This curtain is made of quiet, glowing lace. Cream angels and tan bells alternate down nine beaded cords, and each cord ends in a soft tassel. When light comes through a winter window, the open skirts and wings almost shine.
The palette is simple: cream cotton for the angels, warm tan for the bells, and natural wooden beads that tie the two together. The style is calm, neutral, and textured, somewhere between Scandinavian Christmas and boho macramé.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each angel measures 3.6 in wide × 3.7 in tall (9.1 × 9.4 cm) including the bead head. Each bell is 1.75 in (4.4 cm) tall. The finished curtain is about 35.6 in wide × 65 in long (90.4 × 165.1 cm).
The angel is worked flat in one piece from the neck down, and the wings are added at the shoulders. Bells are worked in a spiral from the top down. All the pieces are threaded onto cotton cord with knots and beads, and tassels finish each strand.

Materials
Use a smooth mercerized cotton of about 170 m per 50 g. It gives crisp stitch definition and takes starch well. Avoid fuzzy or acrylic yarns, because the lace won’t hold its shape.
- Cream (angels, 5 tassels): 200 g / 680 m
- Tan (bells, 4 tassels): 150 g / 510 m
- Cord: 1.5 mm natural cotton macramé cord, 30 m
- Wooden beads (3–4 mm holes): 72 × 20 mm, 153 × 12 mm, 144 × 10 mm
Tools:
- 2.25 mm (US B-1) hook
- Tapestry needle and a big-eye beading needle
- Locking stitch markers
- Scissors and tape measure
- Stiff card 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall, for tassels
- Spray starch, blocking mat, rustproof pins
- Curtain rod or tension rod
All yarn quantities include a margin of about 20% for your test pieces and differences in tension.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- BLO – back loop only
- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- t-ch – turning chain
Special stitch – chain arch: ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc. Each arch uses 3 stitches of the row below.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- Angel gauge: 28 dc and 14 dc rows = 4 in (10.2 cm), which is 7 dc and 3.5 rows per 1 in (2.5 cm).
- Bell gauge: 8 sc and 8 rounds = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Make one complete angel and one bell before anything else, and use them as your gauge test.
Angel checkpoints:
- After Row 1: 0.7 in (1.8 cm) wide
- After Row 5: 1.9 in (4.8 cm) wide
- After Row 8: 3.6 in (9.1 cm) wide, 2.3 in (5.8 cm) tall
- After the border: 2.7 in (6.9 cm) from neck to arch tips
Bell checkpoints:
- After Rnd 3: disk 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across
- After Rnd 9: tube 0.7 in (1.8 cm) wide, 1.1 in (2.8 cm) tall
- Finished: 1.75 in (4.4 cm) tall
If your pieces come out too big, go down 0.25 mm in hook size. If they come out too small, go up 0.25 mm. Change the hook, not the stitch counts, because the border math depends on the counts.

Angel
Body
Ch 7.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 3 ch. (5 dc; the t-ch counts as a dc)
Row 2: Ch 3, turn. Dc in first st, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in top of t-ch. (7 dc)
Row 3: Ch 3, turn. Dc in first st, dc in each dc to the t-ch, 2 dc in top of t-ch. (9 dc)
Row 4: Repeat Row 3. (11 dc)
Row 5: Repeat Row 3. (13 dc)
Rows 1–5 form the solid bodice, which widens by 2 sts per row.
Row 6: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), turn. [Dc in next dc, ch 1] 11 times, dc in top of t-ch. (13 dc, 12 ch-1 sps)
Row 7: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), turn. [Dc in next dc, ch 2] 11 times, dc in 3rd ch of t-ch. (13 dc, 12 ch-2 sps)
Rows 6 and 7 form the open ladder mesh.
Row 8: Ch 3, turn. [Dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc] 12 times, working the last dc in the 3rd ch of the t-ch. (1 + 24 = 25 dc)
Row 8 is the solid band. Don’t fasten off. Go straight on to the skirt border (see Border).
Wings (make 2)
With the right side facing, join cream around the post of the end stitch of Row 2.
W-Row 1: Ch 3, 6 dc around the same post. (7 dc)
W-Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), turn. [Dc in next dc, ch 2] 5 times, dc in top of t-ch. (7 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)
W-Row 3: Ch 3, turn. [3 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc] 6 times, working the last dc in the 3rd ch of the t-ch. (1 + 24 = 25 dc)
The wing is now a fan with a radius of 0.9 in (2.3 cm). Work the wing border, then make the second wing on the opposite end of Row 2.
Halo
Ch 14, then sl st to the first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 18 sc into the ring, sl st to first sc. (18 sc)
Fasten off. The halo is 0.7 in (1.8 cm) across, so it sits on top of the 20 mm head bead without slipping over it.
Bell
Work in a continuous spiral, moving a marker up each round.
Rnd 1: Magic ring, 6 sc. Pull the ring closed but leave a hole about 3 mm wide for the cord. (6)
Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times. (18)
Rnds 4–9: In BLO, sc in each st. (18 per round, 6 rounds)
Rnd 10: In BLO, [sc 2, inc] 6 times. (24)
Rnd 11: In BLO, sc in each st. (24)
Rnd 12: In BLO, [sc 3, inc] 6 times. (30)
Rnd 13: In BLO, [sc 4, inc] 6 times. (36)
Rnd 14: Sl st in each st. (36 sl st)
Fasten off. Working in the back loop leaves horizontal ridges on the outside, and Rnd 14 makes a firm rim 1.4 in (3.6 cm) across.
