Magenta Bloom Lace Strip Curtain Crochet Pattern

This curtain is made from flower squares joined into tall, narrow strips. Each square has a magenta center, eight plump mint-green petals and an open magenta frame with fan-shaped corners and a small diamond mesh along the sides. When light comes through the window, the frames glow and the flowers stand out clearly.

The palette is just two colors: bright magenta and soft mint green. The style is vintage garden with a clean, graphic edge. Because the strips are separate, you can hang as many as your window needs. This pattern makes four strips, as shown.

All instructions use US crochet terms. Each finished strip measures 9 in x 41 in (22.9 cm x 104.1 cm) after blocking. Each motif is 8 in (20.3 cm) square.

Construction is simple. Crochet 20 flower motifs in the round. Join them into four columns of five with a slip-stitch seam. Then work a two-round single-crochet border around each strip and hang it with ring clips.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished strip size: 9 in x 41 in (22.9 cm x 104.1 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Number of pieces: 20 square motifs, made into 4 strips
  • Layout: each strip is 1 motif wide x 5 motifs long
  • Motif size: 8 in (20.3 cm) square

Materials

Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton, either mercerized or combed. Cotton holds the petal shape, blocks crisply and stretches very little when the strips hang. The amounts below assume about 170 m per 100 g.

  • Color A – Magenta: 400 g, about 680 m (centers, frames, joining, borders)
  • Color B – Mint Green: 200 g, about 340 m (petals)

These amounts include about 15 percent extra for your test motif and for differences in tension.

Tools:

  • 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle and scissors
  • Stitch markers (at least 4)
  • Measuring tape
  • Blocking mats, rust-proof pins, spray bottle
  • 12 curtain ring clips (3 per strip)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • sp(s) – space(s)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS – right side
  • BLO – back loop only

Special stitch – Corner fan: work (4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr) in the stitch indicated. When a round starts with a fan, the beginning ch 4 counts as the first tr.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Make and block one complete motif before starting the rest. It should measure 8 in (20.3 cm) square, with 31 sc along each edge. Every later stage depends on this edge rate of 31 sc per 8 in (20.3 cm).

Checkpoints (measured flat):

  • After Round 2: the center disk is 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across.
  • After Round 4: the flower is 5.75 in (14.6 cm) from one petal tip to the opposite tip.
  • After Round 6: the motif is about 7 in (17.8 cm) from one fan tip to the opposite tip.
  • After Round 8: the motif is 8 in (20.3 cm) square after blocking.

If the motif is too big, switch to a 4.5 mm hook. If it is too small, switch to a 5.5 mm hook. If only the center is off, change the hook for Rounds 1–2 only.

Flower Motif (Make 20)

Center (Color A)

Round 1: With A, make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 15 dc in the ring. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. Pull the ring snug but leave a small hole. (16 dc)

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the same st, then work 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (32 dc)

Fasten off A.

Petals (Color B)

Round 3: Join B with a sc in any st. Ch 5, skip 3 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * 6 more times. Ch 5, skip the last 3 sts and sl st to the first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 loops)*

Round 4: Sl st into the first ch-5 loop. Work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc) in the loop, then move to the next loop; repeat from * around. Don’t work into the sc of Round 3. Sl st to the first sc. (8 petals of 11 sts each, 88 sts)*

The middle tr of each petal is its tip. The tall stitches give each petal its oval shape and vertical ridges. Fasten off B.

Lace Frame (Color A)

Pick any petal and call it a corner petal. Going around, the petals alternate between corner petals and side petals. Place a marker in the tip of each of the 4 corner petals.

Round 5: Join A with a sc in a marked corner tip. Ch 7, sc in the tip of the next petal; repeat from * 6 more times. Ch 7 and sl st to the first sc. Move each marker up into the sc above it. (8 sc, 8 ch-7 loops)*

Round 6: Ch 4 (counts as tr). Work 3 tr in the same sc, ch 3, then 4 tr in the same sc (this is the first corner fan). *Ch 4, sc in the next ch-7 loop, ch 4, sc in the next sc (side petal tip), ch 4, sc in the next ch-7 loop, ch 4, then work a corner fan in the next marked sc; repeat from * 2 more times. Work the last side the same way (ch 4, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 4) and sl st to the top of the beginning ch-4. Fasten off.

Count: 4 fans (32 tr, 4 ch-3 sps). Each side has 3 sc and 4 ch-4 sps between the fans.

Each fan starts at a single point on a diagonal petal tip and spreads toward a corner, forming the triangular wedges.

Round 7: Join A in any corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. *Dc in each of the next 4 tr. Ch 5, skip the next ch-4 sp and sc in the following ch-4 sp. Ch 5, sc in the next ch-4 sp. Ch 5, skip the next ch-4 sp. Dc in each of the next 4 tr, then work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner ch-3 sp. Repeat from * around, leaving out the last corner group. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3.

Count: 48 dc, 8 sc, 12 ch-5 sps, 4 ch-2 corner sps.

The ch-5 loops cross over the ch-4 loops of Round 6 and form the open diamonds.

Round 8: Ch 1. Sc in the same st and in the next dc, then work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner ch-2 sp. *Sc in each of the next 2 dc and the next 4 dc. Work 5 sc in the ch-5 sp, sc in the next sc, 5 sc in the next ch-5 sp, sc in the next sc, and 5 sc in the next ch-5 sp. Sc in each of the next 4 dc and the next 2 dc, then work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner sp. Repeat from * 2 more times. For the last side, sc in each st up to the first 2 sc of the round and sl st to the first sc.

