Coastal Diamond Strand Curtain Crochet Pattern

This curtain is made of long, airy strands of open diamond frames. Each strand hangs from a solid crocheted header band and ends in a plump tassel with a rounded head. Light comes through the center of every diamond, so the panel softens the view without blocking it.

There are two colors: a dusty denim blue and a warm natural cream. Each strand is one color, and the strands alternate blue, cream, blue, cream across the panel. The header band and its tab loops are cream. The style is relaxed, coastal and a little boho.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. One finished panel is 40 in (101.6 cm) wide and 84 in (213.4 cm) long, measured from the top of the header to the tassel tips. That length doesn’t include the tab loops. The window in the photo has a pair of panels, so make two.

The construction is simple and repetitive. Work small square frames in the round and turn them on point so they become diamonds. Join 14 of them as you go to make each vertical strand, then add a tassel to the bottom. Finally, crochet a header band across the tops of 8 strands and add 7 tab loops.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished panel size: 40 in (101.6 cm) wide x 84 in (213.4 cm) long, plus tab loops
  • Skill level: Intermediate (easy stitches, long assembly)
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Pieces per panel: 112 diamond motifs, 8 tassels, 1 header band
  • Layout: 8 strands across x 14 motifs down
  • Motif size: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side; 5 in (12.7 cm) tip to tip on point
  • Strand length (motifs only): 76.5 in (194.3 cm)
  • Header size before tabs and edging: 40 in (101.6 cm) x 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • Header border depth: 2 in (5.1 cm), and the tabs add a 3 in (7.6 cm) loop above it

Materials

Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton keeps the diamonds crisp and hangs straight. Avoid fuzzy yarns, because they blur the open centers. The amounts below assume about 190 m per 100 g.

Per panel:
– Color A, Denim Blue: 200 g / 380 m (56 motifs, 4 tassels)
– Color B, Natural Cream: 245 g / 460 m (56 motifs, 4 tassels, header and tabs)

For the pair shown:
– Color A, Denim Blue: 400 g / 760 m
– Color B, Natural Cream: 490 g / 920 m

All quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge differences, swatching and tassel trimming.

Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stiff card 10 in (25.4 cm) long, for the tassels
– Small amount of scrap yarn, for the tassel heads
– Stitch markers
– Measuring tape
– Blocking mats, pins and a spray bottle
– Curtain rod

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS / WS – right side / wrong side

Special technique – Link join: Ch 2 and remove the hook. Insert the hook from front to back through the named ch-2 sp of the other piece, pick up the dropped loop and pull it through as a sl st. Ch 2. The 4 link chains never count as stitches.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Make one complete motif before anything else. Block it lightly and measure it.

  • Motif gauge: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side and 5 in (12.7 cm) tip to tip after Rnd 3
  • Header gauge: 18 hdc = 5 in (12.7 cm); 10 rows of hdc = 4 in (10.2 cm)

Motif checkpoints:
– After Rnd 1: about 2 in (5.1 cm) per side, with a center opening of about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) per side
– After Rnd 2: about 3 in (7.6 cm) per side
– After Rnd 3: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side

If your motif is too big, go down a hook size. If it’s too small, go up a hook size. Being 0.25 in (0.6 cm) off per side makes each diamond about 0.35 in (0.9 cm) off tip to tip. Across the panel that adds up to about 2.8 in (7.1 cm) in width and about 4.9 in (12.4 cm) down each strand, so fix it now.

Diamond Motif

Make 56 motifs in Color A and 56 in Color B per panel. Keep the RS facing the whole time and don’t turn.

The four ch-2 corner spaces are numbered in the order you make them: Corner 1, Corner 2, Corner 3 and Corner 4. Corner 1 becomes the top of the diamond and Corner 3 becomes the bottom.

Foundation: Ch 24 and sl st in the first ch to form a ring, without twisting. Work into the chains themselves, not into the center of the ring. This keeps the center opening large.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 4 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch for Corner 1, [dc in next 5 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch] 3 times for Corners 2, 3 and 4, sl st in top of beg ch-3.
Count: 28 dc and 4 ch-2 sps (7 dc per side, corner dc included).

