The Sage Cascade holder stacks three lacy cone baskets on one continuous strap and hangs from a wooden ring. Each basket holds one standard roll. The roll sits a little above the base and its top shows over the rim, so it is easy to grab.
The whole piece is one soft sage green. Solid single crochet bands at the bottom and top keep the edges firm. Staggered shell rounds in the middle let light through and keep the look airy.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket is 4 in (10.2 cm) across the base, 5.4 in (13.7 cm) across the top and 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall. Measured along the strap, the hanging length from the ring to the bottom basket is about 21.9 in (55.6 cm).
Here is the construction. You crochet each basket in joined rounds: a flat base, a back-loop turning round, shell rounds that flare the wall, then a solid rim. You crochet one long strap in rows, fold it over the ring, and sew it down both sides of the three baskets.
Finished Size and Construction
- Basket size: 4 in (10.2 cm) base, 5.4 in (13.7 cm) top, 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall
- Hanging length: about 21.9 in (55.6 cm) from the ring fold to the bottom basket
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 4 (3 baskets + 1 strap)
- Layout: 1 column of 3 baskets, 2.1 in (5.3 cm) gaps
- Basket height before border: 3 in (7.6 cm)
- Border (rim) depth: 0.75 in (1.9 cm), 3 rounds
Materials
Yarn: Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds the cone shape, doesn’t fuzz and copes with bathroom humidity. Acrylic works too, but it will slouch more under the weight of a roll.
- Sage green: 130 g, about 250 m
Each basket uses about 30 g and the strap about 15 g. The total above includes a margin of roughly 25 g for your gauge swatch and tails.
Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– 4 stitch markers
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Wooden ring, 2 in (5.1 cm) inside diameter
– Wall hook
– Spray bottle and pins for blocking
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- MR – magic ring
- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rnd – round
Shell: 5 dc worked into the same stitch. The 3rd dc of the shell is its center dc.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 15 sc and 16 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc.
Make one full basket before starting the others. It is your real gauge test, and the other two baskets must match it.
Checkpoints:
– After Rnd 4 (24 sts): the flat circle is 2 in (5.1 cm) across.
– After Rnd 8 (48 sts): the base is 4 in (10.2 cm) across.
– After Rnd 15: the wall is 3 in (7.6 cm) tall, measured from the turning ridge.
– After Rnd 18: the top opening is 5.4 in (13.7 cm) across and the wall is 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall.
If your piece is too big: go down one hook size (4.5 mm). If it is too small: go up one size (5.5 mm). Change hooks rather than stitch counts. The shell repeat depends on exactly 48 stitches at Rnd 10.

