Navy Paisley Bead Curtain Crochet Pattern

This beaded curtain hangs nine strands of lacy navy motifs from a scalloped header. Pearl beads separate the motifs and a full tassel finishes each strand. In a sunny window the open spaces between the motifs glow, and the solid shapes stand out sharply against the light.

The design uses one thread color, deep navy, with ivory pearls as the accent. It mixes three motifs: a curled paisley, a spoked mandala and a small pointed oval. They are arranged in two alternating strand types, so the curtain looks busy but still orderly. The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.

The finished curtain measures 31.5 in (80.0 cm) wide and 24.95 in (63.4 cm) long, measured from the top edge of the header to the tassel tips. The tab loops are not included in that length.

Construction overview: You crochet each motif separately and make the tassels. Then you link each strand from top to bottom with short beaded chain connectors. Last, you crochet the header, add its rod tabs, and hang each strand from a loop under a scallop point.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 31.5 in x 24.95 in (80.0 cm x 63.4 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: Size 3 mercerized cotton crochet thread (Super Fine, category 1)
  • Hook: 2.5 mm (B/1.5)
  • Number of pieces: 54 crocheted motif and tassel pieces plus 1 header
  • Layout: 9 strands, alternating B-A-B-A-B-A-B-A-B
  • Strand size: 19.2 in (48.8 cm) from the header loop to the tassel top, plus a 4 in (10.2 cm) tassel
  • Width before header: 9 strands spaced 3.5 in (8.9 cm) apart, center to center
  • Header depth: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) between the scallops and 1.75 in (4.4 cm) at the scallop points

Materials

Choose a tightly twisted mercerized cotton. It holds crisp picots and does not stretch much under the weight of the beads. Avoid acrylic, because strands made with it slowly lengthen.

  • Navy size 3 cotton thread: 260 g (728 m)
  • Ivory pearl beads, 10 mm (0.4 in / 1.0 cm), with 2 mm holes: 90 beads. The pattern uses 84, so 6 are spares.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle and a dental-floss threader (for stringing the beads)
  • Cardboard rectangle 4 in (10.2 cm) tall (for the tassels)
  • Rust-proof pins, a blocking board, a spray bottle
  • Wooden rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter

All quantities include roughly a 15% margin for swatching and weaving in ends.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • sp(s): space(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • RS: right side

Special stitch:

  • Picot loop: In this pattern, any ch-3 loop on a motif’s outer edge. The connectors attach to these loops.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 8 sc x 8 rows = 1 in (2.5 cm). Measure this over a 16-stitch, 16-row swatch, which should be 2 in (5.1 cm) square.

Make one paisley, one mandala and one oval before anything else. Check each one against the measurements below.

  • Paisley: Rnd 1 is 2.0 x 0.75 in (5.1 x 1.9 cm). Rnd 2 is 2.5 x 1.0 in (6.4 x 2.5 cm). Rnd 3 is 3.0 x 1.5 in (7.6 x 3.8 cm). Rnd 4 is 3.5 x 2.0 in (8.9 x 5.1 cm), measured loop to loop without the curl.
  • Mandala: Rnd 1 is 0.9 in (2.3 cm). Rnd 2 is 1.4 in (3.6 cm). Rnd 3 is 1.75 in (4.4 cm). Rnd 4 is 2.0 in (5.1 cm).
  • Oval: Rnd 1 is 1.25 x 0.5 in (3.2 x 1.3 cm). Rnd 2 is 1.5 x 0.75 in (3.8 x 1.9 cm).
  • Connectors: a single-pearl connector is 1.2 in (3.0 cm) and a double-pearl connector is 1.7 in (4.3 cm).

If your pieces come out too big, go down to a 2.25 mm hook. If they are too small, go up to a 2.75 mm hook. The strand math only works when the motifs and connectors match these lengths.

Motif 1: Paisley (make 8)

The paisley starts as a teardrop worked around both sides of a foundation chain.