Each side has 2 + 4 + 5 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 5 + 4 + 2 = 29 sc between the corner spaces. Adding that side’s 2 corner sc gives 31 sc per side.

Round 8 total: 124 sc (4 x 31) and 4 ch-2 sps. Fasten off, weave in the ends, and block to 8 in (20.3 cm).

Make All Pieces

Make 20 identical motifs. Use Color A for Rounds 1–2 and 5–8, and Color B for Rounds 3–4. Each motif uses about 15 g of A and 8 g of B. Joining and borders use about 40 g of A in total.

Work in batches: all centers first, then all petals, then all frames. This keeps your tension even. Lightly block each motif to 8 in (20.3 cm) before joining.

Layout (four separate strips):

Strip 1 Strip 2 Strip 3 Strip 4
[ M ] [ M ] [ M ] [ M ]
[ M ] [ M ] [ M ] [ M ]
[ M ] [ M ] [ M ] [ M ]
[ M ] [ M ] [ M ] [ M ]
[ M ] [ M ] [ M ] [ M ]

M = one motif. The strips are not joined to each other. They hang side by side with gaps between them.

Joining

Join the motifs with Color A using a slip-stitch seam through the back loops.

  1. Hold two motifs RS together with the edges lined up.
  2. Sl st through both corner ch-2 sps.
  3. Sl st through the BLO of each matching pair of sc, one to one: 31 sts on one motif to 31 sts on the other.
  4. Sl st through the next pair of corner ch-2 sps and fasten off.

Both edges have exactly 31 sc, so every stitch has a partner and nothing is eased in. Make 4 seams per strip.

Tension: keep each sl st as loose as the sc beneath it. If the seam puckers, go up one hook size for joining. A tight seam shortens the strip and pulls the fans out of line.

Size checkpoint: each joined strip should measure 8 in x 40 in (20.3 cm x 101.6 cm), which is 5 x 8 in (20.3 cm).

Border

Border gauge: the border keeps the motif edge rate of 31 sc per 8 in (20.3 cm), or about 3.9 sc per inch. Each sc round adds about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of depth.

At each seam, go straight from the last sc of one motif to the first sc of the next. Don’t work into the joined ch-2 sps; they are folded into the seam.

Border Round 1: Join A in the top-right outer corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1 and work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the same sp. Sc in each sc along the edge, and work (sc, ch 2, sc) in each outer corner sp. Sl st to the first sc.

  • Long side: 155 sc (5 motifs x 31) + 2 corner sc = 157 sc
  • Short side: 31 sc (1 x 31) + 2 corner sc = 33 sc
  • Total: (2 x 157) + (2 x 33) = 380 sc, plus 4 ch-2 sps

Border Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner sp. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off.

  • Long side: 159 sc
  • Short side: 35 sc
  • Total: (2 x 159) + (2 x 35) = 388 sc, plus 4 ch-2 sps

Why the math works: the starting counts come straight from the motif edges, so the border neither stretches nor gathers the strip. Each round adds only 2 stitches per side, one at each corner. At 3.9 sc per inch, 2 stitches cover about 0.5 in (1.3 cm). That matches the 0.25 in (0.6 cm) the round adds at each end. After two rounds, 8 in x 40 in (20.3 cm x 101.6 cm) becomes 9 in x 41 in (22.9 cm x 104.1 cm). As a check, 159 ÷ 41 and 35 ÷ 9 both come to about 3.9 sc per inch.

Work the border on all 4 strips.

Final Blocking

  1. Soak each strip in cool water, then gently squeeze out the water without wringing.
  2. Roll the strip in a towel and press out more water.
  3. Lay it flat and pin a 9 in x 41 in (22.9 cm x 104.1 cm) rectangle, starting with the corners.
  4. Pin the seam lines straight so the motifs sit at 8 in (20.3 cm) intervals.
  5. Pin each fan tip, and shape each petal into a smooth oval.
  6. Mist the mesh and open the diamonds with your fingers.
  7. Let the strip dry fully, at least 24 hours, before unpinning.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • 20 motifs, each with 8 petals, 4 corner fans and 31 sc per side
  • Center holes small and even
  • Seams flat, with 31 sts matched to 31 sts
  • Border Round 2: 159 sc per long side, 35 sc per short side
  • Each strip measures 9 in x 41 in (22.9 cm x 104.1 cm)
  • All 4 strips within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of the same length
  • Ends woven in securely, especially at the seams
  • 3 ring clips spaced evenly along each top edge

Troubleshooting

Petals cup or ruffle: change the Round 3 loops to ch 4 or ch 6, and keep 11 sts per petal.

Fans curl forward: your tr are too tight. Go up one hook size for Round 6 and block the fans flat.

Sides bow inward: the Round 7 ch-5 loops are too tight. Work them more loosely.

Round 8 count is wrong: check that you skipped the first and last ch-4 sps in Round 7. Each side needs exactly 3 ch-5 sps.

Strip is shorter than 40 in (101.6 cm): the seams are too tight. Rejoin them with a larger hook.

Border waves: you added stitches at the seams. Recount to 155 sc per long side, not counting the corner sc.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, then reshape and dry flat. If the strips relax over time, pin them out again as in Final Blocking.

Final Notes

Each stage builds on the one before it. The 2.75 in (7.0 cm) center grows into a 5.75 in (14.6 cm) flower. The frame brings the motif to 8 in (20.3 cm) with 31 sc per side. Five motifs make 8 in x 40 in (20.3 cm x 101.6 cm), and the border finishes each strip at 9 in x 41 in (22.9 cm x 104.1 cm). Check each stage as you go, and all four strips will hang straight and even.

Happy crocheting!
