Evergreen Lattice Diamond Curtain Crochet Pattern

This curtain is made of hanging strands of small lace diamonds. Each diamond is a granny-style square turned on point. It has an open center ring, eight short spokes, and a crisp single crochet edge. Short, firm chain links join each diamond tip to tip with the next one, and every strand ends in a full yarn tassel.

The palette is two colors: a deep forest green and a soft cream. Each strand uses one color only, and the strands alternate across the rod (green, cream, green, cream). With the light behind them, the diamonds read as a lattice and the window still shows through. The style is boho-meets-cottage, and it works well in a sunny doorway, a window, or as a room divider.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain has 8 strands, with the strand loops spaced 6 in (15.2 cm) apart, so it measures about 47.7 in (121.2 cm) wide across the outer diamond points. Each strand body is 79.4 in (201.7 cm) long, or 84.4 in (214.4 cm) with the tassel.

You will crochet 96 identical motifs in rounds. From the second motif onward, each one joins to the previous motif during its last round, so each strand grows as you go. Tassels go on at the end. The strands are not joined to each other, so they move freely.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 47.7 in (121.2 cm) wide x 84.4 in (214.4 cm) long, including tassels
  • Skill level: Easy+ (basic stitches and a simple join-as-you-go)
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
  • Number of pieces: 96 motifs (48 green, 48 cream) plus 8 tassels
  • Layout: 8 vertical strands of 12 motifs each, colors alternating by strand
  • Piece size: 4 in (10.2 cm) per side; 5.7 in (14.5 cm) from tip to tip when hung on point
  • Size before border: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side after Round 3
  • Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm), one round of single crochet (Round 4)
  • Link length: 1 in (2.5 cm) between motifs

Materials

Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend with about 200 m per 100 g. Cotton keeps good stitch definition, hangs straight, and stretches less than acrylic over a long drop. Avoid fuzzy or very splitty yarns, because the open center and chain spaces should stay clean.

  • Forest green: 325 g / 650 m (711 yd)
  • Cream: 325 g / 650 m (711 yd)

Each motif uses about 11 m (5.5 g). Each tassel uses about 8 m (4 g). All quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge swatches and tails.

Tools:
– 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stitch markers
– A piece of stiff card 5 in (12.7 cm) tall, for the tassels
– Blocking mats and rust-proof pins
– Tape measure
– Curtain rod at least 52 in (132.1 cm) long, plus 8 rings or clips if you’d rather not hang the loops directly on the rod

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp(s) – space(s)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rep – repeat

Special stitch – Link (used in Round 4 of motifs 2–12): Ch 6, sl st in the bottom corner ch-2 sp of the previous motif, then sl st in each of the 6 ch back toward the motif you’re working on. This makes a firm doubled cord 1 in (2.5 cm) long.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Make one complete motif before you start the curtain, and block it lightly. Gauge matters here because small errors add up over 12 motifs per strand.

  • After Round 1: the ring is 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across.
  • After Round 2: the circle is 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across.
  • After Round 3: the square is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side.
  • After Round 4: the square is 4 in (10.2 cm) per side, or 5.7 in (14.5 cm) from corner to corner.

If your motif is too big: go down to a 4 mm (US G-6) hook. A motif that is 0.25 in (0.6 cm) too big per side adds about 4.2 in (10.7 cm) to each strand.

If your motif is too small: go up to a 5 mm (US H-8) hook. Make sure your dc stitches stand at full height, because short dc often shrinks Round 3.

Motif Pattern

Make each motif in a single color. Do not turn between rounds.

Round 1: Ch 5, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in ring, sl st in top of beg ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, ch 2, skip next st, 2 dc in next st, ch 2, skip next st; rep from * 6 more times, sl st in top of beg ch-3. (16 dc in 8 pairs, 8 ch-2 sps)*

These 8 pairs of dc are the spokes around the open center.

Round 3 (squaring round): Sl st in next dc and in next ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp for the first corner, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; rep from * 2 more times, sl st in top of beg ch-3. (36 dc, 4 ch-3 corner sps, 8 ch-1 sps)*

Each side now has 9 dc and 2 ch-1 sps between the corner spaces, for 11 sts per side. The square measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side.

Round 4 (edging): This is the border round. It is written out in full in the Border section below. Use the Top Loop version for motif 1 of each strand and the Link version for motifs 2–12.

Make All Pieces

  • Green: 48 motifs (4 strands x 12) and 4 tassels
  • Cream: 48 motifs (4 strands x 12) and 4 tassels

Make one strand at a time. On the last motif of each strand, leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail to weave in.

Layout (G = green motif, C = cream motif, columns = strands, read left to right):

Joining

Motifs join tip to tip with the Link stitch during Round 4. Corner 1 (the top) of the new motif connects to Corner 3 (the bottom) of the previous motif. Corner 3 is always the corner directly opposite Corner 1.

Stitch-to-stitch logic: The link replaces the ch-2 at Corner 1 only. The new motif still has 2 sc on each side of that corner, so it keeps all 60 sc. The previous motif keeps its ch-2 at Corner 3, and the link’s sl st goes into that space. Nothing is added to or removed from either motif’s stitch count.