Ch 12.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 6 ch, 7 dc in last ch. Now work along the other side of the chain: dc in next 6 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (27 sts)

The narrow sc end is the tip and the 7-dc fan makes the round bottom.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st and in the next 9 sts, 2 sc in each of the next 7 sts, sc in the last 10 sts. Join. (34 sc)

Rnd 3 (open ring): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Then work dc in next st, ch 1 33 times. Join to the 3rd ch of the beginning ch-4. (34 dc, 34 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 4 (loop edge): Sl st into the first ch-1 sp. Ch 1, then work sc in ch-1 sp, ch 3 in all 34 sps. Join to the first sc.

Count: 34 sc (1 per ch-1 sp) + 34 ch-3 loops.

Loop 34 sits at the tip and loop 17 sits at the bottom center.

Curl: Ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, then work 2 sc in each of the next 8 ch, which gives 17 sc. Sl st in the first sc of Rnd 4. The increases twist the chain into a tight coil beside the tip. Fasten off.

Motif 2: Mandala (make 19)

Ch 6 and join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in the ring. Join. (16 dc)

Rnd 2 (spokes): Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2). Then work dc in next dc, ch 2 15 times. Join to the 3rd ch. (16 dc, 16 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 3: Sl st into the first ch-2 sp. Ch 1, then work sc in ch-2 sp, ch 4 16 times. Join. (16 sc, 16 ch-4 loops)

Rnd 4: Sl st into the first loop. Work (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in each ch-4 loop around. Join and fasten off.

Count: 64 sc + 16 picot loops.

Picot loops 1 and 9 are directly opposite each other. Use them as the top and bottom of the mandala.

Motif 3: Oval (make 18)

Ch 8.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the other side: hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, 2 sc in the first ch. Join. (16 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, then work sc in next 2 sts, ch 3 8 times. Join and fasten off.

Count: 16 sc + 8 picot loops.

The loop after st 8 and the loop after st 16 sit at the two points.

Tassels (make 9)

Wrap thread 60 times around the 4 in (10.2 cm) card. Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) strand under the top and tie it tightly. Leave a 1 in (2.5 cm) loop for hanging. Cut the bottom loops.

Wrap a second strand tightly 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top to form the head, then trim the tassel to 4 in (10.2 cm).

Joining

Each connector is its own short length of thread. Cut 12 in (30.5 cm) of thread and use the floss threader to string the pearls onto it first.

  • Single-pearl connector (A strands): Sc in the bottom loop of the upper piece, ch 3, slide 1 pearl up, ch 3, sc in the top loop of the lower piece. Fasten off. It measures 1.2 in (3.0 cm).
  • Double-pearl connector (B strands): Work ch 3, pearl, ch 1, pearl, ch 3. It measures 1.7 in (4.3 cm).

Use the right loops on each piece:

  • Paisley: top = loop 34 (at the tip), bottom = loop 17.
  • Mandala: top = picot 1, bottom = picot 9.
  • Oval: use the two point loops.
  • Tassel: sc around its hanging loop.

Join motifs 1 through 5 and the tassel with 5 connectors per strand. The 6th connector comes later and links the strand to the header.

Tension: Keep each chain just snug enough that the pearl can’t slide past it. Loose chains add length very quickly.

Size checkpoint (with the header connector included):

  • Strand A = 6 x 1.2 + 3.5 + 1.5 + 2.0 + 1.5 + 3.5 = 19.2 in (48.8 cm)
  • Strand B = 6 x 1.7 + 2.0 + 1.5 + 2.0 + 1.5 + 2.0 = 19.2 in (48.8 cm)

Because of the double pearls, both strand types come out exactly the same length.

Border (Header)

The header is the curtain’s border. It is worked in rows from a top foundation chain, and its gauge is the main gauge: 8 sts = 1 in (2.5 cm).

Each strand gets a 28-st repeat. 9 strands x 28 sts = 252 sts, and 252 ÷ 8 = 31.5 in (80.0 cm). Each repeat is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) wide, which matches the strand spacing exactly. No stitches are added at the edges.

Ch 253.

