The Bluebell Cascade is a doorway curtain with a navy openwork lace header and 31 beaded flower strands. The header has a filet diamond pattern and hangs from a wooden rod on six crochet loops. Below it, the strands fall at four different lengths. Each strand carries flowers, small navy beads and dark green leaves, and most strands end in a little navy bell.
The flowers come in three colors: light blue, dark navy and white. Each has a contrasting center bead. The overall look is airy, cottage-style and very blue, the kind of piece that catches light in a hallway.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The header finishes at 32 in (81.3 cm) wide and 7.5 in (19.1 cm) deep. The longest strand drops 53.75 in (136.5 cm) from the top of the header, and the shortest drops 34.5 in (87.6 cm).
Construction is modular. You crochet the filet header flat, add a single crochet border with hanging loops, then chain 31 beaded cords directly from the bottom edge. The flowers, leaves and bells are made separately and sewn onto the cords.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished header: 32 in x 7.5 in (81.3 cm x 19.1 cm), not counting the loops
- Drop from top of header: longest 53.75 in (136.5 cm), shortest 34.5 in (87.6 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 1 header, 31 cords, 172 flowers, 172 leaves, 24 bells
- Layout: 31 strands spaced 1 in (2.5 cm) apart, in an A-B-C-D length repeat

Materials
Use a smooth, mercerized worsted cotton. Cotton holds the mesh crisp, keeps the petals defined and doesn’t stretch much under the weight of the beads. Avoid fuzzy or splitty yarns, because the filet squares will blur.

Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sp: space
- rnd: round
- inc: 2 sc in the same st
- RS / WS: right side / wrong side
Special stitches:
- Bead-ch: Slide one pre-strung bead up against the hook, yarn over (behind the bead) and pull through. One bead-ch counts as 1 ch.
- Mesh: ch 2, skip 2 sts (or one ch-2 sp), dc in next dc.
- Block: 2 dc in the ch-2 sp (or dc in the next 2 dc), then dc in the next dc.
Each mesh or block is 3 sts wide.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Filet gauge: 16 sts and 8 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm). That works out to 4 sts and 2 rows per inch.
Sc gauge: 4 sts and 4 rows per inch.
Chain gauge: 5 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm).
Test one of each piece first: one flower, one leaf, one bell and a 30-ch length of chain. Measure them before you commit to 400 pieces.
Checkpoints:
- Flower: 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across
- Leaf: 1 in (2.5 cm) long
- Bell: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall
- 30 ch: 6 in (15.2 cm)
- Header after Row 4: 31 in (78.7 cm) wide
- Header after Row 13: 6.5 in (16.5 cm) deep
If a piece is too big, go down 0.5 mm. If it’s too small, go up 0.5 mm. Don’t change the stitch counts. Chain gauge matters most for the cords, so measure every 30 ch while you work.

Header
The header is worked flat in rows, from the top edge down. All rows have 124 sts, which is 41 meshes or blocks plus 1 dc.
Foundation: With navy, ch 126.
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (the skipped ch count as 1 dc) and in each ch across, turn. (124 dc)
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc. Work 40 more meshes across, ending in the top of the turning ch, turn. (41 meshes = 42 dc + 82 ch = 124 sts)
Row 3: Ch 5, then work 41 meshes across, turn. (124 sts)
Diamond rows: Begin each row with ch 3 if the first unit is a block, or ch 5 if it’s a mesh. Each repeat is 8 units, which makes five diamonds with one open mesh at each edge.
- Row 4: 4 mesh, 1 block, 7 mesh, 1 block 4 times, 4 mesh.
- Row 5: 3 mesh, block, mesh, block, 5 mesh, block, mesh, block 4 times, 3 mesh.
- Row 6: 2 mesh, block, 3 mesh, block, 3 mesh, block, 3 mesh, block 4 times, 2 mesh.
- Row 7: 1 mesh, block, 5 mesh, block, 1 mesh, block, 5 mesh, block 4 times, 1 mesh.
- Row 8: Repeat Row 6.
- Row 9: Repeat Row 5.
- Row 10: Repeat Row 4.
Check: every diamond row totals 41 units, which is 124 sts.
