The Peach Weave Hanging Basket is a small, sturdy catch-all that hangs from a rail, rod, or hook. A deep basketweave texture covers the walls and looks woven rather than crocheted. A smooth top band and two upright hanging straps finish it. It is ideal for clothespins in a laundry room, and it works just as well for hair ties, cables, or small toys.
The basket uses one soft peach shade from start to finish, so the texture carries the design. Raised vertical blocks alternate with recessed horizontal blocks in a clean checkerboard. The style is calm, modern, and practical.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished basket measures about 8 in (20.3 cm) wide when laid flat, 3 in (7.6 cm) deep at the base, and 8.7 in (22.1 cm) tall to the rim. With the straps standing up, the total hanging height is about 10.7 in (27.2 cm).
You start with an oval base in single crochet, then turn the edge up with a round of double crochet. Next come 18 rounds of front and back post double crochet, which form the basketweave. A five-round single crochet band and a slip stitch round finish the rim. You crochet two short strips separately and sew them on as hanging loops.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 8 in (20.3 cm) wide when flat x 8.7 in (22.1 cm) tall
- Base: about 6.5 in x 3 in (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm)
- Hanging height with straps: about 10.7 in (27.2 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate (post stitches worked in the round)
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 1 basket body + 2 sewn-on straps, finished as one item
- Layout: Single basket, worked in joined rounds without turning
- Body circumference: 64 stitches = 16 in (40.6 cm)
- Size before rim band: 7.6 in (19.3 cm) tall after Round 25
- Rim band depth: about 1.1 in (2.8 cm)
Materials
Choose a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton gives crisp stitch definition and holds the basket’s shape. Acrylic will work, but the basket comes out softer and slumps more. Avoid fuzzy or highly textured yarns, because they blur the weave.
- Peach (main color): about 200 g / 340 m (the basket uses roughly 160 g / 272 m)
These amounts include a margin of about 25 percent. Post stitches use far more yarn than plain double crochet, so keep the full margin.
Tools:
- 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- 4 stitch markers
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- 2 metal S-hooks for hanging
- Optional: an oval of plastic canvas about 6 in x 2.5 in (15.2 cm x 6.4 cm) to stiffen the base
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- FPdc – front post double crochet
- BPdc – back post double crochet
Special stitches:
- FPdc: Yarn over and insert the hook from front to back to front around the post of the stitch below. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then [yarn over, pull through 2 loops] twice. This stitch sits forward on the outside of the basket.
- BPdc: Yarn over and insert the hook from back to front to back around the post of the stitch below. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then [yarn over, pull through 2 loops] twice. This stitch sits back and leaves a horizontal bar on the outside.
Round notes: Join each round with a sl st to the first stitch. The ch 1 or ch 2 at the start of a round does not count as a stitch. Do not turn. Mark the first stitch of each round and move the marker up as you go.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- Single crochet: 16 sts and 18 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- Basketweave: 16 sts and 10 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
Measure the basket as you go. The base is your first swatch, and the first two basketweave blocks are your second. Check the size at each checkpoint and adjust before you continue.
- After Round 6 (base): about 6.5 in x 3 in (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm), 64 sts
- After Round 7: base edge turned up, with about 0.4 in (1.0 cm) of wall
- After Round 13: wall about 2.8 in (7.1 cm) tall; 8 in (20.3 cm) wide when flat
- After Round 25: wall about 7.6 in (19.3 cm) tall
- After Round 31: total height about 8.7 in (22.1 cm)
If the basket is too big: Go down 0.5 mm in hook size and start again. If it is too small: Go up 0.5 mm. Do not change the stitch count. The basketweave needs a multiple of 8 stitches, and the base increases are set up to land exactly on 64. A difference of up to 0.25 in (0.6 cm) in width is fine.

Base
The base is an oval worked around a foundation chain. Each end grows by 3 sts per round, so every round adds 6 sts. The two long sides always have 14 sts each.
Foundation: Ch 17.
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 14 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the opposite side of the chain, sc in next 14 ch, 2 sc in the last ch (the same ch as the first sc). Join. (34 sts: 14 per long side, 3 per end)
Round 2: Ch 1, inc in first st, sc in next 14 sts, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 14 sts, inc in each of last 2 sts. Join. (40 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in next st, inc] once, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next st, inc] 3 times, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next st, inc] 2 times. Join. (46 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 sts, inc] once, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, inc] 3 times, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, inc] 2 times. Join. (52 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, [sc in next 3 sts, inc] once, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next 3 sts, inc] 3 times, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next 3 sts, inc] 2 times. Join. (58 sts)
Round 6: Ch 1, [sc in next 4 sts, inc] once, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next 4 sts, inc] 3 times, sc in next 14 sts, [sc in next 4 sts, inc] 2 times. Join. (64 sts: 14 per long side, 18 per end)
Checkpoint: The base should lie flat and measure about 6.5 in x 3 in (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm). If it cups, your sc is too tight. If it ruffles, your sc is too loose.
Walls
Round 7 (turning round): Ch 2, working in BLO, dc in each st around. Join. (64 sts)
Working in the back loop leaves a ridge on the outside that makes a crisp bottom edge.
