Rose Lattice Strip Curtain Crochet Pattern

This curtain is made of four separate hanging strips. Each strip is a single column of seven square motifs. Every motif has a raised pink twelve-petal flower with a cream center, set inside an openwork cream diamond. Radiating cream fans fill the corners, so wherever two motifs meet, the fans pair up into a butterfly shape at each side edge.

The palette is just two colors, warm cream and rose pink. In a sunny window, light comes through the open lattice and the flowers seem to float. The style sits between vintage filet lace and a modern boho panel.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. Each finished strip measures 7.5 in x 46.5 in (19.1 cm x 118.1 cm). Hung side by side, the four strips cover about 30 in (76.2 cm) of rod, plus any gaps you leave between them.

Construction is simple. You work 28 identical motifs in the round and join seven into each strip with a flat slip-stitch seam. Then you add a two-round border to each strip. Clip rings hold the strips on the rod.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished strip size: 7.5 in x 46.5 in (19.1 cm x 118.1 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: DK (3) cotton
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
  • Number of pieces: 28 motifs, joined into 4 strips of 7
  • Layout: 4 separate strips, each 1 motif wide x 7 motifs tall
  • Motif size: 6.5 in (16.5 cm) square
  • Strip size before border: 6.5 in x 45.5 in (16.5 cm x 115.6 cm)
  • Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) on every edge

Materials

Choose a smooth mercerized or combed DK cotton. Cotton holds the petal shape, blocks crisply, and stretches little when the strips hang. Avoid fuzzy or very elastic yarns, because a long hanging strip will grow.

  • Color A, Cream: 350 g, about 805 m (880 yd), based on 50 g / 115 m balls
  • Color B, Rose Pink: 100 g, about 230 m (252 yd)

These quantities include a margin of about 15 percent for your gauge swatch, yarn tails, and the test motif.

Tools:

  • 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Blocking mats, rust-proof pins, and a spray bottle
  • Tape measure
  • 12 curtain clip rings (3 per strip) and a curtain rod

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • sp(s): space(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • MR: magic ring
  • BL: back loop
  • RS: right side
  • rep: repeat

Special stitches:

  • Petal: (dc, 2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr, dc) all in the same stitch. The ch-2 forms the pointed tip.
  • Fan: (tr, ch 1) 6 times, then tr, all in the same space. This makes 7 tr and 6 ch-1 sps that radiate outward.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) with a 3.5 mm hook.

Make and block one full test motif before you start the rest. The whole project depends on this one piece measuring 6.5 in (16.5 cm) square.

Checkpoints (lightly flattened, before blocking):

  • After Round 1: about 1 in (2.5 cm) across
  • After Round 2: about 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across
  • After Round 3: about 3.75 in (9.5 cm) from one petal tip to the opposite tip
  • After Round 4: about 4.25 in (10.8 cm) across
  • After Round 5: about 5 in (12.7 cm) from one diamond point to the opposite point
  • After Round 6: about 6 in (15.2 cm) from side to side
  • After Round 7: 6.5 in (16.5 cm) square after blocking

If the motif is too big: go down to a 3.25 mm hook and make it again.

If the motif is too small: go up to a 3.75 mm hook.

Keep your chain lengths even. Tight ch-4 and ch-5 loops are the most common reason a motif cups instead of lying flat.

Motif (Make 28)

Round 1 (Cream)

With Color A, make a MR. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 11 dc in the ring. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 and pull the ring closed. (12 dc)

Round 2 (Cream)

Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, then 2 dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (24 dc) Fasten off.

Round 3 (Pink Petals)

Join Color B with sl st in any st. *Petal in next st, sl st in next st; rep from * 11 more times. Work the final sl st into the joining sl st. Fasten off.

Count: 12 Petals and 12 sl sts. Each petal sits on one stitch, with a sl st between it and the next. This makes the petals stand up as separate pointed leaves that touch at their bases.

Round 4 (Cream)

Join Color A with sl st in any ch-2 petal tip. Ch 1, sc in same tip, ch 5, sc in next ch-2 tip, ch 5; rep from * 10 more times. Join with sl st to first sc. (12 sc, 12 ch-5 sps)*

Round 5 (Cream, Diamond Frame)

Sl st into the next ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same sp. This is the first diamond point.

[Ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp] 2 times, ch 3*, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-5 sp; rep from * 2 more times, then rep from * to ** once. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.

Count: 24 dc, 8 sc, 4 point ch-3 sps, 12 side ch-3 sps.

The four dc groups are the top, right, bottom, and left points of the diamond. Each diamond side now has exactly 3 ch-3 sps. Going clockwise from one point to the next, call them A, B, and C.

Round 6 (Cream, Fans)

Sl st in next 2 dc and into the point ch-3 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in same sp.

Ch 4, sc in next ch-3 sp (A), ch 4, Fan in next ch-3 sp (B), ch 4, sc in next ch-3 sp (C), ch 4*, 3 sc in next point ch-3 sp; rep from * 2 more times, then rep from * to ** once. Join with sl st to first sc.

Count: 20 sc, 4 Fans (28 tr, 24 ch-1 sps), 16 ch-4 sps.

Each Fan sits in the middle space of a diamond side, which is where the square’s corner will be. So the fans fill the corner triangles outside the diamond. The short sc groups keep the diamond points level with the straight sides of the square.

Round 7 (Cream, Squaring Round)

Ch 1, sc in same st as join and in next 2 sc.

3 sc in next ch-4 sp, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next ch-4 sp, [sc in next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp] 3 times, 3 sc in next tr (the 4th tr of the Fan; this is the corner), [sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next tr] 3 times, 3 sc in next ch-4 sp, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next ch-4 sp*, sc in each of next 3 sc; rep from * 2 more times, then rep from * to ** once. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.

Count: 128 sc (32 sc per repeat x 4 repeats).

Per side: 33 sc, counted from corner center to corner center and including both corner center stitches. Check: 4 sides x 33 = 132, minus 4 shared corner stitches = 128.

The middle sc of each 3-sc point group is stitch 17 of 33, so every diamond point lands at the exact center of a side.

Weave in the ends. Wet block the motif to 6.5 in (16.5 cm) square, pinning the petals flat and opening the fans evenly.

Make All Pieces

Make 28 motifs in total.

  • Per motif: about 9 g Color A (Rounds 1–2 and 4–7) and 3 g Color B (Round 3)
  • All 28 motifs: about 252 g Color A and 84 g Color B
  • Joining and borders: about 50 g Color A for all four strips

Block every motif to the same 6.5 in (16.5 cm) square before joining. Keep them in stacks of seven, one stack per strip.

Layout (M = motif, | = separate strips, not joined):

Strip 1 | Strip 2 | Strip 3 | Strip 4
   M | M | M | M
   M | M | M | M
   M | M | M | M
   M | M | M | M
   M | M | M | M
   M | M | M | M
   M | M | M | M

Within each strip, the seven motifs join top to bottom. The four strips are never joined to each other.

Joining

Method: a flat slip-stitch seam through the back loops, worked in Color A with the RS facing up.

Lay two motifs side by side, RS up, with the edges to be joined touching. Turn every motif the same way so the Round 7 starting point is in the same place on each.

Insert the hook through the BL of the corner center sc on the first motif, then through the BL of the matching corner center sc on the second motif. Join the yarn and sl st.

Continue with 1 sl st through each matching pair of back loops. Work 33 sl sts per seam, from corner center to corner center. The stitches match one to one because every motif side has the same 33 stitches. The 17th sl st joins the two diamond points, so the diamonds meet tip to tip and the corner fans meet in a butterfly shape.

Tension: keep your slip stitches as loose as the sc they join. A tight seam makes the strip pucker and come out short. If needed, go up one hook size for joining.

Each strip has 6 seams, so the whole curtain has 24.

Size checkpoint: two joined motifs should measure 6.5 in x 13 in (16.5 cm x 33.0 cm). A finished strip of seven should measure 6.5 in x 45.5 in (16.5 cm x 115.6 cm).

Border (Work on Each Strip)

Border gauge: work the border at the same gauge as the motifs, about 5 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm). This matches the motif edges, which have 33 sts over 6.5 in (16.5 cm).