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 5 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in Corner 1 sp, [dc in next 7 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp] 3 times, dc in last dc, sl st in top of beg ch-3.
Count: 44 dc and 4 ch-2 sps (11 dc per side). Each side is 7 dc worked 1-per-stitch + 4 dc added at its two corners (2 at each end).

Rnd 3 (first motif of each strand): Ch 1, sc in same st and next 7 dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in Corner 1 sp, [sc in next 11 dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner sp] 3 times, sc in last 3 dc, sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Count: 52 sc and 4 ch-2 sps (13 sc per side). Each side is 11 sc worked 1-per-stitch + 2 corner sc added.

The finished motif has a double band of solid dc framed by a firm sc edge. Turned on point with Corner 1 at the top, it becomes a diamond with an open center of about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) per side.

Make All Pieces

For each panel, make:

  • Color A (Denim Blue): 56 motifs, worked as 4 strands of 14
  • Color B (Natural Cream): 56 motifs, worked as 4 strands of 14
  • Tassels: 4 in Color A and 4 in Color B

Double everything for the pair. Here is the strand layout seen from the RS (A = blue, B = cream):

Strand: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Row 1: A B A B A B A B
Row 2: A B A B A B A B
 ... (same for every row)
Row 14: A B A B A B A B
Tassel: A B A B A B A B

Joining

Strands

Join the motifs as you go during Rnd 3, working from the top of the strand down.

Motif 1: Work Rnds 1–3 as written. Corner 1 is the top.

Motifs 2–14: Work Rnds 1–2. For Rnd 3, ch 1, then sc in same st and next 7 dc. In the Corner 1 sp, work: sc, Link join into the Corner 3 sp of the motif above, sc in same Corner 1 sp. Finish the rest of Rnd 3 as written.

Each join connects one corner to one corner. Only the two tips touch, so the side edges hang free and the diamonds stay sharp. Each motif still has 52 sc, with 13 sc per side. The link chains aren’t added to that count.

Keep the link chains at the same tension as your foundation chain. Tight links pull the diamonds into ovals, and loose links make the strand stretch unevenly.

Strand checkpoint: Each link adds about 0.5 in (1.3 cm). Fourteen motifs at 5 in (12.7 cm) plus 13 links at 0.5 in (1.3 cm) gives 76.5 in (194.3 cm). Measure each strand flat before you move on. All 8 strands should be within 0.5 in (1.3 cm) of each other.

Tassels

  1. Wrap matching yarn 40 times around the 10 in (25.4 cm) card.
  2. Slide the bundle off the card and tie the top tightly with a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail.
  3. Tuck a small ball of scrap yarn, about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across, into the top of the bundle.
  4. With a separate strand, wrap 8 times tightly around the bundle just below the ball to form a rounded head, and knot.
  5. Cut the bottom loops. Trim so the tassel is 5 in (12.7 cm) long from the top of the head to the tips.

Thread the top tail through the Corner 3 sp of Motif 14 and knot it securely. Weave the tail into the motif.

Header Border

The header works as this panel’s border. It joins all 8 strands at the top and holds the tabs.

Border gauge: 18 hdc = 5 in (12.7 cm), the same as one motif’s 5 in (12.7 cm) width from tip to tip.

Lay the strands out in order with the RS up and Strand 1 on the right.

Foundation: With Color B, ch 145.

Row 1 (RS, joining row): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 8 ch, Link join into Corner 1 sp of Motif 1 on Strand 1, sc in next 9 ch. [Sc in next 9 ch, Link join into Corner 1 sp of Motif 1 on next strand, sc in next 9 ch] 7 times. Turn.
Count: 144 sc = 8 strands x 18 sc per strand section. The link chains don’t count.

Rows 2–5: Ch 2 (does not count), hdc in each st across. Turn.
Count: 144 hdc in each row.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Don’t fasten off.
Count: 144 sc.

