Lavender Fan Hanging Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

This hanging holder stores two spare rolls on a slim, wall-mounted panel. The back panel is worked in solid lavender single crochet. The two pockets have lavender fan-lace bands, and each band is separated by a wavy sage green stripe. A sage green shell border runs all the way around the panel, so the outline is gently scalloped.

The palette is calm and suits a spa-style bathroom: lavender as the main color and soft sage as the accent. The fan lace is open enough to look delicate, and the solid panel keeps the holder sturdy when it’s loaded.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished holder measures 8.25 in (21.0 cm) wide by 17.5 in (44.5 cm) tall, not counting the hanging tab.

You make four pieces: a back panel worked in rows, two pockets worked in the round from a flat circle base, and a hanging tab. You sew the pockets and tab onto the panel, then finish with a two-round border.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 8.25 in x 17.5 in (21.0 cm x 44.5 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Number of pieces: 4 (1 panel, 2 pockets, 1 tab)
  • Layout: Pockets stacked vertically and centered on the panel
  • Panel size before border: 6.75 in x 16 in (17.1 cm x 40.6 cm)
  • Pocket size: 15 in (38.1 cm) around, walls 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall
  • Border depth: 0.75 in (1.9 cm) on every side

Materials

Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton. It holds its shape, survives washing and shows the fan stitches clearly. Avoid fuzzy yarns, which blur the lace.

  • Lavender (Color A): 250 g / 475 m
  • Sage green (Color B): 100 g / 190 m
  • 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
  • Wooden ring, 2.5 in (6.4 cm) across
  • Tapestry needle
  • 6–8 locking stitch markers
  • Rust-proof pins
  • Blocking mat

All quantities include a margin of about 15 percent for your gauge swatch and small differences in tension.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • sk: skip
  • sp: space
  • BLO: back loop only
  • MR: magic ring
  • rep: repeat
  • WS: wrong side

Special stitches

  • Fan: (dc, ch 1) 4 times in the same st, then dc in that same st. This makes 5 dc and 4 ch-1 sps, which is 9 sts.
  • Shell: 5 dc in the same st.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in single crochet. That’s 4 sts and 4.5 rows per inch.

Make one pocket first and check it before you start the panel. It’s the fastest way to test both your sc gauge and your fan gauge.

Checkpoints

  • Pocket base, after Round 10: 4.5–4.75 in (11.4–12.1 cm) across, lying flat.
  • Pocket, after Round 13: each fan repeat spans 2.5 in (6.4 cm).
  • Finished pocket: 15 in (38.1 cm) around and 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall.
  • Panel, after Row 18: 6.75 in (17.1 cm) wide and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.

If your pieces are off

  • Too big: go down half a hook size.
  • Too small: go up half a hook size.
  • Panel too tall but the right width: your rows are loose. Work a few rows checking each one, or stop at the height checkpoint instead of counting rows.

Back Panel (Make 1)

Use Color A.

Row 1: Ch 28. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (27 sts)

Rows 2–72: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (27 sts)

Panel checkpoint: 6.75 in x 16 in (17.1 cm x 40.6 cm).

Don’t fasten off. Leave the loop on a stitch marker; you’ll use it for Border Round 1.

Pockets (Make 2)

Each pocket starts as a flat circle of single crochet, then turns upward into walls. On every round, ch 1 at the start (it doesn’t count as a stitch) and join with a sl st to the first st at the end.

Base

Use Color A.

Round 1: Work 6 sc in a MR. (6 sts)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)

Round 3: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) 6 times. (18 sts)

Round 4: (Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6 times. (24 sts)

Rounds 5–10: Keep increasing 6 sts evenly per round, working one more sc between increases on each round:

Round Stitches
5 30
6 36
7 42
8 48
9 54
10 60

Checkpoint: the base measures 4.5–4.75 in (11.4–12.1 cm) across.

Walls

Round 11 (Color A): Sc BLO in each st around. (60 sts) This leaves a ridge that turns the walls upward.

Round 12 (Color A): Sc in each st around. (60 sts)

Round 13 (Color A, fan round): Sc in first st, sk 4 sts, Fan in next st, sk 4 sts, sc in next st. Rep from * 5 more times, ending the last rep at *. Join. (6 fans, 6 sc)

Each repeat uses 10 sts (1 + 4 + 1 + 4), so 6 repeats use exactly 60 sts.

Round 14 (Color B): Join B in the first sc. Sc in each sc, each dc and each ch-1 sp around. (60 sts)

Each repeat gives 1 + 5 + 4 = 10 sts. Because the fans are taller than the sc between them, this stripe naturally forms a wave.

Round 15 (Color B): Sc in each st around. (60 sts)

Round 16 (Color A): Repeat Round 13. Always start in the first st, so each sc sits directly above the sc of the previous fan round and the waves stay stacked.

Rounds 17–18 (Color B): Repeat Rounds 14–15. (60 sts each)

Round 19 (Color A): Repeat Round 13.

Rounds 20–21 (Color B): Repeat Rounds 14–15. (60 sts each) Fasten off.

Carry the unused color up the inside at the joins. Those joins will sit against the panel, where nobody sees them. The finished rim follows the fan shapes, so the top edge is wavy.

Pocket checkpoint: 15 in (38.1 cm) around and 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall.

Hanging Tab (Make 1)

Use Color A.