The basketweave uses blocks that are 4 stitches wide and 3 rounds tall. The pattern repeats 8 times around, so each round has 32 FPdc and 32 BPdc.
Rounds 8–10 (Block A): Ch 2, [FPdc around each of next 4 sts, BPdc around each of next 4 sts] 8 times. Join. (64 sts per round)
Rounds 11–13 (Block B): Ch 2, [BPdc around each of next 4 sts, FPdc around each of next 4 sts] 8 times. Join. (64 sts per round)
Within each block, every FPdc goes around an FPdc and every BPdc goes around a BPdc, so the blocks stack straight. At the start of each new block, the order switches and the checkerboard shifts.
Checkpoint after Round 13: Wall about 2.8 in (7.1 cm) tall, 8 in (20.3 cm) wide when flat, 64 sts.
Rounds 14–16: Work as Block A. (64 sts per round)
Rounds 17–19: Work as Block B. (64 sts per round)
Rounds 20–22: Work as Block A. (64 sts per round)
Rounds 23–25: Work as Block B. (64 sts per round)
You now have 6 tiers of blocks, each about 1.2 in (3.0 cm) tall, that alternate between raised vertical columns and recessed horizontal bars.
Checkpoint after Round 25: Wall about 7.6 in (19.3 cm) tall, 64 sts.
Rim Band (Border)
Border gauge: 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm). This is the same stitch gauge as the basketweave, so the rim keeps exactly 64 sts with no increases or decreases.
Round 26 (conversion round): Ch 1, sc in top of each st around. Join. (64 + 0 = 64 sts: 32 on the front and 32 on the back when flat)
Rounds 27–30: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (64 sts per round: 32 front, 32 back)
Round 31 (finishing round): Sl st loosely in each st around. Join. (64 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the end.
Why the math works: The walls have 64 sts, which is 16 in (40.6 cm) at 4 sts per inch. Half of that is 32 sts, or 8 in (20.3 cm) when the basket lies flat. The sc band has the same 4 sts per inch, so 64 sc fit the same circumference. Five sc rounds at 18 rounds per 4 in (10.2 cm) add about 1.1 in (2.8 cm) of band, for a total height of 8.7 in (22.1 cm). The slip stitch round firms the edge but adds almost no height.
Straps (Make 2)
Foundation: Ch 5.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (4 sts)
Rows 2–27: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (4 sts per row)
Fasten off and leave a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail for sewing. Each strap is 1 in x 6 in (2.5 cm x 15.2 cm). Count the rows so both straps match exactly.
Attaching: Lay the basket flat with the beginning of the round at one fold. The side that will face the wall is the back panel of 32 sts. Counting from one fold, mark back-panel sts 5–8 and 25–28. These 4-stitch spaces match the width of a strap. The strap centers are 20 sts apart, which is 5 in (12.7 cm).
For each strap, put 1 in (2.5 cm) of one end inside the rim and 1 in (2.5 cm) of the other end outside it, so the strap wraps around the band. Whipstitch around both overlaps, sewing through the band. The remaining 4 in (10.2 cm) forms a loop that stands about 2 in (5.1 cm) above the rim.
Final Blocking
- Mist the basket lightly with water until it is damp, not soaked.
- Stuff it firmly with a folded towel to shape the oval.
- Press the base flat and straighten the bottom ridge with your fingers.
- Measure it: 8 in (20.3 cm) wide when flat and 8.7 in (22.1 cm) tall.
- Smooth the post-stitch blocks so the columns stand straight.
- Pinch the straps upright and let them dry standing up.
- Let the basket dry completely, about 24 hours, before removing the towel.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- The base measures about 6.5 in x 3 in (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm) and lies flat.
- The bottom ridge from Round 7 runs evenly all the way around.
- Every basketweave round has 64 sts in 8 repeats.
- Six tiers of blocks alternate cleanly, with no slanted columns.
- The rim band has 64 sts and does not flare or pull in.
- Both straps have 27 rows and stand about 2 in (5.1 cm) above the rim.
- The straps are 5 in (12.7 cm) apart, center to center.
- All ends are woven in securely on the inside.
Troubleshooting
The blocks drift diagonally around the basket. Work the first post stitch of each round around the first stitch of the previous round, not around the joining sl st.
The stitch count drops below 64. You probably skipped the stitch hidden under the join. Count 8 repeats in every round.
The walls flare at the top. Your post stitches are loose. Tighten your tension or use a 4.5 mm hook for the walls.
The rim pulls inward. Your sc is tighter than your post stitches. Work the band with a 5.5 mm hook.
The base cups like a bowl. Your increases are too tight. Go up one hook size for the base only.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, then reshape the basket and lay it flat to dry. Avoid the dryer, which can shrink cotton and distort the weave.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. The base grows to 64 sts and measures about 6.5 in x 3 in (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm). Those 64 sts give 16 in (40.6 cm) of circumference, or 8 in (20.3 cm) when the basket is flat. Six basketweave tiers bring the wall to 7.6 in (19.3 cm), and the rim band brings the basket to 8.7 in (22.1 cm). Two 6 in (15.2 cm) straps form the hanging loops. Check the size at each stage, and the finished basket will hang straight and keep its shape.
Happy crocheting!