Basket (Make 3)
Base
Rnd 1: MR, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st 6 times, join. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st 6 times, join. (24 sts)
Checkpoint: 2 in (5.1 cm) across.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st 6 times, join. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st 6 times, join. (36 sts)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st 6 times, join. (42 sts)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st 6 times, join. (48 sts)
Checkpoint: the base lies flat and measures 4 in (10.2 cm) across.
Lower Wall
Rnd 9 (turning round): Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, join. This is a conversion round: 48 sts worked 1-per-existing-st + 0 added = 48 sts. The unused front loops form a ridge, and the work starts to turn upward.
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (48 sts)
These two rounds make the solid band above the base, 0.5 in (1.3 cm) tall.
Lace Section
Rnd 11 (first shells): Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts 7 times. Join with sl st to first sc.
That makes 8 repeats of 6 sts. Count: 8 sc + 40 dc = 48 sts.
Rnd 12 (offset shells, growth round): Sl st in next 3 dc so you are in the center dc of the first shell. Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, shell in next sc, ch 1, sc in center dc of next shell 7 times, ch 1, shell in last sc, ch 1, join to first sc.
Each repeat is 1 sc + 1 ch + 5 dc + 1 ch = 8 sts. Round total: 8 sc + 40 dc + 16 ch = 64 sts. The ch-1 spaces flare the cone and open the small triangles between shells.
Rnds 13–15: Sl st in next ch-1 sp and next 3 dc so you are in the center dc of the first shell. Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, shell in next sc, ch 1, sc in center dc of next shell 7 times, ch 1, shell in last sc, ch 1, join to first sc.
Each of these rounds is 64 sts on its own (8 sc + 40 dc + 16 ch). In every round, the shells sit on the previous round’s sc and the sc sit on the previous round’s center dc, so the fans stagger like a honeycomb.
Checkpoint: the wall is 3 in (7.6 cm) tall from the turning ridge, and the opening is close to 5.4 in (13.7 cm) across.
Go straight on to the Border (Rnds 16–18) below for each basket, then fasten off and weave in the ends.
Strap (Make 1)
The strap is worked lengthwise. Its 165 sts are the full length, and 3 rows make the width.
Foundation: Ch 166.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (165 sts)
Rows 2–3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (165 sts)
Fasten off and leave a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail for sewing.
Strap checkpoint: 44 in (111.8 cm) long and 0.75 in (1.9 cm) wide, measured flat and unstretched.
Mark the strap along Row 3 (st 1 is the bottom end of the left side):
| Section | Left side sts | Right side sts | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom basket | 1–14 | 152–165 | 3.75 in (9.5 cm) |
| Gap | 15–22 | 144–151 | 2.1 in (5.3 cm) |
| Middle basket | 23–36 | 130–143 | 3.75 in (9.5 cm) |
| Gap | 37–44 | 122–129 | 2.1 in (5.3 cm) |
| Top basket | 45–58 | 108–121 | 3.75 in (9.5 cm) |
| Rise to ring | 59–82 | 84–107 | 6.4 in (16.3 cm) |
| Ring fold | 83 | 83 | — |
Each side has 82 sts and st 83 is the fold: 82 + 1 + 82 = 165.
Make All Pieces
- Baskets: 3 in sage green, each worked through Rnd 18 (border included)
- Strap: 1 in sage green, 165 sts × 3 rows
Layout (front view):
( ring )
/ \
/ \ rise: 24 sts each side
[ TOP BASKET ] strap sts 45–58 / 108–121
| | gap: 8 sts
[ MIDDLE BASKET ] strap sts 23–36 / 130–143
| | gap: 8 sts
[ BOTTOM BASKET ] strap sts 1–14 / 152–165
Joining
Method: Whipstitch with the yarn tail, working through both loops of the strap’s edge stitches and through the outer wall of the basket.
Marking the baskets: On each basket, put a marker in rim st 1 and rim st 33 (Rnd 18). These two points are exactly opposite each other, and the strap runs straight down from each one to the turning ridge.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Each 14-st basket section of the strap covers the basket’s 10 wall rounds, which are 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall:
– 1 strap st per sc round, for 5 sc rounds (Rnds 9, 10, 16, 17, 18) = 5 strap sts
– 9 strap sts spread across the 5 shell rounds, which is about 2 per round with one round taking only 1
– Total: 5 + 9 = 14 strap sts
Steps:
1. Fold the strap over the ring at st 83. Whipstitch sts 79–82 to sts 84–87, side edge to side edge, to close a 1.1 in (2.8 cm) loop under the ring.
2. Pin strap sts 45–58 down the top basket at marker st 1, with st 58 at the rim and st 45 at the turning ridge. Pin sts 108–121 the same way at marker st 33.
3. Repeat for the middle basket (sts 23–36 and 130–143) and the bottom basket (sts 1–14 and 152–165).
4. Whipstitch both long edges of each pinned section to the wall. Add 2 extra stitches through the top rim round and 2 through the turning ridge to anchor them.
5. Leave the gap sections (15–22, 37–44 and the matching sts on the right) unsewn.
Tension: Sew snugly, but don’t pull so hard that the strap shortens or puckers. The strap should lie flat against the cone without rippling.
Size checkpoint: Hang the piece empty. The gaps should be 2.1 in (5.3 cm), and the length from ring fold to bottom basket should be about 21.9 in (55.6 cm) measured along the strap.
Border (Top Rim)
Work these rounds on each basket straight after Rnd 15.
Border gauge: the same 15 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm). The rim’s 64 sts measure about 17.1 in (43.4 cm) around, which gives the 5.4 in (13.7 cm) opening.
Think of the round as two halves of 32 sts, front and back, split at the two points where the strap attaches.
Rnd 16 (conversion round): Ch 1, sc in first sc. Then work sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each of 5 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next sc 7 times, and sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each of 5 dc, sc in ch-1 sp to finish. Join.
This is 64 sts worked 1-per-existing-st (8 sc + 40 dc + 16 ch-sp) + 0 added = 64 sts. That gives 32 sts per half (4 repeats × 8).
Rnd 17: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (64 sts: 32 front + 32 back)
Rnd 18: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (64 sts: 32 front + 32 back) Fasten off.
Why the math works: Every lace round from Rnd 12 to Rnd 15 has 8 repeats of 8 sts, so the rim converts it 1-for-1 without adding or skipping anything. This keeps the rim flat and sitting at the same flare as the lace. Because 64 divides into two halves of 4 repeats each, rim st 1 and rim st 33 both sit above an sc column. That means the straps attach on matching points and the basket hangs level.
Final Blocking
- Lightly mist the whole holder with water until damp, not soaked.
- Put a roll (or a container of the same size) in each basket to push out the cone shape.
- Smooth the rims round and line up the shells so the fans run straight up the wall.
- Lay the strap gaps and the rise flat on a towel and pin them straight to their measured lengths. Don’t stretch them.
- Let it dry completely, ideally for 24 hours.
- Hang it and check that the baskets are level and the gaps are even.
Final Quality-Control Checklist

- [ ] All ends are woven in and hidden on the inside of each basket
Troubleshooting
The base cups before Rnd 9. Your tension is tight. Go up a hook size for the base, or relax your hand. The base should be flat until the BLO round.
The cone flares too much or ruffles. Your chains are loose. Make the ch-1s snug, or use a 4.5 mm hook from Rnd 12 on.
The shells don’t stagger. You started a round in the wrong place. Each round has to start in the center dc of a shell, so count the sl sts carefully.
The rim count is off. You probably missed a ch-1 sp. Each repeat needs exactly 8 sc.
The strap stretches under the rolls. Cotton relaxes with weight. Crochet the strap with a 4.5 mm hook, or add a 4th row, which makes it 1 in (2.5 cm) wide.
The baskets tilt. The strap points aren’t opposite each other. Re-mark rim sts 1 and 33 and sew again.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out the water in a towel, and dry flat with the baskets reshaped. Don’t wring or tumble dry.

Final Notes
The measurement chain works like this:
– 48 base sts give a 4 in (10.2 cm) base.
– Shell rounds grow the wall to 64 sts.
– A 64-st rim gives a 5.4 in (13.7 cm) opening on a 3.75 in (9.5 cm) wall.
– Each 14-st strap section covers one basket, 8-st sections make the 2.1 in (5.3 cm) gaps, and a 24-st rise on each side meets at the ring.
– The 165-st strap adds up to a holder about 21.9 in (55.6 cm) long.