Make All Pieces
- Cream: 72 angels with borders, 72 halos, 5 tassels
- Tan: 72 bells, 4 tassels
Each strand holds 8 angels and 8 bells. The odd strands (A, C, E, G, I) start with an angel and get cream tassels. The even strands (B, D, F, H) start with a bell and get tan tassels.
The layout runs top to bottom, with strands A–I from left to right:
POS 1: ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL
POS 2: BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL
POS 3: ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL
POS 4: BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL ANGEL BELL
...repeat POS 1–2 through POS 16...
TASSEL: CREAM TAN CREAM TAN CREAM TAN CREAM TAN CREAM
The positions show the order on each cord, not exact heights. Angel units are taller than bell units, so neighboring strands look staggered.
Tassels
Wrap yarn 40 times around the 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card. Tie the top loops with a 12 in (30.5 cm) strand, then cut the bottom loops. Wrap another strand tightly around the bundle 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top, and trim the tassel to 5 in (12.7 cm).
Joining
The pieces are joined by stringing them on cord. Cut nine lengths of cord, each 120 in (304.8 cm). Fold the top 6 in (15.2 cm) of each one into a rod loop and tie it. Measure 4 in (10.2 cm) down from the rod and tie an overhand knot.
Angel unit: Thread a 10 mm bead, the halo, and a 20 mm head bead. Pass the cord into the center of the Row 1 foundation and weave it down the wrong side, under the back loops of each row’s center stitch. In Rows 1–5 the center stitches are dc 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. In Rows 6–7 it is dc 7, and in Row 8 it is dc 13. Bring the cord out at the 5th border sc, which is the center sc. Add a 12 mm bead and tie a knot. The finished unit is 4.6 in (11.7 cm) long.
Bell unit: Tie a knot and add a 12 mm support bead. Thread the bell from the top down so the bead sits inside its crown. Leave 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of cord, then add a 10 mm bead and tie a knot. The finished unit is 2.4 in (6.1 cm) long.
One angel unit plus one bell unit makes a 7 in (17.8 cm) repeat. Eight repeats per strand come to 56 in (142.2 cm).
Keep the knots snug, but don’t pull the woven cord tight. If an angel puckers, loosen the weave until it lies flat.
Size checkpoint: measure each strand from the rod to the bottom of the 16th unit. It should be 60 in (152.4 cm). Then add the final 12 mm bead, tie on the tassel, and hide the cord ends inside the tassel.
Hang the strands 4 in (10.2 cm) apart, center to center. That gives 8 gaps × 4 in = 32 in (81.3 cm). Add 3.6 in (9.1 cm) for the two outer angel halves, and the total width is 35.6 in (90.4 cm).
Border
Work this border on every angel before you string it.
Border gauge: each chain arch covers 3 dc, which is 0.43 in (1.1 cm), and hangs 0.4 in (1.0 cm) deep.
Skirt border (after Row 8): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, [ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc] 8 times. (9 sc, 8 ch-5 arches) Fasten off.
Wing border (after W-Row 3, each wing): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, [ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc] 8 times. (9 sc, 8 ch-5 loops) Fasten off.
Why the math works: each arch uses 3 sts, plus 1 starting sc. That means the row must have 3n + 1 stitches. Both edges have 25 dc, and 25 = 3 × 8 + 1, so you get exactly 8 arches with an sc in the first and last dc. On the skirt, the sc fall on dc 1, 4, 7, 10, and 13, so the 5th sc sits on center stitch 13. That leaves four arches on each side of the cord exit, and the angel stays symmetrical.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends.
- Spray each angel lightly with starch.
- Pin the angel face up with the skirt at 3.6 in (9.1 cm) wide and 2.7 in (6.9 cm) tall. Pin every arch tip.
- Open each wing into a fan 1.25 in (3.2 cm) deep and pin all 8 loops.
- Starch each bell and slip it over a plastic-wrapped paper cone, with the rim at 1.4 in (3.6 cm) across.
- Let everything dry completely, about 12 hours.
- Steam the tassels and comb them straight.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Row 8 and each W-Row 3 have 25 dc.
- Each angel has 8 hem arches and 8 loops per wing.
- The cord exits at the center hem sc.
- Each bell has 36 sts at the rim and even ridges.
- Each strand has 8 angels and 8 bells and starts with the correct piece.
- Each strand measures 60 in (152.4 cm) to the 16th unit and 65 in (165.1 cm) to the tassel tip.
- Tassel colors alternate cream and tan.
- All knots are tight and all ends are hidden.
Troubleshooting
- Skirt curls: Your tension is too tight. Go up 0.25 mm and block firmly.
- Arches don’t fit evenly: Recount Row 8. It must have 25 dc.
- Wings droop: Use a stronger starch and let them dry pinned flat.
- Bell flares too early: Rnds 4–9 must have exactly 18 sts each.
- Head bead wobbles: Thread the halo before the bead and snug the knot below.
- Strands twist: Let the curtain hang for 24 hours, or add a heavier bead above the tassel.
Care
Dust the curtain with a hair dryer on the cool setting. If a strand gets soiled, hand-wash it in cool water, starch it again, and dry it flat.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other. At 7 dc per 1 in (2.5 cm), Row 8’s 25 dc measure 3.6 in (9.1 cm) and fit 8 arches exactly. An angel unit is 4.6 in (11.7 cm) and a bell unit is 2.4 in (6.1 cm), so each repeat is 7 in (17.8 cm). Eight repeats make 56 in (142.2 cm). With the 4 in (10.2 cm) header and the 5 in (12.7 cm) tassel, each strand is 65 in (165.1 cm). Nine strands spaced 4 in (10.2 cm) apart make a curtain 35.6 in (90.4 cm) wide.
If your first angel and bell match gauge, the rest of the curtain will come out to size.