Rows 11–12: Repeat Row 3.
Row 13: Ch 3, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc across. (124 dc) Do not fasten off.
Checkpoint: 31 in x 6.5 in (78.7 cm x 16.5 cm).
Flowers (make 172)
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 8 sc in ring, sl st to first sc. (8 sc)
Rnd 2: (Sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st) in next sc 8 times. (8 petals)
Fasten off and leave a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Pull the ring closed. Sew one 8 mm center bead into the ring opening with sewing thread.
Checkpoint: 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across.
Leaves (make 172)
With green, ch 6. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, dc in next, hdc in next, then (sc, ch 2, sc) in last ch.
Rotate and work along the opposite side of the foundation: hdc in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in last ch. Sl st to first sc.
Fasten off and leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail.
Checkpoint: 1 in (2.5 cm) long.
Bells (make 24)
With navy:
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6)
- Rnd 2: Sc in each st. (6)
- Rnd 3: Sc, inc 3 times. (9)
- Rnd 4: Inc in each st. (18)
- Rnd 5: Sc in each st, sl st to first sc. (18)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Leave the magic ring slightly open so a cord can pass through.
Checkpoint: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall, with a 1.4 in (3.6 cm) opening.
Make All Pieces
Strand types (lengths measured from the header to the end of the cord):
- A (8 strands): 7 flowers, bell ending. Cord 45 in (114.3 cm).
- B (8 strands): 5 flowers, bell ending. Cord 33 in (83.8 cm).
- C (8 strands): 6 flowers, bell ending. Cord 39 in (99.1 cm).
- D (7 strands): 4 flowers, bead-tail ending. Cord 27 in (68.6 cm).
Flower color order, top to bottom:
- A: LIGHT NAVY LIGHT WHITE LIGHT NAVY LIGHT
- B: NAVY LIGHT WHITE LIGHT NAVY
- C: LIGHT WHITE LIGHT NAVY LIGHT WHITE
- D: WHITE LIGHT NAVY LIGHT
Flower totals:
- Light blue: 32 + 16 + 24 + 14 = 86
- Navy: 16 + 16 + 8 + 7 = 47
- White: 8 + 8 + 16 + 7 = 39
- All flowers: 172
Make one leaf per flower (172 leaves) and one bell per A, B and C strand (24 bells).
Layout grid, strands left to right:
STRANDS 1–16: A B C D A B C D A B C D A B C D
STRANDS 17–31: A B C D A B C D A B C D A B C
TIER 1 (top flowers): LIGHT NAVY LIGHT WHITE, repeating across
Because each length type has its own color sequence, the colors shift diagonally down the curtain instead of forming stripes.
Joining
Work the header border and loops first (see Border). The cords are chained directly from Border Rnd 2.
Cord positions: Along the bottom edge, there are 124 sts between the corner groups. Attach cords in sts 3, 7, 11 and so on, every 4th st, up to st 123. That gives 31 cords spaced 1 in (2.5 cm) apart. There are 2 sts before the first cord and 1 st after the last. This 0.25 in (0.6 cm) offset is invisible once the curtain hangs.
Pre-string beads onto the navy yarn before attaching each cord:
- A: 23 beads
- B: 17 beads
- C: 20 beads
- D: 14 beads
Module (30 ch = 6 in / 15.2 cm):
- Ch 6, bead-ch, ch 4, bead-ch, ch 4, bead-ch, ch 7.
- Ch 1 and mark it L (leaf).
- Ch 4, then ch 1 and mark it F (flower).
Each cord:
- With the RS facing, sl st into the cord position and ch 10 (lead).
- Work modules: 7 for A, 5 for B, 6 for C, 4 for D.
- Work the ending:
- A, B and C: Ch 4, bead-ch (5 ch). Fasten off with a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail. Thread the tail through the bell’s ring from the top, add the last bead and knot it so it hangs inside the bell as a clapper.
- D: Ch 3, bead-ch twice (5 ch). Fasten off and weave the tail into the last chains.