Starting counts per strip:

  • Long sides: 7 motifs x 33 sts = 231 sts
  • Short sides: 1 motif x 33 sts = 33 sts

These counts include each motif’s own corner stitches. At each seam, the two corner stitches that sit side by side are worked separately. Nothing extra is added at the seams.

Border Round 1 (Cream)

With RS facing, join Color A in the corner center st at the top right. Ch 1, 3 sc in same st. Work 1 sc in each st along every side, including 1 sc into each motif corner stitch at the seams. Work 3 sc in each of the other 3 outer corner sts. Join with sl st to first sc.

  • Long sides: 231 worked 1 per st + 2 added at the corners = 233 sts per side
  • Short sides: 33 worked 1 per st + 2 added at the corners = 35 sts per side
  • Total: 2 x 233 + 2 x 35 – 4 shared corners = 532 sc

Border Round 2 (Cream, Lattice Edge)

Sl st into the next sc, which is the corner center. Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the corner st. *[Ch 3, sk 1 st, sc in next st] until you reach the next corner center, so the last sc of the side goes into that corner. Then ch 3 and sc again in the same corner st. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off.

  • Long sides: 232 gaps between corner centers ÷ 2 = 116 ch-3 loops
  • Short sides: 34 gaps ÷ 2 = 17 ch-3 loops
  • Corners: 1 ch-3 loop each
  • Total: 2 x 116 + 2 x 17 + 4 = 270 ch-3 loops and 270 sc

Why the math works: after Round 1, each side has an odd number of stitches, counting both corners (233 and 35). That leaves an even number of gaps between them (232 and 34). Each sk-1 repeat covers 2 stitches, so every side ends exactly on a corner with no adjustments.

The border adds 0.5 in (1.3 cm) to every edge, giving a finished strip of 7.5 in x 46.5 in (19.1 cm x 118.1 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends along the seams, never across the open lattice.
  2. Soak one strip in cool water for 10 minutes. Press the water out in a towel; do not wring.
  3. Lay the strip flat on mats. Pin the long edges straight first, 7.5 in (19.1 cm) apart.
  4. Pin the length to 46.5 in (118.1 cm), then check that every motif is 6.5 in (16.5 cm) tall.
  5. Pin out each ch-3 border loop and spread the corner fans evenly.
  6. Lift the petals slightly with your fingertips so they keep their shape.
  7. Let the strip dry completely before unpinning. Repeat for all four strips.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • [ ] The corner fans form a butterfly at both side edges of every seam
  • [ ] Each seam has 33 sl sts and lies flat
  • [ ] Border Round 1 has 233 sts on each long side and 35 on each short side
  • [ ] Border Round 2 has 116 loops on each long side and 17 on each short side
  • [ ] Each strip measures 7.5 in x 46.5 in (19.1 cm x 118.1 cm)
  • [ ] All four strips are within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of each other in length
  • [ ] All ends are woven in securely

Troubleshooting

Petals curl or ruffle: your Round 3 tension is looser than Round 2. Use a 3.25 mm hook for the pink round only.

The motif cups: the chains in Rounds 4–6 are too tight. Loosen your chains, or add 1 ch to each ch-4 loop in Round 6 only.

Corners are rounded instead of square: check that each Fan has all 7 tr, then pin the corners firmly when blocking.

Round 7 count is off: count each side of Round 7 between the 3-sc corner groups. There should be 29 sts.

A strip stretches when hung: block it flat again and let it dry lying down.

Strips are different lengths: measure every motif before joining and remake any that are off.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then dry flat and re-pin if needed. Never hang the strips while they are wet.

Final Notes

The measurements build directly on each other. A gauge of 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 6.5 in (16.5 cm) motif with 33 sts per side. Seven motifs make a 6.5 in x 45.5 in (16.5 cm x 115.6 cm) strip with 231 sts on each long side and 33 on each short side. Two border rounds bring each strip to 7.5 in x 46.5 in (19.1 cm x 118.1 cm). Hang the four strips together for a light, flower-filled curtain.

Happy crocheting!