  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (252 sc) Turn.
  • Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st across. (252 dc) Turn.
  • Row 3 (eyelets): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 10 sts, ch 6, skip 6 sts, dc in next 11 sts. Then work dc in next 11 sts, ch 6, skip 6 sts, dc in next 11 sts 8 times. (198 dc, 9 ch-6 sps) Turn.
  • Row 4: Ch 1, then work sc in next 11 sts, 6 sc in ch-6 sp, sc in next 11 sts 9 times. Count: 198 sc (1 per dc) + 54 sc (6 in each sp) = 252 sc. Turn.
  • Row 5: Repeat Row 2. (252 dc) Turn.
  • Row 6 (scallops): Ch 1, then work sc in next 3, hdc in next 3, dc in next 3, tr in next 10, dc in next 3, hdc in next 3, sc in next 3 9 times. (252 sts) Turn.

The tallest stitches hang lowest, so each repeat forms a pointed scallop.

  • Row 7: Ch 1, then work sc in next 14 sts, ch 3, sc in next 14 sts 9 times. Fasten off.

Count: 252 sc + 9 ch-3 hanging loops.

Why the math works: each eyelet (11 + 6 + 11), each scallop point and each hanging loop falls exactly between sts 14 and 15 of its repeat. That makes all of them line up vertically over the strand. The first and last strands sit 1.75 in (4.4 cm) from the side edges, which is half of one repeat.

Tabs: Work along the other side of the foundation chain. In sts 11–18 of each repeat, join the thread and work 8 sc. Then work 31 more rows of 8 sc, for 32 rows and 4 in (10.2 cm) in total. Fold each tab to the wrong side and sew it to Row 2. You will have 9 tabs, each 1 in (2.5 cm) wide.

Attach strands: Work a 6th connector (single or double pearl, to match the strand type) from each header ch-3 loop to the top of that strand’s first motif.

Final Blocking

  1. Spray each motif until it is damp. Don’t soak it.
  2. Pin each paisley to 3.5 x 2.0 in (8.9 x 5.1 cm), each mandala to a 2.0 in (5.1 cm) circle, and each oval to 1.5 x 0.75 in (3.8 x 1.9 cm). Open every loop with a pin.
  3. Pin the header flat at 31.5 in (80.0 cm) wide. Pin each scallop point down.
  4. Lay the strands out straight, 3.5 in (8.9 cm) apart, and check that each one is 19.2 in (48.8 cm).
  5. Let everything dry completely. Steam the tassels lightly, then comb and re-trim them to 4 in (10.2 cm).

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • [ ] 8 paisleys, 19 mandalas, 18 ovals and 9 tassels are made, and the curls coil tightly.
  • [ ] 84 pearls are used: 6 per A strand and 12 per B strand.
  • [ ] The header has 252 sts, 9 eyelets, 9 scallops, 9 loops and 9 tabs.
  • [ ] Every strand is 19.2 in (48.8 cm) and every tassel tip lines up.
  • [ ] The curtain is 31.5 x 24.95 in (80.0 x 63.4 cm).
  • [ ] All ends are woven in at least 1 in (2.5 cm).

Troubleshooting

  • Paisley ruffles: Your Rnd 3 chains are too loose. Use a smaller hook for Rnds 3–4 only.
  • Curl lies flat: Make sure every chain after the first gets 2 sc.
  • Strands hang at different lengths: Re-tension the connectors. A connector more than 0.25 in (0.6 cm) off should be redone.
  • Header is too wide: Check your gauge. Every 8 extra stitches’ worth of width adds 1 in (2.5 cm) to the header.
  • Pearl won’t pass onto the thread: Use the floss threader, or choose beads with larger holes.
  • Motifs twist: Steam-block them again and let the weight of the tassels straighten them.

Care

Hand wash in cool water, roll in a towel, and dry the curtain flat, pinned to its blocking measurements. Do not tumble dry, because heat can dull the pearl coating.

Navy crochet curtain with lace patterns, cream beads, and tassels hangs over a window in a neutral, light-filled living room.

Final Notes

The measurements build on each other: 8 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm), which sets the size of each motif. Each motif and connector adds up to a 19.2 in (48.8 cm) strand. 28-stitch repeats give 3.5 in (8.9 cm) spacing, and 9 repeats give 252 stitches and a 31.5 in (80.0 cm) header. Add the 1.75 in (4.4 cm) header and the 4 in (10.2 cm) tassels, and you get a 24.95 in (63.4 cm) curtain. If you check each link along the way, the strands will hang evenly. Happy crocheting!
