This bedspread is made of lacy deep burgundy squares joined in a checkerboard. Every other square has a raised golden bell with a burgundy bow and a ruffled double hem. Gold petals peek out from behind each bell. The squares in between are open burgundy lace flowers with small gold centers.
There are only two colors: a rich wine burgundy and a warm mustard gold. Bulky yarn gives a plush, chunky texture and keeps the project moving. The style is cozy holiday cottage. It is festive enough for December and warm enough to leave out all winter.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished bedspread measures 68 x 82 in (172.7 x 208.3 cm).
First you make 99 identical 7 in (17.8 cm) lace squares. Then you make 50 bells with bows and sew them on. Next you join all the squares into a 9 x 11 grid with slip stitches. A 4-round lace border finishes the edge.

Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 12 sc and 13 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Make one complete Bell Block first and check it at each stage:
- After Round 3: The flower is about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across.
- After Round 6: About 6 in (15.2 cm) square.
- After Round 7: About 6.3 in (16.0 cm) square.
- After Round 8: Exactly 7 in (17.8 cm) square, with 21 sts per side.
- Bell: About 4.75 in (12.1 cm) tall and 5 in (12.7 cm) wide when flattened.
If the block is more than 0.25 in (0.6 cm) too big, switch to a 5.5 mm hook. If it is too small by the same amount, switch to a 6.5 mm hook. Small errors matter here: 0.25 in per block adds up to 2.25 in (5.7 cm) across 9 blocks.