Tension advice: Work the 6 link chains at your normal tension, and work the return sl sts loosely, about one hook size looser in feel. Tight sl sts shorten the link and make the strand twist. Before you continue, check that the link lies straight and is not twisted. The front of both motifs should face you.

Size checkpoint: After joining 3 motifs, hang the piece and measure it. Three motifs plus 2 links should measure 3 x 5.7 in + 2 x 1 in = 19.1 in (48.5 cm). A full strand of 12 motifs plus 11 links measures 68.4 in (173.7 cm) + 11 in (27.9 cm) = 79.4 in (201.7 cm).

Hanging: Space the 8 top loops 6 in (15.2 cm) apart on the rod. The diamonds are 5.7 in (14.5 cm) wide, which leaves a 0.3 in (0.8 cm) gap between neighboring side points. The total width is 7 x 6 in + 5.7 in = 47.7 in (121.2 cm).

Border (Round 4 Edging)

Border gauge: 15 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) along one side, including the corner sc.

This round is a conversion round. You work 1 sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp of Round 3, which is 36 + 8 = 44 sts. Then you add 2 sc on each side of every corner space, which is 4 corners x 4 sc = 16 sc. That gives 44 + 16 = 60 sc.

Round 4, Top Loop version (motif 1 of each strand): Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 2 dc. In the next corner ch-3 sp (Corner 1, the top), work (2 sc, ch 12, 2 sc). The ch-12 makes a hanging loop of about 2 in (5.1 cm). Sc in next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 3 dc, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner sp; rep from * 2 more times for Corners 2, 3, and 4. Sc in next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sl st in first sc. (60 sc: 15 sc per side)* Fasten off.

Round 4, Link version (motifs 2–12): Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 2 dc. In Corner 1, work 2 sc, then the Link (ch 6, sl st in the Corner 3 ch-2 sp of the previous motif, sl st in each of the 6 ch back), then 2 sc in the same corner sp. Work the rest of the round exactly as in the Top Loop version. (60 sc: 15 sc per side) Fasten off.

Per-side count: Each side has 2 sc in the corner sp at one end, 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 = 11 sc along the side, and 2 sc in the corner sp at the other end, for 2 + 11 + 2 = 15 sc. The ch-2 corner sps (or the loop or link) sit between sides and are not counted as stitches.

Why the math works: Round 3 has 11 sts per side at 3.5 in (8.9 cm). Adding 4 corner sc per side brings that to 15 sc. One round of sc adds 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on each edge, so 3.5 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4 in (10.2 cm). That matches the border gauge of 15 sc = 4 in, so the edges stay flat and don’t ruffle or cup.

Tassels (8)

Wrap matching yarn 30 times around the 5 in (12.7 cm) card. Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) tie under the wraps at the top and knot it tightly. Cut through the wraps at the bottom. Wrap a second strand 6 times around the neck, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top, then knot it and hide the ends inside the tassel. Use the top tie to knot the tassel through the Corner 3 ch-2 sp of motif 12. Trim the tassel to 5 in (12.7 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends along the sc edging, away from the open center.
  2. Spritz each strand lightly until it is damp but not wet.
  3. Pin each motif flat to a 4 in (10.2 cm) square, with the corner points pinned straight.
  4. Check that each link lies straight and measures 1 in (2.5 cm).
  5. Let everything dry completely.
  6. Steam the tassels and comb the strands straight. Trim any uneven ends.
  7. Let the strands hang for 24 hours, then measure again. Cotton may relax by up to 0.5 in (1.3 cm) per strand.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every motif has 60 sc, with 15 sc per side.
  • Every diamond measures 4 in (10.2 cm) per side.
  • Every strand has 12 motifs and 11 links.
  • All strand bodies measure 79.4 in (201.7 cm), within 0.5 in (1.3 cm).
  • All front sides face the same way.
  • All top loops are the same size.
  • Tassels measure 5 in (12.7 cm) and match their strand color.
  • Strands alternate green and cream, starting with green on the left.

Troubleshooting

  • Motif cups: The Round 1 dc are too tight, or the ring is too small. Try ch 6 for the ring.
  • Edges ruffle: You added extra sc at the corners. Work only 2 sc on each side of a corner.
  • Strand twists: One motif was joined with its back facing forward. Undo that motif’s Round 4 and rejoin it.
  • Links are uneven: Recount the 6 ch and loosen the return sl sts.
  • Strands differ in length: Measure before blocking, then block the short strand slightly longer.
  • Center hole closes up: Round 1 is too crowded. Make sure you have exactly 15 dc plus the ch-3.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, and lay each strand flat to dry. Don’t tumble dry, because it can tangle the tassels and stretch the links.

Final Notes

The measurement chain is short and easy to check. Round 3 measures 3.5 in (8.9 cm) per side. Round 4 brings each motif to 4 in (10.2 cm) per side, or 5.7 in (14.5 cm) on point. Twelve motifs plus eleven 1 in (2.5 cm) links make a 79.4 in (201.7 cm) strand, and the tassel brings it to 84.4 in (214.4 cm). Eight strands spaced 6 in (15.2 cm) apart give a width of 47.7 in (121.2 cm).

Check your gauge on the first motif and your length after three. After that, the rest is relaxing repetition.

Happy crocheting!
