This coverlet is built from rows of ribbed half-circle fans, each opening out from a small eyelet. Around the fans, graduated stitch frames and little curled scrolls make an open lattice that looks like scrolling ironwork on the bed.
It uses a single deep plum, so the texture does the work: raised fan ribs, neat chain frames, and a scalloped picot border. The look is romantic and vintage, but the construction is fully modular.
All instructions use US terms. The finished coverlet measures 75 x 75 in (190.5 x 190.5 cm), including a 1.5 in (3.8 cm) border.
You’ll make 216 identical rectangular motifs. Each one is a fan worked in rows, then 3 rounds square it off to 6 x 4 in (15.2 x 10.2 cm), with scrolls in the 2 top corners. The motifs are joined stitch to stitch into a 12 x 18 grid, then finished with a 4-round scalloped border.

Scroll: Ch 8, sl st in the 5th ch from hook to form a ring, work 9 sc in the ring, then sl st in each of the remaining 3 ch. This makes a curled ring about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) across.
Scroll Corner: In the same st, work dtr, Scroll, ch 3, dtr. The ch-3 is the corner space.
Picot: Ch 3, sl st in the 3rd ch from hook.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Make and block 1 motif before you start production. Gauge on the final round is 18 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), or 4.5 sts per inch.
Checkpoints:
- After Fan Row 5: the flat edge is 4.75 in (12.1 cm) and the fan is 2.4 in (6.1 cm) tall.
- After Round 1: about 5 x 2.6 in (12.7 x 6.6 cm).
- After Round 3, blocked: 6 x 4 in (15.2 x 10.2 cm).
If your motif is too big, use a 3.75 mm hook. If it’s too small, use a 4.5 mm hook. An error of just 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per motif adds up to 3 in (7.6 cm) across the width and 4.5 in (11.4 cm) down the length.

Motif (Make 216)
Fan (rows)
Row 1 (RS): Ch 4. Work 6 dc in the 4th ch from hook; the skipped ch counts as a dc. (7 sts) This leaves the base eyelet. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc throughout). Dc BLO in the first st, then 2 dc BLO in each st across, ending in the top of the ch-3. (14 sts) Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc BLO in the next st, *dc BLO in the next st, 2 dc BLO in the next st; repeat from * 6 more times. (21 sts) Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc BLO in the next st, 2 dc BLO in the next st, *dc BLO in the next 2 sts, 2 dc BLO in the next st; repeat from * 6 more times. (28 sts) Turn.
Row 5 (RS): Ch 3, dc BLO in the next 2 sts, 2 dc BLO in the next st, *dc BLO in the next 3 sts, 2 dc BLO in the next st; repeat from * 6 more times. (35 sts) Do not turn.
Working in the BLO makes ridges, while the stacked stitch columns radiate from the eyelet as ribs. The row ends form the flat edge.
Round 1
To keep track of positions, the flat-edge sts are labeled B1–B21 from left to right, and the arc sts are labeled A1–A35 from right to left.
Ch 1 and rotate to the flat edge. Work 2 sc in the end of each of Rows 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 (B1–B10). Work 1 sc in the base ch (B11). Work 2 sc in the end of each of Rows 1 through 5 (B12–B21). Then sc in each of the 35 Row 5 sts (A1–A35). Join with a sl st.
Count: 56 sc (21 + 35).
Round 2
- Bottom: Ch 1, 2 sc in B1, sc in B2–B20, 2 sc in B21. (23 sc)
- Bottom-right corner: Ch 2.
- Right side: Sc in A1, ch 2, sk A2, hdc in A3, ch 2, sk A4, dc in A5, ch 2, sk A6, tr in A7, ch 3, sk A8.
- Top-right corner: Scroll Corner in A9.
- Top: Ch 3, sk A10–A11, tr in A12, ch 3, sk A13–A14, dc in A15, ch 2, sk A16–A17, hdc in A18, ch 2, sk A19–A20, dc in A21, ch 3, sk A22–A23, tr in A24, ch 3, sk A25–A26.
- Top-left corner: Scroll Corner in A27.
- Left side: Ch 3, sk A28, tr in A29, ch 2, sk A30, dc in A31, ch 2, sk A32, hdc in A33, ch 2, sk A34, sc in A35.
- Bottom-left corner: Ch 2. Join with a sl st.
Count: 40 sts (25 sc, 3 hdc, 4 dc, 4 tr, 4 dtr), plus 14 side spaces, 4 corner spaces, and 2 Scrolls. The stitches get taller toward the corners, which squares the curved arc into a rectangle.
Round 3
Fold each Scroll to the RS so it lies flat between the fan and its corner. Do not work into the Scrolls.
- Bottom: Ch 1, sc in each of the 23 bottom sc. Work 3 sc in the ch-2 corner sp.
- Right side: Sc in sc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in hdc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in dc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in tr, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in dtr. (14 sc) Work 3 sc in the ch-3 corner sp.
- Top: Sc in dtr, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in tr, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in dc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in hdc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in dc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in tr, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in dtr. (23 sc) Work 3 sc in the corner sp.
- Left side: Sc in dtr, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in tr, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in dc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in hdc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in sc. (14 sc) Work 3 sc in the ch-2 corner sp.
- Join and fasten off.
Count: 86 sc. The middle sc of each 3-sc group is the corner stitch.
- Long sides: 1 + 23 + 1 = 25 sts between corners, so 27 sts per side including both corners, which measures 6 in (15.2 cm).