Base Square (Make 99)
The two block types differ only in color:
- Bell Block (50): Rounds 1–2 in B, Round 3 in G, Rounds 4–8 in B.
- Flower Block (49): Round 1 in G, Rounds 2–8 in B.
Round 1: Make an MR. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 15 dc into the ring. Join. (16 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st. Ch 5, skip 1 st, sc in the next st. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5. Join. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 loops)
Round 3 (petals): Work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each loop. Join. (8 petals, 56 sts)
Round 4: Working behind the petals, ch 1 and BPsc around the first Round 2 sc. Ch 6, BPsc around the next Round 2 sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 6. Join. (8 ch-6 loops)
Round 5: Sl st into the first loop. Ch 3, then work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same loop. Ch 1, 3 dc in the next loop, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next loop. Repeat from * 2 more times. Finish with ch 1, 3 dc in the last loop, ch 1. Join. (36 dc: 9 dc per side)
Round 6: Sl st to the corner sp. Ch 3, then work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the corner. Ch 1, 3 dc in each ch-1 sp to the corner, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the corner. Repeat from * around. Join. (48 dc: 12 dc and 3 ch-1 sps per side)
Round 7 (conversion): Ch 1. Sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp, and work 3 sc in each corner sp. Join. (72 sts = 60 worked 1 per st/sp + 12 corner sc. That is 19 per side, including both corner centers.)
Round 8 (trim): Ch 1. Sc in each st, and work 3 sc in each corner center. Join and fasten off. (80 sts = 72 worked 1 per st + 8 extra. That is 21 per side, including both corner centers.)
At 3 sts per in, 21 sts makes a 7 in (17.8 cm) side.
Bell Appliqué (Make 50 in G)
Work top-down in continuous rounds. Mark the first st of each round.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in an MR. (6)
Round 2: Inc in each st. (12)
Rounds 3–4: Sc in each st. (12)
Round 5: (Sc, inc) 6 times. (18)
Rounds 6–7: Sc in each st. (18)
Round 8: (Sc in the next 2 sts, inc) 6 times. (24)
Rounds 9–10: Sc in each st. (24)
Round 11: Sc in BLO of each st. (24) This leaves the front loops of Round 10 free for the ridge band.
Round 12: (Sc in the next 3 sts, inc) 6 times. Sl st in the next st. (30)
Round 13 (outer ruffle): Working in FLO, sc in the next st, skip 2, 7 dc in the next st, skip 2. Repeat from * 5 times. Join. (5 scallops, 40 sts)
Round 14 (inner ruffle): Fold Round 13 forward. Work into the free back loops of Round 12, directly behind Round 13: sc, skip 2, 9 tr in the next st, skip 2. Repeat from * 5 times. Join and fasten off. (5 scallops, 50 sts) These longer scallops hang below the outer ruffle.
Ridge band: Join G in a free front loop of Round 10. Sl st loosely in each front loop around. (24 sl st) This makes a raised cord just above the flare.
Top knot: Work 6 sc in an MR, then sc in each st for 1 round. (6) Stuff the tail inside and cinch it closed. The knot is about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across.
Hanging ring: Ch 8 and join with a sl st to form a ring. Work 12 sc into the ring. Join. (12)
Bow (B, 2 loops per bell): Ch 18 and join to form a ring. Work 24 sc into the ring. Join. (24) Pinch each ring at the join to make a teardrop. Sew 2 teardrop points together to make a bow 5 in (12.7 cm) wide.
Assembly:
- Flatten the bell on a Bell Block. Place its top 1.75 in (4.4 cm) below the block’s upper edge. The ruffle should end 0.5 in (1.3 cm) above the lower edge, with the gold petals framing the dome.
- Tuck a little fiberfill into the dome. Whipstitch the back layer of the bell to the block along the Round 12 line, leaving both ruffles free.
- Sew the bow over the top of the bell, the knot over the center of the bow and the ring just above the knot.
Point all the bells toward the edge that will sit at the head of the bed.
Make All Pieces
- Bell Blocks: 50 (B with G petals). Each gets 1 G bell, 1 G knot, 1 G ring and 1 B bow.
- Flower Blocks: 49 (B with a G center)
In the grid, BELL is a Bell Block and FLWR is a Flower Block.
ROW 1: BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL
ROW 2: FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR
ROW 3: BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL
ROW 4: FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR
ROW 5: BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL
ROW 6: FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR
ROW 7: BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL
ROW 8: FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR
ROW 9: BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL
ROW 10: FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR
ROW 11: BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL FLWR BELL
The 6 odd rows have 5 bells each and the 5 even rows have 4, for 50 bells. Together with the 49 Flower Blocks, that makes 99 blocks.
Joining
Method: Hold the blocks right side up. With B, sl st through the back loops of both edges. This leaves a flat chain line on the front.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Match corner center to corner center. Then join 21 sts to 21 sts, with no sts skipped or added.
Order: Join the 10 horizontal seams first. Each one is 9 x 21 = 189 sl st. Then join the 8 vertical seams, 11 x 21 = 231 sl st each. Where seams cross, ch 1 over the crossing and continue.
Tension: Keep the sl sts as loose as the sc fabric. Stretch the seam every 20 sts. If it puckers, join with a 6.5 mm hook.
Size checkpoint: The joined piece should measure 63 x 77 in (160.0 x 195.6 cm), within 1 in (2.5 cm).
Border
Border gauge: 3 sc per in, the same as the blocks. That gives 189 ÷ 3 = 63 in (160.0 cm) and 231 ÷ 3 = 77 in (195.6 cm).
Starting count: The short sides have 9 x 21 = 189 sts and the long sides have 11 x 21 = 231 sts. These counts already include each block’s corner sts. Nothing is added at the seams.
Round 1 (B): Sc in each st, working 3 sc in each of the 4 outer corner sts. Join. (844 sts = 836 worked 1 per edge st + 8 corner extras. That is 191 per short side and 233 per long side, including both corner centers.)
Round 2: Ch 1. Work (sc, ch 5, sc) in each corner center. Along the sides, ch 4, skip 1, sc in the next st. Repeat from * to each corner. Join. (95 ch-4 loops per short side, 116 per long side, plus 4 corner loops: 426 loops)
Round 3: Sl st to the center of the first loop. Sc in the loop, ch 5. Repeat from * in each side loop. Work (sc, ch 5, sc), ch 5 in each corner loop. Join. (96 ch-5 loops per short side, 117 per long side, plus 4 corner loops: 430 loops)
Round 4: Work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, picot, 2 dc, hdc, sc) in each side loop and (sc, hdc, 3 dc, picot, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each corner loop. Join and fasten off. (430 scallops)
Why the math works: Between corner centers there are 189 sts on the short sides and 231 on the long sides. Each Round 2 loop moves forward 2 sts. From one corner center to the next is 190 steps on a short side and 232 on a long side, and both numbers are even. So the loops come out to exactly 95 and 116 with nothing left over. Round 3 adds only 1 loop per corner, and Round 4 puts 1 scallop in every loop. The border adds 2.5 in (6.4 cm) per side, so the bedspread grows from 63 to 68 in (160.0 to 172.7 cm) and from 77 to 82 in (195.6 to 208.3 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along the seams.
- Lay the bedspread face up on mats.
- Pin it to 68 x 82 in (172.7 x 208.3 cm), corners first.
- Pin each border picot so the lace opens.
- Mist the lace until it is damp, but keep the stuffed bells dry.
- Fluff the ruffles into waves and round out the bow loops.
- Let it dry for 24 hours, then unpin.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- All 99 blocks are 7 in (17.8 cm), with 21 sts per side.
- The bells follow the checkerboard, with one at each corner.
- All bells point the same way.
- Both ruffles show on every bell.
- The seams lie flat.
- The piece is 63 x 77 in (160.0 x 195.6 cm) before the border.
- Border Round 1 has 844 sts and Round 4 has 430 scallops.
- The final size is 68 x 82 in (172.7 x 208.3 cm).
Troubleshooting
- The block cups: The Round 4 chains are too tight. Loosen them or work ch 7.
- The block ruffles: Work Rounds 5–6 with a hook 0.5 mm smaller.
- The bell flares too early: Check that you worked the plain sc rounds between the increase rounds.
- The inner ruffle is hidden: Round 14 must use tr, not dc.
- The ridge band is flat: Work the sl sts more loosely.
- The border waves: Recount Round 1. You need 191 sts on each short side and 233 on each long side.
- The bows droop: Tack the pinched center of the bow to the block.
Care
Hand wash in cool water, or machine wash on a gentle cycle in a large mesh bag, then dry flat. Never iron the bells or bows.

Final Notes
The measurement chain starts with 21 sts at 3 per in, which makes a 7 in (17.8 cm) block. A 9 x 11 grid of blocks measures 63 x 77 in (160.0 x 195.6 cm). The 2.5 in (6.4 cm) border brings it to 68 x 82 in (172.7 x 208.3 cm). Check the first block carefully and every later measurement will follow.