Row 1: Ch 7. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (6 sts)

Rows 2–27: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail.

Checkpoint: 1.5 in x 6 in (3.8 cm x 15.2 cm).

Joining

Sew everything with Color A and a tapestry needle, using a firm whipstitch.

Tab

  1. Slide the tab through the wooden ring and fold it in half.
  2. Lay both ends on the WS of the panel, centered over panel sts 11–16. They should overlap the panel by 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
  3. Sew through both tab layers and the panel, all the way around the overlap.

This leaves a loop about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) tall above the panel.

Pockets

  1. Flatten one pocket so the joins are at the center back.
  2. Mark the 20 back sts on Round 21 (2 fan repeats, from sc to sc). Mark the same 20 sts on the Round 11 ridge below them.
  3. Lower pocket: pin the Round 11 ridge to Row 5 of the panel, across panel sts 4–23. Pin the back of Round 21 to Row 20 across the same sts.
  4. Whipstitch stitch-to-stitch along both lines. Pocket and panel share the same sc gauge, so it’s 1 pocket st to 1 panel st, with no easing.
  5. Sew down both sides of the 20-st back section to close it. The 11 wall rounds (3.25 in, 8.3 cm) match 15 panel rows. Tack once per round, every 1–2 rows on the panel.
  6. Upper pocket: repeat steps 1–5, with the base at Row 38 and the rim at Row 53.

Tension: keep stitches snug but not tight. If the panel puckers, take out that section and resew it more loosely.

Size checkpoint: after joining, the panel still lies flat at 6.75 in x 16 in (17.1 cm x 40.6 cm).

Border

Border gauge: Round 1 keeps 4 sc per inch. Each Round 2 scallop covers 4 Round 1 sts, or 1 in (2.5 cm).

Round 1 (Color A)

Put the live loop from Row 72 back on the hook. Keep the tab folded behind the panel and work only into the panel’s stitches.

Ch 1, turn. Work each side as follows:

  • Top: 3 sc in the first st, sc in the next 25 sts, 3 sc in the last st.
  • Side: working down the row ends, sc in each of the next 9 row ends, sk 1 row end. Rep from * 6 more times, then sc in the last 2 row ends. (65 sc over 72 rows)
  • Bottom: 3 sc in the first foundation ch, sc in the next 25 ch, 3 sc in the last ch.
  • Second side: work up the row ends the same way. (65 sc)

Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off.

Count: 3 + 25 + 3 + 65 + 3 + 25 + 3 + 65 = 192 sts.

The middle sc of each 3-sc group is a corner. Counting the sts between corners:

  • Top and bottom: 27 sts each
  • Sides: 67 sts each
  • Total: 4 corners + 54 + 134 = 192

Round 2 (Color B)

Join B with a sl st in any corner st.

Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in the same st. Sk 1 st, sc in next st, sk 1 st, Shell in next st. Rep from * around, ending with sk 1, sc in next st, sk 1. Join to the top of the ch-3.

Count: 48 shells and 48 sc, which is 288 sts.

Per side, between the corner shells:

  • Top and bottom: 6 shells and 7 sc
  • Long sides: 16 shells and 17 sc

Why the math works: each side plus one corner gives 27 + 1 = 28 sts (top and bottom) or 67 + 1 = 68 sts (long sides). Both are multiples of 4, so the 4-st shell repeat lands on every corner. Since 192 / 4 = 48, the round closes evenly.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends before blocking.
  2. Lightly spray the whole holder with water, or steam it from above without touching the yarn.
  3. Pin the panel flat to 8.25 in x 17.5 in (21.0 cm x 44.5 cm).
  4. Pin out each shell to a rounded point so the scallops are even.
  5. Stuff each pocket with a dry towel to round it out, and ease the green waves so they’re level.
  6. Leave everything to dry completely before unpinning.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Panel is 8.25 in x 17.5 in (21.0 cm x 44.5 cm) and lies flat.
  • 48 even scallops, with one centered on each corner.
  • Each pocket has 6 fans per fan round, stacked in line from round to round.
  • Green stripes are wavy and unbroken.
  • Pocket backs are centered and sewn closed on all sides.
  • Tab is firmly sewn and the ring turns freely.
  • A roll fits snugly in each pocket.

Troubleshooting

  • Base ruffles: your increases are stacking up. Stagger them, or go down a hook size for the base only.
  • Base cups: you missed increases. Check that Round 10 has 60 sts.
  • Fans lean or drift: the round didn’t start in the first st. Recount 10 sts per repeat.
  • Border ripples: too many sc along the sides. Check that each side has 65 sc.
  • Border cups: too few sc. Add back the skipped row ends.
  • Pocket sags: add tacking stitches along the sides of the back section.

Care

Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry, reshaping the scallops and pockets while damp. Remove the wooden ring before washing.

Final Notes

The measurements build on each other in a chain:

  1. Gauge of 4 sc per inch.
  2. A 27-st panel, 6.75 in (17.1 cm) wide and 16 in (40.6 cm) tall.
  3. A 192-st first border round.
  4. 48 shells, giving a finished size of 8.25 in x 17.5 in (21.0 cm x 44.5 cm).
  5. Two 60-st pockets with 6 fans each, sewn 1:1 across 20 panel sts.

Check each link before you move to the next, and the holder will hang straight and hold its rolls neatly. Happy crocheting!