- Short sides: 1 + 14 + 1 = 16 sts between corners, so 18 sts per side including both corners, which measures 4 in (10.2 cm).
- Check: 25 + 16 + 25 + 16 + 4 = 86.
Make All Pieces
Make 216 motifs in Plum, using about 1,296 g / 3,024 m. Weave in the ends as you go. Block the motifs in batches to 6 x 4 in (15.2 x 10.2 cm), pinning the Scrolls flat.
Layout (F = 1 motif, fan up, long sides horizontal):
Row 1: F F F F F F F F F F F F
Row 2: F F F F F F F F F F F F
... (same row of 12)
Row 18: F F F F F F F F F F F F
That’s 12 x 18 = 216 motifs.
Joining
Method: Hold 2 motifs WS together and sl st through the back loop of the near motif and the front loop of the far motif. This gives a flat chain line on the RS.
Strips: Join 12 motifs along their short sides, matching corner to corner and stitch to stitch (18 sl sts per seam). Each strip measures 72 x 4 in (182.9 x 10.2 cm). Make 18 strips.
Long seams: Join the strips along their long edges, 12 x 27 = 324 sts matched 1 to 1. Where motifs meet, the 2 neighboring corner sts each get their own sl st. Keep the vertical seams lined up.
Tension: Keep the sl sts as loose as the motif stitches. If the seams draw in, use a 4.5 mm hook for joining.
Checkpoint: After 6 strips, the piece should measure 72 x 24 in (182.9 x 61.0 cm). With all 18 strips joined, it should measure 72 x 72 in (182.9 x 182.9 cm).
Border
Border gauge: The border keeps the same 4.5 sts per inch. Each side has 324 sts: 12 x 27 along the top and bottom, and 18 x 18 along the left and right. Each count includes that side’s 2 outer corner sts, and no stitches are added at the seams. That gives 4 x 324 − 4 = 1,292 edge sts in total.
Round 1: Join Plum at a corner. Work 3 sc in each of the 4 outer corner sts and 1 sc in every other st. The middle sc of each group becomes the new corner st. This gives 324 sts between corners on each side. Total: 1,300.
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Work 5 dc in each corner st and 1 dc in every other st. This gives 328 sts between corners on each side. Total: 1,316.
Round 3: In each corner st, work a 9-tr corner shell. Along each side, sk 2, sc in the next 2 sts, sk 2, 7 tr in the next st; repeat 46 times. Then sk 2, sc in the next 2 sts, sk 2, and work the next corner shell. Each side has 46 shells (322 tr) and 94 sc, for 416 sts. Total: 4 x 416 + 36 = 1,700.
Round 4: Sl st in each sc. For each 7-tr shell: sc in each of the first 3 tr, (sc, Picot, sc) in the center tr, sc in each of the last 3 tr. For each corner shell: 4 sc, (sc, Picot, sc), 4 sc. Fasten off.
Why the math works: From 1 corner st to the next, Round 2 spans 328 + 1 = 329 sts. Since 329 = 7 x 47, the 7-st repeat fits exactly 47 times per side (46 side shells plus the corner shell). Each shell sits on about 1.55 in (3.9 cm) of edge, so the scallops lie flat. The rounds add roughly 0.25 in (0.6 cm), 0.5 in (1.3 cm), and 0.75 in (1.9 cm) for Rounds 1, 2, and 3–4 together. That’s 1.5 in (3.8 cm) per side.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all the remaining ends along the WS seams.
- Lay the coverlet RS up. If you don’t have room, block it in quarters.
- Pin the corners to a 75 x 75 in (190.5 x 190.5 cm) square.
- Pin along each edge every 12 in (30.5 cm), keeping the seams straight.
- Pin out each picot tip.
- Mist until damp and press the fans and Scrolls flat.
- Let it dry fully before unpinning.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Every motif has 86 sts and measures 6 x 4 in (15.2 x 10.2 cm).
- [ ] All the fans point up, with the Scrolls lying flat.
- [ ] Seams are 18 sts on the short sides and 324 sts on the long seams.
- [ ] Before the border, the piece measures 72 x 72 in (182.9 x 182.9 cm).
- [ ] Border Rounds 1–3 have 1,300, 1,316, and 1,700 sts.
- [ ] There are 47 scallops per side.
- [ ] The finished coverlet measures 75 x 75 in (190.5 x 190.5 cm).
Troubleshooting
- The fan cups: You’ve missed an increase. The counts should be 7, 14, 21, 28, 35.
- The fan ruffles: Use a 3.75 mm hook for Rows 4–5.
- The motif isn’t rectangular: Check the stitch heights in Round 2, then block it firmly.
- A Scroll flips up: Tack the ring down with the yarn tail.
- A seam puckers: Recount it to 18 or 27 sts per motif side.
- The border ruffles: Use a smaller hook for Round 3.
- The border cups: Loosen your tension in Round 1.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then press out the water in a towel. Dry flat and reshape the fans and Scrolls while damp.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other in this order:
- The fan measures 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across.
- Each motif is 6 x 4 in (15.2 x 10.2 cm), with 27 sts on the long sides and 18 sts on the short sides.
- The joined grid is 72 x 72 in (182.9 x 182.9 cm), with 324 sts per side.
- The 1.5 in (3.8 cm) border brings it to 75 x 75 in (190.5 x 190.5 cm).
Check each stage before you move on to the next.