Cord counts:
- A: 10 + 210 + 5 = 225 ch, 45 in (114.3 cm)
- B: 10 + 150 + 5 = 165 ch, 33 in (83.8 cm)
- C: 10 + 180 + 5 = 195 ch, 39 in (99.1 cm)
- D: 10 + 120 + 5 = 135 ch, 27 in (68.6 cm)
Attaching flowers and leaves: Center each flower over its F ch and sew through Rnd 1 into the chain. Sew a leaf at each L ch, angled outward, and alternate left and right down the cord. Bells sit flush under the last bead.
Tension: Keep the chains even and slightly firm. Loose chains stretch under the weight of the flowers.
Checkpoint: Hang the header and measure the cords. Each should be within 0.5 in (1.3 cm) of its target length.
Border
Border gauge: 4 sc per inch along every edge, matching the header’s 4 sts per inch. On the sides, work 2 sc per dc row end: 13 rows x 2 = 26 sc over 6.5 in (16.5 cm), which is 4 sc/in.
Rnd 1: Continuing from Row 13, ch 1. Work 1 sc in each of the 124 sts along each long edge, with 3 sc in each corner st. Work 26 sc along each short edge.
- Count between corner groups: 122 per long side, 26 per short side, plus 3 per corner
- Total: 300 sc worked 1 per st or row-end position, plus 2 extra at each of 4 corners = 308
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc, with 3 sc in each corner-center sc.
- Count between corner groups: 124 per long side, 28 per short side, plus 3 per corner
- Total: 308 sc worked 1 per st, plus 8 corner extras = 316
Fasten off.
Loops (make 6 along the top edge): Use the 124 sts between the corner groups. Skip 2 sts, then work a loop over the next 5 sts. Repeat (skip 18, loop over 5) 5 more times. Two sts remain at the end: 2 + 30 + 90 + 2 = 124. The loops are 5.75 in (14.6 cm) apart, center to center.
Each loop:
- Row 1: Join navy, sc in next 5 sts. (5)
- Rows 2–16: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st. (5)
That’s 4 in (10.2 cm) long. Fold the loop to the WS and whipstitch the last row behind Border Rnd 1. Each loop fits a rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter.
Why the math works:
- Width: 124 sts / 4 = 31 in, plus 0.5 in on each edge = 32 in (81.3 cm)
- Depth: 6.5 in + 1 in = 7.5 in (19.1 cm)
Final Blocking
- Pin the header RS up to 32 in x 7.5 in (81.3 cm x 19.1 cm), keeping the edges straight.
- Pin every diamond square open so the mesh stays even.
- Mist with water until damp, then let it dry completely.
- Steam the flowers and leaves lightly from above. Don’t touch the iron to the beads.
- Hang the curtain and let the cords straighten under their own weight for 24 hours.
- Re-measure each cord against its target length.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Header measures 32 in x 7.5 in (81.3 cm x 19.1 cm)
- Five diamonds are centered, with one open mesh at each edge
- Six loops are evenly spaced and securely sewn
- 31 cords hang in the A-B-C-D order
- Each cord is within 0.5 in (1.3 cm) of its target length
- 172 flowers, each with a secure center bead
- Leaves alternate sides down each cord
- Bell clappers are knotted tight
- All ends are woven in
Troubleshooting
- Header ruffles: Your chain-2 spaces are too loose. Tighten them or go down a hook size.
- Header pulls narrow: Check that each row has 124 sts.
- Cords too long: Your chain is stretching. Chain more firmly, or remove 1 ch per module.
- Flowers cup: Loosen the petal dc and block the flowers flat.
- Beads won’t slide: Use a floss threader, or choose beads with larger holes.
- Strands twist: Re-sew the flowers so they face forward, then steam the cord.
- Bells flare unevenly: Redo Rnd 4 with an even tension.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Dry the header flat and hang the strands to dry.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. The filet gauge of 4 sts/in gives the 31 in (78.7 cm) header. Two sc rounds bring it to 32 in x 7.5 in (81.3 cm x 19.1 cm). The 124 border sts set 31 cords 1 in (2.5 cm) apart, and 30-ch modules place a flower every 6 in (15.2 cm).
Optional: For a wider doorway, add one 8-unit diamond repeat (24 sts) to the header and four more strands.
Happy crocheting!