Side edging: Ch 1 and rotate to work down the short side. Work 1 sc in each sc row end and 2 sc in each hdc row end. Fasten off. Repeat on the other short side.
Count: 10 sc per short side (1 + 8 + 1).

Tabs (make 7): With the RS facing, join Color B in Row 6 at the first st of each tab position: sts 1–6, 24–29, 47–52, 70–75, 93–98, 116–121 and 139–144.
– Tab Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st and next 5 sts. Turn. (6 sc)
– Tab Rows 2–24: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (6 sc)

Fasten off with a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. Fold each tab to the WS and whipstitch its last row to the top of Row 2 to make a 3 in (7.6 cm) loop.

Why the math works: Each diamond is 5 in (12.7 cm) wide on point. Each strand section is 18 sts, and 18 sts measure 5 in (12.7 cm). So the header is 8 x 18 = 144 sts, or 40 in (101.6 cm). Each strand hangs from the exact center of its own section, between sts 9 and 10, so the side tips of neighboring diamonds just meet. The tabs use 7 x 6 = 42 sts, and the 6 gaps between them use 6 x 17 = 102 sts, for a total of 144. Each tab is about 1.7 in (4.3 cm) wide and each gap is about 4.7 in (11.9 cm).

Header checkpoint: 40 in (101.6 cm) wide x 2 in (5.1 cm) deep. If the width is off by more than 1 in (2.5 cm), redo the header with a different hook instead of stretching it.

Final Blocking

  1. Lay the header and the top 2–3 motifs of each strand flat on blocking mats.
  2. Pin the header to 40 in (101.6 cm) x 2 in (5.1 cm).
  3. Pin all four corners of each diamond so it measures 5 in (12.7 cm) tip to tip in both directions.
  4. Spray until damp but not soaked, then let it dry completely.
  5. Move down the panel and repeat for the rest of the motifs.
  6. Steam each tassel lightly and smooth the strands with your fingers. Trim the tips even.
  7. Hang the panel for 24 hours so the strands settle.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every motif has 52 sc, with 13 sc per side.
  • Each motif measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side and 5 in (12.7 cm) tip to tip.
  • All 8 strands have 14 motifs and measure 76.5 in (194.3 cm).
  • The colors alternate A, B, A, B across the panel.
  • Each link is about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) and has no twists.
  • The header has 144 sts and measures 40 in (101.6 cm).
  • Each strand hangs from the center of its 18-st section.
  • All 7 tabs are in the right positions and sewn securely.
  • The tassels measure 5 in (12.7 cm) and are firmly knotted.
  • All ends are woven in.

Troubleshooting

The diamond looks rounded, not pointed: The corner ch-2 is too tight. Keep it loose, and pin the corners when blocking.

The center opening closes up: Rnd 1 was worked into the ring instead of the chains. Rework it into each ch.

The strands twist when hanging: A link was joined from the WS. Check that every motif faces RS and rejoin.

The strands are different lengths: The link tension varies. Rework any long or short links to 0.5 in (1.3 cm).

The header ruffles: Your hdc gauge is loose. Go down a hook size for the header only.

The header pulls in and the strands overlap: Your header is too tight. Go up a hook size.

The tassel heads look flat: Use a slightly larger scrap-yarn ball and wrap the neck more firmly.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent. Lay flat to dry and reshape each diamond. Don’t hang the panel while it’s wet, because the weight will stretch the strands.

Final Notes

The measurements build in a simple chain:

  • One motif is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side and 5 in (12.7 cm) tip to tip.
  • Fourteen motifs and 13 links make a 76.5 in (194.3 cm) strand.
  • Eight strands at 18 sts each give a 144-st header that is 40 in (101.6 cm) wide and 2 in (5.1 cm) deep.
  • The full panel is 84 in (213.4 cm) long: 2 in (5.1 cm) of header, plus a 0.5 in (1.3 cm) top link, plus the 76.5 in (194.3 cm) strand, plus a 5 in (12.7 cm) tassel.

Make two panels for the pair, hang them, and enjoy the light coming through.

Happy crocheting!
