

  • The diamond leans to one side: Your turning chains are too tight or too loose. Count the chains in each Row 2, 4 and 6 V-st and keep them even.
  • The fans curl or cup: Your dc are too short. Try loosening your yarn-overs or going up half a hook size.
  • The edging ruffles: Check that you have 12 sc per side, not 14 between the corners.
  • The edging pulls the points round: Make sure each corner has a ch-2 sp, not just a single sc.
  • The strand spirals: Re-do any tight links with looser return sl sts, then wet-block the strand while it hangs.
  • One strand is longer than the rest: Block it to match the others, or swap in a re-made diamond.
  • The tassel head is loose: Add 4 more neck wraps and pull them firmly.

Care

Hand-wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then press dry in a towel and block flat. Hang it out of harsh direct sun if you want the bright colors to last longer.

Final Notes

Every measurement builds on the one before it. Your stitch gauge controls the 4 in (10.2 cm) body, and the edging brings each diamond to 4.5 in (11.4 cm). Ten diamonds and nine 0.75 in (1.9 cm) links make a 51.75 in (131.4 cm) strand. Adding the 1.75 in (4.4 cm) tab and the 5 in (12.7 cm) tassel gives 58.5 in (148.6 cm) overall.

Nine strands spaced 1 in (2.5 cm) apart span 48.5 in (123.2 cm). To make the curtain longer, add one diamond and one link per strand. Each pair adds 5.25 in (13.3 cm).

Happy crocheting!
